The Story of the Heavy Beat :

Chapter One : Roots : DUB then and now
with DJs FURY8 & DRIVER (Outback Nexus) and special guest JOSEPH SWEENY

To begin, we explore classic and modern currents in Dub, the root form of all electronic Heavy Beats. Beginning with classic reggae dub versions thru dub’s influence on dancehall reggae, to the current sounds of dubstep and digital dub.

Chapter Two : The FUTURE of the Heavy Beat
with WARPER

“Omnidigital DJs and Biomorphic Musicians” Warper will demonstrate the future of Heavy Beats, with all live and original sounds made with anything from 8-bit and circuit bent electronics to original and modified software to hybrid and live instruments. The music that follows is equally innovative and beyond easy classification.
featuring music by:

HEAVYW8BIT CHAMPIONCHIP - Music using Atari2600, Commodore64, Nintendo
ATOM - sonic painting of music, sounds, dialogue, and whatever else
THE MATERIALIZER- Dance Stomp Rock with Live Bass Looping
!INCLUDE - No respect for Audio Signals
ATTN: - Live Electro Freak Out band

Chapter Three : The Heavy BREAK
with DJs:
ODI (Digital Konfusion, Konkrete Jungle, Methods NYC)
CX KIDTRONIK (Krak Attack, Saul Williams band)

Two veteran NYC DJs bring the heavy branches from family tree of the Break, from the founding of hip hop and electro thru 2009.

DJ ODI is one of NYC’s best known and respected jungle and drum and bass DJs. He has many releases, his own clothing line, and has played at D and B events in NYC and all over the world for over a decade. Tonight he’ll be playing a special History of Jungle set, with two turntables and two CDJ decks.

CX KIDTRONIK has been DJing since he was tall enough to reach the decks over 20 years ago. His “Krak Attack” album and its hit single, “Big Girl Skinny Girl” have received worldwide airplay. For the last couple years, CX has largely been on the road as the main beat man for hip hop pioneer Saul Williams, and has recorded in recent years with Kanye West, Alec Empire, and Trent Reznor.

Chapter Four : The Big BOOM

with DJs:
LENNY DEE (Industrial Strength, Third Movement)
MARK VERBOS (Djax-Up-Beats, Drop Bass Network)
JASON BLACKKAT (Spinner Runner Cutter, Summer Campers)

Where it begins is where it ends is where it begins, with the Heaviest of the Beats.

Brooklyn’s legendary LENNY DEE has over 1000 entries on discogs, which includes hundreds of vinyl releases and hundreds more remixes and co-productions. For 20 years Lenny has been DJing and producing tracks, not only the signature hardcore techno sound, but loads of house, electro, disco, breaks, and all sort of styles in between. He has played over 1000 gigs at practically every major electronic music event and festival in the world. Tonight he will give us slices of the newest sounds in underground techno, including many of his own wax productions.

MARK VERBOS is a pioneering DJ and producer, whose roots go back to the fabled Drop Bass events of the early 90’s Midwest. He has over 200 production and co-production credits on vinyl and digital formats, spanning such diverse labels as Astralwerks, Planet Rhythm, and Holland’s seminal acid label Djax-Up-Beats. He currently working regularly with Tommie Sunshine, and he repairs and builds electronic instruments. We expect Mark will bring some classic and new techno and acid, from Detroit and Milwaukee to Berlin and beyond…

JASON BLACKKAT co-founded Blackkat in 1996, and has organized and co organized many outdoor events in NYC and across the US, Canada, Australia, East Timor and Europe. Tonight he will play classic tracks from the pioneering Network23 label, combining elements of acid house, techno, and acid.

and guests artists;

some people have asked about Blackkat's annual Mayday event--
I am not doing Mayday this year---Chrome also is not planning anything as of now, tho he mentioned possibly finding a crew to take it on---as of now I have not heard anything, I will let folks know if something changes...I felt I should say something publicly cuz many have written me about this-----

Chrome and I are both busy in our own endeavours---and both of us are pretty sick of the fkn Tompkins cops and the local yuppies that complain constantly and have made it really difficult---

and speaking only  for myself, Blackkat is done as a party-throwing entity---Blackkat may crop up in music production or the very occasional event, but thats it--after almost 13 years now I have to focus on my own life and not spend all my time, energy, money etc throwing events---Chrome plays frequently at Disorient parties and related outings---

sorry to those that have been true supporters...I truly hope maybe some of you will consider the idea pf throwing your own park event----anyone can get a permit and throw  a party, the city can always use more, and there are a ot of parks that I think can be better than Tompkins---I mean this sincerely! I have always hoped for a growing grassroots movement--

our new hybrid form Septik Nexus will be helping Oblivion and Renegade Virus to return to the Dance Parade this year--I may not attend but I am helping get it together a bit---

Saturday, November 22 10pm - 6am (or later)

at the Refuge loft in Brooklyn (directions below)

$20 donation (to Fay's medical bills and cancer research)

Come all ye FAYTHFUL on Saturday November 22nd! Dearest Fay, one of our community's biggest (and best tattooed) hearts and most generous collaborators, has been undergoing chemotherapy for the last couple months. Her bills are starting to pile up and insurance won't cover them all. So of course, we (that means you!) are teaming up to dance the night away, show her some love and stage our own Economic Recovery Plan, Brooklyn warehouse style.

Half of your $20 donation goes to pay Fay's medical bills and alternative treatments, and the other half goes to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org).

We've recruited a council of advisors from across the spectrum and are pleased to announce Fay's faythful disciples:

* El Gallo Nobody (Data23 / Renegade Virus) releases the ragga jungle

* Dok and Masa (Amoeba DJ Tag Team) deliver the drum and bass

* DJ Courage wobbles out delirious dub step

* $mall ¢hange serves beats from the old, new and future schools

* Zemi17 with Rhiannon (Sub Atomic) pulse out space haus and minimal techno

* Jason Blackkat (Konundrum Records) broadcasts maximal techno

* Amok (Blackkat / Renegade Virus) unleashes the acid core

* VJ Low-Key (Septik Nexus / UndergroundEDM.com) conjures the video visions

* Lola keeps your hunger in check with culinary delights

* Ad Hoc Art / PMP silkscreens Fay's favorite images right before your eyes

and last but not least...

* The Date with Fay Auction *

Refuge is a dancer's paradise loft lush with bouncy wooden floors, ample ceilings, an earth-shaking wall of sound and absolutely no residential neighbors. 1532 Decatur Street at Irving, Bushwick. L to Halsey, exit at Wykoff Ave. Walk five blocks down George St to Decatur and take a right. It's half way down the block on your left. There will be a cash bar.

Please help keep this event friendly by inviting all of your friends (and their friends) but not posting it to message boards or sending it to event listing sites and newsletters.

...now it's over, and we all got we wanted for once ! 28 years of Republican domination (between Reagan/Bush, Congress and the Supreme Court) have crashed and burned, and we can all be thankful!

I for one am more relieved than overjoyed about the general outcome...I most definitely am happy that McCain and even more Palin will not be in the White House...and I am really really happy to see so many people make it out to vote, despite the major obstacles around the country...the presence of a man of color in the White House is of course a monumental moment in itself.....Obama will be a very welcome change to the last eight years, no doubt...

but NOW in the days after, I am hopeful, curious, and a bit wary of what will come next....the "left" has a unique opportunity to actually have an say in national affairs, but everyone will have to continue to push the chief executive and Congress to make those moves. I do not have lots of faith that Obama will make all the progressive changes some may be expecting..at least not without a good push from us!

We all knew in New York that Obama was a shoe-in months ago, even before the economic collapse, the choice of Palin, or all of the McCain campaign missteps...so it wasn't hard for me to make the choice to vote 3rd party really..if I lived in Ohio or Florida or a dozen other borderline states it would have been a much more difficult decision for me...I understand that a mass movement of unity was needed to make sure the Republicans got the slap they so richly deserved...and I am very happy that my partner and others I know made the trip to their home states that were in jeopardy of Republican-engineered theft (theft not support...make no mistake there was massive election fraud and rigging in this election....more below--)

in the end, between my choice of Nader and McKinney, I voted for McKinney....I support both candidates, and their views are quite similar on many issues..I tipped toward McKinney mainly because of her courage on the floor of Congress...from vocally supporting the impeachment of Bush/Cheney, to here willingness to confront such untouchable issues as questioning the events of 9-11 and vote integrity, Cynthia McKinney has raised issues that neither Obama or McCain would ever touch. It's one thing to talk about "change" and "hope" endlessly on the campaign trail without being too specific, it's another to express controversial ideas and support controversial bills for true (not token) change while in office. ...

so here's my main reasons I don't think Obama is the savior of humanity!--now I can say it and you can't call me a traitor or a "spoiler" like some did when I supported Nader in the past....

pretty simple really---Obama is Bill Clinton---he is a centrist, massively corporate funded Democrat who does not support true national free national health care, wants to expand war not end it, fully supported the $700 billion dollar gift to corporations without any comment at all....he is a Clinton-style center-right Democrat, not a true progressive! sorry but it's true! He said as much on the campaign trail---unequivocal supporter of Israel, supports the continuing massive military budget...maybe he needed to be more center to get in..so now maybe he can live up to his reputation? we'll see, but so far his Cabinet picks are not even close to progressive....

for things that I notice or that affect me outside of the bigger issues...

1--never once in the hundred speeches I heard from Obama did he mention "working class" or "poor" people...strictly "middle class" everything....I have never been middle class so I don't know what their needs are honestly! I dd know that working class people are the ones who always get nailed every time there are problems in the economy worse than anyone else....and its working class/ poor people that made a huge difference in this election...

2--maybe he used to, but it the last few months Obama and the Democratic party as a whole have completely ignored the massive issue of voting integrity, for reason I just do not understand....since 2000 and Greg Palast's exposure of the election fraud in Florida, there is massive evidence of rigged machines, voters illegally removed from voter lists, easily hacked and faulty machines that somehow seem to always tilt towards the Republicans and seem to break the most often in African American neighborhoods....at least a few of the close House races this year may have been swung by these same tricks (see Virginia, Alaska, Minnesota...even Tim Robbins in NYC has a 5 hour saga when he found out he could not vote at his polling place of 15 years and had to get a coutrt order to vote!)----
----why is Obama silent on this? As far as I can see it would only help the Democrats? I don't get it? ...I hope Obama implements some serious national reform of the entire electoral system..but I don't hold my breath, since he's the one who at one time supported public campaign financing, then went against it !

3- in the overall scheme it's not so big, but to me it still matters...because I am one of the only people in the party scene of NYC that remembers VP Joe Biden was the creator and pusher of the dreadful RAVE Act, way back in 2002 into 2003. The first national law ever to target a music culture was entirely the brainchild of our new Veep. Famed segregationist Strom Thurmond was one of the original co-signers--great company! ..and even after two Democrats removed their support for the bill (in itself unusual) after massive pressure, Joe renamed the bill and attached it to a bill concerning an alert system for child abductions....Thanks Joe!

etc..etc...I saw his mentor from Harvard saying how he thought Obama and Michelle both would be Republicans, that they were both quite conservative...

but with ALL that said--I really hope we take this opportunity to keep Obama to his word and make some real "change" happen!-- it is a great opportunity, and I am happy for all of us (esp after those awful selections/thefts of 00 and 04)----but I do think it is needed out there to keep up a debate and challenge everything, always!!! no government by anyone ever gives freedom, freedom is always TAKEN!! every single good thing in this country has come from people demanding it --

please feel free to comment, and thank you for reading my rant...

here’s a word on the next Kids rubulad, April 12th Saturday, from Yung:
Hi everyone!

This is a reminder that we will be having a Kids Rubulad Party on April 12th from 2pm to 8pm.

This time around, we wanted to let you all know with a little more advanced warning so you can better take part in this weeks activity. We were all very inspired by the Bio Bus last party (http://www.biobus.org/), and have decided to explore the idea of biofuel for this next gathering. With the help of your little one, please spend time collecting a small amount of used cooking oil to bring. We will safely demonstrate how it can be re-used as simple lamps. If you have any other interesting uses, please bring some supplies to demonstrate it to the kids!

We will also be talking about the Kids Rubulad Mermaid Parade theme, and asking for input and support and participation.

Also, very important, the party will end at 8pm this time. We are overlapping with the big people Rubulad and would like to be courteous and have the place ready in time for them. Any extra hands to help clean at the end of the evening would be much appreciated.

As always, there will be food, drinks, music, arts, and dancing! Lots of hula hoops, smacking at a pinata, face painting, and general mischief! It is always FREE and you are encouraged to participate in any way you choose!

Please check out the flickr pics as they are pretty sweet!

See you then!
