Dr. Deepak Chopra recently came to BookPeople to discuss his new book The Third Jesus.  Dr. Chopra discussed some of the more illuminating points of the best-seller, and signed books for a very appreciative crowd.  He also had some super-cool glasses:

Texas Governor Rick Perry recently joined us for his new book On my Honor.  We were thrilled to see so many Boy Scouts and their families out for this event!  Even though the signing line was long and some super-tiny Scouts had to wait a loooong time, they were all incredibly polite and well-behaved - the essence of a true Scout!

Robert Leleux visited us recently for his book The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy.  Robert was funny, kind and highly entertaining.  If you haven't picked up a copy of his book, you should.  Right now.  We'll wait.

Legendary radio producer Dave Isay will be at BookPeople tonight with his new book, Listening Is an Act of Love.  Dave is the founder of StoryCorps, the largest oral history project in American history, and has often been featured on National Public Radio.  Join us Tuesday, January 29th at 7:30 PM to  meet Dave, have your book signed, listen to audio clips from StoryCorps, and meet some central Texans featured in the  book.  Nobody does it better than BookPeople, Texas' largest independent  bookstore.

Love is a Mix Tape

Rob Sheffield, rock critic, Rolling Stone contributor, and BookPeople favorite, will be making a special appearance today at 5PM. His heartbreaking and hip memoir, Love Is a Mix Tape, documents Sheffield's idyllic five-year marriage to his unforgettable wife Renee through the songs on his personal mix tapes. Stitched together, the songs help to tell the story of their love, marriage and her tragic death. This touching story will strike a chord in anyone who has used songs to try to express the ineffable.

There is a tradition of sorts on Lamar Blvd.  The annual softball game between BookPeople and Waterloo Records (music store extraordinaire).

Normally, this clash of the titans is marred by the fact that Waterloo always crushes us.  Badly.

However, BookPeople is proud to announce that, for the first time ever, LITERACY HAS TRIUMPHED!!

WE WON!!!

all i'm saying is, you should've been here.  saul williams was so freaking amazing - not only did he perform three of his poems, but he stayed around and talked for 2 and a half hours!  he skipped out on most of his sound check for his concert that night (NIN) to stay and hang out at bookpeople.
