Formed at university in Bristol by Irishman Cillian Logue and Londoner Guy Stevenson, the band started out as an acoustic folk act. Following their true calling towards a punkier style, the two upped sticks to London, advertised for musicians in various lonely hearts columns, and stumbled across a couple of gems; Ozzie mod fanatic Tim Burton.
In the past year The Gin Riots wooed the crowd at Torontos NXNE 2008, springboarding them to be invited to showcase at SXSW in Austin Texas 2009. During SXSW KLBJfm radio station sponsor of the festival called the band "awesome" and their show on Fox TV Austin hailed them as "brilliant". The Gin Riots were selected by Warner Movies and Myspace to perform at Guy Ritichie's private London premiere of his last film Rocknrolla.
They have been praised by BBCs Tom Robinson and with their video in collaboration with George A. Romero for their debut single "The Polka" due for release early next year, it has been a great year.
They have just been in Great Eastern Studios (The Horrors, White Lies) recording their second single and the band are currently writing their first album to follow up their self released EP, Mother Ruin 2007.
Finally, after a long wait SUMMERSKISS RECORDS have released "A Tribute to The Afghan Whigs" and yours truly have contributed their cover "BE SWEET" to the album.
It's a much-anticipated release, especially for all you hard-core Whigs fans!

Boooonnnnnnnjjjjjjouuuuuurrrr....

Swivelling in my chair yesterday in an office belonging to some swanky music lawyer, I smiled a little to myself at the bizarre nature of this industry. The power of rock and roll, of counter cultural music, of music in general I guess, comes from spontaneity, dreams, howls of rebellion. The thing that moves anyone to write music well has everything to do with emotion and letting go. And yet, here I am, thought I, concentrating bloody hard on holding it together, on talking business with what most musicians and music fans would regard as my natural fat cat foe. This is definitely no revolutionary thought, and I'm not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with the situation, it's just a strange contradictory world to exist in.

Someone who knows all about and indeed revels in this music/marketing paradox is that wise old owl from The Smiths, Morrisey.  He was in attendance at a gig we played the other day, which I feel is an honor if ever there was one. I was mighty impressed with the look of intense concentration and genuine appreciation on his face as he took in the headline act, Doll and the Kicks. They are a jagged indie/ska band with a saucy and charismatic peroxide blonde singer.  Apparently they'll be supporting the big man on his upcoming tour so watch out for them. As the gig wound to a close, our cheeky young scamp of a drummer Jack Riot shoved a CD into Morissey's hand and received a wink for his troubles…

Elsewhere in London Town this month, The Gin Riots have been come onto by lesbians at The Agent Provocateur party in Camden, lulled into a womb-like state of innocence and melancholy by the extraordinary dulcet tones of singer songwriter Laura Marling, looked on in horror as our guitarist Cillian almost impaled himself on a fence for the second time in less than a month, and whooped for blooming joy as Barack Obama rocked his way to the Whitehouse. Incidentally, we've still not heard back from that cad Russell Brand about appearing in our video. I shall let ye posted on that one …

We played at the preview screening for Guy Ritchie's new  film this evening and I'd like to thank everyone who made it down for getting involved.. Please accept out massive apologies for the shit sound in the venue...i know most bands are not adverse to blaming soundmen for their bad workmanship, but this was really taking the piss...Anyhoo, the night turned out to be a fun one...we hung out with Super Hans from Peep Show backstage and he was very funny indeed - got him to pose with our bassist Tim, who looks uncannily like David Mitchell...

The real fun, however, only began when we got back at the gin palace. On arriving home with no keys, Cillian decided to climb two floors to get in through the living room window, then got into a fight with our neighbour who turns out to be his girlfriend's ex boyfriend and who came out of his house bollock naked wielding a baseball bat and baying for Irish blood...having chased him back inside, Cillian then had to deal with four policemen who'd been sent round by said maniac to arrest his lady! Oh my giddy giddy gosh!

We're a bit shell  shocked by all this drama...and the 6 straight shots of tequila we've just have haven't made it any more palatable..Cillians just on his way to pick her up from the cop shop...woah!

anyhoo, new tunes are in our midst, almost finished and ready to go so keep your keen lil eyes peeled on our myspace page for more gems from the logue/stevenson/burton/mcgruer warchest...

love to your mothers, guy de riot xx

Current mood:  drunk
While in Toronto for North By Northeast Music Festival 2008, Guy was asked to write a daily diary for The National Post Canada.
It was a musical, beery blur but great times were had. A limit to word count meant ALOT was left out, but here's a summary.
Oh, and the 'Guy De Riot' nom du plume? That's the Post's edit, but it sounds pretty suave when pronounced with a French Canadian accent!
