Great mix of ska, reggae, punk and hardcore and some chit-chat about anti-racist organizing and the NORTHERN AGGRESSION: PROJECT BONEYARD VOLUME II compilation...

About the show:

10pm-12am
CKUT, 90.3FM, Montreal!
Greetings radio junkies,
Yes, this beautiful/miserable planet of ours is a racist racist place. In
Canada, migrants are being deported by the thousands every year while we
talk about “reasonable accomodations”, indigenous land is getting
swallowed up for the winter Olympics and to build condos for the rich, and
no, Palestine still ain’t free.
But luckily, people in the punk rock and ska community are fighting back.
Our special guest on the show this week was Nora Flanagan, who is the
project coordinator for the Turn It Down campaign against white power
music. Nora spoke with us about how her group is using community
organizing as a tool to counter a new rise in racist hate music, and also
about the new “Northern Agression” compilation, recently released on
Insurgence Records. Northern Aggression brings together some of North
America’s finest anti-racist punk, hardcore, and hip-hop acts to give a
big middle finger to racists everywhere. From the dirty rock from whence
they crawled, to the halls of the House of Commons in Ottawa, NAZI PUNKS
FUCK OFF!
Make sure you check out Turn It Down and Northern Aggression and SUPPORT
YOUR LOCAL ANTI-RACISTS!

From Profane Existence:

"Back in 2005, Insurgence Records had a fifth-anniversary party in Toronto. Not content to just sit back and let this milestone pass by, Insurgence brought in the almighty antifascist skinhead legends THE OPPRESSED all the way from Wales for their one and only North American show, plus Montreal’s mighty PROWLERS as an added bonus. As you can expect, the show was sold out as skins and punks from across the continent flooded the streets of Toronto. I was supposed to go, but it fell through. I was disappointed, as were countless others. Thankfully, Insurgence did the right thing and put the OPPRESSED and the PROWLERS performances onto DVD for us poor bastards who missed out. This disc features both bands’ sets in their entirety shot with multi-cameras and recorded live off the soundboard. The footage is great, the sound is perfect. Both bands put on a stellar performance. I was hoping for some bonus features though, but there aren’t any. Oh well, the bands stand up well enough on their own! (DI)"

Great Band, Great Record!

THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE
Death And Dishonesty:
If you like hard edged Punk Rock in the vein of Bonecrusher and Discipline then you're going to love the Blackout Brigade. From the opening song 'Open Scars' this is full on Punk music right through to the closing song 'Dead Or Alive'. The tidy guitar work and bass lines really make this album what it is and you wont be disappointed with this album at all. For me tracks such as 'Death And Dishonesty', 'Firing Squad', 'On Our Own' and 'Fight For Your Life' really did it for me. When so many Punk bands these days sounding so lame it's hard to want to check out a new band on the scene but the Blackout Brigade are worthy of a listen. They're one of the few Punk bands with so much urgency in their sound and I'm glad they're flying the Punk flame. Top band. 9/10 Street Voice News - June 2009

BLACKOUT BRIGADE:
Death and Dishonesty: CD
Ah, it’s the old “trick the reviewer by the look of your CD trick.” The dark cityscape and calligraphy style band title had me thinking I was about to venture into the territory of grouchy, growly metalihardcore. I couldn’t have been more wrong or more pleasantly surprised. The first song sounds as if you had Social Distortion getting wasted in the alley behind the club with Agnostic Front. Weird. After that early rough spot, it smoothed into good, if not standard, snotty punk that wouldn’t sound out of place on TKO Records. Soaring guitars + Piss + Vinegar = A good record to tip a few beers to. –Ty Stranglehold/Razorcake (Insurgence)

From Maximumrocknroll...

The Blackout Brigade
Death And Dishonesty

Right on! Another solid release from Canada's premier street punk rock 'n' roll label out of Toronto! Insurgence has been consistently putting out top-notch material from some of the world's finest and best known left-leaning bands including ANGELIC UPStarts and THE OPPRESSED and THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE fits right in quite nicely for being relative newcomers. The music is tight and melodic with lots of chugga-chugga guitars layered with catchy leads and there are loads of big chanting/sing-along chourses. Highly recommended for any fan of really agressive and melodic streetpunk (ML)

OUT NOW ON INSURGENCE RECORDS...DEATH AND DISHONESTY...DEBUT FROM THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE

Photobucket

From the depths of the cold Canadian Prairies lurk the beer-fuelled, whiskey-driven, sing-along tales of the hardship, abuse and woe that is Blackout Brigade.

Formed after the breakup of the Oi/Hardcore sensation, The Knockarounds and the disbanding of the soulful '77 street punk style of The Crackdown, these outcasts quickly started putting a new set together, blending the two ex-bands' songs and influences into one formidable outlet of rage and angst.

With a live sound like brass knuckles to an ear drum and faces that only a blind mother could tolerate, this quintet of working class lowlifes have been packing clubs, dropping jaws and slaying critics since the first show in the summer of 2008. They've never looked back.

A tri-vocal assault of catchy street choruses inspired by overseas rockers the likes of Cocksparrer, The Bones and Discipline fused with the energy and angst from American punk/hardcore bands like Blood For Blood and Agnostic Front. The Blackout Brigade play a hard-rocking, no bullshit style of street rock-n-roll, comprised of breakneck bass lines, panty-melting guitar solos, and fist-pounding anthemic vocals. This band is sure to keep your head rocking and the bottles dropping.

Check out THE BLACKOUT BRIGADE and give the tune "Open Scars" a listen...amazing.

BROTHERHOOD is the official video of the legendary one-off North American performance of THE OPPRESSED, supported by Montreal's top ranking skinhead band, THE PROWLERS. These two powerhouse acts give it their all at a party weekend in Toronto to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of Insurgence Records.

The performance was shot with three cameras and recorded live off the deck. Both sets are presented here intact, including never-before released tracks from both bands.

DEATH IN CUSTODY - Infected With Rage CD
This disc flys by you so fucking fast that you don't know what the hell hit you! Eleven tracks spat out in fourteen fucking minutes! This 4 piece outfit hail from Detroit, MI and you can tell that they are heavily influenced by NEGATIVE APPROACH and early AGNOSTIC FRONT. The music is tight and heavy and the vocals have a definate 80s sound to them. Thumbs up! (Ken Ciderpunk)

THE FALLOUT - Dismantlement CD
I really enjoyed their interview in the last issue and equally enjoyed this CD too. A breath of fresh air, with their catchy 70's punk styled songs. Good quality, full of hooks and great songs. Really well thought out lyrics and they have a great political view and plenty of attitude. (Mel Hughes)

THE PRESS The Complete Press 1984-1994 CD
Let me start by saying Oi! is not really my thing. I've always felt it was something of a nebulous concept and if a song doesn't have someone shouting Oi! at some point I just assume it's plain old punk (like that's a bad thing). But with that said, this collection of 15 tracks is a solid listen. Despite their heritage these guys remind me a more of WIPERS and SOCIAL DISTORTION than THE CLASH or THE BUSINESS, but that's just me. This stuff is catchy as hell and I think I'll be singing along in a matter of days. The songs are mostly about the working class blues, hanging out in bars, and giving the bosses their just desserts. Also, there's a song with klaxons, so this CD is automatically a winner in my book. Includes a sweet foldout lyric sheet/show flyer. Cool. (Matt Indignant)

DEATH IN CUSTODY-Infected With Rage (Insurgence, CD)

I played a little word game while playing this long-overdue release from Detroit maulers Death In Custody (their previous demo came out quite awhile ago). I played a little word game while blasting this on the stereo and wrote down various impressions while listening and came up with "agitation," "mean," "toughness," "no BS." I mean, start with the title. That tells you right there this ain’t no garden party. Death In Custody come right at ’ya with a tough, about-to-explode hardcore sound that has a brawny approach but avoids the chug/breakdown element. Instead, part of the influence comes from older Boston and NYC hardcore and I was thinking that before hearing their cover of Last Rights-via-Slapshot’s "Do What You Want." A lyrical line that sums it all up? "That smirk that covers your face is where my boot will find its place." That’s from "Done," it’s about an asshole boss and there’s also reference made to said individual "staring down the barrel of a gun." Subtle. That’s one word that didn’t make my list. The March 2008 issue of MAXIMUM ROCK N ROLL has 2007 Best Of lists...Insurgence Records came in third on Swingin' Ramsey Kanaan's list!

"3. Insurgence Records

It's definately not a competition, but Canada's INSURGENCE RECORDS comes a close third. They've issued some wonderful complete collections, including that of NYC's THE PRESS...America's first Oi! band who actually had a brain, and founder of S.H.A.R.P (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice). Then, of course, there was the Skinhead Times collection by THE OPPRESSED, a Welsh skin band who, inspired by THE PRESS, founded S.H.A.R.P in the UK. Skinhead Times collects all their originals from the '80s and the '90s on two discs. To be honest, this came out in 2005, but I just got it for review in 2007! And, not to be left out Insurgence (who only release explicitely left-wing/anti-fascist/working class outfits) did a 'new'record with THE FALLOUT. Not skinheads, but smart as fuck pop-punks that sound like a frenetic J-Church with similarly intelligent, wordly and personal concerns..."

Check out these and other great outfits at INSURGENCE RECORDS

Thanks Ramsey, and Cheers!
