It's such a sad day for those who appreciated Michael Jackson today.

A day of celebration of a glorious life.  But sadness that it was taken so quickly and so soon. And denying children of a father and a family of a beloved brother and son.  I was so moved by the poem written by Maya Angelou at the memorial I wanted to post it here.  As I cried my heart out today I realized that it was for the greatness we lost and perhaps some shame for what a cruel world did to someone so unique.  It was the irony that in spite of what little the world gave him at times, this man gave every atom in his being to the dance of life.  And for a handful of years we were lucky enough to bask in the glory of that magnificent light.  As someone said to me recently, each of us has a flame inside us that needs igniting.  Michael did that for me as a 13 year old boy.  And though he is no longer among us, I like to think that my flame burns a little bit brighter because of him and his gift of music, dance and wonderment.  I carry it with me and I hope that I can be selfless enough to pass it on to anyone who should need to find their unique spark.

We Had Him - By Maya Angelou

Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing, now that our bright and shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind.

Without notice, our dear love can escape our doting embrace. Sing our songs among the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon.....

The instant that Michael is gone, we know nothing. No clocks can tell time. No oceans can rush our tides with the abrupt absence of our treasure.....

Though we are many, each of us is achingly alone, piercingly alone.  Only when we confess our confusion can we remember that he was a gift to us and we did have him.

He came to us from the creator, trailing creativity in abundance.  Despite the anguish, his life was sheathed in mother love, family love, and survived and did more than that.

He thrived with passion and compassion, humor and style. We had him whether we know who he was or did not know, he was ours and we were his.....

We had him, beautiful, delighting our eyes.   His hat, aslant over his brow, and took a pose on his toes for all of us.  And we laughed and stomped our feet for him.

We were enchanted with his passion because he held nothing. He gave us all he had been given.....

Today in Tokyo, beneath the Eiffel Tower, in Ghana's Black Star Square. In Johannesburg and Pittsburgh, in Birmingham, Alabama, and Birmingham, England.

We are missing Michael.  But we do know we had him, and we are the world.

When I was a little boy, he was my hero.
When I was a young man, he was my sanity.
Taking me away from the pain in my life and filling my heart with joy and wonder.
When I was 13 I saw him live in concert and from the second he arrived on stage I knew what I was going to do for the rest of my life.    It was September 1987 and I have to this day never seen anything more extraordinary.   To this day I've never seen a reaction from audience like the one he received.  I've never seen magic and glitter fly through the air and witness that electricity start up hearts the way he did that night.  And now I'm certain the world never again will.  Thank you Michael Jackson.  On behalf of dreamers the world over.   The world is a duller place without you.  I'm so privileged to have lived in the same lifetime to witness even a moment of your glory.

New Years Eve has officially sold out - can't wait to see the peeps who have tickets.
In other news, I'm still gathering songs and working on sounds for my new album
for 2010.  It's all sounding goooood.   Nothing to report really but wanted you to know I'm not slacking!

xD

I wanted to write and give the heads up there's only 20 tickets left to the NYE show in case there is someone who was intending to go but thought 'meh it's only june..I've got ages..'.
I'm sure they'll be gone by the weekend anyway but that's just a heads up from me.

In other news, Summer seems to have arrived in London and I regret not having air con!
I might be the only person in England who hates summer but lordy I do.

I've been recording in my home studio and stupidly busy working on stuff for my new album (scheduled for next year).   I've been blogging over at the fan club about it but the point is it's in the attic of my house and boy does it got hawt up there!

Here's a picture of me prematurely aging.

Photobucket

I'll eventually post some of the 'making of the album' blogs over here.
But if you're wondering why I'm a bit silent it's because I'm being the opposite of that in the studio!

I'm writing this from Paris, where I've taken a few days out to spend with my Mum who is visiting me from Australia.

It's so beautiful here - I'm always inspired by this town.

There's a French producer I'm dying to work with on my next record - and I sent off the email today to my

manager to get her to 'make it happen' (click click of the fingers). But while I'm here I'll send out nice

vibes and hope he gets them.

What else is going on?

I'll do it in point form, can't be arsed to be more poetic than necessary.

*Thanks for the wonderful birthday wishes etc. Had a great day, got amazingly spoilt and was

nice to have my mamma here. Went to Petersham Nurseries in their posh restaurant on the dirty

clay floor (ooh 'different!'). Was ace.

*I can't help it, I'm obsessed with 'Battlefield' by Jordin Sparks. Maybe I'm just obsessed with Ryan Tedder's

genius songwriting? Dunno. But it's stuck in my head.

*Please go see 'Let the right one in'. It moved me so much I wrote a song about it.

Nuff said. Be warned it's gory but the gore is secondary to the love story.

*Speaking of vampires, I feel strangely more connected to 'The Vampire Chronicles' ie the inspiration

for the name 'Savage Garden' than ever these days.

Running around Paris thinking how ironic it is that I was a kid who read Anne Rice and dreamed

of a word where Lestat existed. To then traveling to France for the first time in 1997 no now

being here whenever I feel like it, myself feeling a little bit like a old soul.

V cool

*The whole twitter, facebook (even blogging) generation is sort of weirding me out.

Sometimes I wonder if I should go against the already over saturated trend and just retreat more

into privateness to feel like I'm (we're?) not just a cookie cutter version of everything else out there.

A friend of mine had this great joke. He said, particularly about the blogger phenom - that opinions

on the internet are like assholes. Everyone's got one and not many of them are that interesting.

Lol.

Do we really need to know where we all are 24/7?

Still not sure yet = liking blogging and might continue to turn my own website into more a blog

in the future - but for now I'm twittering like every other hack ;) But I do get the feeling that

we're SO connected now that something has to give. Do you have any opinions on the subject?

* The Royksopp and Robyn single 'The girl and the Robot' is just lush. Can't get enough.

Um. That's it.

Love to you

I've been recording a secret side project album with my long term co
writer and collaborator Robert Conley over the past 2 years.  It was
finished and mixed in December last year and just last week the album
was mastered.

It's a band we call 'We Are Smug'.  Robert and I share lead vocal and
songwriting duties on everything, and up until this second, we haven't
spoken a word of it to anyone outside of our circle of friends.

But today, on my birthday, we've decided it's release day and if you
visit www.wearesmug.com you can download it for free.

This is not the direction of my next album, nor is 'free' the new
price for my music. This is just something I am doing because I can.

While you're digesting this, I'm hard at work on songs for a brand new
studio album for next year.  It's a big 'fuck off' pop record.   POP
with a capital P if you will.  You better have high expectations.

In the meantime, enjoy being Smug.
And Happy Birthday.

Post script : answers to some frequently asked questions

*I sing lead on 'Good Dress' 'Hot Tub Blues' 'Never Be the Same' 'Tear it Up' 'Shit on the Radio'

'Watching Me Watching You' and the second half of 'The Pressure'

I do BV's on all the other songs except for 'Fire it Up'

Rob sings 'Look What We've Started' 'Words That I can't Say' 'Fire it Up' and the first half of 'The Pressure'.

*Nope, that isn't pitch shift or any voice tricks on 'Hot Tub Blues' just me being a dick

*Nope we don't intend to tour it or promote it or take it to the radios.

It is what it is and that is free. And Smug.

*It was a fun creative outlet for two friends who wanted to do something with no rules and no

expectations

*When I say my next record is 'fuck off pop' I mean 'fuck off it's so good!' not 'please go away pop'.

It means 'fuck me that's a great pop album'.

*I swear a bit on the smug record, as I did above.

*I would have just leaked the album as a cool bootleg except none of you would have been able

to find it. But I still do wish it was just a little secret. But only slightly.

*I think our free smug record is better than a lot of records that are asking you for your money.

Just sayin'

;)

First things first, I never use my blog to promote friends or other musicians for the sake of it, unless it's something I really believe in and could stand behind. I'm so thrilled that this week has seen the release of an album produced and co written by none other than my main man Justin Shave. Justin is important in my camp because as well as being my live musical director he co produced 'Delicate' and co wrote some of the best tracks on there. Well this week sees the release of the album he worked his magic on : 'Atigoneland' by Antigone. She has quite honestly one of the most technically breathtaking voices live I've ever heard - and in many ways puts other 'divas' to bed without any supper! If it's your thing, do have a listen to the brilliant 'Antigoneland' which you can find HERE.

Photobucket

In other news, we've sold 80% of the tickets to New Years Eve and it's only April. If you are planning to go I would think about getting your ticket now because honestly we've done no advertising or promo yet, so I don't expect there to be any tickets come next month.

On to musical things - I have indeed been writing songs for my next album. I've gone all Swedish and though it's early days yet I can tell you the word is POP. Don't expect it until 2010 but work has indeed begun on the writing process. It's been lovely being in Stockholm and I could easily live here.

Things I'm obsessed with at the moment include the new Calvin Harris single, the single 'Daniel' by Bat for Lashes and the insanely gorgeous duet with Robyn and Royksopp.
Ahhhh music is my mamma!

It is with oodles of pleasure that I announce the videos from 'This Delicate Film We've Made' are now available on iTunes worldwide. The videos were originally released only in the UK on DVD - but as promised I've made each video available digitally worldwide for those in other parts of the world who wanted them. At the moment there is no 'package price' or 'buy album' option - and this is a technical fault with iTunes. So if you want to buy the entire package I would wait until they get their shiz together. But they are there individually now

Here's links to countries where it has surfaced so far.
I'm sure more countries will surface soon!

WHAT IS A SONG WORTH TO YOU?

Photobucket

The changing nature of the music industry is something that has become a phrase
that gets bandied about in industry articles or by managers to explain why a u2 album
can debut at number one but sell considerably less copies than the last one.
But does anyone outside the music industry really know what it means?
I haven't seen a hell of a lot of discussion about the idea of the worth of music
to the average person. Words like 'free' or 'illegal' get thrown around.
But does anyone talk about 'worth'?

Popjustice pointed out that in the UK recently, the number one single by Kelly
Clarkson was actually on sale at Amazon cheaper than the price of a first class
stamp.

I thought about this : a stamp is something you put on an envelope (probably
a bill!) and send it off never to see it again.
Whereas a song..
Well! A song is for life.
Think about the places, the moments, the memories you will associate with
a song! A great song is with you forever, underscoring all the poignant moments
in your life. Giving back to you forever thankful for your initial one time investment
you made in it.
The song keeps giving.
The value you place on the song, the price you paid for it, funds the making of more
of them. And so exists this sort of agreement between you and the song.

These days, there are fewer and fewer places a songwriter can get paid to make
a living. And let me clarify something here - the idea that musicians or rather
rock stars are 'rich' is something now reserved for the old school elite or the
handful of artists who's albums manage to become a true bestseller each year.
But for the majority of new artists or those selling smaller quantities - there is virtually
no income from actual sales.

You're probably aware of the recent dispute in the UK between youtube and
the collecting agency PPL. Rather than pay the royalties due in proportion to
the number of plays music gets on Youtube - the video sharing portal has decided
to pull music videos.

The amount of views, and traffic that music videos bring to youtube is evident
in the amount of advertising on there. Major corporations like 02 for example
spend a fortune getting to advertise to you. And Google, who own Youtube,
take those profits. But the songwriter, the musician who's hard earned work,
hopes and dreams and the the creator of the magic of which I spoke about in the beginning
presumably has far less worth.

It's sad to me when a legend like Annie Lennox - doesn't know when or if she'll make
a new album simply because it's up in the air as to if anyone will actually pay to make
it - let alone make enough income from it to justify doing it again.

What's my point? My point isn't directed at 'you' the music audience. I guess it's a
societal comment about what the devaluing of the worth of music has done to the future
of music.

There's been talk of all sorts of different models that might try to embrace the digital age
rather than ignore it. There's always talk of punishing the consumer for 'stealing' music
but the reality is - major corporations and technology providers (and let's face it
ISP's) have turned a blind eye to the devaluing of music since file sharing began.
Instead of punishing people who love music - if we're not willing to go and pay for it
anymore - why not introduce a pay for play system in the same way that radio plays
performers? If those who are currently making all the money out of music (ie youtube,
google, AOL for example) owned up and started acknowledging and paying for the content
(either legitimate or 'illegal') that draws their customers online, then maybe the future of
the music industry wouldn't be in such a fog.

I had my annual check up at the ear nose and throat surgeon to check
my vocal chords today. I know that sounds nuts, but considering I've built a career
around an essential piece of physical equipment that is the result of D.N.A
lottery is not lost on me. It's amazing how those two tiny pieces of skin no bigger
than a thumb nail have given me so many opportunities. So understandably
you always want to know they're in good shape!

Photobucket

I'm happy to say they are fine and dandy.

It's gross though - I don't know if anyone here is a singer or has ever seen or
had to go through the procedure - but it involves placing a fiber optic camera
down your airways. This is done via a long thin tube like instrument that
is placed UP YOUR NOSE and then travels through the nasal passages,
down the throat and peeks into the voice box.
The surgeon can then see your vocal folds and tell immediately if they show any sign
of damage. But it feels disgusting lol.
Here's a fantastic spiffy diagram. No, this is not my genitals. But this will give you
an idea of what I do for you ;)

Photobucket

It's every singer's nightmare waiting for the thumbs up.
And I'm relieved to hear things are great each time. But it always makes me so
grateful when I leave. I want to click my heels and start tap dancing down
the street.

There's so much stuff going on behinds the scenes in my little world at
the moment. I wish I could tell you more - but it all involves future music
from me. I think some time this year I might start working on writing new music
for my next album - but it won't come out any time soon. If I manage to finish recording
a new album it wouldn't come out until sometime in 2010. But it's nice to know or share
that I'm at least marinading the idea.

In the meantime I've been working
with a few labels here in the UK penning possible songs for some of their
artists. It's never ever set in stone - so I don't talk about it much unless
it's 100% confirmed. None of it is but if someone records one of my songs
I'll shout it from the rooftops, don't worry! If nothing else it's been a fun exercise.

I'm off to Sweden next week to do some writing there, and then off to the U.S
in Spring on a trip for more song tinkering.

Finally, the news I've been dying to tease you about more is that I'm almost 99.% sure
I'm doing a New Years Eve show in London this year.
It will be my only live public performance this year. More news and let's face it, needless
teasing, when I have more deets.

What am I listening to at the moment..
I dig the U2 record big time.
I like the Lady Ga Ga record. I'm obsessed with Just Jack's single 'Embers'. I think it's genius.
I thought the Brits were dull.
I thought the Academy Awards were amazing (due mostly to Hugh Jackman).
I feel slightly sad for and yet intrigued about Michael Jackson's concerts coming up. Mostly because I feel like
every ounce of joy and life was sucked out of him by the tabloids and money grubbing thieves years
ago and he looked today .. I don't know.. it just made me sad for him. But he still fascinates me. I wish sometimes just being
great, no AMAZING once was enough to satisfy the public.

MmmmmK I've rambled on enough.
Just wanted to since I haven't properly for a while.

Big loads of love to you and yours.

xxD
