Here's how it goes.... 1. Pick 20 of your favorite movies. 2. Go to IMDB and find a quote from each movie. 3. Post them in a note for everyone to guess. 4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie. 5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDB search functions. That's cheating and it ruins the fun.
-"She *is* Lana Turner." -"Have you ever tried spreading ideals on a cracker?!" -"I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way..." -"Soon the Thuggies will be all-powerful." -"The pellet with the poison's in the chalice with the palace, and the vessel with the pestle holds the brew that is true!" -"Just because it is doesn't mean it should be." -"Others?! Why'd you say others?! Do you mean...others?! More than one others?!" -"She's got these big ol' horns comin' out right above her ears. She's ugly as sin, but a sweet gal. And a hell of a cook." -"I have become the monster you were intended to be." -"I am insane with anger!" -"That's the bunk!" "That's what I'm trying to tell you, *that's his bunk!*" -"...and we must not fail, AND WE SHALL WIN! HAIL!" -"Sargent Amiel...Amiel? Sargent Amiel Klinger. No, I don't believe it either." -"Fry! That's it--his name was Fry!" -"I know you WANT to show it to the Laker Girls, but you must NEVER show it to the Laker Girls." -"I won't tell Harriet anything happened." "Uh...Rose...nothing *did* happen." "Don't worry, Charlie...just be careful." -"I'm not the guy you kill. I'm the guy you buy! Are you so fucking blind that you don't even see what I am? I sold out Arthur for 80 grand. I'm your easiest problem and you're gonna kill me?" -"A four-year-old child could understand this. Run out and find me a four-year-old child." -"You know, as Prime Minister, I could have him killed." -"What do you want with me?" "Much."
Goooooooooood luck!!

The head of horror movie website Arrow in the Head posted an article yesterday entitled "F*ck you Twilight!" As most of you know by now, the movie 'Twilight' (based upon the first of the über-popular book series by Stephanie Meyer) is about to be released next week - you must have seen the book, posters, previews, banners, or movie tie-in merchandise around by now - and there are a TON of ultra, ultra-excited fans out there. If you're one of them, good for you.
I read the book myself recently. I liked it, although it didn't throttle me; it was a nice, quiet, and subtle romance - which got fairly creepy towards the end. I do plan on seeing the movie, even if I'm not ultra-excited; I think it'll probably be better than the book (yes, you read that right), and although I think Robert Pattinson isn't the most obvious choice to play the beautiful Edward, I'll still give him a chance.
All that said...you're probably wondering why I mentioned the "F*ck you Twilight!" article. Take a look at this:
"This is not news but it needs to be said - all of us here at AITH would like to take a moment to say F*CK YOU IN THE EAR TWILIGHT! Don't get us wrong we'll keep reporting on the damn thing - its our job- but that doesn't mean that the HORROR FAN IN US isn't totally annoyed and fed up with this over-hyped, trampling teens, over exposed, genre Tampon. So once more, for the record, F*CK YOU TWILIGHT! Get released already and f*ck off! NOTE: Worst part of it is, I'll have to review it... bugh... suck to be me."
And yes, I'll admit it up front, I copied that without permission, and will gladly remove it if told to do so by "The Arrow" himself. For the time being, my point has to be made.
While the crew of Arrow In the Head snarl, scoff, snicker and smear the 'Twilight' movie beyond recognition (all BEFORE actually seeing it, I might add), I can't help but wonder why they're even paying it attention. Why?
Because 'Twilight' is NOT horror. It's not intended to be, and suspenseful scenes aside, I'm sure the movie will not attempt it.
So for these so-called professionals to go out of their way and use their own website to mock a movie that they haven't even seen yet because it's not even out...well, I think that's pretty damn immature and UNprofessional.
I might roll my eyes, scoff at, and get annoyed at the mere mention of, say, 'Step Brothers' - does that mean I can fairly criticize it? FUCK NO! I don't want to see it, I don't plan to see it, and yet if I do end up seeing it sometime, the opinion I'd make about it would only matter BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN THE DAMN THING.
It's ridiculous how immature, jaded, and pretentious the world has gotten (especially towards movies). It's a good thing that there are some still out there who know how to say "I think" and "in my opinion" when sharing their opinions - that alone is the first step towards having a worthy voice, and eventually, a respectable critic.
Oh well. Me? I'm going to see 'Twilight' - and whether I love it or loath it, think it's awesome or a giant suck-fest, at least I'm giving the thing a fair chance, which is more than I'll be willing to bet the schmucks at Arrow in the Head are going to do.
Peace out.

On December 2nd (little more than a month away), Fox plans on FINALLY re-releasing the long out-of-print 1998 film THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE. It'll have two discs, jam-packed with bonus features. For those of us who loved the show, loved this movie, loved the new movie (or one of you who hated it, and want to go back to the old one), this should be colossally good news. Well, unless you own a Blu-Ray player, you can go fuck yourselves. Fox only plans on re-releasing FIGHT THE FUTURE ..ay. Someone told me recently, "Get with the times, go buy a Blu-Ray player." Well, I can't afford it - to say nothing of the economy. I'd rather spend $20 or so on a standard DVD, rather than $200+ on the player and then another $40 or so for the Blu-Ray itself. And I know I'm not alone in this. Not to mention Fox is shooting themselves in the feet, because while they think they're going to earn more this way, they're actually going to earn far less than if they had the expanded market for the rather big audience that would buy it if it were on standard DVD. So it doesn't just screw us non-Blu-Ray owners, it screws Fox themselves. So, I've started a petition to help bring The X-Files: Fight the Future to STANDARD, 2-disc DVD. The link is right here: The X-Files: Fight the Blu-Ray Petition(or copy & paste: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/the-x-files-fight-the-blu-ray ) When I have enough signatures, I'm going to send this directly to Fox, and make sure that they know that there are hungry fans out there who want this movie on standard DVD! C'mon, X-Philes - we want to believe - not to convert. (Not all of us anyway, and certainly not yet.) Fight the Blu-Ray, and bring The X-Files: Fight the Future to DVDs everywhere!

I can sum it all up in one verbal exhalation: "WHOOF!"
'The Keeper' is a dense, dense, dense meditation not on fear, or gore, or even suspense, but on DARKNESS...and lots of it. There were a few parts of this book that genuinely made me uncomfortable - I almost skipped a couple of parts near the end, in fact. But it was beautiful too, in how Mrs. Langan didn't build scares, or drop them in randomly, but just...revealed them, because they were already there. You go into this book not watching things of dread and evil unfold to you, but rather YOU unfold to THEM. This...was one hell of a moody read.
Imagine my surprise when I saw that her next book, 'The Missing,' has intimate ties to this. It may be a while before I get to that one--I need to catch my breath!
Thank you, Mrs. Langan, for giving me a new reason to say that when done right...horror can truly be HORROR.

Only the top one is in order. The rest I'll take as available (which, needless to say, I kind of doubt will happen).
1--Kolchack the Nightstalker's classic straw hat. - Kumar's "Meekrab" shirt from HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE. - Monsieur Hulot's hat. Actually, his general wardrobe from movie to movie, especially his pipe, shoes, socks, and umbrella. Movies include LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR HULOT, MON ONCLE, PLAYTIME, and TRAFIC. - Dade Murphy's leather jacket from HACKERS. Never lost its style, to me.
That's all I could think of. Well, I WARNED you it'd be random...

I got this from the official website of the German ambient soundtrack doomrock band The Ocean, on the page about their latest album, 'Precambrian.' Read it and think.
"Please try to absorb this album in its entirety - artwork, lyrics and music is one, and each song only unfurls its full meaning in the context of all other songs and art on the album. Precambrian is our stance against MySpace-induced volatileness and transience, against the postmodern notion of music as unseizable data, against a preconception of music in terms of how much space it takes up on your hard-drive... it is an album for people who still believe in the idea that an album can be more, and should be more, than the sum of its tracks."
True, they're talking about 'Precambrian' in particular, but they're also talking about something bigger: the value of songs over albums, which seems to be plaguing the world nowadays thanks to that spawn of all evil known as the Internet.
I fully support ALBUMS, and even though I own an iPod and take up tons of gigabytes of space on my hard drive with music, it's almost entirely from CDs I go out and buy and copy. I never download music unless it's a rare track, something for someone else, or a single song I'm interested in but don't want to buy a whole CD from a band or musician I don't want to spend the money on - yet. It costs more, it's more cumbersome - but I like it, dammit, and nothing will stop me.
Not to mention that on that fateful day when the Internet just crashes and everyone in the world goes into a frenzy, at least I'll have my good ol' CDs to turn to.
Support albums. Support music. Support art.

Remember Richard Kelly's (Donnie Darko) much-bashed 2006/7 film Southland Tales, with Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Sean William Scott? Did you see it? Did you not like it? Or are you like me and haven't seen it at all?
Well, here's something you might not have known - Richard Kelly wrote three graphic novels as prequels to the film, and they came out not long before its release. I wonder if part of the problems (mainly the confusion over the plot) that many felt the film had stemmed from just not getting the "whole" story.
I've been waiting for quite a while now for today, June 30th, 2008. You know why? Because that's when the Southland Tales story arc begins taking place. It goes from TODAY, to July 4th, 2008. I'm going to read each book and see the movie on their corresponding days, in the ultimate geek fashion, to get the whole experience that is more than a once in a lifetime one, but one-time, period. Even if I end up disliking the books and/or the movie, this is an experience that nobody will ever be able to partake in again, EVER. Anniversaries be damned - this is something special and unique.
I'm quite pumped - and if I'm the only person in the world who is doing this, then I'm even more honored. This is just plain fun!

I'll be lazy and let you look Cyd Charisse up on your own for details, but I'll just say she was an actress and dancer from the 1950's, and starred in one of my most favorite movies, 'The Band Wagon,' with Fred Astaire (as well as another great one, 'Silk Stockings,' also with Astaire).
She was fun, funny, and not to mention arguably had two of the sexiest legs in Hollywood, well, ever, and was a welcome presence in many a film.
Rest in peace, Cyd Charisse. And thank you.

...is none other than SPEED RACER!!!
Nah, just kidding, LL. It was HAROLD AND K--
Okay, kidding about THAT too, but I did love that one. Seriously though...
The greatest movie ever, for me, is INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. It really just floored me. It was so wonderful (break down that word a moment - WONDER, as in wow, amazing, look around with jaw agape at the wonders, and ful--take a guess). It was so fun, funny, action-packed, thrilling, mind-boggling, beautiful, sweet, scary - everything I love about the movie-going experience, and have loved since I was little. This movie really put me back in my place about why I like movies so much, and why I spend so much money going to see them in theaters instead of waiting to rent them on Netflix or whatever it is the majority of people do nowadays. It made me cry - it was that good. It was just phenomenal. And it was good, too. And I won't even get started on the actors and actresses, the direction, the plot, or anything else - because I have other things to do - but all I'll say is that this movie just delivered in every way I could have possibly wanted. I could be content to live on a deserted island for the rest of eternity now, if need be. I really could.
Steven, Harrison, Cate, Shia, Karen, Ray, John, and John (as in Williams)...thank you, THANK you, THANK YOU for returning me to my bliss.
