As a San Franciscan, I have become accustom to using my feet as a mode of transportation. Therefore today, instead of exhausting myself with the maze of Berlin's U-bahns & S-bahns, I hit the road by foot. And with each step, I kept my eyes open.

Fourth Step

In nearly every yoga class, I teach my yoga students to shut off that little man in their heads - to remain focused.

That little man - the one that tells you:

1. You can do it tomorrow.
2. You won't get the job.
3. He / she doesn't like you/
4. Just one more beer.

Well after touring The Haven, Tom's Bar & Scheune Berlin & downing 4 Hefeweizens and 2 Becks with my host, Carsten Bauhaus, I concluded my birthday celebrations. And the following morning, I regained my focus.

First Step

After 9 years of consistently teaching weekly yoga classes, I have finally "let go"

For the next 12 days, I have removed myself from: the lives of my yoga students; my occupations; and my home. Instead of devoting my time to the responsibilities of life, I have embarked on a long overdue vacation.

Question: The plan?
Answer: To nurture "myself" with fun, relaxation & friends.

Typhoon in Manila

"I'm usually in your Tuesday night Yoga class (the filipina girl with short hair). Anyway, I'm writing because I remember you telling us once that if we ever had a cause or charity that we'd like to donate to, that you'd see what you could do about collecting donations."

Well, on Sunday, the Philippines was ravaged by Typhoon Ondoy, bringing down over a month's worth of rains in just 12 hours. This is the worst storm to have hit the Philippines in over 40 years. 100s have died and thousands are stranded on rooftops as the entire capitol region is under water.

I have several friends in the Philippines who have formed small relief groups, and they have been going out to communities to bring food, water, clothes, goods, and supplies to those in need. Some of them are even involved in rescue missions. If its not too much to ask, I would love to see what we could do about getting donations from folks in class tonight that would go directly to these relief efforts. - Dianne

Yoga - Berlin

In 1985ish, I resided in Berlin, Germany. At that time, I could be found nightly sitting in "The Jungle," "The Risiko," "Tom's Bar," "The Orangien Bar," Dominica Bar," "Cafe M," "Kreuzberg" or on the set of "Der Himmel Uber Berlin." I was a bartender. I was a socialite. I was having a fabulous time - yet, I was a drunk.

After three years of living in Kreuzberg (by the Berlin Wall), I returned to "The City by The Bay" - San Francisco. Upon my arrival to San Francisco, I realized that I had no game plan, no money, and not a friend in site ...... And after spending one homeless night sleeping on a park bench in Golden Gate Park, I began to contemplate a new path.

With my yoga students, I have repeatedly stressed developing the ability to become focused & not be moved by external forces. I encourage them to remove the influences of smell, touch, sound, vision and taste so that "one can see roses where there are roses & thorns where there are thorns. I invite them to develop a state of pratyahara.

And if you've attended one of my yoga classes you know that not only do I teach my students but also, I test my students. Regularly, I test my students on the sanskrit names of asanas. Yet now, I have created a test that will challenge even the focused of minds.

Sanskrit Word - Ardo Muhka Svanasana

Svadhyaya is about making time to know ourselves better. And through the practice of asanas - "we can do this." Therefore, I invite you to come join me as I drop in on the yoga classes of various San Francisco Bay Area yoga teachers.

Check out the line up, bring your mat, and let's see what we learn about ourselves with each interaction at:

Castro Farmer's Market

Today, after assisting a friend in their move to New York City, I walked towards Noe & Market Streets. And as I approached the corner, I wondered if today is the day of the Castro Street Fair. Yet knowing that October is two months away, I wondered "what the hell is going on?

As I walked closer, I saw some of the most amazing things: organic peaches, heirloom tomatoes, yellow raspberries, brioche, homemade ravioli, smoked salmon, phalaenopsis orchids, seasoned almonds, and every shade of peach - ALL CALIFORNIA GROWN!!!!
