FROM THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE // SECTION 5 // 10/09/09
It would seem that Nathan Xander is something of a hopeless romantic at heart. The troubadour picked up his first guitar at 19 years old after a girl he was dating suggested he learn to play John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery." Then, five years ago, Xander relocated to Chicago with his girlfriend, telling Pittsburgh City Paper: "She didn't want me to give chase, but I did anyway." Indeed, even while discussing the inspiration for some of his earliest tunes, the first word that pops up is "girls."
"It was real intense stuff," says Xander, 26, who was born and reared in Union City, a two-stoplight town in northwestPennsylvania. "There were some songs I didn't want to play in front of anybody because it was so (forthcoming)."
Most of Xander's earliest work also owes a heavy debt to his parents' record collection. Growing up in such a small town (population about 3,000), the singer/guitarist spent his formative years immersed in albums by the likes of Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and The Band. It wasn't until he got his driver's license that he began branching out beyond classic rock radio, making regular half-hour treks to a record store in Erie, Pa., that specialized in punk (where he discovered Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys and the Descendents, among others). From an even earlier age, Xander harbored a natural curiosity, eyeballing the black, wax discs and wondering how one went about creating a record of their own.
"I had a fascination with making things," says the singer. "It was like, 'These records are made by people. How do you do that?' "
It wasn't until the musician moved to Chicago and began performing in citywide open mics -- particularly a weekly event at Gallery Cabaret -- that he gained the confidence to record and release his first proper album: "Swiftly, Surely."
The album, replete with acoustic strumming and rusty blasts of harmonica, teems with bleak imagery and near biblical tragedy. "Just spent a week at my mother's house/Blacked out," he sings on "Darkness." These dark clouds soon materialized in Xander's own life. Shortly after the singer put together his first band, the group's drummer, Brendan Scanlon (perhaps best known as street artist Solve), was stabbed and killed after a late-night fight in June 2008. The events seem to have left a mark on Xander that he's still not ready to confront; he's written one yet-to-surface song about his fallen bandmate, and, when pushed, offers only: "It's not one I'm going to talk about."
Instead, the singer, partially inspired by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, has regrouped with four other musicians, billing themselves as Nathan Xander and Witchouse. "We want to have the energy as high as possible," says Xander, who sounds ready to leave grim subject matter in the past -- at least for the time being. "It's going to be a rock show with this band."

Every once in a while comes a great American songwriter. A songwriter whose imagery flows like poetry. A songwriter whose compositions delicately balance heart, introspection and faith, yet are still delivered with a raw rock sound. A songwriter whose music bravely echoes in the footsteps of his forbearers with its thought provoking and emotionally vulnerable lyrics, while never sounding too much like any well-known practitioner. A songwriter whose music is a sincere vehicle for personal expression and the canvas for his compelling, raspy tenor and keen lyrical sensibility. A songwriter who ever so humbly lays it all on the line. That songwriter has arrived...and his name is NATHAN XANDER.
“I consider myself an American songwriter. Sort of like Tom Petty” says Xander, who was first inspired to write his own material by the music of Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Gram Parsons amongst others. “THE FEAR is an honest record. That's what I’m drawn to in the music I listen to and it’s what I try to do when I'm writing. I wake up and fall asleep thinking about honest songs" he says. “I’m really a mix of every band that I like. It's not as if I'm trying to sound After The Gold Rush-era on this song, or have a Dylanesque harmonica on that song. It just filters in there.” And it’s not a problem that people liken his voice to Dylan’s...more a compliment. “When I started writing songs, it was Bob Dylan that really made me want to do it” says Xander. THE FEAR is a stunning album which at its core serves as both a reverent nod to Xander’s influences as well as a window into his own world of homespun individuality.

On The Fear, Nathan Xander takes a bold and reaching step to transform himself from a barroom/coffeehouse singer into a main stage commodity. The rich textures of his voice power through the chords, be it acoustic or electric, and conjure memories of smoke and sawdust. Although he lives and plays in one of the largest cities in the country, the fear is that he won’t be heard, he won’t be known, he won’t be loved. As its core, The Fear is roots rock and a big chunk of Americana. This album is honest and filled with heart, fear, and ultimately faith. What will draw new listeners to this collection is that faith, especially during these times. As we all begin to dig deeper, think harder about how we live and how we spend, the decision to purchase an album may be difficult. Yet, purely independent artists like Xander with stripped down and simple stories should be the first to get our support. Search for the self-released albums and spend what you can. Let them know that you are here for them and that they have nothing to fear. http://thedelimagazine.com/chicago/

| .. ........ .. Dylan made me do it: Nathan Xander | .. It's not a problem at all for Chicago singer-songwriter Nathan Xander that people keep likening his voice to Bob Dylan's. "When I started writing songs, it was Bob that really made me want to do it," he says. "But I'm really a mix of every band that I like. It's not as if I'm trying to sound like Neil Young on this song, or have a Dylan harmonica on that song. It just filters in there." After leaving his native Union City (a half-hour drive from Erie in Amish country), Xander spent five years in Pittsburgh, living in Mount Washington, Dormont and the South Side. "It's where I met my girlfriend, and I'm back there about eight times a year, hanging with her parents," he says. He eventually wound up following her to Chicago ("she didn't want me to give chase, but I did anyway"), and now works for a moving company while gigging with a klatch of like-minded folkies, including William Blackart and Adam Faucett. "There's this bar that does open mics -- it's the kind of place that stays open 'til 5 in the morning and has a grand piano, and they let us sit there and drink and play guitar to our hearts' content," Xander says. "Those guys asked me to do a show with them, and now we've become good friends, and we're informed by each other's music. Our stuff is in a similar vein, but still different." Xander's initial EP, Swiftly, Surely, was released by a Providence, R.I. label associated with a capsule album-review Web site called 75 or Less (the name refers to 75 words per review). His new CD The Fear -- which he'll debut this Fri., Feb. 6, at Club Café -- is self-released, although with frequent comparisons to Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia/Magnolia Electric), he may have an outside chance at convincing the Secretly Canadian label to come on board. "That wouldn't be too bad at all," he says. "There are some Chicago bands on that label." Meanwhile, Xander prowls the touring circuit restlessly, and even his own Web site, "Always Never Home," which reflects that semi-nomadic nature. "Originally, that was the title of a song on the EP, with the tone being that I was just not there mentally when I wrote it. But now I can see how it might refer to me being on the road a lot."
