Jetboy's Back In The Studio:

Day 1 - July 11th, 2009
by: Michael Butler

I got the privilege of staying home last night while Billy, Fernie and Doug loaded in the gear and got guitar and drum tones. The studio is called Function 8 and it is right in our neighborhood (the mission). Our engineer is Nathan Harlow. We've known him since the good old rock days in SF. He used to play bass in Maximillion's Motorcycle Club. They were huge in the clubs around 1990. I remember all the girls went nuts over this guy. Since then he's run monitors for about every big band that has come through here.

Today we laid down basic tracks for Perfectly Wrong, Dogs Gotta Roam, Going Down Above The Clouds, High Gear, Crank It Up and Losing Streak. Most tracks were done in no more than 2 takes. We've done these songs so many times now that we can play them in our sleep (I think I have a few nights, ha).

Everything is sounding great so far!

I can tell Billy is excited about this. He's like a little kid geeking out with his guitars and tones. He's tracking basics on a Gretch Jet Firebird, a Greco Les Paul and doing slide on a SG open tuned to A.

I'm playing my 70's Hagstrom Swede. My parts went well and I think I may be done!?

Make sure to follow us on Twitter for updates and photos by the minute @jetboyrocks

Tonight is the final rehearsal before Jetboy heads into the studio to record new songs for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Last week we played at Bar Sinister in Hollywood alongside a bunch of hot chicks and weirdos in a fashion show for the fine people at Lip Service. We fit right in since other than our vintage rock shirts and Fernie's thrift store finds, we were proudly wearing the clothes ourselves. We played some of the new songs at the gig and they were probably the most well received tunes in the set.

Here are some of the songs we will be recording:
Dogs Gotta Roam- fast riff filled and crunchy with tons of punk rock attitude.
Perfectly Wrong- sounds like something from Rocks era Aerosmith.
Going Down From Above The Clouds- Catchy rock anthem with AC/DC guitars and Stones Swagger
Crank It Up- Billy Rowe slide guitar. Rose Tattoo style tune
Losing Streak- catchy tune that sounds like classic Jetboy

We will be checking in all week with more updates.

Sincerely,
Michael Butler

Hey rock n rollers!!

As you all know we played M3 Festival in Columbia, MD about two weeks ago and had an absolute blast. Got to see some old friends play killer sets and even revealed a few new songs which you might've heard snippets of via YouTube videos. We had a great time and wanted to reach out and say THANK YOU to all of our fans (new and old) who came out to support the set. We also did a huge round of press that day, read our interview with Hard Rock Hideout here:

Much more to come soon!

Hey there rock n rollers!

We've got 3 days left on our recruiting contest and it's not too late to join the ranks. The mission, should you choose to accept it, is to encourage as many of your friends as possible to become friends w/ us here on myspace. Here's how it will work.

First, you will need to sign up for the contest. You can do so by leaving a blog comment with your first and last name (or at least the name you prefer to go by for this contest).

Second, start spread the word to all your friends to add our page. You can send bulletins with our various widgets to entice them in or maybe you prefer bribery. Whatever floats your boat as long as it brings them in.

Third, make sure that when your friends click "add to friends" that they write YOUR NAME (that you signed up for this contest with) in the little comment field that goes with friend requests. We'll keep the tally of how everyone is doing.

Finally, the person with the most referred friends at the end of the contest will win an autographed Hollywood Rocks box set signed by Jetboy!

Deadline: December 7th

So what are you waiting for? Sign up now and start spreading the word... here's two of our widgets you can use:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We thought we'd give you a little more insight into the most recent addition to the Jetboy family, our new drummer Doug! He wanted to share a few words with you guys, so here it goes...

What's happenin'?

So five years into my death metal band (making this 1985), an old friend from high school, Jenny, ask me if I'd like to check out her friends "glam" rock band - Jetboy. Glam? I mean, I'm all into David Bowie and all, but dudes with make-up? Needless to say, I went. As I walked into the Rock On Broadway back in 1985 the first thing I noticed was the crowd. It was packed with girls AND guys. I remember thinking – in between staring at Mick's blue Mohawk, Billy & Fern's massive hair, and Todd's face which I couldn't see (hair again) was that, they had some pretty fuckin' catchy songs. I was thinkin', hmmm maybe I should re-think my musical direction because I was sold!

After starting up a friendship with Mick 23 years ago we lost touch through the next 2 decades. But being a fan and supporter of the SF scene I did buy a ticket to see Jetboy at the Oakland Stadium, opening for Motley Crue, Whitesnake & Poison. I still remember walking through the parking lot with a bottle of Jim Beam and slightly jealous only to find out they had already played – minus Billy, due to a car accident. But being the fan I was - I sold my ticket in the parking lot and left within the next 5 minutes.

So 15 bands later, with locals like Danny West of Vain, Ron Yocom of The Seahags, Texacala Jones of Tex & The Horseheads, etc., 2 major label blown record deals, and 31 years worth of dreams – I myspace Billy 1 week after returning to the bay area. I asked if he was interested in forming a new band ( even though we hadn't spoken in over 20 years)….2 weeks later - I'm asked to join his cover band AND 2 months later I'm asked to join Jetboy!

So my life has come full circle back to where it all began and where I came from, with 4 other cool dudes with the same drive. It can be summed up in 2 words = FUCK yeah!

Sheesh, that was a doozy ! wasn't it ? If you were there.
And if you were not. Shame on you. let me tell you, the characters
were there and in full force. And I loved all of them ! It was fun
to connect with old faces, new faces and kooks. So the show was a good one for us. Our new manager Richard (Peter Grant) Riis was there ahead of us and scouted out the place so our arrival was nice and smooth from the parking lot to the stage.

Thanks Richard ! It was definately a chance to get that outdoor show vibe going before we hit Rocklahoma. You are going aren't you ? No ? well you are going to miss out. Lots of cools bands and old friends are going to be playing there. lets see....there is are old pals Kix from Baltimore MD. What a great band. They for sure were an early Jetboy influence. We had some good times back then ! Ha !

So going back to the gig on sunday, besides my internal guitar issues (guitar squealing like a stuck pig!) i was having, I would say that was one of the better shows yet. We did our version of "Its along way to the top" (if you wanna rock and roll ) WITH real Bagpipes provided by John (the green Goblin) Mahoney, who also serves as our publisist when he is not blowing those pipes. Thanks Johnny that was a riot. By the way if your not busy can you do it again at Rocklahoma with us? Yes i thought you would.

I think we thrive the best in front of big crowds. (well who doesn't silly boy) and since we are also playing the South Texas Rock Fest thingy which is another killer outdoor show with other great bands the day after Rocklahoma as well as 4 other Texas gigs it should make
for a fun 2 week mini tour. Anybody wanna come along ???????

Hmmmm Ok, so later I will give you the low down on our one song studio adventure we had on Saturday June 7th. As well as other bits and pieces. CIAO!! I just thought of something. If you wanna ask a question or two,go ahead when you leave a comment, or not.

One last thing, I am looking for a GOOD guitar tech that may wanna work with me on future local shows as well as any of the touring I know were gonna do in the future. It'll be fun. Its not just a job. Its an adventure. E-Mail here at our myspace page and put In the subject 'Tech'. Maybe even for the mini tour, though i think I have that covered. So spread the word.

OOH wanna say Hi to Liz and Debbie for driving from Fresno and all the while sporting their new Jetboy logo tattoo's !! Loved it !!!! you gals rock !!! Also Marcy from Sactramento was sporting her Killer new Jetboy logo tattoo with our signatures. Awesome. so I decided that im gonna put up and leave up photos of the girls tattoo's so you can all check em out. I like to share!

Ok, talk later and often.
