I went skiing today to try out my new but second-hand K2 Burnin' Love skis. No point pretending I'm anything but an intermediate, but I did get to try quite a few different skis last winter. Wow! I just had a great time, they are a really strong ski, good on all the surfaces I tried, turned really well, held the surface and edge very well. They also went really fast and steady in a straight line downhill. I got them at the Foire aux skis, they are ex-rental from Regis Sports, they sell off ex-rental equipment and last seasons lines at discounted prices during November and early December in Chantemerle. Great skis for an intermediate looking to progress and get rid of bad habits and they had obviously been well serviced during their rental life.

Question from Duncan:

Q. We are looking two double rooms in a nice hotel that we can ski in to and out from. One with a sauna or pool would be excellent.

A. It's not easy to satisfy all these criteria in Serre Che, if you want rustic and romantic the Chalet Hotel de Serre Ratier +33 (0) 4 92 22 29 76, is up the slopes , first level of the cable car, but has no swimming pool or sauna. It is absolutely charming, but I don't think there is any way up or down into the village after the lifts have closed. Club Med at Le Bez, La Salle les Alpes, is ski in ski out, check with them if they have a pool and sauna, I think all those inclusive style holiday centres will have, +33 (0) 4 92 24 62 00. A nice hotel in Chantemerle, with pool and sauna, but 5 mins from the lifts, and over the main road (there is a subway), would be the Hotel Plein Sud, very friendly, English spoken, upper price range however, +33 (0) 4 92 24 17 01.

This is not an exhaustive list, but these are places we know well, hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

I suppose to sum up, ski in ski out in Serre Che generally means the hotels are fairly remote. Do try the Office de Tourisme de Serre Chevalier, +33 (0) 4 92 24 98 98, they may be able to send you this year's brochure.
