Alan Smith has announced he is in negotiations to sign a new deal with Manchester United. Smith moved to Old Trafford from Leeds on a five-year deal in 2004 but, after breaking his leg in February 2006, he has struggled to regain his fitness this season. However, he started for England in the friendly with Brazil on Friday night and now has his sights set on winning a new contract and a place in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans. "I have a contract renegotiation coming up and, now I'm fit, I'm ready to fight for my future," he told the Daily Star Sunday. "I definitely want to stay at Old Trafford. "My agent has spoken to the club and hopefully that should be done in the next few weeks."

Alex Ferguson is calling for Alan Smith to be brought back into the England squad. The Manchester United striker has produced a string of impressive displays and scored in the 7-1 drubbing of Roma earlier this month. Boss Fergie said: "It is obviously Steve McClaren's decision but I would endorse it without question." Smith, 26, has 16 England caps but last played for his country in October 2005. He was then kept out for year with a broken leg and dislocated ankle. Fergie added: "He stuck at it and he enjoyed a cracking game against Roma. "He deserves his rewards. His enthusiasm for the game is infectious. You can see it on the training ground as well as the pitch."

I'LL never budge from the belief that Alan Smith should not have moved from Leeds United to Old Trafford. But it always has been obvious that the Manchester United striker is one of the most likeable, honest and down-to-earth professionals in the game. And after his long struggle to recover from injury, it was impossible not to feel a thrill of delight for him when he returned to the limelight in style against Roma last week. He showed he still deserves his place among the elite with his performance against the Italians and again against Watford in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final. He's the kind of player whose unflagging spirit will be invaluable to United as they head towards the climax of the season. For his attitude and his sheer bloody-mindedness, I hope a season that once seemed to hold only frustration yields everything he dreamed of. Oliver Holt, The Mirror

Sir Alex Ferguson admits Alan Smith could be the man to guide Manchester United through their current striker crisis. With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Louis Saha both sidelined and Henrik Larsson set to return to Sweden, the United boss is faced with a selection dilemma. But with Smith making his latest comeback from a broken leg and dislocated ankle as a late substitute in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League win over Lille, Ferguson is pinning his hopes that the former Leeds man can fill the void. "We are asking questions about how we rotate the squad and who should play up front. Alan Smith comes into that," said Ferguson. "As soon as we scored I knew it was effectively the end of the game, so it was a great opportunity to give Alan a share of it. "He will be involved again at Middlesbrough on Saturday and is certainly back in the frame." Smith made his name at Elland Road as a prolific striker, but has found goals hard to come by since his move to Old Trafford. Last season he scored once but has failed to find the net in any of his five appearances this season. Skysports

Darren Fletcher and Alan Smith joined former Blackburn boss Graeme Souness at the official opening of a school in Trafford earlier this month. Navigation Primary School in Altrincham has been the subject of a £3.3million redevelopment and headmaster Steve Busby invited local residents Darren, Alan and Graeme along to mark the occasion. After signing autographs for excited pupils, the United pair discussed life at Old Trafford and their favourite subjects at school. Busby hailed the opening and thanked the Reds' duo for making the visit. "All the children were delighted to see the players," he said. "We are all very excited about the new school and Darren and Alan's presence made it extra special for everyone."
