D-Rail keep some damn fine company. Since their 2001 inception the band have kicked and screamed on stages alongside names like Norma Jean, Cancer Bats and Bane and more recently have made friends with fellow UK road-dogs Gallows and The Plight. And from the sound of the band's new mini-album you can bet they fit right in with everyone too. Hell, bloodthirsty opener 'I Am A Timebomb' is exactly the sort of thing that would emerge if all the above decided to have an impromptu backstage jam in a dingy club somewhere.
That's not to say that the Leeds quartet are content to crib riffs from their more famous friends or copy sounds though. Sure 'Broken Bones' combines the oppressive darkness of Will Haven with the party vibe of latter-day Every Time I Die but 'Engine Running' is a spidery, individual slice of heart-in-mouth passion and every one of the nine tracks here bubbles with a gritty rage that will sound great live. The sort of raucous, simple but effective punk rock that only bands that have spent most of their time on tour can write so well.
D-Rail's obvious skill, knack for an angry hook, and travel-hardened wrath can't disguise the budget production here, sometimes it sounds like frontman Lee recorded his admittedly raw and earnest vocals in a cupboard and there's no denying that the whole of 'Like A Running Riot' would benefit from a fatter sound, but from start to finish the fury, fire and intent is clear enough for anyone to hear. Great stuff.
