Plenty of modern bands seem to be pretending the last two decades never happened, but few do it with the swaggering steez of Austin’s Scorpion Child. The group’s classic-rock riffage is as shopworn as the perfect vintage buckskin jacket—so genuine it seems like the members were squeezed out of wombs scrawled with Physical Graffiti—and built on big Bonzo beats and the bare-chested, ball-clenching wails of singer Aryn Schwartz. Seattle’s Emeralds tokes from a similar stash of ’70s strut-rock and vintage psych, but its vaguely metallic coughs are far harsher—like if Alice In Chains had tried a few Blue Cheer covers. Black Bone Child and Bankrupt And The Borrowers sing the down-and-dirty/recession blues, respectively, while The Astronaut Suit sets the stage with Southern-rock-tinged shoegaze.

-On Tuesday, March 11 we went out for the evening to see a few bands--none we'd ever heard of, but we were open to seeing what was on the venue for a South by Southwest (SXSW) party at The Beauty Bar on 7th Street in downtown Austin. Upon arrival, the inside stage was between sets so a DJ was spinning a very cool mix of tunes. (I guess I don't get out much in the club scene because I'd never heard Dolly Parton's hit "9 to 5" mixed with a beat as a dance tune, but it was pretty cool to hear that song and reminisce about the movie.) When the band was ready and came on stage, they pretty much knocked our socks off. They played this music that I'd never thought I'd own up to liking--something like a blend of the Black Crowes, Jim Morrison, Led Zeppelin, and Blue Oyster Cult--and seemingly straight out of a time warp from the 70's. The guys all had Jesus hair and tight 70's pearl snap shirts and they rocked it out like they owned the hippie rock movement. The band, Scorpion Child, is one I'd definitely go see again--possibly even with my parents (Gasp!). For some reason, I think they'd dig their classic rock vibe, as long as they're wearing ear plugs to tune down the volume.
This is the greatest thing about South by Southwest... Heading out for the evening with an open mind and stumbling upon something super sweet and memorable in your own backyard--a band that you never knew existing, but have to definitely go see again. I have Scorpion Child on my "must see" list for 2008.

-Steaming on through the weekend, Free Week at Emo's continues Monday night with a mostly local smattering of acts at the lounge and inside stages. Kicking off the set inside is Scorpion Child, a classic rock outfit with a vocalist who could be Robert Plant's distant nephew. The UK's twangy popsters Big Black Smoke will follow in early Beatles style.

Scorpion Child rocks like 1975, like somebody scrawled Physical Graffiti all over southern rock. The local quintet reworks killer bluesy riffs in the unmistakable vein of Zeppelin, while frontman Aryn thrashes his long locks like Robert Plant and moans both soulful and bruising. The group is working on their debut album, which will be out later this year, but catch them live for the real, incomparable Scorpion experience. Scorpion Child will be playing this Saturday, May 17 at Red 7 with an insane lineup that includes Scott Biram and Nashville Pussy.

-Hey all you….Go see Scorpion Child. They are so bad ass. They get better every time i see them and they kick the shit out of other bands they play with. It seems that they constantly raise the bar of intensity just like ATDI did for 90's angular math punk Scorpion Child does for southern fury-rock revival. They are for fans of MC5 and Led Zep. Dude can sing his ass off and him and the bassist move like crazy on stage. They pu on a hell of a show. I've seen Ume play a few times too and that girl is super talented on guitar. Anyways go to this show. Posted 2 months ago. ( permalink )

1-7-08: Last night was 70's night inside at Emo's. Scorpion Child rocked out tunes that could have come straight out of dazed and confused. Then only thing that made me uncomfortable were outfits the massive mustaches (we still all know these are only ironically cool, right?). Big Black Smoke was in the same vain but to a lesser degree. comment 1: I witnessed first hand and would have to say, Holy Shit! The Scorpion Child band stole the night hands down. Ridiculous outfits yes, but very fitting to anyone into Bowie or Queen circa the amazing mustache era. Those were some sweet dudes. Very friendly southern gentleman like. As for the music, i'm floored. I wasn't expecting all that energy. Singer was wayyyy into the music and involved everyone drawing them in to the energy. He had the action of Iggy Pop with a Freddie Mercury caliber voice (which you don't hear often these days). My wife was very impressed. Bassist was amazing. wow, despite his amp blowing up. Guitars and drums were legendary. Great performance in my oppinion. They still manage a pretty original take on a classic 70's sound! When do they play again? five big stars

I met a girl on Friday night who was flipping out during the show. She was telling my girl and i, about all of the different occasions on which she's seen these bands, and comparing/contrasting. We came to a mutual agreement that this show was one of the best we've seen this year. Pj and The Bear, seemed a bit gimmicky, but i was into it with the bear costume, and the wild man singer, who turns out is a really nice dude. A few Nice Things have a 60's psyche/blues rock with a one trick pony frontman who jumps up and down and off time claps through the set, making the songs all blend together with similar riffs throughout. He has an interesting voice. They were good with fashion sense of Stones/Cinderella circa '91. see em Lions were too Ratm/Fu Manchu for my liking. i love that sound and they are entertaining, but are lacking something in songwriting. Nice guys i guess, but there live show is more moving than their record.Good electric rock energy! . Nice in the riff-rock dept. Scorpion Child actually blew Myself and girlfriend away. Where did they come from? How long have i not known about them as a local band? Sounds of Blue Cheer but new and different. Great weird style. They hands down stole the show. Shredding Allman Bros looking guitar player, great tight rhythm section (Bonham & Jones),and a very talented singer/frontman that knows how to move and work the crowd ie Daltrey/Iggy Pop with moves, and soul like a young James brown and the voice of a male Janis Joplin.WOW! Bassist gotz the freakout leg moves like Omar Rodriguez. Drummer is very unique and skilled. i think he's played locally before. They really pull off their look amazingly well without trying too hard (no offense to AFNT) This band should've been in place of Lions. They need bigger Amps for that sound. I wanted to meet them and so did my gf (haha). We congratulated the singer for making the night and he was very warm and receptive. Awesome band! Serious mustache's. 5 stars

Submitted by Brian (not verified) on Sat, 2008-05-17 18:43. dipshit steps forward to recycle more bullshit about recycled bullshit. Focus on the psyche-rock revivalists like Black Angels. Well there's only 800,000 of those. I know not one single band like this one, but it's only jealousy that would compel you to remark. Yo if you're not getting laid after a sweaty night of beauty bar skank hunting to ELO and Rianna on repeat (tito's n tonic in hand) competing at your own hipster fare,i can understand being distraught. You should move somewhere
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 2008-05-14 16:33. Yay, more Beauty Bar hipsters playing recycled culture bullshit. You know, typical unchallenging non-sense that most Austin kids like.
reply Submitted by Justin (not verified) on Wed, 2008-05-14 19:59. It must be terrible being you. All this music to hate, and so little time to do it. Quit yer bitchin' and make something better then.
reply Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 2008-05-27 19:49. 1) Yes, Black Angels are shit, most agree. 2) You know of not one band that sounds like Scorpian Child because....you've been under a rock for the past five years. 3. I'll pass on the herpes, thanks. Most of the girls at Beauty Bar are just STD baths. 4. You should move back to Williamsburg. 5. If you don't like it that your band gets made fun of then you probably should do something else if your ego is that fragile.
reply Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 2008-06-05 07:32. They really genuinely rock the fuck out. Every show i've seen has been unique and intense. Recycled culture what? Who is this assfuck? Finally someone is bringing some early stoner rock influence back. It is a breathe of fresh air. This sound was what spawned early metal like Deep fucking Purple. If people wanna talk shit, they are serious haters who don't have the balls or talent to bring it like The Scorpion Child. Some of the nicest rockers i have met. i can't tell if the last comment discussing STD baths was pro or anti-scorp child. It could be taken either way

DATELINE NBC: JANUARY 24,2008 Last Thursday night George and Willamena Odiobicho received the shock of their lives, when, according to local police reports, they were awakened at about 2:15 a.m. by what sounded like a metallic scraping noise on their concrete patio. Mr. Odiobicho reportedly grabbed a BB gun from his den and a flashlight, and quietly approached the french doors leading to the backyard of their posh Northwest Austin residence. He nearly lost control when he saw that a giant scorpion was resting on his patio. The Odiobichos immediately fled to their Hummer with their only child, Frank, and the family pet, a miniature Doberman. They called authorities from their cell phone. Upon arrival, Austin authorities were amazed at what they found. The giant scorpion in question was nearly four feet long, with huge pincers and a two foot long tail with a prominent stinger at the end. Having arrived unprepared to deal with such an unusual find, Austin police arranged for some experts to come to the site while they attempted to secure the yard. The Central Texas Humane Society, Texas Game and Fish and the Attorney General's Office all agree that they had never seen such a creature in central Texas before. A local exterminator was called to the scene, but quickly left, saying, "That's one helluva bug. I ain't goin' near it...." The giant scorpion is believed to be of a rare Malaysian variety that has never before been seen in the desert Southwest. Researchers from UT, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona confirm that the giant scorpion is, indeed, highly venomous, and, if given the opportunity, could kill any human with one sting. They note, however, that because of the size of the scorpion's pincers, anyone who gets in the giant scorpion's way will more likely be crushed to death before it even stings. The Odiobichos are living at a motel in Reno while authorities sort out their options. "We never thought that something like this could happen in our neighborhood." said Mrs. Odiobicho. Then she added, "Are our children safe anywhere anymore?" Governor Perry held a press conference today and delivered some more bad news about the giant scorpion. "We believe that this giant scorpion escaped from an airplane cargo bay while in transit from Malaysia to a research laboratory near Marble Falls. What we didn't know until this morning," continued the Governor, "is that there were two giant scorpions. We just don't know the whereabouts of the other one yet. I assure you that every available person is looking for the missing giant scorpion." Meanwhile, residents of Austin and San Antonio are urged to stay indoors and keep pets and small children away from windows. Giant scorpions are nocturnal, but that doesn't mean they are comatose during the day. They can be hard to see, even though they are nearly the size of a small Volkswagon. They are hunters and will hide and wait for their prey. Do not attempt to battle the creature on your own. If you hear scraping or knocking during the night do not answer the door. Striking it with a baseball bat, spraying it with Raid, or aiming a bow and arrow at it, is more likely to annoy it than harm it. If you happen to have a harpoon, that might be an option, but authorities are asking that residents with harpoons use them only if absolutely necessary--they'd like to try to take the giant scorpion alive if possible. Authorities at the Austin Nature & Science Center have offered to build a habitat for the giant scorpion that has been found. There are some challenges to overcome, like where they will get the giant crickets to feed them. "We figure those crickets will have to be about as big as housecats to keep that scorpion fed," said the Exhibit Director for the museum. Another issue that officials are not discussing is this--if we find the other giant scorpion, do we really want the two of them breeding? What would we have as a result of their mating?
