Hello -
Beretta76 will not be appearing at Johnny Brendas on Monday April 20th due to a sudden and unexpected death in a band member's family. However, we still urge you to get out and see our good friends The Donuts and of course, legendary guitarist Richard Lloyd.
We'll see you next time.

Hi folks -
We're psyched to let you know we'll be sharing a bill with the incomparable Richard Lloyd and The Sufi-Monkey Trio on Monday April 20th (*cough*) at Johnny Brenda's along with our friends The Donuts. Richard Lloyd was an original member of Television, has played with Matthew Sweet and Rocket From The Tombs and has also released several solo records. The Sufi-Monkey Trio currently consists of Richard Lloyd on vocals and guitar and harmonica, Billy Ficca from Television on drums, and Keith Harshtel on bass. This should be a great show - don't sleep on it!

Hey kids -
The South Philadelphia Review featured us in an article just this past week. The story follows the link. 19148 REP-RAH-ZENT!

The Edge
By Lex C. March 6, 2008
DJ/promoter/karaoke fiend Sara Sherr’s comments in Feb. 28’s "Sugar Town, spice and everything nice" triggered a thought: Is South Philly’s live-music scene really lagging?
Or, maybe it’s like much of the arts scene over here: simply hiding — a quiet giant swimming under the surface.
When it comes to alternative tunes, it’s all about being underground. Sometimes, the search is half the fun and an unexpected show is the best. So, while Fishtown venues and West Philly stages are getting all the coverage, a little bit of digging reveals rehearsals in living rooms, podcasts coming out of basements, recording studios attached to apartments — and plenty of musicians creating and performing in this area.
Case in point: alt-rock group Beretta76 has been playing gigs up and down the East Coast, opening for big names like The Fratellis, Earl Greyhound and The Fleshtones, for more than five years. Usually, compared to The Pretenders and Ramones, the local band released a self-produced album in 2006. Sweeping up accolades from local reviewers and garage-rock aficionados, the band’s raw, hard-edge sound thickly laden with seductive lyrics about one-hour stands, temptation and beauty queens also won it a Jane Magazine demo contest.
Quietly — but successfully — this foursome has used South Philly as home base since forming in ’02. And, like many of the musicians in the area, they keep a low profile, practicing above a garage at 16th and McKean streets that used to be a Mummers’ rehearsal room.
So, if places like Fishtown are supposedly where it’s hot musically, why does this band stay put?
"It’s like an old-school neighborhood," singer-guitarist Pete Rydberg, who lived in Bella Vista with lead vocalist Camille Escobedo for nine years before they moved to Ninth and Pierce streets in ’04, said. "It’s what I would imagine what parts of Brooklyn were like long time ago." With parents who grew up in the New York borough, Rydberg’s childhood was peppered with stories of a place that didn’t seem to exist anymore — until he found South Philly. "I don’t even know how to describe it," he continued. "It’s really become kind of like more of a destination place. But I’ve always just thought of it as a great neighborhood."
With the band’s new bassist Ben Brower, a former Passyunk Avenue resident ("right around the corner from Pat’s"), and drummer Rob Giglio previously living at 13th and Federal streets, all Beretta76 members have been part of the South Philly club. But in the coming months, the entire crew will spend a lot of time here working on their next record, with hopes of releasing it by the end of the year.
The group isn’t alone in its desire to create music on this side of town. Locally based band Ken co-headlined a concert at the Tritone last week with Beretta76, and, for awhile, Diner at the Plaza, Front Street and Snyder Avenue, served as an unlikely live-show venue during a few whiskey nights (though these have been put on hold for now). Come spring, if it’s anything like last year, the empty lot at 12th and Carpenter streets will serve as a makeshift stage for Art@Sophi Fridays, among other events.
Live concerts in South Philly might be hard to come by, but in some ways it makes them that much more special.

It's a showdown! City Paper and Y-Rock/WXPN have squared off, pitting their favorite bands against each other in a battle royale. We've been thrown into the ring to compete against such Philadelphia heavyweights as the A-Sides, Paint it Black, The Teeth, Spinto Band, YMD, Adam Arcuragi, and Zolof the Rock 'n' Roll Destroyer. Y-Rock has selected Man Man, Dr. Dog, The Swimmers, Capitol Years, The Loved Ones, Illinois, Jotto and Bitter Bitter Weeks. The winning band from the City Paper 8 will face off against the winning band from the Y-Rock 8 next week. Beginning March 12th, the winning bands from each side will battle to be the Y-Rock Vs. City Paper Philly Rock Shootout Champions. We've been told the victor will win spots on two music festivals this summer. You can read Pat Rapa's article about the whole deal here. Needless to say, we feel a little bit like Rocky going up against Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago all at the same time. So take it upon yourself to play Adrian...or Paulie...or Mickey....and help us out in our corner and vote for us. Sooooooo.....go to: http://www.citypaper.net/surveys/take/?sid=53and vote!

Hi folks -
To all of you that braved a cold February night and still waited it out until 1:30am to hear us play, we offer you our sincerest thanks. If you bailed out early or didn't even come out, here's what happened:

Beretta 76, Feb. 23, Tritone
Something's not going 100% according to plan if your headliner doesn't take the stage until 1:30, but hell yes when Beretta 76 finally took the stage at Sugar Town on Saturday it was exactly the sure shot of caffeine I needed. Braving an ornery microphone that flirted with feedback and bit back with occasional electric shocks, Camille Escobedo belted out some hellacious punk energy herself. You know, it's funny: between songs, she sounds like she's losing her voice, always, but when she sings it's like the strongest thing on earth. Great show.
Stay tuned to CP for a weird March Madnessy thing we're doing called City Paper vs. Y-Rock Philly Rock Shootout or something like that. I don't wanna give it all away now, but there was a draft and we picked Beretta 76. This will make more sense later. _____________________________________
We're headed back into the studio to start on the follow-up to Black Beauty. Look for new songs soon....

See what our friends at Play Philly have to say. June 30th finds us participating in the annual Welcome, America! 4th of July celebration at Independence Mall on the Taste Of Philadelphia stage. Come on out and show everyone your Spirit Of '76! July 6th brings us to a different kind of fireworks display when we open for maximalist garage rockers The Mooney Suzuki at The Khyber. Finally, we're proud to announce we're playing the WXPN XPonential Music Festival on Friday July 20th. It's going to be an amazing four days of music and we're psyched to be a part of it. Classic Rock UK Magazine May 2007
There really is nothing better on this dumb planet than a rock n' roll band with a strutting frontfox who can peel off sleazy guitar riffs while belting out cheap come-ons and biting put-downs in a Joan Jett drawl. Beretta76 have exactly that in Camillie Escobedo. Beretta76 totally rock. 7 out of 10. --Sleazegrinder
