D!ce article - Oh so hot right now

Don't let the fierce-looking, black lipstick-wearing girl on their album cover fool you. D!ce isn't some metal band thrashing around their long hair and shredding oddly-shaped guitars. Instead, think of 90s rock revolutionaries like NOFX. In fact, think of any ska band, sans the brass instrumentals. Or the Irish insanity of Dropkick Murphys mixed with the uninhabited, and sometimes crude, attitude of Blink 182. If you want an idea of what D!ce is all about, just listen to their influences, like punk-rock legends Pennywise and Green Day.

Coming from a musical epicenter such as Long Island, rising above a sea of struggling musicians could not have been a cake walk for the members of D!ce. Against all odds, though, vocalist Beau Taylor, bassist Rocky Pallatto, guitarist Doug Sawyer and drummer Dan Lysogorski have gotten some recognition for their refreshing old-school sound. Just over a year ago, the band won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the Rock category. Not a bad accomplishment for a foursome who self-produced their newest album, which will be available on iTunes April 15.

Even with the recognition, the guys don't seem to be taking themselves too seriously. The refrain to the track "Piss and Vomit" portrays each member in a very humorous light: "Our bass player's gay [No I'm not] and our guitar player's fat [and bald] and our drummer's got some problems, but I won't get into that."

The songs stray from the pervasive depressing music being produced nowadays, both lyrically and musically. Fans can sing along at the top of their lungs to lyrics that croon about good times, not broken hearts and dreams. And if you're not much for straining your vocal chords, feel free to dance and jump around to a punk-rock fiesta, complete with traditional high-energy guitar, an overload of double kick drum, and infectious, relatable lyrics.

Luckily for fans of 90s punk, Taylor & Co certainly have the ability to transpose the high-energy of their CD to their live shows. Playing at famous venues like the Canal Room in New York City, the boys may not dress in the stereotypical punk attire of the last decade, but who cared for all that neon hair and mismatched clothing anyway? T-shirts and jeans suit these guys just fine.
