Please forward & post to prison & mental health advocates:> Prisons as the new mental asylums: the example of Michigan By E. Galen, July 102007Comments posted at the story link, too. The above activist web site has millions of members ....... Also see the report :> "Are they dysfunctional homeless or toxic victims" ? http://www.angelfire.com/hi/soberskidrow/dfhtv.html The above story is titled from a quote from Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco speaking at a "Homeless Connect" meeting.
Ironically enough, San Francisco has been chasing the homeless out of their city (see the"A Dream Denied"report). The homeless then flee to neighboring communities. Of whom then pass similar laws to harass the homeless, as reported by the Press Democrat newspaper (htm45). The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper ran a story that stated, "general assistance rolls for the homeless have been slashed by 73 percent -..." (hrm60) forcing other cities to pass laws against homelessness to divert the onslaught of those fleeing places like San Francisco and Sonoma County (htm45). You might ask yourself if maybe they are "mentally ill, toxic victims that might have committed a crime because they are toxic" ? At a hearing this morning of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, investigators released internal e-mails indicating that FEMA lawyers rejected environmental testing out of fear that the agency would then become legally liable if health problems emerged among as many as 120,000 families displaced by Hurricane Katrina who lived in trailers. FEMA's Office of General Counsel "has advised that we do not do testing," because this "would imply FEMA's ownership of this issue," wrote a FEMA logistics specialist on June 16, 2006, three months after news reports surfaced about the possible effects of the invisible cancer-causing compound and one month after the agency was sued. Please see the attached forwarded LA Times news paper story that declares the vast majority of breast cancers are due to toxic environmental exposures. And that genetics play a much smaller role than previously thought. My thoughts are that the issue of genetics in various diseases is still "misconstrued". There is a lot of reference material with regard to the common sources of toxic chemical exposures, on this blog, too. One interview with the EPA says over 70% of exposures are from indoor air polution in our own homes. But another article (reference 144 in a prior blog) interviews a CDC researcher that say's food is the main source of exposure. A book titled "Diet For A New America" won a Pulitzer Prize and exposed dairy products and meat as being major sources of pesticide exposures. Many "Environmental Doctors agree with food being the number one source of exposure. Another book titled, "Fateful Harvest" exposes toxic chemicals being disposed of in fertilizer and and used with even "organic food". (Baby Green Organic lettuce had the highest levels of perchlorate of all the foods tested). In prior blogs, I give reference material on medical X-rays increasing the toxicity of toxic chemicals and that X-rays are associated with over 70% of the cases of breast cancer.
I have added some information to be aware of the genetic testing for the ability to detoxify, such
as whar is called APOe.

Common chemicals are linked to breast cancerOf the 216 compounds, many in the air, food or everyday items. By, Marla Cone, , Times Staff Writer May 14, 2007 ..>..>..>..> ..>| Related Stories | | - | Chemical carcinogens | | - | Despite cancer, many keep careers healthy | ..> The reports are at http://www.silentspring.org/sciencereview .
More than 200 chemicals — many found in urban air and everyday consumer products — cause breast cancer in animal tests, according to a compilation of scientific reports published today. Writing in a publication of the American Cancer Society, researchers concluded that reducing exposure to the compounds could prevent many women from developing the disease. The research team from five institutions analyzed a growing body of evidence linking environmental contaminants to breast cancer, the leading killer of U.S. women in their late 30s to early 50s. Experts say that family history and genes are responsible for a small percentage of breast cancer cases but that environmental or lifestyle factors such as diet are probably involved in the vast majority. "Overall, exposure to mammary gland carcinogens is widespread," the researchers wrote in a special supplement to the journal Cancer. "These compounds are widely detected in human tissues and in environments, such as homes, where women spend time." The scientists said data were too incomplete to estimate how many breast cancer cases might be linked to chemical exposures. But because the disease is so common and the chemicals so widespread, "the public health impacts of reducing exposures would be profound even if the true relative risks are modest," they wrote. "If even a small percentage is due to preventable environmental factors, modifying these factors would spare thousands of women." The three reports and a commentary were compiled by researchers from the Silent Spring Institute, http://www.silentspring.org/ a women's environmental health organization in Newton, Mass.; Harvard's Medical School and School of Public Health in Boston; the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.; and USC's Keck School of Medicine. Silent Spring Institute Executive Director Julia Brody led the team.
In response to the findings, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer prevention group that funded the work, pledged an additional $5 million for developing research tools to root out environmental causes.
Reviewing hundreds of existing studies and databases, the team produced what it called "the most comprehensive compilation to date of chemicals identified as mammary carcinogens." No new chemical testing was conducted for the reports.
The researchers named 216 chemicals that induce breast tumors in animals. Of those, people are highly exposed to 97, including industrial solvents, pesticides, dyes, gasoline and diesel exhaust compounds, cosmetics ingredients, hormones, pharmaceuticals, radiation, and a chemical in chlorinated drinking water.
"Almost all of the chemicals were mutagenic, and most caused tumors in multiple organs and species; these characteristics are generally thought to indicate likely carcinogenicity in humans, even at lower exposure levels," they reported.
For many of the compounds, the federal government has not used animal breast cancer data when conducting human risk assessments, which are the first step toward regulating chemicals or in setting occupational standards to protect workers. Companies are not required to screen women who work with the chemicals for breast cancer.
"Regulators have not paid much attention to potential mammary carcinogens," the researchers wrote.
Toxicologists say that other mammals, such as rats and mice, often develop the same tumors as humans do, and that animal tests are efficient means of testing the effects of chemicals. Environmental regulators, however, often want conclusive human data before taking action.
Animal studies generally use high doses of a substance to simulate a lifetime of exposure, and then the results are extrapolated to the lower levels that people are exposed to.
Ana Soto, a Tufts University professor of cell biology who specializes in cellular origins of cancer and effects of hormone-disrupting contaminants, said there probably was a link between breast cancer and exposures to chemicals in the environment, particularly early in life.
"I cannot say I'm convinced, but what I can say is that it's a very likely, very plausible hypothesis," said Soto, who did not participate in the new research. "More and more, cancer looks like an environmental disease."
Twenty-nine of the chemicals are produced in volumes exceeding 1 million pounds annually in the United States.
Seventy-three are present in consumer products or are food contaminants — 1,4-dioxane in shampoos, for example, or acrylamide in French fries. Thirty-five are common air pollutants, 25 are in workplaces where at least 5,000 women are employed, and 10 are food additives, according to the reports.
There are probably many more than 216, the research team said, because only about 1,000 of the 80,000 chemicals registered for use in the United States have been tested on animals to see whether they induce cancerous tumors or mutate DNA. Such tests cost $2 million each.
Because epidemiological studies are difficult to conduct and full of uncertainties, human data are "still relatively sparse," the researchers wrote. Only 152 studies worldwide have examined whether women exposed to contaminants are more likely to have breast cancer — compared with nearly 1,500 that have explored the links between diet and the disease — and most of the 216 carcinogens were not included.
"Despite this large remaining gap, research in the last five years has strengthened the human evidence that environmental pollutants play a role in breast cancer risk," the researchers wrote. They said the existing studies suggested "substantial public health impact."
Human evidence is particularly strong for PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls — compounds widely used in the 1940s to late 1970s that still contaminate fish and other foods — and for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, found in diesel and gasoline exhaust.
Solvents in dry cleaning, aircraft maintenance and other jobs also may increase breast cancer risk.
Some of the chemicals named as breast carcinogens already are regulated to protect public health, but some, particularly those in consumer products, are not.
The scientists conducted the review hoping to lay the groundwork for new human studies, as well as to persuade regulators to use existing animal data to strengthen regulations and require more testing of chemicals.
"Animal models are the primary means of understanding and anticipating effects of chemicals in humans," they wrote. "All known human carcinogens … are also carcinogenic in animals."
Emerging evidence suggests that the roots of breast cancer are in infancy or the womb. More animal and human research should focus on such early exposure, said Patricia Hunt, a Washington State University School of Molecular Biosciences professor.
But Hunt and Soto urged society not to wait for scientific proof to reduce exposure to the chemicals.
"When you look at their list of chemicals, we are exposed to all of it," Soto said. "We know humans are exposed to mixtures, and studying mixtures is very difficult. We will never have the whole picture, and it will take many, many years to collect epidemiological evidence, so we should take some preventive measures now."
Although virtually all women are exposed to the chemicals, some may be more susceptible because of differing metabolism or ability to repair DNA.
Breast cancer is probably triggered by an interaction of multiple environmental and genetic factors.
Experts have long suspected diet plays a role. But the new research found "no association that is consistent, strong and statistically significant" for any particular foods raising or reducing breast cancer risk. There is substantial evidence, however, that regularly consuming alcohol, being obese and being sedentary increase risk.
About 178,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year in the United States.
The reports are at http://www.silentspring.org/sciencereview .

While major pollution-control efforts have focused on industry and automobiles, three-quarters of the typical American's exposure to toxic chemicals occurs indoors, according to a federal Environmental Protection Agency scientist. And because much of the indoor exposure results from everyday tasks, done at home and ``close to your nose,'' Americans can take some simple steps to minimize their exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, says Lance Wallace, who has been sampling indoor pollution in homes across the country for the past decade. ``We've found that consumer products and personal activities are the major sources of exposure,'' Wallace told a recent meeting of the American Lung Association in Annapolis. ``The traditional (toxic) sites that EPA has worried about were not very important in exposure.'' ____________________________________ Full text of article: Copyright Seattle Times Oct 2, 1989 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The foam pillow you sleep on could be hazardous to your health. So could a freshly dry-cleaned suit, a morning shower and the air freshener that scents the room. ``The traditional (toxic) sites that EPA has worried about were not very important in exposure.'' Wallace doesn't argue that efforts to clean up outdoor air are pointless. Air pollutants such as ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can damage the environment and pose a direct threat to the health of people with lung diseases such as asthma and emphysema. But, while most of the toxic emissions occur outdoors, most of the actual exposure of Americans to toxic chemicals occurs inside, he said. ``The average American spends only 4 percent of his time outdoors,'' Wallace said. ``We don't spend much time on the tops of buildings or in intersections where pollution measurements are taken.'' Wallace and his EPA colleagues found, for example, that while automobiles produce 82 percent of toxic emissions, they result in just 18 percent of humans' exposure to toxic chemicals. Industry produces 14 percent of emissions, but just 3 percent of exposures. On the other hand, cigarettes account for 0.1 percent of toxic emissions in the country but produce 39 percent of humans' exposure to toxic chemicals. The exposure to toxic chemicals from smoking by others exceeds that from industrial pollutants, Wallace said. Wallace began his studies 10 years ago in two areas of the country with the worst reputations for air pollution - Los Angeles and northern New Jersey. The EPA team sampled air inside and outside homes, then tested the breath of residents to determine what chemicals they had been exposed to. ``All 11 chemicals that we looked at were at much higher exposures - two to five times higher - in homes as outdoors,'' he said. ``And remember, this was outdoors in New Jersey.'' The work since has been expanded to more than a dozen cities across the country. ``In every city, in every season, the indoor exposures are greater than outdoor sources,'' Wallace said. ``This explains why no one ever steps inside for a breath of fresh air,'' he said. Among the chemicals of concern were: -- Benzene, known to cause leukemia in humans, was traced to cigarette smoking, automobile travel, pumping gas and vapors from attached garages. ``Smokers had a good deal more of everything in their breath,'' Wallace said. -- Para-dichlorobenzene, linked to cancer in animals, is present in air fresheners, moth crystals and restroom disinfectants. High levels can persist for years in some homes. -- Chloroform, also an animal carcinogen, is released from water during hot showers and clothes- and dish-washing. ``Half the chloroform comes out before the water hits the tub, and 10 minutes in the shower can expose the rest of the family to chloroform for up to two hours,'' he said, recommending that bathrooms be properly vented to reduce exposure. -- Tetrachloroethylene, another animal carcinogen, is now the chemical of choice for dry cleaning, replacing the now-banned carbon tetrachloride. Newly dry-cleaned clothes can emit tetrachloroethylene for seven to 10 days. ``In our tests, 37 people who had gone to the dry cleaners had twice the amount of tetracholoroethlylene in their breath,'' Wallace said. Hanging dry-cleaned clothes outside for a day ``will save 20-30 percent of the exposure,'' he said. Many sources of indoor pollution can be removed or controlled, and there are other steps homeowners can take to reduce exposure. NASA scientists said this week that several varieties of common house plants remove common pollutants from the air: Philodendrons, spider plants and golden pothos take out formaldehyde; flowering plants such as gerbera daisies and chrysanthemums remove benzene; bamboo palms, peace lilies, ficus, mass cane, mother-in-law's tongue, English ivy and Chinese evergreen also can help with indoor pollution. Wallace said equipment such as electrostatic precipitators and negative ion generators are helpful in removing some pollutants, but tend to be expensive and only partially effective. _____________ Important notes and reference links: Using Plants to Root Out Indoor Pollutionm newspaper; Los Angeles Times. Here is an education that you will not get from a newspaper or school of any kind:> "Censored Information on Health Care" from the Breast Cancer FundMore in depth information and links are posted after their e-mail alert advising woman to count the number of X-rays they get because the X-rays contribute to breast cancer. Just "connect the dots". In short, medical studies have been "skewed" with incomplete information. Try a Google on "tobacco radiation" and "tobacco pesticide regulations". You will find a number of good investigative journalist reports from verifiable news sources showing that tobacco smoke is full of radioactive pesticides (nerve gas). While a Congressional Report have proven that less than 6% of the know cancer causing chemicals are tracked in cancer cases. The medical studies have been "skewed" with incomplete information as it relates to X-rays and breast cancer and the impact of Depleted Uranium with the Gulf War Vets of whom have posted a DVD titled "Beyond Treason" about that subject. And while most American's are unaware of the numerous radioactive "hot spots" in America, our government continues to release radioactive DU on unsuspecting cities. Many scientific studies show it's a powerful hormone-disruptor linked to breast cancer, but studies funded by the chemical industry say it's harmless. This biased science is showing up in a report issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Now the study director is positioned to either ignore the money trail or apply a consistent, unbiased assessment of the science. The study also found that the number of CT scans, which expose patients to more radiation than an X-ray, jumped from 3 million in 1980 to 62 million in 2006. Ionizing radiation, whose sources include X-rays, CT scans and fluoroscopy, is the best- and longest-established environmental cause of human breast cancer in both women and men. Radiologists urge patients and doctors to weigh the benefits and risks of each scan or exam, and to keep a cumulative record of them. Patients should also look for a facility accredited by the American College of Radiology, which adheres to high safety and quality standards. THOUSANDS of birds have fallen from the skies over Esperance and no one knows why. Texas -- http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/loca... The discovery of dozens of mysteriously dead birds shut down Congress Avenue on Monday morning, closing dozens of businesses for hours and keeping hundreds of workers away from their jobs in part of the city's most important commercial center. Idaho (ducks) -- http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_4855994Preliminary test results indicate a bacterial or fungal infection could be to blame for the deaths of as many as 2,500 mallard ducks in a bizarre cluster along a southeastern Idaho creek bed, a state game official says. More tests are now planned on water and grain, said David Parrish, supervisor for the Magic Valley region of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. "We have some preliminary results," he told The Associated Press late Thursday in a telephone interview. "It could be some type of bacterial infection or a fungal-related infection. But we haven't confirmed that for sure." Parrish and members of the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, the state Department of Agriculture, the federal Homeland Security Department and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conferred by conference call late Thursday. Parrish said the die-off was not typical. "It's fairly uncommon, especially in these types of numbers and in such a confined area," he said. http://www.todaysthv.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=38739 Last year, about 500 mostly mallard ducks died in similar circumstances at a pond in Waterloo, Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said the ducks likely died from Aspergillosis. Maine (crows) -- Sun Journal Residents of the neighborhood next to the Promenade Mall are puzzled over dozens of dead crows that seem to be dropping from the sky. http://www.boston.com/news/local/maine/articles/2006/12... Residents unnerved by the unexplained deaths of dozens of crows in a neighborhood next to the Promenade Mall hope tests by the U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide some answers. To residents, it seems almost as though dead crows were falling from the sky. Damien Perreault, 71, said he disposed of 10 dead crows he found on a walk Monday. That didn't count crows dead in the trees. Ray Beaudoin, a resident of Summit Avenue, called animal control officials when the dead crows started appearing a couple of weeks ago. Azerbaijan (various fowl) -- http://en.apa.az/news.php?id=18697Mass death of poultries is observed in the village Boyuk Bahmanli of Fuzuli region, the villagers told the APA. They said that mass death of poultries was observed in several yards and they appealed to the veterinary service. The death reasons are unknown. Besides, a lot of dead fowls were found in the water basins of the village, as well as in the ponds on the neutral strip on border with Iran. France (chickens) -- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6191599.stmFrench authorities say they cannot rule out bird flu after 4,000 chickens died on a French farm on Saturday. Colorado (mostly starlings) -- http://www.longmontfyi.com/Local-Story.asp?id=14007About 40 dead birds littered a short stretch of U.S . Highway 287 south of the city Tuesday. Boulder County health officials and the Colorado Division of Wildlife were still coordinating efforts late afternoon to investigate the site, just south Mooring Road. South Dakota (geese) -- http://www.argusleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/2... Salinity was responsible for the deaths of about 1,000 geese near Watertown in November. The snow geese and blue geese were found in late November on Lake Nicholson, about 15 miles northwest of Watertown. Tests found high mineral concentrations in their brains. That, along with lethargy observed in dying birds, is consistent with "salt toxicosis," Morlock said. Idaho (owls) -- http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,650221073,00.html A study of roadkill on Interstate 84 between Boise and Burley has found so many dead barn owls that a Boise State University scientist says he's concerned the owls could disappear from areas surrounding the travel corridor. "I don't have enough information to predict the viability of the species," Jim Belthoff told The Times-News. "But the mere fact that cars are killing this many animals from one species is alarming." Belthoff expects to publish a study of the issue later this year. For 2 1/2 years, Belthoff and graduate student, Than Boves, have twice a month driven the southern Idaho highway between Boise and Burley collecting animals killed by vehicles. They found 2,518 dead animals, with 800 of those being barn owls, the most common dead animal found in the study. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Stratfor: Public Policy Intelligence Report - June 28, 2007
*Food Safety: The Importance of Retailers and Codex* By Bart Mongoven
Chinese regulators said June 27 they have shut down more than 180 food processing plants over the past six months for using illegal fillers in food products. The announcement follows a series of incidents in which Chinese processors exported unsafe consumable goods, including pet food and toothpaste -- products that reached store shelves in the United States.
The investigation into the most inflammatory of the incidents, the deadly contamination of pet food with the plasticizer melamine, led to the discovery that excessive amounts of melamine and other similar chemicals are common additives in Chinese food manufacturing. Meanwhile, more than 200 Chinese food shipments have been turned away from the U.S. market in the past year because federal officials considered them contaminated.
As a result of the growing concern among Americans over the potential health risks of food from China, attention is turning to the most influential regulator of food safety in the United States. This is not the Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.), nor is it the Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.). In fact, it is not a government agency at all. It is retailers -- the end-of-the-line sellers who have learned by experience that consumers will blame them if something goes wrong. In the long term, though, the uproar over tainted Chinese products likely will focus public attention on the little-known body that establishes global food safety standards: the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Known as Codex, it is a joint project of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization.
The timing of the contamination incidents could not be worse for Beijing. First, the United States and China are involved in a low-grade trade spat over agriculture imports, with the United States only recently making a concession on the importation of Chinese processed chickens. Meanwhile, China still complains that its products are unfairly turned back at the border and, four years after the U.S. mad cow scare, China continues to ban U.S. beef.
Moreover, the incidents have increased consumer product companies' skittishness about importing food from China just as the United States is beginning to emerge as a major buyer of Chinese foods. They also come at a crucial time in the debate over "country-of-origin" labeling in the United States, and during a period in which retailers are beginning to grow accustomed to their role as the primary food-safety enforcer in the United States.
Regardless of whether the events of the last six months lead to an accelerated phase-in of country-of-origin labeling in the United States (which would force food companies to label fresh meat from China), they will result in dramatic changes in Chinese food manufacturing. Consumer product companies, under pressure from retailers, will demand Chinese government guarantees that the country's food exports are produced in keeping with the minimum recognized international standards.
A likely beneficiary of this hot-button issue is Codex, which not only sets those standards, but also has made increasing its reach into developing countries a prime objective. As China grasps for ways to assure its trading partners and the global food industry that its products can be trusted, working with Codex is emerging as a prominent element of its strategy.
The Problem of Volume
U.S. food safety laws are a complex web of regulations and testing regimes enforced by the U.S.D.A. and the F.D.A. The most important of the U.S. food safety laws is Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (H.A.C.C.P.), which is considered the global model for food safety. All meat and most other products in the United States are subject to H.A.C.C.P. and also to various labeling and registration requirements. Imported food must pass additional hurdles. The most stringent of these, instituted under the Bioterrorism Act of 2002, gives U.S.D.A. inspectors the power to deny access to any food shipment based solely on the inspector's professional assessment that something in the shipment is amiss.
Passed in the wake of 9/11 out of concern that the food supply could be a terrorism target, the Bioterrorism Act also gave the U.S.D.A. a significant increase in funding to inspect imported food. Still, although the number of inspectors at the borders has increased dramatically, the industry estimates that less than 5 percent of the food that enters the country is inspected for safety. The problem, federal officials say, is that the infrastructure to inspect every container of food moving through U.S. ports would be prohibitively expensive. To make the system as efficient as possible, U.S.D.A. policy is to concentrate on shipments of particularly troublesome foods, such as shellfish, and on food from historically troublesome countries, such as China. These are checked far more often than most other food shipments.
If monitoring significant percentages of food imports to the United States seems daunting, imagine the position of a Chinese regulatory agency responsible for monitoring the practices of the country's food processors. Food for export is more highly regulated than food for domestic consumers, whose safety requirements for consumable goods are far more lax. The problem is that many manufacturers make products for both markets, and are more accustomed to the less-stringent standards. Of those that manufacture food for export, the vast majority are small businesses that employ fewer than 10 workers. In fact, most of the 180 facilities shut down by Chinese officials over the past six months have been these small food-processing operations.
Local governments are largely responsible for policing the health and hygiene standards of food-processing facilities, but most do a poor job. First, there is no ethic regarding food safety comparable to that of Europe, the United States or Japan. As a result, there is little indigenous support for local officials to "meddle" in commercial affairs. Further, because food exports are still relatively new in China, food processors do not think of their products as part of a global supply chain. That Americans want something different is not unimportant to small-business owners -- it is simply not something they commonly consider.
In effect, U.S. and Chinese regulators share a key problem: They cannot adequately cover the ground they would need to in order to assure that food is handled properly and is free from contamination.
Consumer Products and Precautions
The most important food regulator in the United States, therefore, is the retailer. More than any other link in the chain, food retailers are universally recognized as the most influential monitors of food safety. The rationale is simple: Decades of experience have shown retailers that when a product makes consumers sick, they do not blame the food manufacturer, they blame the seller -- be it a restaurant or supermarket. Years of bad experiences in trying to pass blame to food processors have convinced food retailers that they have a critical interest in monitoring food safety.
Retailers pass this concern up the chain to the product manufacturers, which also are beginning to see that they are considered crucial elements in the chain of responsibility for food safety. As a result, food manufacturers are becoming increasingly cautious about what products carry their brand name. This, then, is similar to the climate change and chemical usage issues in that critics are forcing companies to embrace precaution as a tool in protecting their core brands.
In doing this, retailers use Codex standards as an important guide. Established by a mix of scientific experts and government representatives, Codex standards are designed to provide a view of the minimum standards for food handling, ingredients, contaminants, etc. These standards are universally recognized as proper (if minimal) standards for food safety. In industrialized countries, the Codex standards are considered important baselines against which food manufacturers can compare their food handling. For developing countries, including China, that lack the resources, expertise or experience necessary to promulgate effective food safety standards, Codex's standards are the basis for national policy.
Because it sets the bar for food safety around the world, Codex's work is of critical importance to the food processors, consumer product companies and retailers in industrialized countries that often depend on imports.
The Power of Standards
China has been active in Codex for more than a decade, and in recent years has become a leading member. In April, it hosted a Codex workshop on food contamination, and took leadership of the Codex committee that studies contamination issues. It also leads the committee concerned with pesticide residues. In taking a leadership role in Codex, Beijing is trying to send a clear message that it understands Codex is an important part of the solution to the bind it is in. Given that the safety of China's food products is being questioned and that the rules are being enforced far more strongly by retailers than government, China's increased participation in Codex makes sense, and building Codex-based standards into all food manufacture appears a crucial element of the country's new strategy.
The challenge it faces is winning adherence by the domestic food industry. It is trying to train food processors in Codex standards, but those efforts are going slowly. Here, Beijing can benefit to some extent from the pressure exerted by retailers in the West. Buyers in Europe, North America and Japan will reward those who follow Codex and, more important, punish those who do not.
Finally, adherence to Codex standards also will give China an additional weapon against the United States in the ongoing tiff over food imports. For centuries, hygiene has been a leading justification for trade barriers between countries. An importing country could claim not that it has a barrier to trade, but rather that the exporter's food products are not up to the importer's hygiene requirements. To end this practice, trade negotiators established Codex standards: If an exporter followed (and enforced) Codex standards, its products could not be deemed "unsanitary" by importers.

The sunscreen myth: How sunscreen products actually promote cancer Friday, June 15, 2007 by: Mike Adams, News Target http://www.newstarget.com/021903.html
Excerpt from article:
the toxic chemical ingredients used in most sunscreen products are actually carcinogenic and have never been safety tested or safety approved by the FDA. They get absorbed right through the skin (a porous organ that absorbs most substances it comes into contact with) and enter the bloodstream.

The attached article on sunlight and the best ways to protect yourself is from: Beyond Health www.beyondhealth.com REPRINTED FROM BEYOND HEALTH News Sunlight and Health
by Raymond Francis
In a number of BHN issues beginning in July/August of '96, we have told our readers that, contrary to popular belief, sunlight does not cause cancer. In fact cancer rates are much lower where there is more sunlight. I have recently come across an excellent book by Zane Kime, MD titled Sunlight. Dr. Kime looks at the relationship of sunlight and human health. He takes studies from the scientific literature and demonstrates sunlight's beneficial effects in lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. He cites how sunlight increases endurance, sex hormone levels, and immunity. The book also contains dietary suggestions on how to protect your skin from sun damage the way nature intended.
It's easy to forget, in the midst of our cancer epidemic, that cancer was traditionally a rare disease affecting less than 1% of the population. The healthy, long-lived populations like the Hunzas and the Vilcabambas lived at high elevations where the sun was more intense. They were out farming every day. Yet they lived to very old ages without getting cancer. If the sun causes cancer, how did these people and others like the Polynesians ever survive? Skin cancer is the end-result of many factors of which inappropriate sun exposure is only one.
Like a lot of things, too much of a good thing can be bad for you. The sun is essential to health, but too little or too much sun will damage health. The sun can do damage if we use it improperly. And use it improperly is what most of us do. Studies show that the incidence of all malignancy is 6 to 10 times lower closer to the equator where there is more sunlight, and people who have chronic exposure to the sun are less likely to develop melanoma than urbanized people who have intermittent exposure.
One of the reasons for lower cancer rates may be that people who are out in the sun all the time form pigments that protect them from the sun, and their sun exposure makes them healthier in the first place. Urban dwellers don't get enough healthy sun exposure. They often get intermittent tans that fade. Repeating this cycle may result in damage because the skin is not protected during the tanning process. Also the urban dweller is much more likely to burn during the tanning process. Some researchers believe that burns are a key to skin cancer. Turning into a red lobster is definitely not conducive to good health, as any lobster can attest.
No one is arguing that sunlight doesn't trigger free radical activity and that the amount of free radicals doesn't increase with the intensity of the sunshine. These free radicals can cause skin to age prematurely, wrinkle, and sunburn, and can damage DNA and cause skin lesions. However, research shows that diets rich in carotenes and other antioxidants protect the skin against the hazards of ultraviolet sunlight. Carotenes are a class of compounds found in plants, fruits, and vegetables that reduce the free radical activity that causes damage and premature aging of cells. Research has shown that diets rich in carotenes reduce the risk of cancer and prevent the damage to DNA that results in a number of degenerative diseases. In fact carotenes are being called nature's "sun umbrella." Carotenes are used up during exposure to sunlight, so one's dietary supply must be adequate to provide continuous protection. Here's the problem. Very few Americans are getting adequate amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet. We are blaming the sun for problems caused by poor diets and excessive inappropriate exposures.
What about sunscreens? A few decades of increasing sunscreen use has done nothing to stop the increasing rate of skin cancer. In fact, the chemicals in sunscreens may even become carcinogenic when exposed to sunlight. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania say that broad-spectrum sunscreens still aren't broad enough to cover the full spectrum of potentially harmful light. Ultraviolet radiation consists of over 100 separate frequencies. Sunscreens don't protect against all, and we don't know which are harmful and which beneficial. We may even be blocking the wrong ones. In addition, using a sunscreen can create a false sense of security and cause people to spend excessive amounts of time in the sun. Researchers at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston say, "There is no substantial evidence that sunscreen protects against any of the three forms of skin cancer. Dr. Robin Marks, a dermatologist and a professor at the University of Melbourne says, "Relying on synthetic chemicals to prevent cancer is laughable." Arthur Rhodes, a University of Pittsburgh dermatologist, told a 1994 meeting of the American Cancer Society that sunscreens "appear weakly effective or ineffective" at preventing cancer.
The fact is we were designed to be out in the sun. Sunlight is absolutely essential for good health in so many ways that we don't even begin to understand them. Unless you do something foolish, the sun won't damage healthy people who have adequate amounts of nutrients like carotenes, lycopene, essential fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, E, and zinc and selenium. Our need for the sun is exemplified by the fact that nature intended we get most of our vitamin D from the sun. Vitamin D is almost totally absent in vegetable foods.
When sunlight strikes the skin it sets off a multi-staged process whereby cholesterol is ultimately changed into vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential to the absorption of calcium from the intestines and for the production of enzymes involved in collagen formation in the bones. Staying out of the sun is partially responsible for our epidemic of osteoporosis, especially in our elderly. One study found that 36% of elderly men and 47% of elderly women were vitamin D deficient. Even moderate sun exposure would help to alleviate this problem. However, sunlight through window glass will not activate vitamin D synthesis.
Sunlight is absolutely essential to good health. Its only been in recent times that the sun has been cast as our enemy. If getting too little or too much sun is bad for us, how can the average person get what they need without harming themselves? First of all get the sun slowly. Secondly, stay out of the midday sun. Timing sun exposures to avoid the hours of 10 to 2 PM will cut ultraviolet exposure by 60% because the sun is less intense. Most everyone should try to get at least ten minutes in the sun on a daily basis and longer on weekends. If you do it this way, your skin will adapt through skin pigmentation and you won't get sunburned. Some experts claim at least one hour of unfiltered sunlight per day is essential to health. This doesn't have to be in direct sun, indirect sunlight is acceptable but it should not be filtered through glass. Sunlight into the retina is a very important nutrient. Retinas need the whole spectrum of solar radiation, and wearing glasses or contacts could screen out important frequencies that are critical to long-term health. When you are in direct sun for long periods, cover up. Wear a broad brimmed hat and suitable clothing.
We need to protect against skin cancer both from the outside and the inside. Getting an optimal amount of nutrients is essential. Eat a diet that is rich in fresh, unrefined, essential fatty acids such as those contained in Udo's Choice. A diet rich in carotenes is essential. Supplementation with products like Caroplete should be considered. Caroplete contains a natural mixture of carotenes including lycopene. In addition, vitamins A, C, and E along with minerals like zinc and selenium will help to both protect and repair skin.
How much sun is right for you depends on your biochemical individuality. With a bit of awareness and following the above suggestions, you should be able to develop a healthy golden tan and reap the benefits of the sun without doing harm. Health is a choice, and by developing good habits and making sensible choices, the sun will be your friend and not your enemy.
