Stupidity

Lo reconozco, siento una especial predilección por estos suecos. Desde Estocolmo siempre me han tenido al tanto de sus pasos, cuando aun no eran mas que una banda con maquetas, pasando por su primer lp, aquel disfrutable “I need you…” hasta el dia de hoy que ya tienen todo un segundo disco en donde lo peor de largo es la portada.

El contenido una lección de clase y de evolución en el sonido sin perder el norte comparables a grupos que han puesto banda sonora a partes de mi vida, bandas como Inmates, Count Bishops, Dr Feelgood….. los suecos en este álbum suenan sin fisura, Erniz canta mejor que nunca y las guitarras de PA no dejan indiferente a nadie, cuando suena “Set me free” que abre el disco a golpe de fuzz en una lección de garage punk sin pose y mucha actitud se confirma que estamos ante una grandísima banda, con sonido y grandes canciones con precisos guitarrazos que son capaces de jugar con el soul ayudado por la sección de viento en “City Boy”, macarrear con un ritmo machacon en ese “Nag Nag Nag”, hacer frente a mis también adorados Girl Trouble mientras trituran “Nice Guy” que perfectamente podría haber sido firmada por los chicos de Tacoma con las guitarras derrochando rock and roll en esos punteos que son veneno sonico.

Miss Anna marca el ritmo con las cuatro cuerdas mientras Erniz interpreta en “Claustrophobia”, sacan a relucir de nuevo como ya hicieron en su primer disco su pasión por los Standells cuando los acordes de guitarra empiezan a desgranar “From my Window”, el espíritu de Link Wray hace acto de presencia en “Bustin’ Out”, mientras los aires del Northwest y todas las bandas que allí hicieron rock and roll en los 60’s se van sucediendo a golpe de tambores en el simple “Ain’t coming back”, el inquietante ambiente que crean en “My Irene” de nuevo con interpretación de Erniz mientras unos extraños sonidos se hacen con la personalidad del tema, las guitarras de nuevo explotan con esos ritmos entrecortados que las bandas que se pateaban los pubs en los 70’s nos enseñaron cuando suena “Hitgirl” o “Go Getter Janey”, como canto el inolvidable Arthur Alexander hace muchos años este “Ilegal U-Turn” son doce auténticos disparos de R&R.

Stupidity övertygade

Det blev en något annorlunda konsertkväll på Club Hopup på Nocks i lördags. De två banden valde att bägge göra två set var om cirka en halvtimme. Det innebar att Sonic Surf City öppnade vid 22.30 och att Stupdity gick på sitt andra sett vid ett-snåret.

Norrköpingsgänget Sonic Surf City har återuppstått efter att ha legat nere ett dussin år. I centrum då som nu Ola ”Woody” Hermansson. Gruppen spelade på Trästock 1992 och det känns som egentligen just ingenting hänt sedan dess.

Det vill säga att gruppen ligger mestadels mitt mellan Beach Boys och Ramones, surfkörer och energi i förening, med garagerockarna The Barracudas briljanta enda surfalbum ”Drop Out With The Barracudas” som mellansteg. Det har onekligen en viss musikalisk charm och det ser rätt roligt ut med Hermansson som popprofessor mitt mellan de yngre svartklädda rockarna.

Det var inte dåligt, men inget man lär bära på någon längre tid heller. Ola Hermanssons stora bidrag till den svenska pophistorien lär bli att han upptäckte såväl Cardigans och Brainpool och signade dem till sitt dåvarande skivbolag Ceilidh.

Stupidity kan man lugnt misstänka ha tagit sitt namn från den Solomon Burke-låt som Dr Feelgod namngav sitt första livealbum efter. Det känns också logiskt musikaliskt. Gruppen står med ena benet i pubrocken och det andra i stökig amerikansk barhängarmylla. Gruppen från söder i Stockholm har två album bakom sig, men är märkligt nog rätt okända.

Den överraskade i vart fall mig med sin mix av garagerock, pop och lite rockabillyrytmer. Ofta låter gruppen som en lite snällare upplaga av The Cramps även om ”City Boy” från nya plattan var den som stack ut mest. Där möts soul och glam på ett snyggt sätt. Sångaren Erniz Lundqvist, som sade sig ha rötterna i Burträsk, har en stark aura och ibland stack den långe gitarristen P A ut och bjöd på lite manisk dans ala..David Byrne.

Stupidity visar att det lönar sig att gräva i den svenska musikaliska underjordsmyllan om man vill få positiva överraskningar.

Songs from our new album "Illegal U-Turn" just added!

Hey friends!

This week we release our new album "Illegal U-Turn" and here are some new added songs from it for you to check out!

"Set Me Free" - This is garage rock with a catchy riff and fuzzy guitars, we have done it live for a while and it feels good to have recorded it trying to keep that live-feeling.

"From My Window" - A pop song the way we do it. Penned by PA and spiced with a catchy bassline from Miss Anna and her Flying V! ;)

"Bustin..Out" - This is a rollin' mini-ganster epic with twangin.. guitars about a guy on the run from his gang with a trunk full of greens, will he ever reach the border?

The album is now ready to order at our page and more distributors are coming. Is there any problem to get it, just let us know!

Stupidity - "Illegal U-turn"

Go Fast Records 120

The new and second album by Stupidity "Illegal U-Turn" includes 12 new sonically charged tracks filled with 60's garage, rockabilly, powerpop and a punk attitude! It includes 11 own compositions plus a cover of the Gene Vincent favourite "Bird Doggin" It will be officially on sale from May 25th on the net and in all good record stores, and more retailers are coming!

The band will start promoting the album with a launch-party and show in Stockholm May 23rd, followed by an Instore apperance at The Beat Goes Record Store in Stockholm June 6th.

This will be followed by U.S. launch-shows in New York City and New Jersey plus radio in Boston/Cambridge during June 18-25, see our Upcoming Shows Calendar here on MySpace for more details on all the shows and times.

Stupidity meets The Fleshtones!

Hey friends!

Last weekend (May 2nd) we had the opportunity to play and party with legendary garage rockers The Fleshtones in Stockholm. This band from New York City has been going on since 1976 and are a great inspiration in music and spirit to us all! The Fleshtones ARE Super Rock!

They put on fantastic live shows and joined us on stage for "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White", we did not have time to rehearse it, but it was fun and so was the rest of the wild night which where dedicated to our common friend Peter Ingvarsson who became 50!! Happy Birthday again Peter!
