WR027

We finished this record and it's been available on our web site WWW.WOODLANDRECORDINGS.COM for a few weeks, but somehow we've neglected to write anything up here about it. Here we are.

WR027

Most of this album was recorded here in Berlin with Martha Rose playing violin and giving advice. A couple of the songs were started in Ireland at the end of last year and went on the ep 'The Hills Are Alive' - but we only made 31 copies of that so we thought it was ok to use them again. Tristan Brusch played some violin too, Vicky from Blanket sang some and Fee Reega stamped and helped out with all.

Jon Simmons says 'It sets its sights at the whole world, in inspired lyricism..' on his blog here.

And here's a review by Ian Chambers in the Brighton Source magazine:

ALBUM: THE GREAT PARK The Wife (Woodland Recordings)
The Great Park is essentially one man, Stephen Burch, who crafts hushed, finger-picked guitar folk. On his latest release The Wife, the ten songs are embellished by mournful violin and minimal percussive accompaniment, while in the middle of a noisy, frenetic world The Great Park sits quite still, whispering striking and heartfelt tales of love, loss and yearning. Another quiet gem of a record from the Woodland Recordings stable and quite possibly Burch’s best work to date. Lovely. (IC)

HOME TAPING IS MUSIC / IT'S NOT PRETTY BEING EASY / IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME / WE'RE A SMALL LABEL LEAVE US ALONE

[01 Sep 2009 | Tuesday]
Hello friends

Things are looking up. Three new releases this month, many shows, much good.

This week on Friday the 4th of September sees the release of 'And They Go Down To It In Ships' - the long awaited new ep from Thirty Pounds Of Bone and our 25th release.

"Lamb singing more beautifully than ever...another barrel of timeless folk laments." Is This Music

This is released in an edition of 100 copies - 5 songs on a stamped cd in a starched and stained sail cloth cover with a hand stitched booklet. Each copy is individually numbered and hand stamped throughout. Yes please.

If you'd like to reserve one please contact us by email only (woodlandrecordings@gmail.com) and we'll hold one for you. Please do not send any money before Friday.

To mark the release of this, Thirty Pounds Of Bone will be playing several shows miles away from the West Country and the English Channel in Berlin and Hamburg:

04/09/09 Intersoup, Berlin
05/09/09 Johann Rose, Berlin
09/09/09 Ä, Berlin
10/09/09 Makrele, Hamburg
11/09/09 Schilling Bar, Berlin

Also playing with Johny at these shows is The Great Park - with the exception of the final Berlin show, which will most probably be with The Diamond Family Archive.

Thirty Pounds Of Bone's debut album was released on the ace Drift Records label and has been described thus:

“This is dark of the blackest of physics” – PlanB

“Proudly different, it has the side-ranging ambition and talent to appeal far more than only folk fans alone” – Record Collector

“There is much to savour on this accomplished collection of plaintive laments, of which the mournful title track and drone like Uyeasound are exceptional” - Q Magazine

“There’s a big hearted muscularity to these songs that makes you return to them like good drinking buddies” – The Word

This wonderful record is still available through Drift and I urge you to find and buy a copy from your local worthy stockist if you haven't done so by now. It makes a great companion to the latest collection of sea-faring songs.

BUT HANG ON!

Our second release THIS WEEK is the second cd this year by Fee Reega - Berlin based German songwriter and creator of home made fireworks. 'Verstand der Dinge' contains five songs we recorded here over the last month or so. It comes in an edition of 100 copies - each with it's own unique, hand cut and assembled sleeve, a booklet with the lyrics in English and German and a tasty shooting target insert.

We finished it this week and see no reason to sit on it for a while - so it will also be available to buy on Friday the 4th of September.

Fee will be in England for September and headlines the Brighton Woodland Recordings / Type Pr night on the 19th at The Basement in Brighton. If anyone can help with any other shows for Fee that month please get in touch as I know she's happy to play as much as she can whilst she's visiting.

A recording of Fee's concert this weekend in Berlin can be downloaded for free from this link:

Our final release this month is the new album by The Great Park. 'The Wife' features 10 songs, recorded with Martha Rose, Tristan Brusch and Vicky from Blanket. It comes in a hand stencilled sleeve, with lyrics insert, clippings and a hand stamped cd.

A song from the new album, 'The Royal Canal' is available to download for free from this link:

And a new live recording from last week's concert at Gelegenheiten in Berlin is available to download for free from this one:

More later, that's quite enough for one day.

ps - The Woodpecker Wooliams cd is out on Autumn Ferment records and we think it's ace and you can get it here:

WR025 - Thirty Pounds Of Bone 'And They Go Down To It In Ships' will be available to buy from the website (http://www.woodlandrecordings.com) from the 4th of September. This release is limited to 100 handmade copies, so if you'd like to reserve a copy email us at woodlandrecordings@gmail.com. Please don't leave messages or send Facebook / Myspace mails or anything like that - we'd like to have names of people who definitely want one in one simple place so we know who to send them out to first. As with most of our releases when we run out of the original edition we're usually too busy with the next thing to have the will to make the earlier ones again. Johny and Laurence have been stitching and varnishing and cutting to make the artwork for this and have probably had enough of that for a while. Anyways, it obviously sounds wonderful too, and here's a review from Is This Music website: "So much so has the Thirty Pounds of Bone debut album, ‘The Homesick Children of Migrant Mothers’, never been off my stereo it’s hard to believe it’s been three years since it was cast onto these shores. Sailing gleefully under the radar with lovelorn tales of arson, kidney failure and whiskey skulduggery it unearthed a treasure of a songwriter in multi-instrumentalist, Johny Lamb. Having seemingly been lost at sea for the last few years the Thirty Pounds of Bone ship has resurfaced with a handful of sea shanties in tow. ‘The Jonah Shanty’ begins the proceedings in the saddest of fashions, with Lamb singing more beautifully than ever, “everyone I loved was taking by the portside, I’ll never love again”, with unsullied harmonies from seamen Sally Megee. The sorrow soon turns into hope with ‘Oh! To Be Ashore’ where Lamb begins to get his priorities sorted, “Hope lies when the pub’s still open”. Yet we all know after such merriment that there has to be a come down, and with some devastatingly beautiful fiddle playing courtesy of Gris Sanderson, ‘Shallow Brown’ is the most delightful centrepiece. A traditional song arranged by Lamb it makes no excuses for its woozy flow and gentle pace, like a drunk staggering home at 4am and falling asleep on the steps outside. ‘Capstan Dance’ is the sound of the sun coming up, and that same drunk opening his eyes, steadying himself, gathering his thoughts and beginning a new day and another journey. Which takes us to ‘The Farewell Shanty’ where Lamb can be found “hauling away his anchor” and heading back out into a sea of obscurity where I’m sure he’s most content. Let’s hope he returns to shore sooner rather than later clutching another barrel of timeless folk laments." We've had some kicks in the teeth this year, but we have not one, not two, but THREE releases in September planned, as well as plenty of shows all over the shop. Good times ahead I hope. be well SB at WR http://www.woodlandrecordings.com HOME TAPING IS MUSIC / MENTION THE WAR / IT'S NOT PRETTY BEING EASY / WE'RE A SMALL LABEL LEAVE US ALONE

Hi Everyone

NEW ALBUM FROM THE DIAMOND FAMILY ARCHIVE

WR024

The long awaited new Woodland Recordings album by Laurence Collyer's The Diamond Family Archive is done and dusted and will be on sale online tomorrow.

'The Wanderer' (WR024) is a collection of 12 classic songs by the likes of Dire Straits, John Lee Hooker, Eddie Cochran, Sam Cooke, Billy Joel, and more. It's a good list, they're all there...

01. Down At The Landing People - John Lee Hooker (3.36)

02. Dark Lonely Street - Eddie Cochran (2.37)

03. A Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke (5.34)

04. Runaround Sue - Ernie Maresca and Dion DiMucci (3.20)

05. The Wanderer - Ernie Maresca and Dion DiMucci (3.02)

06. Telegram Sam - Marc Bolan (3.46)

07. She's Always A Woman - Billy Joel (5.41)

08. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl - Sonny Boy Williamson (3.36)

09. Take It Easy - Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, recorded by The Eagles (4.04)

10. Romeo And Juliet - Mark Knopfler (4.42)

11. Lord Franklin - Traditional, lyrics possibly by Jane Griffin (Lady Franklin) (4.44)

12. Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum (4.15)

Laurence recorded these songs solo over the last year - for the most part they mark a departure from his previous releases and performances in that they are acoustic, simple renditions of other people's songs. Long-loved songs were picked, lyrics printed out and new music written for each.

You can hear 'Romeo and Juliet' on our Myspace page now here:

http://www.myspace.com/woodlandrecordings

The packaging for this is a wonderful handmade object by Tobias Premper. Tobi is a Berlin based artist and author who makes books in boxes, collages, drawings and whatever else he wants. For this project he put together a collection of photographs, poems, clippings, hand stamped pages and objects of affection.

Our release neatly coincides with his latest work 'Greetings From Puggyland'. Details for this and Tobi's other things can be found here:

http://www.bremsspur.net/news.html

Images of the assembly of the artwork are here:

'The Wanderer' is limited to 125 numbered copies - each one signed on the front.

[05 Mar 2009 | Thursday]

We're proud to announce the release of WR022 - Fee Reega 'Du willst kein Bettler sein und ich keine Heilige'.

7 song ep, recorded here in Berlin in January and February 2009. Our first foreign language release - 'You don't want to be a beggar and I don't want to be a saint' - Fee writes and sings beautifully simple songs in German.

Also playing on the record are Tristan Brusch (violin), Philipp Dommershausen (piano and accordion) and Stephen Burch (guitar and singing).

This whole release is a labour of love:

- Fee has made an individual painting for each cover.
- 12 page booklet with the lyrics in German and English.
- Each cd hand stamped with a unique cryptic name.
- Fee also made a seven metre long pencil drawing on tracing paper which she then cut into pieces and stitched into each booklet.
- Hand written and signed label.
- Genuine, working miniature firework set in each (we've had a lot of fun).

So, 100 individually numbered and ridiculously handmade and hand assembled copies - available from the 6th of March for £8 wherever you are and whatever language you struggle with.

Our shop is here - have a look at what we make:
http://www.woodlandrecordings.com/work.html

To celebrate, two gigs in Berlin tomorrow evening:

The Great Park and Fee Reega at Intersoup from 9pm.
The Great Park playing first - early enough for some new songs - Fee finishing with everything she knows.
(Facebook event here: http://www.facebook.com/event...php?eid=66846011396)

Speakeasy Bar from about 12am.
Everyone round the corner to this little bar for some more songs - acoustic in the room, whatever you like.

Please come along if you can - and please buy this wonderful little record so we can make more like it.

Bless you,
SB
