Guy King, a Blues musician heavily influenced by the sounds of the big-band era often associated with the 1930s and 1940s, makes it a point to have a horn section for added depth on his new release, Livin' It, a self-produced album. He wrote five out of the 11 songs and the title track of the same name conveys a soulful tone—a fitting introduction to those unfamiliar with King's career. Although King refuses to label his music and performs at a variety of venues, this album seems to best summarize his personality. The up-tempo rhythm of the tracks "Go Out and Get It" and "The Story" accentuate the horn pieces and allow for an intimate exchange between the rhythm and lead sections. This experience remains unchanged from his live performances both acoustic and with the band. On other tracks like "Countdown / Think", by Willie Kent, or "I'm Still in Love With You", by Aaron "T Bone Walker", Guy still finds a way to personalize the tune while maintaining the integrity of its composers. King has a notable demeanor, a style distinctly his own and unforgettable. His appreciation for his predecessors and influences is avidly displayed in his on-stage persona. The professionalism and seriousness at which he undertakes his endeavors can be used as a gage for younger musicians searching for an identity. He puts all of this into this new release.
King celebrates the release of Livin' It at Buddy Guy's Legends Sunday night, September 21, at 9:30 p.m.

"He's My Blues Brother," Phil Guy's title track to his most recent album, blares through Buddy Guy's Legends at various times of the day and night. The song explains his relationship with his older brother, Buddy Guy. "We are the real Blues brothers!" Phil exclaimed on stage before Buddy joined him in a duet this past January. So, it is with mourning and regret that we hear the news of Phil losing his battle with cancer and passing away on August 20, 2008. But to know that he will never stand on Legends' stage with the club's logo in the background, or that fans listening to him will never boogie to the funky sounds screaming from his guitar, remains an even greater tragedy. His love of Blues remains his legacy. More than a Bluesman, Phil was of course a beloved brother to his siblings as well as a father, grandfather, uncle and husband. Phil shares a similar bio as his older brother Buddy—both were born to sharecroppers, both experienced the adversities of poverty, and both learned to play the guitar on their own. But Phil, born on April 28, 1940, would embark on a musical journey to the soul side of Blues. Phil followed Buddy to Chicago and joined in his band in 1969 before going on his own venture. The band, consisting of the brothers, would regularly perform at Theresa's Lounge. Alongside his brother, Phil jammed with the likes of well-known musicians in tours across Europe, in Africa and in the United States. But it was in the 1990s when Phil went solo. He formed his band—Phil Guy and The Chicago Machine—and delighted fans around the world. Influenced by the upbeat sounds of Jimmy Reed and James Brown, Phil recorded around ten albums and his music continues to be a testimony full of his life's ambitions and accomplishments. The heavy guitar licks and overt bass lines allowed listeners to fully understand the era that was important to Phil. So, as Phil played, the people continued to dance. His albums will continue to rotate through the sound system of Buddy Guy's Legends. But it will have a deeper significance when his name will be mentioned while Buddy reminisces about Blues legends of the past during his own performances. Staff members of Legends will fondly remember his smile, his curly, black hair and thick mustache. Phil will always be apart of the family. And to Legends he will always be known as "Uncle Phil".

With its melodic reggae-wrapped-in-Blues sound, Ana Popovic's "Between Our Worlds" displays the young musician's diverse guitar skills and her soulful voice. It is a perfect summer song to kick back and have a few beers while backyard barbecuing. Growing up in the Yugoslavian Blues scene Popovic fell in love with the guitar at 15 and has never looked back. She was the first European ever nominated for 'Best New Artist Debut' at the W.C. Handy Awards and has spent the last few years touring all over Europe and North America. We, at Buddy Guy's Legends, have the pleasure of welcoming Ana to our stage this Friday night. Don't miss the opportunity to see this hot Blues sensation live.

"Now, this is when Eric Clapton was with Cream", Buddy Guy says as he offers a rendition of "Strange Brew" last January. And seconds later he steps on the distortion petal, waits for a brief silence, turns up the volume and wails the chords to "Voodoo Child". Almost instantly drinks fly, people stand to their feet and roar. With a legendary tune like "Voodoo Child" the name Jimi Hendrix remains forever embedded in the hearts and souls of music lovers. Born in Seattle Hendrix took an early interest in music. His influences included many Blues and rock greats. Hendrix's way of using feedback and distortion to his advantage gave him an unprecedented sound. By late 1966, British fans craved the single "Hey Joe" that stayed at the top of their charts for weeks in early 1967. As years passed Hendrix continued to make a burning impression on music and by 1970 he prepared to lay tracks for a new two-LP set entitled "First Rays of the New Rising Sun". But before the completion of the project Hendrix passed leaving his legacy of music. For more information on Jimi Hendrix, visit jimihendrix.com Source: jimihendrix.com

"Boom, Boom" goes John Lee Hooker. His deep, trancelike voice resonated through house parties long before his 1948 Jukebox hit "Boogie Chillun". Born in 1917 around Clarksdale, Mississippi, Hooker shared similar pasts of other Bluesmen— sons of sharecroppers from dirt poor families looking for a way out. Hooker migrated to Detroit and worked as a janitor. Young, British fans did to Hooker what they have been credited for doing to other Delta-folk singers; they made the singers popular in Europe. Hooker's influence echoes in the walls of Buddy Guy's Legends. His signed guitar hovers on the north wall and Buddy Guy himself, at times, does a deep soul-stirring rendition of "Boom, Boom" on stage. John Lee Hooker is truly a Blues legend.

Eric Davis' relentless determination to show the world his version of the Blues is laid out under his new album Here Comes Trouble. And with a title track of the same Davis gives a fresh, young perspective to the stories sculpted by his guitar and vibrant vocals.
