It was a dull April in Raindrop City, but at least Monday nights were made somewhat more interesting by the weekly hip-hop night hosted by local mc/promoter Emotionz, at the Lamplighter in Gastown.
Perhaps the most enjoyable performer was Heatwave, whose young, ambitious and cocky style was tangibly street-level. He and his crew (most of whom hung out on stage, looking appropriately self-important) put on a good show, despite ongoing sound problems. "Paper Paper" was his opening number and, incidentally, the theme of most of his songs. However, he was able to represent the concept of money in a different way, not as a glorification for material goods but questioning, "tell me why you make the poor people feel ill." His sense of rhythm was akin to jazz, imperfect in all the right ways, raw and gritty. Heatwave is a rare combination, a poet with an edge who can have both street cred and sensitivity.

Genetics were another treat: it is rare to see women in the Vancouver hip-hop scene and even more so when those women can rock a party with intelligence and grace. Both girls sing and rap well; their voices have a combination of sweetness and coarseness which keeps their flows from being monotonous. Some of their songs were a little flaky, "Feeling Like a Million" being a prime example of bubble-gum beats and radio-worthy hooks, but at the same time still relatable. Because Genetics rhyme about boys, partying and revolution they can be appreciated on many levels.

Attending Monday Night Live at the Lamplighter is like going to a thrift store: sorting through the goods eventually leads to some real gems. May promises another month of brand-name hip-hop performances including Moka Only, Grand Analog, Kyprios, Dirty Circus and 49th Peril.
