Hope, a project consisting of eleven artists: james murray, iambic, ishq, ben beiny, halogen, hol baumann, digitonal, snakestyle, bersarin quartett, field rotation and playb. each artist has been asked to compose a piece that represents the following:
“Although we are living in a world of injustices - where the rich get richer, while those in need get left behind - there is often an inherent hope in those who suffer the most. Where people have the least they value more, the simple things that others take for granted. While some are disconnected from the true meaning of life, there are others who appreciate the beauty and awe of the world and what is has to offer. In these souls is a spark of light that no corrupt power can extinguish. Despite the negativity that we are all faced with in life, the human spirit can always overcome. Whether this is in the innocent laughter of a child, the compassion shown from one suffering human being to another, or through the creative translation of emotion into sound, the joy of life is communicated all around us - we need only be willing to open our hearts to it.”

Headphone Commute - Best of 2008Well, it's officially half way through the year. What better time to take a moment and reflect on all the great music that has been released this year so far... Of course, I can only listen to so much. That being said, my selections are obviously biased. They are based on what I've heard, and there is of course so much more!!! But let's face it - I listen to all the good music [haha!], so the list must have some value. In preparing the following I took a barely scientific approach. First, I sifted through my library looking for 2008 releases, and picked out the gems - those artists and albums have been most likely already covered by my reviews here (which makes sense, since I only write about the music that I like). Second, in order to capture all of the missed releases, I polled my readers for their favorite of 2008 so far. I have received an _overwhelming_ response!!! The discussion thread grew to over 50 individually submitted lists, each being unique in its own way, containing many entries re-affirming my already prepared selections. I have actually discovered some amazing albums just because of that (we should do this more often, noh?). I thank you all for your contributions! I then picked out the most notable selections out of the lists. Finally the entire thread of submissions is still available and active (on my last.fm page), which you can browse for individual albums [400+!!!]. So without further ado I present to you the list. Abbasi Brothers - Something Like Nostalgia (Dynamophone) Autechre - Quaristice (Warp) Balmorhea - Rivers Arms (Western Vinyl) Barry Lynn - Balancing Lakes (Planet Mu) Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior (Tempa) Bitcrush - Epilogue In Waves (n5MD) Clark - Turning Dragon (Warp) Claro Intelecto - Metanarrative (Modern Love) Drift, The - Memory Drawings (Temporary Residence Ltd.) Emmanuele Errante - Humus (Somnia) Evan Bartholomew - Secret Entries Into Darkness (Somnia) Evol Intent - Era of Diversion (Evol Intent) Flashbulb, The - Soundtrack To a Vacant Life (Alphabasic) Hammock - Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow (Darla) Hecq - Night Falls (Hymen) Herbaliser, The - Same As It Never Was (Studio !K7) Hol Baumann - Human (Ultimae) Ital Tek - Cyclical (Planet Mu) Jacaszek - Treny (Miasmah) Kangding Ray - Automne Fold (Raster-Noton) Kettel - Myam James Part 1 (Sending Orbs) Meat Beat Manifesto - Autoimmune (Planet Mu) Ólafur Arnalds - Variations of Static (Erased Tapes) Peter Broderick - Float (Type) Portishead - Third (Island / Mercury) Ott - Skylon (Twisted) Skyphone - Avellaneda (Rune Grammofon) Subheim - Approach (Tympanik Audio) Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (XL) Venetian Snares - Detrimentalist (Planet Mu) William Basinski and Richard Chartier - Untitled 1 - 3 (LINE)

"Hats off to my good friend Underfoot for bringing my attention to this new release from an excellent French psybient label, Ultimae Records. The owners of the label, Mahiane (Sunbea) and Vincent Villuis (Aes Dan), have been focusing on some of the most advanced, chilled out, psychedelic ambient sound, with that uplifting morning trance feel. Lyon based Olivier Orand’s (Hol Baumann) sophomore record, Human, is no exception. Orand tastefully blends a pinch of ethnic asian sound with a base of downtempo glitchy atmospherics (reminding me a little of Tipper’s earlier work). Orand’s tracks have previously appeared on almost every installment of the excellent Ultimae Fahrenheit Project series. For the latest compilation volume, Fahrenheit Project Part Six, Orand contributed his Radio Bombay track, which, in my opinion is not the strongest in his entire album. What I’m saying is that Human has a lot more to offer than what you may have accidentally glimpsed through past appearances. I recommend you check out this release in its entirety, especially if you’re interested in exploring another form of chillout: psychill. Other artists to check out: Cell, Aural Planet, Bluetech, and Aes Dana. Favorite track: Benares."

STYLE : Clean downtempo electronica with organic embellishments. Hol Baumann’s sound has a meloancholy, sombre air to it, European dignity and gravity shrouding the album like a heavy urban mist – steady measured rhythms with the low weight of somewhat mechanistic basslines, driving, downbeat arrangements that deliver plenty of shadow. Sparse melodic phrases and themes of synthetic tone and lush chimes repeat and evolve interwoven with international vocal lines – spoken, up-close, almost touching the ear; sung, lightly distorted, thickened. Bright acoustic guitar lines and subtle global instrumentation bring shafts of sunlight to the mix and glitchy details enliven the drum programming. Intense at times, occasionally introspective, contemporary nocturnes – Human is a high quality debut with plenty of hidden depths.
ARTWORK : Human comes in standard Ultimae format – gorgeous panoramic visuals framed with broad black bands. Sharp photo-imagery presents urban scenes enhanced with the atmospheric effects of water – many of the shots are inverted reflections in puddles, rippled, lightly distorted, edged with street surfaces, littered with fallen leaves. Inside is a generous sixteen page booklet with shots of the artist and a full page evocative image for each track footed with only the briefest of background details. Indeed text throughout the package is kept to an elegant minimum encouraging the eye to linger on the pictures.
OVERALL : Hol Baumann is well known to Ultimae fans prior to the release of this debut solo release, having appeared on numerous collections Human delivers a powerful, consistent series of new compositions that demonstrate a sure mastery over the digital tools of the trade, the tracks sounding technically advanced whilst maintaining a vivid musical vision throughout. Less drawn to the ambient side of downtempo, Hol works with a gritty sound that owes a little to Berlin synthesiser music, that said the Ultimae house sound is more evident.
