When Riley was first introduced, I expected her to be a red shirt. Look cute for a few eps then get killed off to remind John about what he's fighting for and all that. Yet, somehow, you're still here! WHY!?!
Riley is USELESS:* She doesn't put out. Or so the show implies. Her and John just "hang out" and it's an innocent romance that climaxes in hand holding and emo longing. If you're really going to be a help to John, it isn't going to be with all your talking. Put your mouth to good use and relieve some of that pent up frustration rather than adding to it.
* She doesn't take orders. John says shut up, she keeps talking. John says not to answer the door, she answers the door.
* She's WAY too emo. She's dragging John down with her. "oh John, I don't care that crazy robots blew a bunch of people away and tried to kill us, I just want to BE WITH YOU!" Her emotions make her stupid and they amplify Johns own stupidity.Some may argue that this is just a means to show that John longs for a regular life of going to the mall and picking up chicks. To show that John wants to be a "regular kid". However, John isn't really that stupid. The kid has seen what's waiting for him and the rest of the human race in the not-too-distant future. Can he REALLY be so self absorbed that he starts bringing dates home just to have them killed by the relentless terminators that are chasing him?
It probably has more to do with the values of the viewing audience rather than more credible reasons. The audience wants to see a vulnerable teenager, longing for romance and love and not the horny soldier who doesn't mind getting laid but will never bring a date into the war.
Or, maybe they're just setting us up for the big Riley death scene where John finds new resolve and pulls his head out of his ass. Finally realizing that all his fucking around has cost him.
--- And another thing, why didn't Riley freak out? They were nearly killed by some madman, for one thing. Did she recognize him as the guy who came to Johns house? Not only that, her boyfriend beat up a cop and broke out of jail. Who does that!? John was using a fake name, took her off to Mexico where she's almost killed... and she's all about staying? "Oh John, I know everything about you has been a lie, but I still want to go out with you!" Ether she's an idiot or we're about to find out that she works for the other side. Some new Terminator that is programmed with annoying teenage tendencies..... ----
Whatever the case, I can't wait until she's dead! She is sooooo utterly annoying and I don't see her getting any more interesting. If you want to give John a love interest, make her someone helpful like Jesse, Dereks chick :) Now THAT girl can fght!
P.S. It took me a while to realie that Brian Austin Friggin' Green is Derek Reese! He is super hotness in this show. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm a sci fi nerd, but killing robots makes him so much cuter :)
