Hello Harley Poe friends, A friend and I have decided to put a movie monster art book together. We are looking for good artists who know and enjoy horror films and are looking to contribute to this art book. For details write to my emai at JOECALIBRETTO@HOTMAIL.COM. Do not write Harley Poe's myspace or my personal myspace, because you won't get a reply. If you like to paint, watercolor, or color with crayons, and you enjoy illustrating monsters and maniacs, then send me a letter and we'll go from there. Thanks a lot jerks, Pappy Joe

Hello fans and lovers and dirty whores, Long time no write, right? Harley Poe has been extremely busy with girlfriends, babies, jobs, booze, school, and other projects, but we just got back from recording a couple more songs at the studio for the new album. We are hoping to have it done this year, and with only five more songs left to record, we might actually accomplish our goal. It's hard to get together sometimes. Thank you so much, everyone, for being patient and still continuing to come to the shows (when we have time to play). It means a lot to us that many of you are still shivering faithfully with antici......pation for the new album. We promise you, this is by far our best work. Stay tuned. Love Pappy Joe

Watched Poltergeist last night. It's been years. Nostalgic feelings of fear and fondness flooded my mind. I honestly had trouble sleeping. Just thought I'd let you all know.
But that's not why I wrote. I have some new guitars thanks to three very generous people. Last I wrote, my guitar had gotten itself smashed. I vented through Myspace; people responded with their sympathies; three of these people sent me guitars. I've sent them each a junk package to show my gratitude for keeping this band alive, but that alone can't show my appreciation. This is cheezy (I take after my mother), but, Brendan, Cynthia, and Ryan, thank you sooooo much for supplying me with these wonderful new (to me) gifts. I honestly had no intention of buying a new guitar after that show, so you guys really did save the band. Everybody should write them a nice thank you letter via myspace. They're on our top friends list so they'll be easy to find. And I'll have pictures up soon of all three guitars. If you three are reading this, know that all future Harley Poe merchandise is yours for the taking. Just write us and let us know. I hope you like the junk mail I've sent. Ok I'm dumb...and so is Kevin.
Also, we are working on brand new material with a new member. Greg Manfredi has joined up with us on the organ for this new batch of songs and it sounds great. By far our best work yet! We are touring a lot at the end of this year and Greg probably won't be able to make most shows, but for those who have already seen us twenty times, we may be playing some new ones. Stay tuned assholes.
Oh, and it really means a lot when we get mail from everybody, but we're trying to use our Harley Poe inbox for business and tour setup only. If you just wish to comment about our music or whatever, then please post on our comments page. If you have a question about tour or shows, then write the band; but, if you have questions directed to a certain member of the band, then please write to their personal myspace. We are all on our top friends list and will do our best to write back.
Thanks bitches,
Pappy Joe

I'm trying to sober up. This is hard to do. I have a headache. Is 'headache' one or two words?
A couple weeks ago Harley Poe played three shows in Indy during a span of four or five hours. It was a great time and I had a little too much to drink then also. The last show of the night was recorded, and if you're really nice to me maybe we'll release it with some new songs (new songs, yeah right). So, anyway, Mercury Radio Theater was in town and that no good cunt smokin', feces eatin' tard-ass known as Buddy jumped on stage, began to dry hump my butt, and took me to the ground along with my precious trashy spray-painted-black Yamaha acoustic guitar. He broke it. I forgave him. We're still friends.
That was until today when Harley Poe was invited to share the stage with such metal bands as Shiteater, Tit Squasher, and the We Eat Acoustic Punk Bands For Lunch Heavy Metal Co. at the Melody Inn Memorial Day Cookout. I think that venue has us play so often because we're easy to ridicule--especially when we're opening for metalheads. Is 'metal heads' one or two words? Anyway, I sorta forgot about my guitar being broken, or maybe I just thought it would fix itself. Well it didn't. Imagine that: Harley Poe makin' fools out of themselves on stage. Luckily, Travis Trash had a guitar in his car. Unluckily, it was an electric guitar and our show still sucked. That's okay, I'm used to that. Some may say sucking is part of our charm. But what I'm not used to is what happened during the middle of our set when I may have gotten a little carried away and threw my broken spray-painted-black Yamaha acoustic guitar at Kevin's head. Why did I do that? I don't know. I was drunk? It's fun to hurt people? I didn't think he'd feel it? Whatever...he did. And his requital was much, much more severe than a bump on the head. I don't think I have to write what he did next. I'm sure you'll all see the pictures.
I guess I don't hate Buddy anymore, after all, Kevin's the one who finished my guitar off. But I can't hate him either. He's so cute. I forgive him. It really doesn't matter anyway. My first acoustic guitar was stolen out of my car while I was visiting a friend. My second electric guitar was stolen by some drunk-ass-bitch super slut after a show right before Christmas. So why not my third guitar get mashed to pieces by two guys the size of linebackers and an unsympathetic crowd whose sole purpose in coming to a Harley Poe show is to see how drunk we get? Why not?
Anyway, if anybody out there in Myspace Land wants to send an acoustic guitar or money my way so Harley Poe can continue to spread our lies, give me a holler.
Oh, and if I could start this day over again knowing what I know now, I wouldn't change a thing.
Pappy Joe

This past tour, good ol' Pappy Joe brought his handy vintage video camera to make a documentary of sorts of our trip to the Mid West and back.
Here is a 30 minute video cut into 5 parts. Enjoy.

Hey kiddies, I just had to post this review. Oh, yeah, and don't forget we're on tour this week. Come see us and bring us gifts of severed heads and alkeeehall. And thank you to those who came to our CD release show.

Zombies. Vampires. Cannibals. You'd expect to find these things on a cold, dark night in late October, but leave it to Kokomo's gothic folk rockers Harley Poe to bring them to Indianapolis on a 70 degree Tuesday evening during spring break. While many 20-somethings were out enjoying the bright sun and warm weather, a small collection of pale music fans hid inside the sweltering Luna Music Midtown and watched the band as they celebrated the release of their split CD, "Harley Poe and the Dead Vampires," recorded with the Seattle band the Dead Vampires.
Harley Poe is made up of Joe Whiteford on lead guitar and vocals, drummer Cristian Riquelme, and guitarist Kevin Phillips. Their songs play out as movies directed by horror legend George A. Romero from a screenplay by Ed Wood. Their sound lies somewhere in the musical spectrum between the Cramps and Sixteen Horsepower and their lyrics are morbid, offensive, and misanthropic. The band opened with "Transvestites Can Be Cannibals Too," a harmonica filled number about a man who makes a public appearance in town wearing his wife's clothes. After being harassed, he gets revenge by eating his tormentors. "I hate people when they aren't polite, if you end up on my table it serves you right," Whiteford sang at one point.
There is no taboo subject when it comes to the content of a Harley Poe song. Their set included an audience sing along about a sexually transmitted disease—interrupted midway through to highlight Riquelme's whistling, which morphed into a string of high pitched meows. On "It's Only the End of the World" the apocalypse was met with an apathetic shoulder shrug while Whiteford exclaimed "the earth will be a better place with out you and me."
The band puts all their energy into a live performance. Their onstage antics—filled with self mocking, audience taunting, and the verbal and physical abuse of Riquleme—work to offset their lyrical content. In the end, Harley Poe isn't about their subject matter, they're about finding a community when you don't fit in anywhere else. Which is what keeps their loyal fans coming back for more.
Harley Poe returns to Indianapolis on March 30th for a show at The Underground inside the Harrison Center. On April 22nd they open for Southern Culture on the Skids at the Vogue.

Happy Valentine's Day you whores! from Harley Poe. Need some good horror flicks to watch with your slut? Then go rent My Bloody Valentine (1981) or Valentine (2001). Neither of the movies are anything too special--you can only find My Bloody Valentine in the MPAA R-rated cut version and Valentine bombed in theaters due to jumping on late during that whole slasher craze before zombie films came back in style, but both are still fun and entertaining. My lover and I watched one just last night right after she finished slapping me around for a good hour or two.
Our new split with the Dead Vampires will be out in just a few more weeks and I'm so excited. We may have found an accordian player and I'm so excited. So many of you have been so friendly and kind to us and I'm so excited. Thanks for writing and commenting on our myspace. It means a lot to us, and I'm sorry if we don't always get the chance to write back, but please don't stop. A lot of you have been asking us to come to your town. Well, keep sending us info to venues you like and when we tour for our new CD we'll try to come your way. Thanks again, everyone, for supporting such trash. I'm so excited. Check out this clever review by Kelzey Riggs:
When I first started listening to Harley Poe's The Dead and the Naked, I was driving and getting pissed. I was so offended I almost missed my turn. This dude was singing about a girl he picked up at a bar who was sucking him off and he was going into detail about what a sucker she was and how slow she was taking it. As a woman who tends to lean towards the feminist side, I could feel my muscles tensing. But just as I reached to press the "stop" button the song's story changed a bit. Suddenly the aforementioned "sucker" was biting the male character's neck in order to draw out a drink of blood. Now he was the sucker! Oh man, the excitement!
This is a band unlike any else. They successfully blend folk, punk, and gore to create a funny, absurd, and danceable sound. It's a small band consisting of a singer/guitarist, bassist, and drummer. The guitar sound varies from mariachi to 3-chord punk and the drums are not always drums but sometimes buckets and other beatable items -perhaps a baby or two.
Harley Poe manages to maintain the brilliance, wittiness and gore throughout The Dead and the Naked, from vampires in "The Suckers" to necrophilia in "Corpse Grindin Man." To top things off, every song features exquisitely placed and simple music. A little punk and a little folk, it's a fun ride that leaves a listener feeling a little guilty. Kind of like eating a really big slice of chocolate cake while having sex with a hooker.
Thanks Kelzey,
Pappy Joe

I remember when Calibretto 13 was leaving Tooth and Nail Records and losing Aaron. We were trying new things. Chad had just joined the band and CJ was playing organ on our albums. I was ready to quit playing, but at the same time I had some big hopes for the band. But during the last days of Calibretto (13), while "losing my faith," Harley Poe was slowly and painfully being born. I remember the first song I wrote for Harley Poe was during a Calibretto 13 tour with Ghoti Hook. I believe it was Homicidal Maniac. I wrote many of the earlier Harley Poe songs while in Calibretto. Of course, Calibretto ended up using a lot of them on our last two eps, but I hope to record those on future Harley Poe albums.
It's funny, I didn't really plan on pursuing Harley Poe after our first album. All the members of Calibretto played on IN THE DARK, then Calibretto played our last Halloween show and we all parted ways. I was without a band...until I met an upright bass player and became excited again. We played some shows, and then Cristian Requelme joined the band to play brushes. Unfortunately, Cristian helped scare away my new bass player, but at least continued with me as a duo for awhile. That lasted a few shows and then Kevin Phillips decided to let himself in as our new bass player. I couldn't say no, after all, he was bigger than me. We were a three piece and I was hesitant.
I think last year around this time Adam Kerr came up to me with his mandolin and played one of my songs. I loved it, and against the discretion of everyone else, I asked him into the band. It was rocky at first, but after a couple months things were really picking up. Until a couple of hours ago, this band was doing GREAT! Shows were getting bigger, we were playing better, and this month we were set to do a new release. That was until Adam didn't come to practice. It's funny how I just can't seem to keep members. I just received a royalty check from Tooth and Nail Records the other day for Calibretto 13 songs and my mom said, "See, you should have kept Calibretto going with your positive lyrics." Maybe she was right, but I would be feigning.
Anyway, Harley Poe is back to playing with just a drummer and a bassist. I suppose we'll adjust to the changes as they come. Who knows, maybe we'll get an organ or a banjo player this time. An accordian sure would be awesome. Maybe Harley Poe is not meant to keep the same roster for more than one album at a time. I do know that I feel right about what I'm doing and I'm having a great time, so as long as I have my songs and an audience to sing for, I ain't givin' up. The doors will open and soon Harley Poe will have a new member, or maybe we'll just cruise as a three piece for awhile.
See you guys at the shows.

I'd just like to remind everybody that Harley Poe will be on tour this week and part of next as we drive up to Colorado to play South Park Fest. Slim Cessna's Auto Club is going to be there so of course I'm not going to be able to keep myself dry. They are the best country band EVER and I can't wait to say, "My band played a festival with Slim!" I'm such a little girl.
Don't forget, our new ep was just released a couple weeks ago and we have new t-shirts available. Both of our albums are limited press and will probably be gone within the month, so don't delay! You can get our t-shirt from www.standardrecording.com and our albums from www.amazon.com or www.standardrecording.com
This October we will be going to the studio to record a new split album with Seattle's Dead Vampires. It's going to be a great release with five songs each. Our five songs shall be studio versions of What's a Devil to do?, Corpse Grindin' Man (band version), I Could Aways Eat Your Brain (new version), a new song by our very own Grandpa Kerr, and a special Christmas song that we will play on our myspace this December.
Alright creeps, see you on the streets.
Pappy Joe loves you. |
