WINKSTOCK 08 SATURDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER
After the success of the first Winkstock last summer, which featured outstanding sets from the likes of Hreda, Theo & Eduard Soundingblock. Event organiser Lee Riley (Euhedral, Egyptian Death) has this year joined forces with Permanent Vacation to put together a day of bands that we feel will surpass last year's benchmark. In moving away from a strictly local acts remit, this year's event pulls together some of the best upcoming acts from the UK underground. From rising London stars Gentle Friendly (No Pain In Pop) who feature members of the much lauded Buttonhead to new Upset The Rhythm signings Chops, an astonishing Leeds act who sound like Sun Ra Arkestra and Battles jamming together in a sweaty downtown Istanbul club in the early hours of the morning. Not to mention the now legendary Manatees (Motive Sound), who will be finishing off the day in their own loud and uncompromising fashion. There will also be a small records fair featuring distros from the likes of Chinchilla Records & Vacuous Pop.
PERMANENT VACATION PRESENTS WINKSTOCK '08
MANATEES (Motive Sound / Eye of Sound) These guys are a must for all fans of Melvins, Swans and bowel moving tones. They're gonna shake the place to its core. http://www.myspace.com/manateetheband
GENTLE FRIENDLY (No Pain In Pop) London two piece featuring members of Buttonhead who've put together an ingenious brew of euphoric organ drones, hissy tape loops, arching vocal harmonies and rapid fire drum patterns that's all hermetically sealed in a Warholian style pop format. Probably one of the most unique bands in the UK at the moment. http://www.myspace.com/gentlefriendly
CHOPS (Upset the Rhythm) Like Sun Ra Arkestra and Battles jamming together in a sweaty downtown Istanbul club. We're hearing the future. http://www.myspace.com/mightychops
ELAPSE-O (YUL / Records on Ribs) The founding members of Permanent Vacation have been crafting their sound for about 2 years into this awesome wall of sound. http://www.myspace.com/elapseo
YOU'RE SMILING NOW BUT WE'LL ALL TURN INTO DEMONS (Beware of the Priest) Rough and ready psychedelic stomp from Portsmouth hard hitters. Dig. http://www.myspace.com/thedemons JOEY CHAINSAW (Bumtapes) Chaotic streaks of sonic terror. http://www.myspace.com/joeeychainsawCLARA KINDLE (Woodland Recordings) Spoken word short stories that come to life with melodies and atomospheric sounds, this is dreamland. http://www.myspace.com/clarakindleaudioAMERICAN GODS Loud layered guitars, pounding drums withs hints of early Liars - starting the day as it should be. http://www.myspace.com/thenoiseamericangodsmake £7 @ The Port Mahon, St Clements, Oxford http://www.myspace.com/permanentvacation1http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=20954096579 http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3721608
