Hi everyone :)

Hopes this finds you happy and well. We at Lujo have so much to be thankful for this season but wanted to share with you some sad news because we're family, all of us, and with the good news that is often shared in this forum, there comes some sad news from time to time. John Spalding, former member of late 90s Tooth and Nail band Ninety Pound Wuss, Raft of Dead Monkeys, and Lujo's own Suffering and the Hideous Thieves, died last week after a grueling four year battle against cancer. Over the years, Spalding amassed a sizeable library of home recording demos that, after his diagnosis, became a music project titled LoveLand. Members of Seattle area bands Minus The Bear, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Suffering and the Hideous Thieves, Botch, Roy, These Arms Are Snakes, Roadside Monument, Blood Brothers, and others contributed to the yet-to-be release recording, The Beautiful Truth. There are plans to officially release the album but for now you can hear his music via his MySpace page.

Friends of John's have set up a fund at Bank of America. Just stop by any BoA to contribute, tell them you'd like to give to the 'John D. Spalding Medical Fund'. All proceeds will go to his wife, Jody.

John invited others into his life and pulled people together for the sake of faith, hope, love and music. He will be sorely, sorely missed.

Now onto what's crackin'...

Baby Teeth on Daytrotter.

Just when you thought there was nothing new on the internet, the guys at Daytrotter just posted a new session with Baby Teeth! Head on over to hear cuts from the forthcoming Spring of '09 album, Hustle Beach!

Baby Teeth on Daytrotter

Also! Speak, Memory, Baby Teeth frontman, Abraham Levitan's solo album is available now! Here's what the people are saying:

Formerly known as Pearly Sweets when he fronted the Chicago-based club rock trio Baby Teeth, singer/ songwriter/ keyboardist Abraham Levitan has taken a short reprieve from the band to try his hand at being a solo artist with the release of his new album Speak, Memory from Lujo Records. Levitan's similarities to David Bowie's...Read More

...You all should probably check out Abraham Levitan's newest album entitled Speak, Memory. Seriously, it's pretty good. And they didn't pay me to say that, either. This is another example of...Read More

Dissonance has never been this retro. Say hello to Chicago's own Abraham Levitan, the mastermind behind eccentric indie-pop group Baby Teeth. Vocalist and keyboardist extraordinaire, Levitan has branched out from his retro-funk project to dabble in an electro-indie sound not-so-firmly based in...Read More

AND THAT'S NOT ALL FROM WORLD O' BABY TEETH! The new All City Affairs (Baby Teeth drummer Peter Andreadis' project) is kicking butt, too! Um, and.... there might even be a solo concept record from Baby Teeth bassist Jim Cooper coming in early 2009. Maybe. No promises!

Singles More Singles and B-sides.

Buy The Truth is the new single from Cool Hand Luke! This 3-track single (one new song from the full length, two b-sides) is available exclusively at iTunes and is a great introduction to the band OR a great way to introduce a friend to the band. (Hello, gift this music!!) crg303 says of the single, "Buy The Truth is a fantastic addition to the already solid album and well worth your three dollars." Word. Someone knows what's up! Click here to preview tracks and purchase!

The Dark Romantics have got you covered here, too, with their single Let's Ride which includes two b-sides you won't find anywhere else! This also makes a great gift. Ah-ha! It's one size fits all people!! Click here to preview tracks and purchase!

More Dark Romantics

Remember last time when I told you we'd have The Dark Romantics video for you really soon? Well, I am no liar, here she is!!! Enjoooooooy!

T-Shirts Make Good Christmas Gifts.

I know, I'm a genius to suggest this idea. But seriously, how fun is it to get a t-shirt from your weird uncle instead of the loaded gun? Don't ask. Not only can you give the gift of T-shirt, but you can put it on your list, too. (Just don't forget to indicate your size if it isn't obvious to your loved ones.. That's advice you'll only find here! I know some people really ride that fence between small and medium if you know what I'm saying. These shirts, like I mentioned before, are brand new. Go crazy! My personal fave is the Cool Hand Luke design.

Pretty sweet, right? Check out more here!

ALSO IN THE NEWS... New digital singles (with exclusive b-sides) from Baby Teeth and Pomegranates coming in January. (That's next month!)... New full-length albums from Pomegranates, Baby Teeth and New Brutalism out in early 2009... Coming soon Mouse Fire re-re-Remix EP and a full-length album currently in the workings... New MP3s from all current releases can be found at Lujorecords.com and Myspace.com/lujorecords.

That's all for now everyone! Hugs!

THE DARK ROMANTICS BRING THE LOVE AND PAIN!

Kids: The Dark Romantics' sizzlin' new record, Heartbreaker is out TODAY! I can't say enough about how amazing this record is. It's rock and roll the way it was meant to be--danceable! Pitchfork called it "sleek dance rock." Yes kids, I'll say it again: The Romantics are one talented crew of husband and wife action, sister action, and best friend action. If you don't know what I'm talking about, peep their bio here.

And while you're there, take a listen to and/or download Let's Ride and Hush Your Mouth. Do it. Do it now! If those songs don't entice you, I don't know what will! (Except maybe lead vox, Eric Collin's, sexy snarl!)

Buy Heartbreaker on iTunes!

Buy a physical copy of Heartbreaker in the Lujo Merchline-powered Webstore!

Guys, we don't put these records for our health, we put them out because they are great. Therefore, you should buy them. My logic is good! Buy Heartbreaker today.

Point your browsers here: IndieRockReviews.com

This is a website run by the amazing Travis. If you don't know who Travis is, I suggest you try and find out. He's one radical dude--and not just because his site is totally pimpin' Lujo right now.

Check out the Free Albums on the left panel. You'll find records from BABY TEETH, PLANAR and SUFFERING AND THE HIDEOUS THIEVES for -ahem- absolutely FREE!! WHAT! I know.

Also, you have to peep the super entertaining interview of our DARK ROMANTICS found in the Features section. There's also a contest to enter to win free Darkies shwag! (Scroll down, right hand panel.) Here's a little teaser:

-
"The Dark Romantics lead singer Eric Collins can sing better than you and I. In fact he has one of the smoothest vocals in the biz. That's why I tied some rope around his neck and made him do this interview to celebrate the release of their new album "Heartbreaker". As a bonus we are offering up a Free Album Download for their "Another Song" EP and Contest to win some great DM merch. Thanks to the beautiful people at Lujo Records this was all made possible.

IRR: Let's cut to the chase. Why don't you add a 6th member to the band, a male I'm presuming, so Stephanie isn't the 5th wheel anymore. What do you say about that?

Eric: Ha-ha. We've been trying to talk her husband into tour managing for us, but unfortunately he knows..."

Go to IndieRockReviews.com to read on! And check out all the other cool stuff the site has to offer. Lots of free music and interesting interviews/reviews. Your new favorite site for music!?

Current mood:  energetic
Hi guys!

We've just added a pretty amazing package deal to our webstore at Lujorecords.com! It includes all 7 of our releases from 2008--new albums from POMEGRANATES, LOOK MEXICO, DEATH HOUSE CHAPLAIN, THE OUT_CIRCUIT, THE DARK ROMANTICS, and COOL HAND LUKE! Wait a second. Did I just say "new albums from THE DARK ROMANTICS and COOL HAND LUKE"????? Oh yes, my pretties, I did. Go on now, read!

=====

COOL HAND LUKE // THE SLEEPING HOUSE

AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY FROM LUJORECORDS.COM NOW!!

Pre-orders for the brand new album from Lujo newbies COOL HAND LUKE are being taken and shipped now at Lujorecords.com way before the official street date of Oct 14th! The Sleeping House, produced by Matt Goldman (Copeland, Underoath, Anathallo, Meg & Dia), is the first album from COOL HAND LUKE since 2004's The Fires of Life. Here's what frontman Mark Nicks has to say about it:

"This record differs from the past few records because it is a little more rocking and aggressive at times and a little darker at times. I wrote a lot more of this record for piano than any previous records, so it has more of that kind of feel to it. New players have obviously brought new things to the band and changed certain elements, but it isn't a huge change in direction overall. This new record was recorded with Matt Goldman and that has changed the sound as well. The guitars and drums sound bigger. We took a more stripped down approach to vocals. We didn't double anything and left it sounding a little more human. It's the best recording Cool Hand Luke has ever done."

=====

THE DARK ROMANTICS // HEARTBREAKER

AVAILABLE NOW FOR PRE-ORDER EXCLUSIVELY FROM LUJORECORDS.COM!!

Heartbreaker is the stunning sophomore effort from THE DARK ROMANTICS--13 tracks of dark, sexy, transcendental rock and roll. Building on themes of love, pain and -well- heartbreak, the album boasts the most impressive vocals we've seen from Collins so far, who's been compared to A.C Newman (NEW PORNOGRAPHERS) and Thom Yorke (RADIOHEAD). A brooding vox is matched with eclectic instrumentation. An engaging and carefully crafted string section works it's way into the mix as well. "Heartbreaker differs from past records in that it's much more dark, and much more romantic," says Collins, "it's is a complete thought with different dynamics and moods."

Once again we have this record available to you long before its official release date (September 9). All pre-orders from Lujorecords.com will ship by July 15th and will include free copies of Masquerade (featuring two exclusive DARK ROMANTICS tracks), and their Another Song EP!

Also be sure to check out THE DARK ROMANTICS on REAX TV covering Portisheads' "Roads" at their album release show for the brand new Lonely Roads 7" released by NEW GRANADA RECORDS.

POMEGRANTES // DAYTROTTER.COM

Did you see POMEGRANATES as SPIN.com's Band of the Day, or when their video "Whom/Who" was featured on the front page of Youtube.com? Well get this--now POMEGRANATES have done a live session with Daytrotter.com! You can listen to 4 downloadable (yes--downloadable!) tracks they recorded in the Daytrotter studio and read a very nice review. Very nice, indeed! Here's the link to the whole shebang:

HISTORY INVADES // NEW ALBUM ON ITUNES!

Amigos. COMPANGLOMAMMOTH, the difficult-to-spell new album by HISTORY INVADES, is available ahora on iTunes. It's by far the best work of Paul Harper and Co.'s careers.

click it------->

The new album is a blend of the electronic elements of their second album IVVI and the raw rock of their first album The Structure.... COMPANGLOMAMMOTH features guest vocals and instrumentation by Nigel Evan Dennis of THE EVALUATION and A LULL. Check out two free downloadable MP3's from Lujorecords.com!

***MUY IMPORTANTE SIDE NOTE: Erik and Jocelyn named their new puppy after Paul Albert Harper of HISTORY INVADES--that's how much they love him. Here he is. Ready?

Ready?!?...

Wait for it...................

OKAY!

Mhmm. The cutest.

=====

LOST ALBUM BY PLANAR // AVAILABLE NOW ON ITUNES

This Battle Will Make Your Blood Boil, the second album by PLANAR, one of the most criminally underrated bands ever to be on Lujo, is now available on iTunes.

click it------->

The album recorded back in 2005/2006 and completed just as the band broke up, boasts some of the most beautiful music we've ever had the privilege to release. Rumors abound that the band will reunite to take another stab at indie rock stardom, and we hope they're true. Stay tuned! And in the meantime, check out two free downloadable MP3's from Lujorecords.com, which includes "No Numbers"--arguably the prettiest song we've ever released.

Click to hear "No Numbers" right now!

POMEGRANATES
The Fruits Are For The Birds, The Band...The Clouds
20 June 2008

Words by Sean Moeller // Illustration by Johnnie Cluney // Sound engineering by Patrick Stolley

"The health kick that abounded around the juice of these pomegranate fruits never really caught on here in the Midwest, so far as I know. We're – and I'm speaking for the most of us – never really bothered to learn what the advantages of spending four times as much for it in comparison to the juices of grapes, cranberries or oranges would be – not to mention what the fruits natural powers are. They must be great to require such a huge price tag. These fruits, for the most part, are just fruits like all the rest. They're all probably very good for us and none the greater..."

SPIN.com's Artist of the Day is..... POMEGRANATES !!

Cincinnati-based "art-pop" quartet blend genre-spanning influences into glimmering, just-released debut, Everything is Alive.

What? Much like the health advantages of the band's namesake fruit, Pomegranates' debut full-length, the shimmering self-professed "art-pop" set Everything is Alive (out May 13 via Lujo Records), is vastly beneficial to both the ears and music library of any serious indie rock fan. CONGRATS to POMEGRANATES on the release of their first record, the already critically acclaimed Everything Is Alive!!   Album is in stores nationwide and also available on iTunes !!

Cincinnati-based quartet, Pomegranates, work a fine blend of pop rock, or as the boys call it, "art pop." Drawing on influences like The Beach Boys and The Kinks, the band's debut full length, Everything Is Alive, is a 10-track recording that's as timeless as it is fresh.  From start to finish, the album is, simply put, a delight.

Pomegranates - Whom/Who

Press Quotes:

"Comparisons to early Modest Mouse are pretty spot on so long as that's not the last word.  Pomegranates' sonic template is much wider, their pop, poppier."  -KEXP Blog

"Everything Is Alive is an album completely comfortable in its own skin. In essence, the album title is brilliant. Whatever flaws and callouses the band possesses, it is what makes them unique and it breathes life into Everything Is Alive." –
Sounds As Language.com

"Easily my favorite local album so far this year, Everything Is Alive combines all the sugary sweet melodies and hooks of Two Eyes with some well crafted songwriting and polished instrumentation. And really, when it comes down to it, this record is just loads of fun." –
Each Note Secure.com

"Pomegranates use just enough varied instrumentation to their advantage, with samples, keys and acoustic guitars creating enough different sounds to prevent monotony..."  -
Punknews.org

"Fantastic indie newcomers…Think a less spastic, but no less dynamic Modest Mouse."  -
Ohio City Beat

"Pomegranates offer a straightforward indie-pop approach to their music, it's simple and easy to listen to, the melodies are infectious and for reasons beyond your direct understanding you could spend hours listening to this album over and over again." –
Altsounds.com

"This Ohio-based four-piece brings to mind visions of Transatlanticism-era Death Cab For Cutie and '90s Britpop with their big, bright sound. The lyrics themselves are intelligent without being pompous or overbearing, drawing from literary sources that are mythological and biblical in nature." -
Amplifier Magazine.com

"Infectious indie pop…. I couldn't ask for better executed music…" -
Analog Scene.com

"With all the softly swooping melodies the blog-and-tunnel indie fashion victims love without any of that lingering aftertaste of melodrama. It's almost as if indie kids learned to have fun again."  -
Aversion

"Pomegranates showcase transitions and dynamic prowess [through use of] melodic guitar lines, gusto vocals, and unorthodox song structures." -
CEDARS NEWSPAPER

"Fuzzy, heartwarming indie pop, like everything, is indeed alive." –
Spill Magazine

"…a rather delectable little piece of music."  -
Dryvetyme Online.com

"…mixing swirling guitars, fast beats, soft-spoken vocals, and handclaps all together without even thinking twice…somehow Pomegranates are charming enough to pull all of that off without resulting in a sugar coma for the listener."  –
For The Sound.com

"…something about this band just sounds wonderfully familiar." -
Ink19.com

"I'm sort of getting that whole Wolf Parade/ Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! thing here, only Pomegranates seem to lean more towards the pop and less towards the experimental. There are dance beats, keyboard lines, handclaps, and the sort of across the room backing shouts…"  -
Myfriendclevland.com

"There are more layers than it's worth counting…Just when the sweet melodies lull the album into complacency, ringing guitars and quirky rhythms keep everything from falling into that misplaced comfort.  As it meanders from happy to dark, from melodic to noisy, it avoids typical pop conventions to invent its own direction. Such endeavors often spell disaster, but not here." -
Rock And Roll and Meandering Nonsense.com

"Expect great things. From the get-go, your ears perk up to the vibrating notes of a keyboard, then the clap-along strumming of multiple guitars. And clap you will… sparse, imaginative lyrics mixed with instrumental rock movements similar to early Modest Mouse or more dancey bits like Pulp." -
Slug Mag

"The band has a reckless and infectious abandon with their songwriting. Yet, all seems perfectly in place. The melodies simply ooze out from these dynamic bursts of indie pop."  -Sounds As Language.com, Band of The Day

"…the band makes catchy songs and there is nothing at all wrong with that."  -
Stereo Subversion.com

"It's really refreshing to hear music here in town that doesn't sound like it's from Cincinnati… sounds like some good indie pop on the east coast." -Matt Shiverdecker, WOXY
