Alright on to the blogging.

I have only been dong this for about a week..so I'm just gonna start this weekly round up of an album/book and movie I suggest. Give a short reviewon each and that's it. I will blog on other things as well but rest assured there will be a weekly post on these matters.

Book.  "The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel" by Amy Hempel{duh}

The fear of human connection — especially the connection between mother and child — is  a  theme of Hempel's. "The only time the word baby doesn't scare me is the time that it should, when it is what a man calls me," says the narrator of "Tumble Home." That fear is a failure of empathy, a failure that haunts the powerful story "In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson Is Buried." This story is the very first one she ever wrote, which might give aspiring writers pause for thought. In it, a woman doesn't quite rise to the task of supporting a dying friend; it's as simple, as awful, as that. As the narrator of that story says: "What seems dangerous often is not — black snakes, for example, or clear-air turbulence. While things that just lie there, like this beach, are loaded with jeopardy." There it is. The threat of Amy Hempel's conversation.Hempel's plain, unexplicit language somehow conveys the madness of desire; and so, it is in just such a story — apparently harsh, seemingly cold — that Hempel's genius, and a kind of redemption, can really be found.

For here is the redemption of real art. You could call Hempel part of a movement in the trajectory of the American short story, and Rick Moody, in his intelligent introduction, places her alongside Grace Paley, Ann Beattie and others — women writers who rise above what he sees as the "rage" and posturing of their male counterparts. But in the end such comparisons don't matter. Amy Hempel is herself. You read her stories and wonder, Why are they so wonderful? The answer comes to you at the very end of this volume, in a line toward the close of "Offertory." "Because a human being made this." That's all you need to know. Take it slowly. You'll see what I mean.

Now the album...... Gravediggaz "The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel"

now it was released in 97..this should be no reason for anyone not to hear or buy this album..It was easy 10 years ahead of it;s time so now is a perfecr time to listen. Here's what wikipedia says......

Gravediggaz was an American Hip Hop group from New York City, well-known for its dark sense of humor and abrasive, menacing soundscapes. The group was formed in 1994 and was effectively a supergroup, bringing together Prince Paul (The Undertaker) Frukwan (The Gatekeeper), Too Poetic (The Grym Reaper), and RZA (The Rzarector). The group is widely credited as being one of the most influential and pioneering groups in the small hip-hop subgenre of horrorcore.

Now this album is NOT a Horrorcore album. It's more of a warning about what will happen if we continue to live as mentally dead people.

.. the group's name "means digging graves of the mentally dead, and it stood for resurrecting the mentally dead from their state of unawareness and ignorance

Any group that has RZA and Prince Paul as the two producers should be listened to for sheer sonic reasons...but this group has two MC's {not including the RZA..who is amazing} Frukwan and Too Poetic that are pretty unheard of..and pretty amazing in their own right.. Too Poetic died of colon cancer in 2001. I will post a link to my favorite song from the album{hard to pick} Go get this or at least download it....it is fucking off the wall.

The song I'm posting is "the unexplained" feat. only poetic and frukwan because I'm sure you all allready know RZA's work.

Also Kelis{of Bossy/Milkshake fame} made her recording debut on this album "fairytalz"...just so you know...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg5pgtiryYg

I'll get to the movie later......

enjoy the book and album...lettme know what you think.

Wow, 15 years.

15 years ago, these two classic albums were released to a world where hip-hop was changing and becoming increasingly popular. MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS was A Tribe Called Quest's third album and even with hits like "Scenario", "Hot Sex", "Check The Rhyme", and "Bonita Applebum" behind them, this was the album that would set them apart from the rest. This goes back to when an artist reaching their third album was a sign of success, and they managed to make it without much tension. This was very much NY hip-hop at its best, where Phife continued to prove he was more than capable of stepping away from Q-Tip's dominance on the mic. No one was sure what hip-hop's future had in store{nor were they extremely worried}, because of MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS they were glad to be here in the now.

Then there was an album that was initially a slow burner. ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS) was the debut album from The RZA, The GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspector Deck, Raekwon The Chef, U-God, Ghostface Killer, and the Method Man. They were a group who had other names they went under, whose skills were promoted as if they were superheroes from the Marvel Universe, and were a mystery since their videos were not in heavy rotation and while we all knew who Method Man was with the "Method Man" video, no one could quite match up the name with the voice and the face. Then the spring of 1994 came, and "C.R.E.A.M." was released as a single. That was the start of the Wu revolution, with talks of each member releasing their own album, a possible Wu-Tang movie, which lead to talks about a Wu-Tang theme park, Wu cartoons… it seemed endless. Before the empire collapsed, we were able to watch and listen to it being build, brick by brick. This was the groundbreaking.

Feel free to leave your comments about how these albums{or other albums} affected you. I'll go first.

WOW!!!!! I was about to turn 15 when these two came out. Low End was the first tape I ever bought w/my own money. I stole a bunch of my Mom's asshole boyfriend{who was a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates} baseball cards and took them to a card shop thata was in the same plaza as the record store…sold them shits and went and copped both of these. I remeber going home and listening to MM and HATING IT. Then thinking..give it a chance…it's Tribe after all. Next Listen and by Steve Biko second verse…had me. MM is my fav album ever…"Lyrics To Go" and "God Lives Through"{both songs below} are the heaters on that album{along w/the obvious favorites}. Buy It.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vi6-Bd5qUVk "Lyrics To Go" ATCQuest {The organ in this song is tool of SATAN....so simple{three bar loop} so buttery smooth...fucking puuuurfect...must be Satan...ok,ok I guess it could be God/Buddah/Vishnu/Santa/David Lee Roth{your version of God} too...but it was probably Q-Tip.

"What goods an ear without a Q-Tip in it?"  {guess who?...yep...Q-Tip}

Enter36 was just some other shit..to me the only two albums that fucked me up production wise were"Sgt. Peppers Lonley Hearts Club Band" and Enter the 36 Chambers". Still to this day I listen and go…"How the Fuck did they get that sound?" Exzibit A below....RZA was on some shit for this album. Never has an album felt so unkempt and was a thosand times more realistic nnd gritty because of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OEcZqG9xnE  "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuttin To Fuck With" b/w "Shame On A Nigga" off of Enter The 36 Chambers.

Buy It.Yes.DO IT NOW.

As Ahmir Thompson{The Roots} says   "…it was the high water mark for hip hop"…I couldn't agree more.

It's funny I turned 15 on Dec.2-1993 Midnight Marauders was my most played album…..turning 30 on tues. the 2nd and Q-Tip's album is in the heaviest rotation……..the more shit changes the more it stays the same……

Wu{RZA} & Tribe{QTIP}main producers in italics{and the Beatles} made me start listening..really breaking down music. Got me into melodies,transistions...etc.

run dmc to ice-t to beastie boys to tribe to de la soul to pharcyde to slum village to common to roots to dilla to madlib to mf doom …and it don't stop.

Thank you -Tribe thank you. Wu,Thank you. Hip hop thank you. Thank you music.

As far back as I can remember{after 17 yr old} I thought that 17 was my most fun year of my life to that point. I guess maybe I thought that because I was at the age where you were pretty much past that "having to prove you're tuff at every oppurtunity" phase and you're at the "I'm just getting fucked up and chasing pussy and money phase"{when does that phase end exactly?}So you could basically do whatever you wanted and my crew was like 12 deep and I rolled w/almost everone's cliques ..everyone did that. Once our high school got past the stupid shit it was pretty tolerable if you knew how to tweek it{or sold drugs so everbody was nice}{wow, revelation}. But then I realizeed it was probably the constant thumping of fucking godly hip hop music that any person that ever breathes should have the pleasure of growing up/into. Look @ the albums that came out this year..and that's just a snippet...case in point.

That's some heavy hitters right? I know damn...that's gotta be about it,... right?

Oh wait and here were my heaviest end to end burners......these are the albums that soundtracked the {alleged...I think I remeber it being pretty decent}best year of my life{in reality...the best music year of my life{arguably 93'was close}.

 It Was WrittenMuddy WatersReasonable Doubt

The ScoreHell on EarthSoul on Ice

Of course the creme de la creme......My favorite album of my favorite year....Bought with my first checking account...Just moved to Pittsburgh...opened it w/50 bucks...went straight to SAM GOODY and copped 245 dollars in CD's and tapes. Here it is the crown jewel of that purchase and the Cd that put me down to my favorite group in hip hop...the live show clinches it over the other close contenders.

Illadelph Halflife

  Perfect Album. Go get it if you don't have it.Go see them live.

Peace.
