It is officially ‘that’ time of year again! Christmas parties,
family dinners, and new years celebrations! All the fun things that we
look forward to every year as we let loose and gear up to ring in
another new and exciting year! However, the post effects of the
holidays usually bring an unwelcoming feeling! A feeling of over eating
guilt paired along side regret. The end result… a few hangovers,
5-10lbs of weight gain and a whole lot of motivation to get back on the
wagon! Not this year my friends, I refuse it to be me! Make this year a
year for no regrets or guilt, and plan on surviving the holiday season
without the weight gain! Here are some tips on how to handle all the
stresses and temptations that the holidays bring!
Use the 80/20 rule: 80% of the time stick to clean eating and hard training. Use the other 20% to live a little.
Set a goal and stick to it: Without a goal, there can be no picture to
paint and no plan to follow. Set a realistic goal and a plan of attack.
Make your full effort with sticking to it! It always pays off!
Load up on good quality h2o: Not only does water keep you fuller
longer, it is also a natural diuretic. At times where we drink more
alcohol than normal, consume more than normal baking goods, it can’t
hurt to flush the body of all the sodium and toxins we ingest. Hello
water retention!
Avoid late night eating: An absolute no no! Parties and family
occasions can get you eating at later than normal times, so choose the
veggies tray, or choose nothing at all! Remember the word ‘willpower.’
It’s a numbers game: Calories in, calories out! If you do the crime
with eating extra calories, get prepared to do the time by burning it
off in the gym!
BYOT- Bring your own tray! When going to parties, if possible ask to
bring the fruit and veggie tray. Use hummus and low fat yogurt for
centre dips. You can’t do too much damage with fiber and protein!
Get Active! Get in the gym: Alone or with a workout partner, get
yourself into the gym! No excuses! Burn calories, increase your
metabolism and stay on track! Not motivated? Try a boot camp or group
ex class!
Make time instead of excuses: If you fail to plan, plan to fail. Plan things out, and make the time to get them done!
Let lifting weight with cardio intervals become your new best fat
burning friends: Using heavy weights with compound exercises burn major
calories. By adding in cardio intervals within the weights workout
offers a higher calorie burning effect. For even more calorie burn per
exercise, try integrated compound exercises i.e., squat + shoulder
press.
Always have your workout gear on hand or in the car: Try to incorporate
your workout before, during or after work. That extra trip home makes
it twice as hard to get back out of the house when it’s snowing and
blowing, dark and cold.
Bring the extra sweets to share with coworkers: Sugary gifts equal
extra calories, so try sharing with your workers and spare yourself
some extra calories to be burnt off!
Choose only 1 of the sins: It’s going to happen, empty calorie sins
presented on serving trays in multiple amounts. Limit yourself to one
or none at all! Desert, drinks, or chocolates, not all three! Remember
sweets, drinks and sugary treats consume high amounts of sugar… an easy
way to weight gain!
Remember it’s ok to slip: We are all human, and definitely not perfect!
If you find yourself falling off the wagon, do what it takes to get
back on track ASAP.
Invest in the best: Hire a professional! Coaches and nutritionists have
all the tools and resources that you will need in order to reach your
goals. Everyone can benefit from a good coach!

The Beach Body Workout

How to make that bikini work for you.
The aromas of fresh-cut grass and
smoky barbecue fill the air, along with the sounds of birds singing and
children laughing. Ah, it’s summer at last, and with it comes hot days,
sandy beaches, and refreshing swims … in a bikini. Most of us groan at
the thought of trying on last year’s swimsuits, only to find them
fitting a little more snug after a long, cold winter. Off to the gym we
go in a desperate attempt to get beach-ready.
After years of training and countless hours lifting weights trying to
sculpt a fit body, I watched in awe as a group of athletes jumped off a
bus, one after the other, with shapely shoulders and toned glutes. It
dawned on me: an athlete has a passion for sport. They play hard and
give one hundred per cent every game. Their training is consistent,
functional, intense. And, as a result, they just happen to have fit,
athletic bodies. It was then that I changed the way I train, and it was
then that I truly changed my body.
Skipping Rope.
Athletic training has become my passion, working out harder in less
time. It’s functional, you get fit, have more energy, run faster, bike
harder, sleep better, and the list goes on and on.
There
are many different ways of training effectively. The exercises you are
about to see are just a few examples of multi-muscle exercises. You
train more than one body part at a time, training harder and more
efficiently. Plus, you are going through your sets with intervals of
cardio, keeping your heart rate up and burning more calories.
And
guess what? These exercises can be done anywhere: your living room,
backyard, or the cabin at the lake. So breathe in that fresh summer
air, train hard, and have the rest of the day to enjoy the summer
sunshine!
Skipping Rope (One minute) (Calves and full body). Start by skipping rope for one minute.
Walking Lunge with a Twist.
> Walking Lunge with Twist (Twenty steps) (Glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves, and core). Skip rope one minute (rest).
Squat with a Front Raise.
Squat with Front Raise (Twenty steps) (Glutes, quads, core, shoulders). Skip rope one minute (rest).
Mountain Climbers.
Mountain Climbers (Thirty steps) Push-ups ten reps (shoulders, core, chest). Skip rope one minute (rest).
Plank with Alternating Dumbbell Row.
Plank (Hold for thirty seconds) Alternating
dumbbell row from plank position (shoulders, core, back, biceps). Skip
rope one minute (rest). Repeat rotation four times.

TALKING TO A LEGEND
— PAUL DILLETT
You
always go into an interview with a pro a little impressed, but when you
sit down with an icon such as Paul Dillett, it’s awe-inspiring. With a
career that started in 1991 and lasted into the new millennium, with
top placement in shows all over the world and a physique that can only
be described as “oh my god!”, he really does earn the title “legend.”
That legend continues to grow with his founding of the World
Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation. wbffshows.com.
TMT: Why did you start bodybuilding? Don’t tell me kids used to pick on you in school.
PD:
There was a guy who went to jail in my school, and came out as big as a
house and he was a bully, so I figured I should put on some pounds
myself.
TMT: You’re best known for your massive physique — you’re referred to as the “Original Freak.” How did you get so massive?
PD:
I guess it is one part hard work and one part genetics. I had the
desire to be the biggest and the best. My life was dedicated to my
training.
TMT: You’ve had a very long career. What have you enjoyed the most?
PD:
The best part of my career, I can say, was the travelling, meeting so
many people, and making people happy. I have been fortunate to see so
many parts of the world while doing something I love, bodybuilding.
TMT: Congratulations on your success with the WBFF. Why did you decide to start your own federation?
PD:
I felt there was a need for it. There was a need for someone who is
very passionate about the sport and cares about the athletes’
well-being. I feel athletes have been overlooked for years. As a
professional athlete, I know exactly what they go through, so I wanted
to do something for them to make a difference.
TMT:
You’ve really stirred up the competition scene in the past couple of
years with WBFF events. You’ve put a real focus on production values,
making your shows fun and entertaining. How did you manage to make
things so different?
PD: By thinking outside the box. My
vision is that bodybuilding can have a touch of Hollywood right here in
Canada. I want my events to be something that people look forward to
coming to.
TMT: Any final words?
PD:
The 2008 WBFF World Championship will be bigger and more exciting and
will offer more cash and prizes than any amateur show in North America.
I hope to see you all there.

We all know that legs are the HARDEST part of the female, or male body to train and dial in!
I am always on the hunt for new ways to tweak up my leg routine! I
love legs, and when they are trained right, they can definitely be my
strongest standpoint! This year i have had some ‘power’ exercises to
help me along the way! When i refer to ‘power’ I am simply referring
them to how powerful they are in my workout, not “powerlifting” style
of exercises!
So here we list off with my POWER 5 Resistance Exercises for SEXY, SCULPTED, SHOW STOPPING LEGS:
1. IRREGULAR LUNGES (Or Curtsy Lunges)
2. IRREGULAR SIDE STEP UPS
3. FEET HIGH LEG PRESS
4. WIDE LEG HACK SQUAT
5. LYING LEG CURL
Now those are just examples of a group of my favourite leg exercises that i would pair together in one workout!
I change up my leg workouts frequently because i am a creature of
variety! I get bored when I do the same workouts all the time!
Truthfully, I dont think i recreate the “exact” same work out anytime!
I think i’m safe to say I have never done the exact same workout twice!
Try doing that power 5 with no rest between exercises, repeating it
2-3 times in a circuit style. For people who gain leg muscle very
easily like myself, try throwing in 5 minute bike intervals in between
each circuit. For hardgainers, take some rest time in between
exercises, and maybe omit the bike intervals!
Always play around with your workouts… and remember… Do not let your leg workout get stale! Switch it up frequently!

Dieting, exercising and competing
Winnipeg fitness-model-in-training Amanda Lee is working to win
by Amanda Lefley (Volunteer)
Next
year, Winnipegger Amanda Lee will be travelling to B.C. to compete for
the championship in one of the World Bodybuilding Fitness Federation’s
(WBFF) largest competitions.
The 21-year-old, who is studying at the University of Manitoba to be
a registered dietician, currently works out in her spare time five days
a week, hoping to achieve her goal of one day becoming a professional
fitness model.
“It’s all about getting proper exposure and working with the right
people. So I’m on the right track, but I think I still need to keep
working hard and working on my image, and keep developing and keep
doing more competitions.”
Since starting her training with Contestprep.ca last February, Lee
has competed in two WBFF shows across Canada, specifically appearing in
the fitness and bikini categories.
According to WBFF’s website, contestants in the fitness category are
judged on their sense of style, poise and presence on stage, whereas in
the bikini category it is all about body shape and tone.
Training for these shows is hard work; as a result, Lee goes to the gym year-round.
“I work a five-day split. Each day of the week I work a different
part of my body,” she explained. “When getting down towards the show
you need a lean out. You start dieting about eight weeks out or twelve
weeks out, depending on what you have to lose. Then you just have a
strict diet to follow – a lot of protein. Coming up to the show ... I
manipulate carb load and carb deplete and water load and water deplete.
You take dietetics to make yourself look a little bit leaner.”
It’s kind of hard. My
boyfriend had to get used to it and I don’t drink when I’m training,
not that I drink a lot, but the social aspects change, you can’t go out
as much.
– Amanda Lee, fitness model
Dieting, exercising and training seems to have paid off for Lee.
At the Alberta championships she placed sixth in the bikini
category, but the highlight of her young career so far has been the
first time she stepped onto the stage.
“The first time I went on stage was kind of nerve-racking. But it’s
super fun to go out there and get all ready for it. Everything is just
exciting: it’s the cherry on the pie,” she said with a laugh.
Look for Lee’s picture when Inside Fitness’s top 100 hot and fit edition comes out in January.
She hopes that by continuing to compete in WBFF shows that she will
keep getting noticed and achieve her goal of becoming a fitness model.
“There is not a lot of understanding,” she explained. “It’s kind of
hard. My boyfriend had to get used to it and I don’t drink when I’m
training. Not that I drink a lot, but the social aspects change; you
can’t go out as much.”
