IUPUI is set to welcome both incoming freshmen and returning students to campus Tuesday, August 21st, at the 2007 New Student Welcome. Students will be greeted by university officials before being treated to food and entertainment.
The afternoon begins at 3 pm behind University Library by the fountain where Chancellor Charles R. Bantz and Executive Vice Chancellor Uday Sukhatme will welcome students to a new school year. Also speaking will be Spencer Harris, general manager of the Southport Meijer's. Harris and Meijer's have donated food and drinks to IUPUI for the picnic for a second straight year.
The picnic will begin at 3:30 and last until 5 pm. Food will be served while it lasts and complimentary picnic blankets will be provided by Indiana Members Credit Union.
This Story, a local indie-folk band, will headline an afternoon of music sponsored by JagRadio. The six piece band released their debut album, "Darling, it's War," last year through Indianapolis' Standard Recording Company. Recently returned from an East Coast tour that saw them perform at New York City's The Knitting Factory, the band has performed with national acts such as Cameron McGill, Sufjan Stevens collaborator Denison Witmer, and Lollapalooza-bound The Postmarks.
Also scheduled to perform is Real Game, a local hip hop act featuring Ron Gamble, an IUPUI student.
Prizes will be given away during the picnic, donated by IUPUI, Indianapolis Power and Light, McDonalds, Stone Creek, and Wal-Mart. Chartwells will also give students a coupon for use in their campus food court.

Okay, so it's hard to say that I know I've been awful and not keeping up the site here, but you know what? It's been a busy summer.
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm in the middle of a promotion at work which means I have twice as many hours as I had before, I've been going to concerts, buying a car, getting in an accident with said car, hosting themed parties, sleeping in tents, and doing whatever else it is that I've been doing.
Summer has gone by too fast, but I look forward to this semester. It's going to be full of things to keep me busy, make me learn, and most of all, keep me out of mischief.
Just to let you all know, starting this week I will be adding a new song to the site every week. The songs will be songs chosen by each of the people involved with JagRadio. Namely Ron, Josh, Andy and myself. [For now] We don't know what else is to come when the semester starts.
My song this week is called "In the Bag" by the Filibusters. The Filibusters are a band from my hometown here in Greenwood. It's a band composed of two young men, Eric Radoux and Andrew Seaman. Both attend College. Eric is involved with WIUX in Bloomington at IU, and Andrew is a student at a college in Pensacola. Let me know what you think, or go to their site and let them know!
Also, we're getting in contact with people to help with designing our jagradio.iupui.edu webpage. [If you coudln't tell, it needs a bit of help.]
You're going to start seeing changes, so if you've been bored with us, please... COME BACK!
Best, Jenna

May the end of summer bring a whole new beginning to JagRadio.
I've briefly talked to Andy about trying to get into the studio to put some stuff up on the station over the summer, but we don't know how far we can get with that yet.
Keep in touch. I haven't recieved any e-mails from bands that would like to be played on the station or anything.
Makes me kinda sad! Haha.
Anyway, enjoy summer and keep us in the know on what's going on with your band, shows, your music, whateffer!

Well, fall semester was tons of fun. We learned a lot, fought a lot, and got things going somewhat.
BUT
The summer will be void of JagRadio classes. Keep listening to the stream online, but don't expect programming yet. Be patient till fall, and bear with us. This could take a while.
I'm taking this into my own hands, because JagRadio is very important to me. If you have music you would like to submit to the JagRadio library, please contact me. My e-mail address is jrwoehlk@iupui.edu. I'm online at all hours of every day, so I will not miss an e-mail.
Keep in touch, let's get geared up for fall!

JagRadio gets the green light
by Josh Flynn Apr 4, 2007
IUPUI revives student radio station, debuts online
Jenna Woehlke, an IUPUI freshman journalism major, sat in class last fall when her professor began talking about JagRadio, the university's much maligned effort at college radio. "I had heard of it before," Woehlke says. "I was interested in getting it started back up, because I wanted to do something new."
The history of JagRadio is tumultuous. Student government presidential candidate Scott Plew planted the seeds in 2003, but the station wouldn't finally start broadcasting until 2005 — albeit, temporarily. Ben Racher and Jennifer Delaney led a staff comprised of fellow students with no faculty to oversee them. The university grew concerned as to who would replace them when they graduated, and the school of journalism volunteered to sponsor JagRadio. However, many students lost interest during the transition and the station fizzled out. For two years, JagRadio existed in name only.
Last November, Woehlke and fellow student Lindy Dobbins approached the journalism department about getting the station going again. A deal was reached: If Woehlke could generate interest in a class, the department would give JagRadio a second chance.
A small group of six students was enough to get the green light for the project and, last December, Mike Menke, one of the original JagRadio staff, received a call asking if he would teach a radio programming class. He agreed. Woehlke's efforts were successful, and when the spring 2007 semester began, JagRadio was back.
Menke set up the class to introduce students to Web-based radio programming and to teach them how to create content. Assignments include producing a Grammy preview show and conducting an in-studio interview. JagRadio is currently streaming music while the students learn the craft of radio production, but this summer the station will begin airing its own shows.
"A lot of online stations don't have actual radio programs like we will have," Woehlke says. Along with a diverse range of music, listeners can expect sport shows, educational content and various other types of programming.
"Anyone in Indianapolis who has an idea for a show can submit a demo for review," Menke says. "If you have a student producer, you don't have to be affiliated with IUPUI to do a show. I think it's important the community at large get involved and not just students."
JagRadio can be found at www.jagradio.iupui.edu. Queries regarding show ideas can be directed to Menke at mmenke@iupui.edu.

Students bring back campus radio with web broadcasts
IUPUI Sagamore 4.11.07 By Josh Flynn
Ever been curious about the Indiana music scene but didn't know where to start? Or does the phrase "Indiana music scene" take you by surprise? If the answer is yes to either question, then JagRadio, IUPUI's web-based student station, recommends you set this Saturday night aside for a trip to the Irving Theater, an all-ages venue where five Indianapolis bands will perform starting at 8 PM.
"It's a show that features several great local bands of various styles that do not normally play at all-ages venues," says Mike Menke, who teaches the JagRadio programming class. Scheduled to take the stage are Red Light Driver, Jorma and the Movie Bear, Eisenhower Field Day, Dorsey, and Scott Kline. "This show will give the under-21 crowd a chance to sample some of the talent that exists here in Indianapolis. They are also bands that are played on JagRadio."
JagRadio recently returned from a two year hiatus thanks to the efforts of freshman journalism major Jenna Woehlke, who last semester worked alongside the journalism department to arouse interest amongst students in reviving the station. In January, Menke began teaching Woehlke and four classmates how to create radio programming. While the students complete assignments such as producing a Grammy preview and learning how to do in-studio interviews, the station streams music from both local and national acts. This summer, they plan to broadcast original programming. Anyone is eligible to submit an idea for a show, as long as it's produced by one of the five students.
Along with the radio station, another class goal is to bring live music to campus. "I think having regularly scheduled shows will benefit the students by giving them something to do collectively on campus that is fun and free," says Menke, citing the frequent musical showcases held at other universities such as Ball State and IU-Bloomington as successful examples of what JagRadio wants to accomplish. "The hope is that JagRadio can help establish and maintain a good relationship between IUPUI, its students, and the Indiana music community at large." Several students in the class are currently trying to get permission from university officials to organize an on-campus JagRadio show by the end of the semester.
While JagRadio isn't sponsoring this Saturday's Irving Theater show, the students will be on hand to promote the station. "We will be next to the band merchandise table for people to sign-up on our e-mail/MySpace list and pick up a free JagRadio sticker," Menke explains.
The Irving Theater is located 5505 E. Washington Street. Admission is $6. JagRadio can be found at www.jagradio.iupui.com. Proposals for original programming can be sent to Mike Menke at mmenke@iupui.edu.

JagRadio by Sarah Frantsi
Jag Radio is still in its beginning stages, although it has been around for a long time. No stranger to determination, Jag Radio and all of those involved are giving it another try. This semester it is bigger and better than ever.
Jag Radio was run by volunteers until about two years ago. This was a problem because when these volunteers graduated, there was no one else to take over. The School of Journalism stepped in to lend a helping hand to solve this problem. They provided Jag Radio an academic home. They also gave it a status so they could generate revenue to support themselves. While it is a web-based station, there are still many aspects that go into running this program.
Maggie Hillery is the full-time academic advisor and oversees Jag Radio along with the Sagamore, IUPUI's very own newspaper. Hillery says "This has been a real pivotal semester for us." Hillery recognizes that the students at IUPUI are extremely busy and knows they may not have a lot of extra time.
Mike Menke has a big role in Jag Radio and helps keep it on track. He and five students in the Radio Programming class, J360, make Jag Radio one of their main priorities. Mike Menke is the Assistant General Manager as well as the professor of J360. He aids his students in putting together music and entertainment for Jag Radio. His class teaches the basics necessary to run a radio station. Some of these basics are learning to use the Macintosh program "Garage Band" and recording music.
Menke was the perfect candidate for this job. He has his own recording studio and is very involved with the music scene here in Indy. One of the main focuses of Jag Radio is music right now because he believes that is what people want. There are no rules for what type of music will be chosen however. Menke says "It could range from jazz to orchestral music to Indie rock."
He does not want to exclude any type of music, but he does want to keep the music fresh. Jag Radio will be an excellent way to hear music that would be hard to find anywhere else. This is just one of there many ways to encourage listeners to tune in. You can check out what Menke and his students have done so far by going to the Jag Radio website http://www.jagradio.iupui.edu. There are approximately 1,400 songs being streamed on this website that was collected about 2 years ago. All of these songs are accessible at this site.
Promotion is a very important aspect in reaching success of this web based station. One technique already mentioned is the fact that they offer different and new music. Another method in the works is offering all-ages shows featuring local and small-label national bands that are played on the radio station. These shows could bring in listeners who may have never heard of Jag Radio any other way. This is an excellent idea in involving the 18 to 20 year-olds on the campus.
Another way to network was created by Jenna Woehlke, a freshman in J360. She took the initiative to create a website on MySpace for Jag Radio. This website is www.myspace.com/jagradio. At this site, you can read about what is currently going on and see what the plans are for the future.
Woehlke is extremely involved in her class and wants to see Jag Radio become just as popular as the radio station at IU in Bloomington. She believes their biggest challenge will be getting a station and obtaining a fan base. While this is a big obstacle for Jag Radio, they have already put great efforts in overcoming it.
Another up and coming part of the program is Jag Talk. This portion of Jag Radio is an interview program. Bob Dittmer is the executive producer of Jag Talk. Virdiana Auger-Velez, a sophomore, is the host as well as a co-producer of the show. Rob Muller is also a co-producer and deals with all of the editing. He is in charge of putting all of the finishing touches to Velez's work. She, of course, is present during these editing sessions to give feed-back when necessary.
These three meet once a week to discuss their ideas and make sure everything is running smoothly. The ideas for who to interview are also brought up at these meetings. While there is no real criteria for who they select, there are a couple guidelines they all follow. The topic must be current, relative to the IUPUI community, and, newsworthy. Velez's most current interview with Faculty Council President Bart Ng can be found at www.sagamore.iupui.edu. You can also see other things she has done as well.
While this radio program has a lot of work ahead of them, they have accomplished much already. They already have two excellent programs running as we speak. Jag Radio has their audio streaming on their website and the students involved are working hard to keep up with the pace. Starting the J360 class was a proactive decision that will ensure this program is here to stay.
Plans are already underway to add more classes to the curriculum. Since there are classes, students will continue to come in. There is no worry about students graduating and there being no one else to take over. Jag Talk is already conducting their interviews and also has them available to hear on their website. Their weekly meetings will ensure that they will keep interviewing new people as well.
It seems as though Jag Radio is here to stay. The students involved take it very seriously and they have the best possible faculty members helping them out. Excellent progress has already been made and who knows what the future will hold for Jag Radio.

Although we are still in the process of developing our webpage and not ready to fully launch the site, we do now have streaming audio playing from our collection of over 1400 songs by local and regional artists that was collected about 2 years ago.
We will be adding to this list and working on the website over the next month or so, so expect to see changes as we develop the site. I will make announcements as we add to it.
Please check out the great music we already have up at:
http://jagradio.iupui.edu
From my understanding we are currently only able to stream through Windows Media Player, so Mac users may not be able to access the music yet. We are working on developing an open source stream that anyone can play on any computer.
Thank you for listening.
