We're very excited to welcome Sharon Bradley of Vancouver's Video Out Distribution, who has curated a program of Canadian queer shorts especially for our Mini-Entzaubert screening series.  It's a fantastic survey of the variety and diversity of queer Canadian DIY, including trans, lesbian, gay, First Nations, people of colour, and queer youth voices.

We open at 7pm, and the screening starts at 8pm.  As always, our screenings are free, but we're always happy to accept donations.  If the weather stays dry, we'll screen outdoors, so don't forget to wear something warm.  And if rains, don't worry, we'll move indoors. We'll also have a campfire, so please do join us for drinks, both hot and cold!

Artist Statement is a video Barrow created to describe, but also to parody, his personal approach to art making. The resulting auto-ethnography is not only an exploration into the filmmaker's transition from biological male to female, from Steven to Gwen, but also an emotionally charged account of the individual experiences and struggles her two sisters, mother, father, best friend and wife brought to Gwen's transition and their stakes in it. Under Haworth's sensitive eye, each stepping stone in the process of transitioning becomes an opportunity to explore the underlying assumptions about gender and sexuality which both we and her community hold.

The Project8 Film Collective is a group of small-format filmmakers who share skills of DIY
and hand-made filmmaking in the interest of developing a diverse community of local
independent filmmakers in Vancouver. Every year, the Project8 Film Collective runs a free
mentorship program for people who are interested in learning how to make a super8 film,
but have limited access to resources to do so ñ Super8 Boot Camp. This screening
represents work made by participants of the Boot Camp, the collective members, and work
thatís been screened at our annual festival.

In the spirit of DIY, where oneís own voice can be the ultimate in self-expression,

We will create a space for queer/feminist DIY cinema – you provide the films!

We are looking for films within or beyond these categories:

arty, punky, no-borders, anarchic, documentaries, porn, trashy, experimental, feminist, funny, serious, low-budget, no-budget, music, quality, concise, international, homo-socialist, homosexualist, revolutionary, polyamourous, monogamous, lazy, tranny-dyky, faggy, old, brand-new, provocative, difficult, hot …

we welcome films in any language – multiple language/subtitles are always appreciated. if that’s not possible, don’t worry!

Short film: National Erection, Israel 2007; a cocky anti-militarist ejaculation expressing pent-up penis-envy

Main feature: Paper Dolls, Israel, 2007; directed by Tomer Heymann, part diary and part human-interest story, Paper Dolls examines the lives of a group of transsexual Philippine immigrants who work as home attendants for elderly Israelis and also perform in Tel Aviv nightclubs. It also records the filmmaker's friendship with them, including his efforts to bring them to the attention of an influential club promoter.

20.00 Aliens under the Party Wagon Planet earth, 2007. Martian with English subtitles. Lo-fi, sci-fi romp in a chanel noir stylee, shot with gay abandon

 

20.30 Offside Iran , 2007. Farsi with English subtitles.

Women are not allowed into football stadiums in Iran so they dress as boys and try to get in. Think you'd get in no problem? So did these knallhart Tehran butches, but the cops caught them! The girls get their revenge in the end. A feature based on a real-life situation.

 

22.00 The Garden: Israel , 2006. Arabic/Hebrew with English subtitles. (This is NOT the Derek Jarman film of the same name!)

The 'garden' is the place in Tel Aviv where rent boys meet their clients. A powerful documentary showing the disturbing underside of the city and following the difficult lives of young men discriminated against from both sides of the conflict, with no way to survive except prostitution.
