Current mood:  grateful
Category: Music

Well, it's been a while since the last one here.

First off, we spent every weekend in June recording...OUR NEW RECORD! And yeah, it's been obvious with the new music up and all, but this is an official announcement. The songs (soon to be removed until it's released) are not mastered so the quality is not what it will be, but we ain't making excuses for it cause it rocks! Thanks goes to Black Lodge, Eric Graves (The Esoteric) and Ed Rose for the killer recording. We're in the process of mastering right now, so when that's done we'll have it packaged and in your cd player's in the next few weeks. We'll also be offering MP3's online as well. Be on the lookout for it.

Speaking of recording, we're going up to Black Lodge again this weekend for a yet to be announced surprise. It's completely kick ass, trust us.

Secondly, Locofest 2.

The all day show at the Cotillion couln't have been cooler or ran more smoothly. Tony knows how to run a stage. And a ton of thanks to Joe Roach for giving Gulch the opportunity to play it. If you missed Locofest, try not to do that again.

And finally third, Farmageddon 1.

Duane was fast asleep, dreaming of the BIG ROCK SHOW, when at 1:15 am he gets a phone call. Sound engineer extraordinaire, Jeff Corbett, calls to say he's broke down in Longview, Texas after doing a show there. Talk about a nightmare (with everything we were about to deal with, we were still better off than him...damn). In any case, as the overused saying goes, "the show must go on". And it did.

Marty (Star-Vu proprietor) wrangled a P.A. from this old cat named Stan (78 years old to be exact) and he also rounded up a goose-neck trailer as well. So it looked like a FARMageddon for sure. It reminded us Gulcher's of the old high school pasture parties we used to have, which was pretty cool.

The only thing that was the real issue was our scheduling. We are already planning Farmageddon 2 for the Summertime. We started earlier in the day, maybe too early as the first few band's didn't get much of a crowd (although there were a few hard core folks that managed to stand, in the blowing wind, ALL DAY. We were impressed. Which takes me back to Stan, that old man, hung all day with all of us and who knows if he ever sat down.

I'm sure a few bands were discouraged about the set up, but all of them didn't show it and rocked just the same. Thanks to all of you brothers!

And we need to thank Jason Taylor and Joel Nelson for being on-the-spot to help get things accomplished.

And to our "crew-chief" and man-at-arms, Jason, thank you very much for being the supremely-cool dude and hard worker that you are. YOU and Chad pulled this off.

There will be adjustments and surprises for Farmageddon 2 and every year after that.

Thanks goes to all of you who faced the blowing wind and long day for the love of rock.

And special thanks to all at the Star-Vu, you worked your asses off and should be applauded.

Gulch loves you and all the BCFC.

Current mood:  sore

For those that haven't heard yet, Chad Nulph has decided to leave Gulch. His last two shows are April 29th in Tulsa and May 7th in Wichita (see our show dates for more details). There are no hard feelings or fighting. He wants to live life. We support his decision and wish him the best in everything. As far as Gulch goes, it looks like we will finish writing and recording the album as a 3- piece. We will then try to find a replacement (more on that at a later time)  Here is a message from Chad's blog....

"In case you haven't heard, May 7th will be my last show with Gulch.

So the rumors don't get out of hand, I will let everyone know what is up.

-I was not fired.
-There was no big fight.
-Dean is not the asshole everyone thinks he is.
-I do love playing with these guys.
-My fiance did not make me quit. (in fact she was as surprised as the band was)
-I am getting married soon and I want to enjoy this fact to the fullest.
-Playing in a band has, for me, started feeling more like a job.
-I'm not looking to start/join another band. Maybe in a year or two.
-Dean, Duane, and Chad will continue being my friends and I will help them out when possible.
-To sum things up, I'm putting my family life first and want to take the time to establish a solid home life before getting back into being in a band full time.

I hope this will stop the stupid rumors from getting out of hand.

Here's to the fans, my friends, and my brothers in Gulch."

Thanks for everything,
Chad

Gulch cuts through mainstream

But does Gulch own the sound, or does the sound own Gulch?

BOOK 'EM: Dean Book has been part of the Wichita music scene for many years, first as a member of Hostility (with brother Duane) and now in Gulch.

METAL MANIACS: Chad Nulph of Gulch checks his strings during Friday night's gig at Key West. Gulch has released several albums over the past decade and has shared the stage with acts such as Clutch, Kyuss, Cathedral and everyone's favorite, Pissing Razors. Watch for a new Gulch CD to drop this year.

Gulch took the stage at Key West on Friday night at the hour of past midnight before an enthusiastic crowd comprised largely of men between the ages of 25 and 38. Playing a meaty American brand of heavy rock that pairs up the fast and stony elements of the thoroughly un-American Black Sabbath and mud flap boogie and bellow of southern rock, Gulch demonstrated itself as a still-vital unit, even with — or perhaps because of — more than a decade together.
The dual guitar attack of Chad Nulph and Dean Book (who doubles on vocals) stands at the forefront of each of the tunes; the riffs create a wall of heaviness that inspired a good share of the beer drinkers and hellraisers in attendance to try their hand at air guitar or throw their free fists in the air as the band worked through tunes such as "The Legend" and the closing "Quarters."
As a vocalist, Book's sometimes reminiscent of Clutch's Neil Fallon but perhaps with a little more rage and less of a sense that he spent time listening to a lot of Stax-Volt records in his youth. Book's lyrics probably also dive to deeper depths than those penned by some of his contemporaries. Although it's often hard to tell in live performance, titles such as "Watching Old Friends Die" and "Venom Of A Thousand Snakes" and the dramatic urgency with which he sang throughout the set it seems an almost absolute — when Book shouts/howls/sings a word like pain, you feel it.
Bassist Chad Norman was likely feeling some pain. And in a very real way. Having injured his right hand several days before the gig, he played with a cast, plucking out notes as best as he could with, like, two fingers. It worked, though he looked highly uncomfortable come the end of the night.
Drummer Duane Book provided some visual entertainment as he walloped his kit through pieces such as the crowd favorite "Enemy of Me" and "A Phone Call Away." He seems to come from a school of performers who believe that the guy at the back of the stage should be as entertaining as those at the front. And he was.
The greatest hurdle that Gulch may face at this point is convincing new listeners that it's not a throwback band. Remember, Gulch was making albums and taking names in the mid '90s, at a time when its gritty brand of rock was beginning to gain acceptance and proliferate and thus Book and Book and Co.'s place on that first wave is secure.
Still, twentysomethings just hitting the bars for the first time and experimenting with bands they don't hear on the radio may grapple with whether Gulch is doing something original or imitative. Then again, they might act on pure reflex and just shake their asses anyway. Time will tell and quartet's next record — likely to come out this year — will no doubt bring with it an interesting story and perhaps help in growing Gulch a wider and newer audience.
Longtime Gulch fans Lovell Hickman and Rex Harris were on hand with their own outfit The Sprawl, up for a middle slot on a bill that also included Order 66. With the addition of drummer Kyle Couch at the end of last year, the quartet has taken on a new vitality and full-throttle approach. Hickman draws deep inspiration from vintage Big Star and the earliest Wilco and maybe a little Badfinger and Creedence Clearwater Revival along the way. The point is that The Sprawl's vision of no-frills rock is a throwback to a bygone era, whether 1972 or 1994; it's not ornate, it's not fashionable but it has — and inspires — feeling and, on Friday night, even some dancing.
Bassist Ben Harvey and guitarist Harris have both increased their presence in recent months. Harvey takes lead vocals on a few tunes and offers a rockin' visual element, striking up maximum rock maneuvers and looking like a badass while he wields his axe; Harris now adds steel guitar to a few country-tinged tunes and has jelled more deeply with Hickman on guitar. Songs such as "Crestview Heights" and "Does It Break Your Heart" now have added meat that enhances their already memorable nature. The band's lost its almost dangerous predilection for being loud, allowing the vocals and Hickman's lyrics to come to the fore, two of the things that many at KW seemed to appreciate and no doubt one of the reasons the quartet went down so well out there.
Order 66 rounded out the bill and opened fire on a rather unsuspecting lot just a little after 10 p.m.
The outfit's raw and sometimes retro punk style isn't pretty and won't make you cuddle up closer to your gal but if you've ever felt like a freak/misfit the therapeutic violence that vocalist Nick Carter visits upon the audience during "White Trash Wal-Mart," "Incendiary" and "Identity Crisis" will make you feel like a freak/misfit who's just found a new freak/misfit with which to identify. It's music for those with high IQs, low self-esteem and zero respect for trends. Good times.
