thankyou to everyone who came along to the good ship last night to see me play. your presence was much appreciated. it was the first time i'd been to the venue and i liked it a lot. if it was in southend it'd be my local i reckon. apologies for not playing for very long, i had planned a set which i thought would be longer than it actually was. anyway, this is what i played:
song for the season nowadays we are so very different just like pigpen tattoo if you see her, give her hell i told him it was wrong my true geology is not stone but fear marty feldman eyes happy birthday, richard hell there's no smoke without you
in other news, the tumbledryer babies' christmas single, titled an xmas gift for you from the tumbledryer babies, is now available from bandcamp.com. it includes the christmas song song for the season as well as there's no smoke without you, it is free, and it is downloadable in pretty much any format you fancy. you can also stream the first four tumbledryer albums from this website and, for the first time, you can purchase the albums in digital format. each album is downloadable for just £1 (or more - you can name your own price if you want to support the cause). you can download individual tracks for 20 pence each, but to paraphrase enid coleslaw, individual tracks are really only for suckers who don't know the concept of value. also that 20p only covers the paypal fees so none of that money would go to me anyway. and £1 is very good value for an entire album i think. enjoy.
the current issue of noisy fanzine has good writeups of my gig at cobham lodge in february and the southend anti-folk gig in june. visit noisyzine.co.uk and order yourself a copy.
i need a logo. if you can draw or use a computer and would like to see your work adorn tumbledryer badges/stickers/flyers/cds, get in touch.
two gigs in southend next month - a beatles convention at the railway hotel and la belle et la beat on the day after boxing day. i will be playing three beatles songs (what with it being a beatles convention and all) at the former and my own songs at the latter.
new tumbledryer ep to be recorded in the new year - news on that to follow. see you at the railway.

hello october. as i have mentioned a few times previously, album number four (it is autumn now already) has been available since the second of this month. since i haven't had any gigs since the release date, and i haven't put it up for sale on the online shop, it hasn't really been available to anyone except those i know personally. i apologise for this and i shall put it up for sale online soon, i promise. maybe even in digital format if i can work out how to sell stuff on itunes and the like.
the next gig i have scheduled is at the good ship on kilburn high road (NW6) on the twenty-eighth of november. i am looking forward to it. it'd be great to see a lot of people there because tdb london appearances are considered quite rare. in fact, there has only ever been one sighting. you should come along as i will be debuting some new songs, plus i always get nervous treading virgin territory and could use the support.
i plan to make a couple of open mic appearances around southend in the lead up to the good ship gig, and i shall be playing at the beatles convention on the twentieth of december and at belle et la beat on the twenty-seventh so there will be a few chances to see some tumbledryer action in southend before the year is out.
i've been neglecting the live performances lately but i do enjoy it once i get over the nerves so i am looking for more gigs. get in touch if you want me to play at your venue/event/club night/whatever.
finally, there is a fundraiser for the southend fringe festival at chinnerys this thursday. it is a halloween gig so naturally it will be ideal if you fancy playing dressup, and the bands playing include greenleaf56, trash monroe, the fighting cocks and surfquake (a surf instrumental band who i'm very much looking forward to seeing). half eight doors, cheaper admission if you are in fancy dress and prizes for the best costume. and it's raising money for next year's fringe festival so it is all for a good cause! hopefully see you there.

firstly, you might like to know that my fourth and as-yet-untitled album will be available to the public from october the second. i thought that richard hell's sixtieth birthday would be an appropriate release date for an album containing a song called 'happy birthday, richard hell'... anyway, i just got home from playing bitterscene in chelmsford with my pet sushi and theoretical girl. it was great as expected; despite a lineup change (no guitar player) theoretical girl was even better than i had hoped she'd be, and she played my two favourite songs from her recently released debut album divided. and my pet sushi were great fun - punkier than i imagined, and very cool. i will definitely go and see them again. here is my setlist from the night:
pr machine dirty words & dusty corners marty feldman eyes if you see her, give her hell i told him it was wrong nowadays we are so very different my true geology is not stone but fear there's no smoke without you
many thanks to the bitterscene people for having me. earlier in the month i played at the borough hotel on southend seafront with dave woodcock, sophie burrows, wendy solomon and many others. it was good to see so many talented people on the same bill and i was happy to be a part of it. i played:
dirty words & dusty corners marty feldman eyes i told him it was wrong forget the past #6 nowadays we are so very different just like pigpen tattoo
finally, a couple of weeks ago daryl and i had a jam with vintage synth aficionados weirdgear. it was amazing - we had great fun doing it and the results are pretty damn good too. visit myspace.com/polarhula in the coming weeks if you want to hear the results
more news to follow.

argh, another month has flown by. i started july in a productive fashion, recording loads of songs for my as yet untitled fourth album in a very short space of time. progress was being made at an encouraging rate, so i decided my aim would be to get the whole thing done in less than the eleven days that it took to record my first album. annoyingly, as soon as i'd made that pledge to myself all manner of time consuming (yet necessary) chores starting rearing their heads. to date i have nine songs recorded and fourteen written for what is most probably going to be a fifteen song album and which probably won't be finished until mid august. such is life. i am quite pleased with some of the songs though, and i think it's going to be better than songs from the trade.
last night i played at the sunrooms open mic night as hosted by dave woodcock. i enjoyed it, it was great. i played a song from album four called nowadays we are so very different and i remembered the words and everything. here is the setlist:
dirty words & dusty corners marty feldman eyes i told him it was wrong if you see her, give her hell nowadays we are so very different just like pigpen tattoo my true geology is not stone but fear runaway
next i am playing at the borough hotel on the seafront. it will be on monday the third of august and the bakerlites and sophie burrows will also be playing. come along if you can.

this month has been southend fringe festival month! it started with the craft fair, at which mike and i ran a stall selling local band merch and some other stuff including my brother's paintings. the turnout wasn't that bad considering it was a little grey and hellishly windy; i think the torrential rain the previous day had put people off. still, i had a great time, there were enough people there to make the event worthwhile, and we got to chat to lots of people involved in the fringe in various capacities which was good.
next up for me was the vaudeville night at the kursaal. i ended up doing a solo set to open proceedings, which was nerve-wracking, but i am always appreciative of any gig i am offered. this night introduced me to the antics of mixomatosis, which made me very happy. also there was some poetry reading, wendy soloman played with dave woodcock, there was tap dancing from dance troupe delusion and a set by the voronas. all in all a varied and interesting night. here is my setlist:
now the geeks have a union if you see her, give her hell marty feldman eyes tattoo there's no smoke without you
for me, the big one was the anti-folk night at chinnerys because i organised it. we had breaking glass open the night which was great, the crowd really liked them (as did i). then it was the tumbledryer babies as a trio which i felt went down pretty well too. it's so nice having other people in the band. it means there are songs i can play now which i can't play on my own, and it means i have people to talk to and drink with. the fantastic charlot webster followed us - i can't rate her highly enough. if you aren't familiar with her music she is in my top friends so check her out. the legendary mj hibbett followed, with such fantastic songs as the peterborough all-saints' wide game team (group b) and it only works because you're here. lovely songs and a lovely man. to close the night we had local boys deferred sucess who were great. i got one of their cds at the end of the night and it has some really great songs on it - again, i highly recommend them so find them in my top friends. anyway, setlist:
pr machine for andrew ridgeley now the geeks have a union tell me what to do #1 hit song wasted time tired just like pigpen dirty words & dusty corners i told him it was wrong if you see her, give her hell marty feldman eyes tattoo there's no smoke without you
the following night (last night in fact) i went to cobham lodge to see theoretical girl as part of culture as a dare's fringe festival event. she was amazing as expected, and her band the equations were great too. great songs, great banter, great guitars, great clothes, the whole great package. support came from lucy o'driscoll, sophie burrows and the fancy dress party (woodham based arcade fire type megafolk(?)), all of whom are fairly local which is so reassuring in a putting-on-gigs-in-the-future sort of way. i hope to see all the bands i've encountered during the course of the fringe festival again soon. there is still a week of fringe left so check out the southend fringe website for details of what's still to come.

i played at the ship in leigh at the beginning of may with aquamarina, melodie group and yasmin samadi. it went quite well apart from when i tried playing my keyboard live for the first time which was a bit of a disaster. still, the other acts were all great and i'd like to say thanks to the belle et la bete people for letting me play. here is my setlist and a photograph from that night:

now the geeks have a union wasted time just like pigpen if you see her, give her hell borrowed tune #1 hit song oh, howard pr machine marty feldman eyes a little cloud my true geology is not stone but fear there's no smoke without you
a few days after that i saw devo perform q:are we not men? a:we are devo at the forum which was amazing. also i saw ben kweller live for the first time. that was great too. apart from these two gigs (and my own of course) i have had a pretty unexciting, unsatisfactory and draining month. in fact i had an emotionally crippling guitar tragedy - a hairline crack in the head of my guitar. the next morning it was a full on split. i felt sick for days, as though i'd punched a hole in a painting or something. it has now been taken to hastings to be fixed so i will have to use another bass for the foreseeable future. anyway, one welcome break from the tediumdrudgeryfinancialhardship came from preparing for the southend fringe festival, which starts with a craft fair in chalkwell park on the sixth of june. i am running a stall from which i'll be selling cds and other merchandise by many local bands. my third album comes out on the first of june and in lieu of gigs this craft fair will be the first place at which it will be available (you can get it from the online shop from the first of june, but it costs a little more). so come to my stall, browse, buy a couple of cds and support local musicians. incidentally, if you are in a band and you want me to sell your cds or tshirts or whatever, get in touch. it won't cost you anything - you get to keep all the money from your sales. if my stall isn't enough of a draw for you then you should know that there will be lots and lots of stalls selling/displaying/doing cool stuff. and there'll be a brass band. nice sunny saturday in june. and it's free. so please come. also i am putting on an anti-folk night at chinnery's as part of the fringe festival. this will include many great bands and charlot webster's mixtape exchange (full details in my gig listings bit) so come to that one as well if you can.
on saturday night we played at the spring anti-folk festival at the 12 bar on denmark street. i really enjoyed it, i felt that we played very well. i think my favourite was local girl saves planet. thanks to everyone who came along, it is much appreciated.
next blog will be post fringe festival, so expect an even longer entry.

hi. ... woah, they've change the blog layout on here! ... well, i've had almost three and a half thousand plays on this page now, which i'm pretty pleased about. last week i uploaded 'unkindness of ravens' from my second album and a full band version of 'there's no smoke without you', and now that tom lets us upload ten songs i'll add to that (including songs from my forthcoming album) shortly. anyway, please keep listening.
i just got back from playing at saks in southend with yasmin samadi, the brights and aristocrats (who had a great roackabilly/bluesy type song), all of whom were smashing. it was the first tumbledryer babies gig as a trio and i think it went pretty well. it's a shame there weren't more people there but a core bunch stuck about and that's good enough for me! also thanks to band for life for letting us play. you can read the setlist below, and i'll add pictures to myspace shortly. i have a gig at the ship on the second of may which i'm very much looking forward to. i will upload the flyer when i next have access to a scanner (i'm too cheap to get my own) but you should know in advance that the lineup is great. melodie group plus sarah russell plus loads more, it's exciting stuff so come along if you can. also i am playing day two of the spring antifolk festival. this will be at the twelve bar on denmark street on the twentythird of may. it's going to be fantastic fun. other bands on the bill include thee intolerable kidd and faceometer, and there will be many more acts throughout the night. visit antifolk.co.uk for some more information about the festival.
my third album, songs from the trade, is out in june. it was originally going to be three themed eps but instead i decided that i might as well put all the songs on one album but divide them into three alliterative parts: self, sound and show (what with showbusiness being a nice topic of discussion). it's not a critique of showbusiness or anything - i had already written a song about marty feldman and orson welles, and when i set about writing one about elizabeth montgomery i realised, "there's a theme emerging here...". simple as that. also this album is potentially notable for the absence of stylophone, but there is a vibraslap. this natty percussive instrument was bought for me by my drumming friend mike. it is something i've wanted ever since hearing tom waits use one on mule variations. i read somewhere that tom waits records his drums in his bathroom; my bathroom lacks the space (and, more importantly, the acoustics) to emulate that sound, but my vibraslap sounds pretty darn good to me.
on the sixth of june i'll be running a stall at the southend fringe festival craft fair, from which i will be selling band merchandise. if you want me to sell your cds/tshirts/whatever i'll happily do so and won't take anything for the privilege - i'll just sell it for whatever price you want it sold at, and after the craft fair i'll send you the money from the merch you sold along with any unsold stuff. if you're interested just send me a message.
on a related note, for the fringe festival i am organising an anti-folk night at chinnery's. acts performing on the night include the tumbledryer babies (obviously), charlot webster, deferred sucess and m j hibbett. it's going to be an amazing evening so please come along. i can't wait. admission is amazingly cheap at three pounds. you can buy a ticket on the door or pay in advance (see the link on my myspace page). and don't forget to bring along a mixtape for charlot webster's mixtape exchange!!
anyway, i hope to see you at the ship on the second of may. until then.

hi again. last night i played shangri-la at the railway hotel. amazingly it was the first time i'd been in the railway, yet alone played there. it is a very cool pub downstairs, with an upright piano and what i believed to be a beach boys greatest hits lp (i don't own any of their compilations so i couldn't tell you which one it was) playing in the background, and upstairs has really nice wallpaper, a grand piano and fairy lights. shangri-la is run by very cool and talented people. cusack opened and played an amazing version of femme fatale by the velvet underground, then tom burgess played a few songs which was great. i hadn't heard the peppermint apes before but they are a really strong rock n roll band with a touch of the coral about them. i liked their first song a lot. i gave a few of my songs their first outing; pr machine i wrote that afternoon but i remembered it ok as it is short; i had to abandon tired just after the intro because i realised there was no hope of me remembering all the words. i'll practice that song better for next time. nevertheless i had a great time as some of my favourite people were there to watch and all the music was great, and i got asked to do an encore which is always nice. thanks to the shangri-la people for letting me play, thanks to everyone who came and thanks to everyone who bought a cd (thanks cubed in one case) hope you enjoyed my set.

i began recording my next album leisurely on the fifth of february - in the last four weeks i recorded just two songs - but i intend to get busy with it as of now. i still have some writing to do for it so depending on how that goes it might be available by may. and hopefully you will be able to see the tumbledryer babies as a trio in a bar near you soon. i'll keep you posted obviously.

i played culture as a dare last night, it was great. cobham lodge is a quaint place; hard to imagine it as a music venue as you walk through the door, but once you get down to the basement it's cool. i think i played pretty well, and i gave 'wasted time' and 'marty feldman eyes' their live debut. after i played came rustic (a dinosaur jr/husker du-y trio) and a fantastic tender performance from tiger mcs. there was great music between the bands (low and scout niblett, awesome) and fairy cakes! culture as a dare really is a good night and i urge you all to go along to the next one.

my second album, songs from the tract, is now available from gigs and from my brand new online shop. it's better to get my albums from a gig because they are cheaper, plus you get to see me live! however, if you would rather stay home and you don't mind paying a little extra, the shop is there. i am playing shangri-la at the railway hotel in southend on the fifth of march which will be good fun. come if you can.
