Hi Blakers!

Blake has asked me to get all of you calling your local radio stations to request "How Many Words".  Some radio stations are playing it, but many are not.  It's up to us to get him some air time!  Don't annoy the DJ's by calling too often, but definitely make sure they know you want to hear "How Many Words"!

Radio contact info is below.

hey blakers!!

hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season. :)  last night's concert was amazing!!!  Haha as I'm writing this I just got a call from blake to go to lunch. J

When I first got  to  the venue there was an enormous line around the block.  I had to get in the back of the line. Boo!  Haha apparently I think I deserve to be in the front of the line.  When we finally got in there was a big crowd around a table and I could barely make out spiky blond hair.  Blake was signing autographs.  After he finished I was able to see him for a second as he was heading up the stairs to the bar where it was less crowded.  He grabbed my hand and pulled me up for a hug. There were a lot of people taking pictures and probably wondering who the tall girl was! Haha then I was pointing out my friend to blake in the crowd and waving at her. People probably were under the impression that I thought I was the first lady or something and was waving at the crowd.  Embarrassing!! I realized that no one knew I was waving at my friend, so I stopped.  Lol!

anyway, doxology and the mob law were awesome.  Such high energy and wonderful performances.  Then at 11pm blake finally got on the stage!  It was so great! The crowd went crazy and everyone was screaming.  In the short time since I saw them perform at Jingle Bell Bash they've gotten even better. It was very cool to see everyone singing along to his songs .  part of the way through the song Kevin (blake's drummer and lookalike!) said, "are there any Blaker Girls out there??" and everyone started screaming.  Blake said, "and Blakers!"  he didn't want the guys feeling left out! Lol. Then Blake said he wanted to say hi to his best friend Kristi who started the Blaker Girls. Awww!  My friend, Noreen, was with me and she started pointing at me and screaming, "THIS IS KRISTI!!!!".  It was really funny and then everyone was staring at me. Awkward. Hahah

I can't say enough about the show; it was so fun!  I'll post pics and vids later today.  Afterwards, I got to see blake for a few minutes after he came out to sign more autographs.  I can't tell you how weird it is to wait in line to see your friend. Bizarre!  I have no idea what I'm typing right now because I'm so tired!  I went to bed at 3am.  Hopefully this rambling makes sense.  Thanks to everyone who was able to come out and support blake!! Much love to Doxology, The Mob Law, Kevin, Johnny Nails, Jeremy, and Kent!!! Oh yeah, and blake!!!

Love you all!

BILLBOARD REVIEW

One can't help but proceed with caution when an album is named after Attention Deficit Disorder, especially when the artist caught his break by beatboxing on a reality TV show where he used to sing the praises of 311. But skeptics can relax: "American Idol" season six runner-up Blake Lewis' debut, "ADD: Audio Day Dream," is indeed a little all over the map, but, surprisingly, it works. Unlike other run-of-the-mill debuts from former "Idol" contests, "ADD" is packed with electro-funk jams, hip-hop beats and soaring ballads that explode with Lewis' personality and uniqueness. Taking cues from Justin Timberlake ("Break Anotha"), Erasure ("End of the World"), Prince ("She's Makin' Me Lose It") and the Police ("1,000 Miles"), Lewis gives fans plenty to get excited about here, even those with short attention spans. —Jill Menze

'American Idol' runner-up Blake Lewis looks to move beyond the show

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Blake Lewis checked an e-mail on his iPhone and gasped.

"Rough cut of the video!" he announced, and quickly a half-dozen 19 Entertainment employees gathered around a computer screen at the "American Idol" production company's slick offices above Sunset Boulevard.

Lewis watched himself singing in front of a wavy purplish background in the clip for "Break Anotha," the uptempo first single from his first album. "It's good!" somebody volunteered after the video played a second time.

"For a rough draft," Lewis muttered. "The effects could be more stylized at the beginning."

No, the 26-year-old beatboxer from Seattle is not another just-happy-to-be-here "American Idol" finalist. Given a long-awaited shot at a major label album release with his second-place finish (Jordin Sparks was the winner), he's trying to exercise as much artistic control as possible in the Simon Fuller-created machine.

He co-wrote all but one song on "Audio Day Dream," out Tuesday on Arista Records, and is already plotting a remix album to add hip-hop and electronica flavours that he favours but wasn't able to include.

"I just call myself a communicator. And all's I wanna do is communicate my art," he told The Associated Press. "And now with this album, I get to communicate myself wholeheartedly without any hiccups or speed bumps, like 'American Idol' has, you know?" Here, he dryly affects a TV announcer voice: "Theme weeks!"

Lewis got an early start on the love-hate relationship that "Idol" alumnus like Kelly Clarkson have had with the show and their post-"Idol" handlers.

The hate part, in fact, began before he considered auditioning. He found the singing contest flipping through channels several years ago and could only watch a few seconds of painfully off-tune crooning.

"I saw this, people that cannot perform, they're just standing there singing. The camera's zooming in and out and stuff. I'm like, 'Cool, the cameras are doing their job,"' Lewis told The Associated Press. "What's the artist doing? What's this dude who's been singing karaoke his whole life doing on this television show? So I turned it off immediately. I was disgusted. And I never watched it since."

Lewis beatboxed and sang for a living for more than four years after graduating from high school. When no record deal materialized, he began working construction to support his music habit. An only child, he converted his father's barn into a $30,000 studio, caulking windows and doing metal fabrication to pay off the loan. Under the name Bshorty, he looped his beatboxing and sang at regular weekday gigs at local venues.

Which brings us to the love part of his relationship with the show. In September 2006, a day after playing a show at the Triple Door club in downtown Seattle, he tried out for "Idol" at the urging of a friend. Lewis realized he could sell himself to 20 million to 30 million people every week. That potential audience was too tempting to pass up.

"The machine of 'American Idol' was great for me, because it was just too much fun for me," he said.

Like other musically experienced contestants (think Chris Daughtry), he made the show work for him - not the other way around.

"Idol" music director Rickey Minor said Lewis was more involved in creating his own take on the music than any other contestant Minor had worked with.

"He may not have been the most talented, but he was definitely the most progressive," Minor said. "His approach and his vision for what he wanted to project was clear from the start."

On "Audio Day Dream," what Lewis does in 16 tracks is, in his words, is "electro-break funky soul pop music." To get there, he enlisted the aid of hitmaker JR Rotem (on "What'cha Got 2 Lose?"), Fiona Apple collaborator Mike Elizondo (on "1,000 Miles") and Timbaland protege Ryan Tedder, frontman in the rock band OneRepublic. The album was recorded largely while Lewis was on the road this summer with the "Idol" tour, which he called "tedious and long."

"Gots To Get Her" is Lewis' most ready-for-radio single, borrowing and reforming Irving Berlin's "Puttin on the Ritz" melody to craft embarrassingly effective fluff.

The urban flavour seen in his "Idol" back-and-forth with Doug E. Fresh is in short supply on the CD. There's just one guest rapper, Lupe Fiasco, on the celebrity crush tune "Know My Name."

"I was hoping for more hip-hop flair. It comes down to the time thing and the release date," Lewis said. "I didn't get as much beatboxing on there as I wanted to. You know, next record. Me and Doug E. were trying to get together and get maybe Black Thought, Talib or Mos Def. I wanted to do like a cipher track."

Whether or not he gets to make that next record, Lewis feels he already has one leg up on fellow "Idol" alumnus, some of whom have disappeared from the pop scene after disappointing first-album sales.

"They didn't get to do their own album," he said. "They didn't write any of their own music. And a lot of people didn't really want mainstream success. Like Taylor Hicks, I don't think he really wanted success at all even though he got first on 'American Idol.' Katharine McPhee didn't get to make the album she wants."

Of "Audio Day Dream," he says: "I made the album I wanted to make. . . . I put all this hard work and creativity into this one piece. It was the right album at its time."

Blake Lewis' 'Audio Day Dream' is a wealth of styles

By GENE STOUT
P-I POP MUSIC CRITIC

"American Idol" Blake Lewis and American composer Irving Berlin (who wrote "White Christmas," "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "God Bless America") usually aren't mentioned in the same sentence.

But Lewis' highly anticipated debut album, "Audio Day Dream," which Arista Records releases Tuesday on its 19 Recordings label, features the high-flying, guitar- and horn-driven "Gots To Get Her," a song inspired by the Irving Berlin classic "Puttin' on the Ritz."

Lewis, the 26-year-old Redmond native who was a finalist on the sixth season of "American Idol," got permission from Berlin's publishing company to write his own lyrics and add verses. Lewis, the talented beatboxer also known as Bshorty, describes the song as "a roller coaster ride through some Latin-style, old-school jazz."

"I'm the first person in history to change the lyrics to 'Puttin' on the Ritz' and make it my own song," Lewis said in a recent interview from Hollywood, where he was doing interviews and preparing for the release of "Audio Day Dream."

The album's debut single, "Break Anotha," was recorded at Seattle's London Bridge Studio. He's in good company: Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam also have recorded albums there. Other songs were recorded in New York and Los Angeles. In a novel marketing twist, a stream of "Break Anotha" was released directly to fans by phone via the new social networking service SayNow on the same day it was released to radio.

Lewis worked with nearly a dozen producers and co-writers, among them David Hodges, Mike Elizondo, S*A*M* and Sluggo, Sean Hurley, BT, J.R. Rotem, Sam Watters and OneRepublic's Ryan "Alias" Tedder. Guest artists include Lupe Fiasco (featured on "Know My Name") and fellow "Idol" finalist Chris Richardson. Presiding over the recording project was industry mogul Clive Davis, chairman and chief executive officer of BMG Label Group.

"Audio Day Dream" (ADD) offers a whirlwind of styles: hip-hop, rock, pop, funk, soul and R&B, with an abundance of special effects. Lewis compares the amalgam of retro styles to a 1980s mix tape. He came up with the album's dramatic cover design of his face and profile, as well as a mini-poster inside that shows him surfing through a surreal, mountainous landscape.

Attention deficit disorder is an intentional motif in the album. "People thought I had ADD growing up," Lewis remembers.

He grew up in Bothell and Kenmore. Long before he became a star on "American Idol," he was playing at such Fremont clubs as ToST and Nectar Lounge. The record label isn't paying for a Seattle release party, so Lewis will try to put together his own show in the next week or two at one of his favorite clubs.

In the meantime, Lewis will join the lineup for the KISS 106.1 FM Jingle Bell Bash Tuesday at the Tacoma Dome (he also co-hosts a pre-concert show with Marcus D airing at 2 p.m.). Jingle Bell Bash features the Jonas Brothers, Timbaland (with special guests Keri Hilson, OneRepublic and Sebastian), Sean Kingston, Colbie Caillat and Ehpikh.

Over the phone, the personable, well-mannered beatboxer who calls Seattle home was passionate about his music and career -- and about the local music scene that supported him before "American Idol."

P-I: "Audio Day Dream" seems to be loaded with potential hits, from ballads to hip-hop songs. Are your expectations high?

Lewis: "I got to make the album I've always wanted. That's huge. I set high goals for myself. I don't tell anyone what they are. I'll tell them once I've reached them. I've done that my whole entire life. I put myself out in the universe, I put myself out there in a positive way."

After "Break Anotha," how will you decide which songs to release as singles?

"I definitely want singles that best represent me. I'm not going to say which one, but there's a song that I didn't necessarily want on the record. But I know the label people love it, and you have to deal with the corporate stuff at a major label."

Fellow "American Idol" Kelly Clarkson ran into trouble last summer when she refused label head Davis' offer of $10 million to delete five tracks and replace them with songs he would handpick. Did Davis ask for any changes on your album?

"On one song, he said, 'You should change this bridge because it doesn't sound like you.' He was right on a lot of things. And we compromised on a couple of things, but that's about it. He really didn't touch the record. He was just so into it. Which is huge because my whole dream was to be signed by Clive Davis, so I wasn't going to mess that up."

You recorded at studios in Seattle, New York and L.A. How many altogether?

"Oh, gosh, I couldn't tell you. For this album alone, I probably recorded in 20 different studios."

Why so many?

"I didn't want to do this album with just one producer. I'm so influenced by different people. And I wanted to get the best people. I worked with BT (a revered "trance" composer who has worked with the likes of Britney Spears, Tori Amos and David Bowie) on two tracks. He's one of my main inspirations ever. And the fact he came to me, to work with me, without knowing that I was even on 'American Idol' is amazing. He knew me as Bshorty. He got my number from a mutual friend."

"Gots To Get Her," inspired by the Irving Berlin song, gives new life to a tune that fans in their teens and 20s may not be familiar with.

"It's a fun track. I was very honored that the Berlin family let me do it. People have recorded the song so many times, but no one has changed the words. We don't get the publishing rights, but we got to have this piece of music on this record, which was huge to us. We put our egos aside."

Have you noticed increased interest in beatboxing since "American Idol"?

"I think so, with my fans at least. I see 5-year-olds with their moms and dads coming up to show me what they can do. It's awesome because they know what it is now. I think in the next 10 years you're going to see an increase in younger people who are killer beatboxers. I just hope they take the time to research it and check out these amazing people who inspired me. There are these amazing guys and girls in Europe, where it's such a respected art form. There are like 18-year-olds who could school me in beatboxing."

What's your perspective on "American Idol" now that it's behind you?

" 'American Idol' was great. I was scared in the beginning because I had never seen it before, and I was afraid it would take my artistic integrity out of the mix. But it did the opposite. I was forced to do other people's music, but I didn't mind because I just made it my own, arranged it myself and I had a lot of fun with it. I didn't take it seriously because I'm not a competitive person. I'm down to create. It launched my career out into the universe. What I want to do now is create music that I'm passionate about."

BLAKE LEWIS -- AUDIO DAY DREAM (19 Recordings/ Arista Records)

Bshorty's got a bombshell.

In one of the most anticipated album debuts of the season, the 26-year-old Bothell beatboxer who became a finalist on the sixth season of "American Idol" has pulled together a who's who of co-writers and producers. Executive producer was BMG label chief Clive Davis, who apparently didn't mess with the explosive blend of styles and special effects.

Aside from the debut single, the electro-funk tune "Break Anotha" (recorded at Seattle's London Bridge Studio), the album features several romantic power ballads sure to please the Coldplay crowd, as well as a bundle of frenzied tunes blending R&B, hip-hop, funk, soul, pop and rock. Fiasco, Lewis' own idol, is featured on the engaging hip-hop song "Know My Name." "Talk box" provides vocal effects (a la Roger Troutman of Zapp Band fame) on a powerful collaboration with Richardson, "What'cha Got 2 Lose?" And "Gots To Get Her" is a fascinating take on Irving Berlin's "Puttin' on the Ritz," with original lyrics and additional verses that add relevance for young listeners.

"Audio Day Dream" suffers from excessive use of special effects and electronic gimmicks, but the promising album is likely to produce several hits, taking Bshorty's career to new heights.

'American Idol' runner-up Blake Lewis does his thing on debut album

Much of bubbly Blake Lewis' screen time on "American Idol" was spent struggling to fit the roundedness of his motley mix-tape esthetic into square songs from mature artists. With the harsh reality of that reality TV competition behind him, this "Idol" second-place finisher is now liberated to enchant with his own "Audio Day Dream."

And he does - mostly.

The radio-friendly fantasy begins with some hip-hop stained songs that, at least musically, are as curiously pleasing as the blond boy wonder's streaky dye job. The album's lyrics, which seem like they're all directed at one woman (or several women, perhaps), are primitive yet passable for inoffensive pop.

Thanks to super-producers like Jonathan "J.R." Rotem and Ryan "Alias" Tedder, everything on "Audio Day Dream" is completely original. That's right. You won't find Lewis' bizarre rendition of The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" here, although he does successfully shoehorn baseline inspiration from Irving Berlin's "Puttin' on the Ritz" into the mega-charged "Gots to Get Her."

Lewis makes the best use of his skills - signature scatting on the break-up letter "How Many Words," infectious falsetto on the synthy "Surrender" and a penchant for oscillating arrangements on "What'cha Got 2 Lose," co-written by Rotem and Lewis' "Idol" B.F.F. Chris Richardson.

Surprisingly, the beatboxing that made Lewis stand out from the "Idol" crowd is simply splashed throughout the 14 songs and is only predominantly featured on one track, the unremarkable "Bshorty Grabs Mic!" Such a lack of spit might leave some Bshorty fans craving ma-ma-ma-ma-more.

Three snoozy ballads ("1000 Miles," "End of the World" and "I Got U") plague the second half of "Audio Day Dream," a wake-up call that the vocally limited Lewis is no vocally gifted Justin Timberlake. Maybe the Blakester should've pulled a Britney, Madonna or Gwen and just conjured a full-fledged dance record instead?

Weak downtempo songs aside, "Audio Day Dream" is the most exhilarating effort from an "Idol" runner-up yet.

Check out this track: Besides the joyfully aloof first single "Break Anotha," Lewis uses his best assets - that Robert Smith-silkiness and Freddie Mercury-showmanship - on "Hate 2 Love Her," a catchy tune sure to appease the tweens, grandmas and everyone in-between who simultaneously squealed while voting for him on "Idol."

Reviews: Blake Lewis "Audio Day Dream"
Glenn Gamboa
December 4, 2007

Blake Lewis' debut is like the hair on his well-coiffed head - shiny, stylish and meticulously assembled.

"Audio Day Dream" (RCA), despite its name, is painstakingly planned, as thoroughly thought out as a skyscraper and, generally, just as sturdy. Its foundation is the blue-eyed soul that propelled Lewis to the runner-up position on the last "American Idol" - equal parts Maroon 5 pop and Robin Thickesque R&B, with some of Justin Timberlake's more boy-bandish moments thrown in.

At his best, like with the infectious "My Hello," Lewis is pure pop star, especially when his voice drops to his lower register. He also does well with the first single "Break Anotha" and the playful "Know My Name," which features Lupe Fiasco.

Unfortunately, those songs only point out how there's not enough playfulness on the rest of "Audio Day Dream." Lewis' free-form beatboxing appears on only a handful of songs and the skit featuring his alter ego B Shorty falls flat, as do a bunch of the more generic love songs, mainly co-written with One Republic's Ryan Tedder.

He sounds too tightly wound, like he's more driven by a fear of failure than a quest for musical greatness. It's an understandable problem considering the pressure of delivering the album on time, but a little more daring and a lot more dreaming could have made "Audio Day Dream" so much better.

THE blockbuster commercial success of Chris Daughtry's debut album over the last year has undoubtedly helped get "American Idol" contestants' music taken seriously by the record-buying (or -downloading) public.

In at least one sense, though, "Daughtry's" multi-platinum sales have actually done a disservice to future "Idol" veterans. Now more than ever these young singers are expected to present a fully defined musical persona right out of the gate. Gone are the days of Kelly Clarkson, the first-season champ who only recently seems to have figured out what kind of records she wants to make.

You can hear evidence of that pressure -- as well as of the struggle against it -- all over Season 6 runner-up ..:namespace prefix = u1 />..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Blake Lewis' debut, "Audio Day Dream" (due Dec. 4). This might be the most breathlessly paced, detail-packed "Idol" outing yet; if Carrie Underwood hadn't already called her new sophomore set "Carnival Ride," Lewis could've used the title here.

As his performances on the show demonstrated, Lewis boasts a proudly eclectic creative sensibility: He appeared equally adept (and equally goofy) singing rock, pop and R&B; he also made it clear that in his view, there's no genre that can't be improved by a bit of beat-boxing. (One observer he failed to convince: Jon Bon Jovi, who infamously scowled through Lewis' overhaul of "You Give Love a Bad Name.")

On "Audio Day Dream" -- the title is a play on attention-deficit disorder -- Lewis tries hard to pack in everything he loves about music, flitting from Coldplay-style balladry ("Without You") to synthed-up electro-funk ("Break Anotha") to defanged hip-hop ("Know My Name," which features a cameo by Lupe Fiasco). He knows how narrow the window is for proving himself worthy of his audience's interest, so he's reimagined the debut album as a highlight reel.

Though it features input by industry heavyweights J.R. Rotem and Mike Elizondo, Lewis' principal collaborator on "Audio Day Dream" is songwriter and producer Ryan Tedder, whose band OneRepublic's "Apologize" (a collaboration with Timbaland) has ruled Top 40 radio this fall. Tedder and Lewis trick out their mercilessly catchy tunes with loads of delicious ear candy: In "Gots to Get Her," they layer a vocal melody inspired by "Puttin' on the Ritz" over fluttering acoustic guitars and triumphant R&B horns, while "Surrender" pairs grinding Depeche Mode keyboards with a pounding hard-rock beat.

In an interview last week, Lewis said his goal was to make a record that reflected his live show, which he's been performing since before his "Idol" stint and which features Lewis using a variety of pedals to construct intricate loops with which he accompanies himself. Yet what "Audio Day Dream" captures isn't the spontaneity or the scrappiness of a concert. Rather, with its dense soundscapes and sly stylistic juxtapositions, it foregrounds the exacting nature of studio work and image-building. Listening to this music, you don't think of a guy whirling around onstage -- you picture someone hunched over a mixing console in a windowless room.

That's no knock: "Idol" has produced several terrific vocalists, but it hasn't really yielded an artist as obsessed with sound as Lewis is. His singing on "Audio Day Dream" is fine; it gets the job done. Yet what arrests your ear are Lewis' ideas. With any luck, he'll get the opportunity to keep developing them.

Blake Lewis is ready to catch your panties
The 'Idol' runner-up came into the studio full of ideas for his album

With some "American Idol" finalists, it's hard not to get the feeling they just wanted to sing and be on TV. For them, actually recording music is just an afterthought. But last season's runner-up Blake Lewis is not that kind of "Idol."

When it came time to start making his debut album, the Washington-born beatbox virtuoso came to the table with CDs and notebooks full of ideas and a title he'd had in mind for years, "Audio Day Dream."

"I had discs that I made like four years ago that said 'Audio Day Dream sampler' on them," says Lewis whose infectious debut single, "Break Anotha" is currently climbing the charts. "So when I met with (19 Entertainment CEO) Simon Fuller and (BMG Label Group Chairman) Clive Davis, I came prepared. I had the whole idea laid out and I sold myself, like, 'This is what I want to do and I hope you like it,' and they did."

Lewis is hopeful that his fans will as well. "This is a new game for me," admits the 26-year-old singer, whose collaborators on "Audio Day Dream" include OneRepublic singer and red-hot producer Ryan Tedder and Lewis' "Idol" compatriot Chris Richardson. "I'm used to playing at my local club down the street and now I'm going to be on the radio that I haven't listened to in years. It's crazy."

Dennis Hensley: At the risk of sounding like a stalker, I stood behind you in line at my local taco stand, Paquito Mas, in North Hollywood like a month ago. You bought lunch for the guys you were with. I was impressed.

Blake Lewis: My band, yeah, of course. My homies. It's all about family love.

Hensley: You all seemed excited about what you were working on.

Lewis: Oh man, I can't wait to open that CD package for the first time. I always dreamed about working with musicians and producers that I love and it's coming to fruition with this project.

Hensley: You've described your CD as a modern take on an '80s–era mix tape. Do you make and give mix tapes to people?

Lewis: I used to be the king of the mix tape. I've made some compilations for ladies I was in relationships with but I haven't gotten a lot in return, maybe one or two.

Hensley: Do you still listen to them after the relationship is over?

Lewis: Not for a while. When it's a key song from a relationship, you're just like, "I can't hear that song right now… if I hear that song one more time…" You gotta wait.

Hensley: Do you have a favorite song on "Audio Day Dream"?

Lewis: The ballad "How Many Words." It's about the last relationship I was in. If you've ever had trouble being in a relationship, then getting out of it and getting back into it, you can relate. Man, I couldn't stop. I went back like 10 times.

Hensley: Do you have much time for a romantic life these days?

Lewis: I've definitely gone out and had some fun but it's hard to commit to someone because I'm really committed to my career right now.

Hensley: All my 40-something lady friends were obsessed with you on "Idol." Did you get propositioned by a lot of cougars?

Lewis: I got a little bit of that, some cougars definitely, some MILFs. I love older women so it was fantastic.

Hensley:</STRONG> What's the oddest thing a fan threw onstage at you?

Lewis: I finally got my first pair of panties and they were huge gigantic grandma panties. It was awesome. I don't know where they ended up. I think we threw them around on the tour bus that night.

Hensley: What was your favorite Blake Lewis sign from "American Idol"?

Lewis: I love the outrageous ones the most, because they're just hilarious, like "Blake Can Beat My Box" and "I Wanna See Blake's Snake" with a huge picture of a boa. I have a picture of that one.

..>..>..> ..> ..>..>..>..>
..>getCSS("3053751")..>
Hensley:
Speaking of pictures, there's a photo of you with Tom Cruise on your MySpace page. Are you two buds now?

Lewis: That was at Rupert Murdoch's house at the after party for "Idol Gives Back." We were there for like a half hour maybe and I was like, "Wow, Maverick's here (from 'Top Gun'). I gotta take a picture."

Hensley:  Does your talent for beatboxing ever come in handy in non-musical situations?

Lewis: I just make noise all the time, like during "Idol," we went to the "Price is Right" set and we were walking by the huge wheel and I spun it and I started doing the noise. And when it slowed down, I slowed down. Everyone freaked out because they thought it was turned on, which it wasn't. That was pretty fun.

Hensley:  You also have a background in comedy. Would you ever want to be on "Saturday Night Live"?

Lewis: Oh God, yes. It's probably my favorite television show of all time. Comedy's a big part of who I am. I've got some stuff that's going to come out soon on FunnyorDie.com. I have a fun time creating anything. It doesn't matter what it is. I love entertaining people and I hope I do that till the day I die.

"Idol" runner-up Lewis realizes "Dream"
By Gary Graff

DETROIT (Billboard) - Blake Lewis wants to be known as an artist and not just an "Idol" -- or, more accurately, an "American Idol" runner-up.

The 26-year-old Washington state native, who finished second to Jordin Sparks on the "Idol" sixth-season finale in May, takes great pride in being able to say, "I'm the first person, really, to have creative control coming off of 'American Idol' and making his own album." That includes co-writing 12 of the 13 tracks for his debut, "Audio Day Dream," due December 4 on 19 Entertainment/Arista.

Lewis worked on the set's first single, "Break Anotha," and "Gots to Get Her," which is based on Irving Berlin's "Puttin' on the Ritz." He also created specialized intros and outros for the songs.

"Being on 'American Idol' was the lottery ticket," Lewis said. "It's one of the most amazing experiences I'll never have again ever in my life. I'm not a big fan of television at all, but it's an amazing way of communicating with people. I tell people that all I was put on this earth to do is communicate my art to people, and what better way to do that (than) on 'American Idol."'

Lewis will make TV appearances throughout December, including on MTV's "TRL" and Fuse, as well as visiting major-market radio shows. The label is planning an equally heavy Internet advertising blitz along with special editions of the album for iTunes and Wal-Mart -- the latter of which will feature a 17-minute video special about Lewis' career and the making of "Audio Day Dream."

RCA Music Group senior vice president Aaron Borns expects Lewis to engage in some guerrilla-style marketing to help promote the album. "He's a young guy that likes spending time on the Internet and communicating with fans, posting videos on his Web site, all those things," Borns said. "He's all about sharing the process with his fans."

Lewis, meanwhile, said the most fun he has is making the music. "Audio Day Dream," he said, was "a blast" that allowed him to work with a "dream team." It included good pal Ryan "Alias" Tedder of red-hot band OneRepublic, who worked on eight of the tracks, as well as J.R. Rotem, BT, Mike Elizondo, David Hodges and S*A*M & Sluggo. Fellow "Idol" finalist Chris Richardson co-wrote the song "What'cha Got 2 Lose?" with Lewis and Rotem, and Lupe Fiasco guests on "Know My Name."

"I don't want to be put in a box," Lewis said. "If there's any box I could be put in, it's pop music. The surprise is that, hopefully, it's an album you've never heard before, but it's very pop and mainstream. I just go with my gut feeling and my instincts and intuition. I did that on the show, and that's how I approached (the album), too."

NEW YORK - The beatboxing runner-up from "American Idol" season 6, Blake Lewis, will release his debut album "Audio Day Dream," Dec. 4.

The spiky blond singer hooked up with a host of talent for the release including Lupe Fiasco and Blake's "Idol" pal Chris Richardson. He also worked with Ryan "Alias" Tedder of OneRepublic, who co-wrote with Lewis and Sam Watters, the album's first single "Break Anotha."

Tedder who alongside Timbaland currently has the number one song on the digital singles chart — "Apologize," co-wrote much of the material on Lewis' debut album with the "Idol" alum.

Tedder and the 26-year-old Lewis, were inspired by Taco's 1980s hit "Puttin' On The Ritz" for one of the album's tracks, "Gots To Get To Her."

Another interesting cut on the record? "Know My Name," which features Fiasco.

Britney Spears’ producer JR Rotem co-wrote and produced one of Lewis' album cuts, "What'cha Got 2 Lose?" which 22-year-old Richardson, also helped pen.

"This album is exactly how I wanted it to come out. It's like an '80s mix tape, with some hip-hop and electronic influences," Blake said. " I wanted to make a record where every song sounds like it could be on the radio, but my radio — 2000-'80s Blake radio is what I call it."

BOSTON GLOBE REVIEW

Over the top but still underwhelming

December 4, 2007

In his improbable run to the "American Idol" finals last year, Blake Lewis displayed a limited vocal range, an earnest likability, and progressive musical tendencies. On his debut, Lewis is engaging and diverse, but he also fails to excite or provoke. On the show, Lewis got by more on guile and style than to-die-for vocal chops, and his singing here is mostly underwhelming (thankfully he's minimized his beatboxing, which translates well only in performance).

Surprisingly, this is a very conventional pop record, and though he nods to hip-hop, there are few real deep-groove tracks. Lewis deserves a refund from the usually inspired Lupe Fiasco for his limp work on "Know My Name," while the heavily percussive white-boy funk of "Break Anotha" is more fizzle than sizzle - there's just no song there.

Mostly though, Lewis offers his take on various genres, whether it's Europop ("1000 Miles"), kinetic dance tracks ("She's Makin' Me Lose It"), or romantic balladry ("I Got U"). At times, he's much too derivative; "Hate 2 Love Her" is a Maroon 5 clone, and the swooning "How Many Words" sounds like Spandau Ballet in its heyday. There are also hints of Prince throughout: Too bad more of his audaciousness didn't rub off.

Despite these problems, Lewis defies the usual Velveeta approach to "Idol" debut records. As Amy Winehouse and Kelly Clarkson can attest, sometimes it takes two records to find your genuine voice. [Ken Capobianco]
