This weekend was fun, filled with so many adventures. I traveled down to the town of Galesburg, in central Illinois, to play a show at a family friend’s wine shop. It’s only about 3 hours or so from Chicago but it felt like a breeze since I slept the whole way.

I played 2 shows at Vintage’s in downtown Galesburg, one at night for a little wine reception and the other the next afternoon for brunch. The owner, Julie, moved to a new location not too long ago so I was privilege that she invited me out to the new shop…which was absolutely beautiful by the way!!  The crowd was great and we had an amazing turn out for Galesburg!! I actually sold out of cds, which was a bonus.

Probably the best part of the weekend was Julie’s farm! If you don’t know this by now I’m a huge animal lover and I was in heaven at the farm! After driving for about a half an hour out of Galesburg through what seemed to be pure darkness besides the headlights from our car. We pulled up a drive way and there was a house to my right and a few barns ahead. An adorable white cat with grey spots trotted up to the car, his name was Sir William. I was told the reason he got his name was he led about 20 to 25 cats over to the house from a neighbors that had left them when they moved.  He was the only cat that stood up to the dog Zeus that instinctively ran up and chased all the other cats away. Hence how he got his name, Sir William Wallace (from Braveheart).  He’s the only cat that allowed in the house since he holds his own around the dog.

After unpacking the car with the few things we had, Robert, Julie’s husband, took me in back to see the barn and all the animals that lived in it. I opened the barn door and the cutest kitten walked up to me. Her name was teacup and it couldn’t have been more perfect. A little tiny thing that was the friendliest outdoor cat I’ve ever seen. I picked her up and held her in my arms as I ventured around the rest of the barn.

Let me preface this next part:

So this past summer a bunch of baby Peakin ducks somehow ended up in our front yard. There were 5 of them and they couldn’t have been more than a few months old. There was no mother in sight so after feeding them my mom brought them down to Julie’s farm. Well they were not little baby ducks anymore. They were full grown Peakins. They were in a stall in the barn with a few chickens where they sleep at night. They seemed very happy.

As I walked through the rest of the barn I saw more chickens and a rooster but then 2 goats came in from the open door at the end. I guess they were miniature goats so they only came up to about my knee. Then a huge animal came to the edge of the door. Robert said, “Oh that’s just Lenny”. Lenny was a full-grown LAMA!!!! He had to be over 6 feet tall but I didn’t get very close to him. Unless you have food in your hand he really doesn’t like people that much.

I went into the other side of the barn to find like 15 cats. Some were very nice and let you pet them but others were a bit skittish.  I set teacup down to eat and headed back inside. They had a super hyper dog that was so much fun. He gave the best kisses ever…even when you didn’t really want them. The rest of the evening was just relaxing with all the cute animals around.

The next morning I was actually woken up rather early, not to my liking, even though I did get to take a nap later in the day. But I did get to do something I really never thought I would do. I got to shoot a GUN! It was only a small rifle but it was actually really fun. I could never get myself to shoot an animal with it but I did hit the pumpkin we were shooting at (it may have been on the 3rd try but I’ve been told that’s always the charm)!

We had to leave to head out to the wine shop for the brunch that I was playing at. I was a bit sad to leave the farm. I was having so much fun with all the animals. I wanted so badly to take Teacup, the adorable tabby kitten I was playing with all weekend, but I knew it wouldn’t be a good idea to have a 10 week old kitten in my arms for the three hour drive.

At the shop I played a few songs in the beginning of the brunch as people were coming in. My mother asked me 5 minutes before I went on if I knew any Christmas songs…I looked at her with a puzzled look and said ummm not really!! I fiddled around and learned a very interesting version of Jingle Bells (in about 5 minutes remember) that I played and it actually didn’t turn out that bad.

I had so much fun down in Galesburg. I hope I can get down there every few months to play again and of course get to play with all the animals! I think I would have been a good farm girl besides all the gross things like picking up poop. I’m not very good at those things…trust me…many people would agree.

I would love it if you could share your stories of being on the farm or even fun stories of animals. I love hearing stories from all of you.

XOXO

Wow I really found this on internet....

Have you ever thought that your cat really is evil, and is actively manipulating you to do it's bidding?

Science says that it is. Dr Karen McComb of the Centre for Mammal Vocal Communication Research at the University of Sussex has proof.

BBC News report spoke to Dr. McComb, who stated that it appears that cats "learn to dramatically exaggerate it when it proves effective in generating a response from humans." According to the same report, studies have found that a domestic cat's cries are similar to that of human babies, and that's a sound humans are highly sensitive to.

"The cry embedded within the purr" study was published in the journal Current Biology in July and claims that cats actually exploit humans into caring for them, especially when it comes to filling those food dishes. The abstract states that "even individuals with no experience of owning cats judged the 'solicitation' purrs to be more urgent. "

How long before someone synthesizes those sounds to control humans? I'd write more, but someone's dish is empty, and I feel compelled to fill it.

So it's mid november now and all I can think about is that Thanksgiving is coming up. It's a bit frightening that I'm already seeing brightly lit Christmas trees on the street and Christmas music playing while I'm attempting to buy a pair of shoes, but it just reminds me how much I love the holidays. I plan this holiday season to finally record a Christmas song. I've been trying to get around to it every time November rears it's snowy head but things end up coming up. Not this time...

Another thing I love about the holidays, besides the excuse to go shopping, is spending time with my family. I get so caught up with my music and shows I have coming up that I forget to stop and take a second to be thankful for everything I have and my great family. So this thanksgiving is going to be about spending time with my sometimes crazy but always entertaining family and eating as much turkey and sweet potatoes I can possibly fit in my little tummy!

So happy turkey day to all...well in a week or so but you get the point.

As I sit here watching all the great scary movies on TV, I realize how much I truly love this time of year. With the seasons changing, Halloween, and even getting an extra hour of sleep on a day I know I’m going to need it since it’s right after Halloween night. Lately I’ve been extremely inspired to photograph the beautiful leaves that have been falling this year. I love the reds, oranges, and yellows that coat the streets and sidewalks. One of my favorite memories as a child was after racking all the leaves I would run as fast I can and jump straight into a huge pile of leaves. It was so much fun but rather funny because I would then have to rack all the leaves up again. I didn’t care though.

So it’s Halloween tonight and I’ve really enjoyed seeing all the interesting costumes the past few days. My friend Patrick gave him self a black eye and put on a t-shirt with the letter P on it…he was a black eyed pea. I’ve seen a few people wearing a pig nose and wings being the swine flu. Although very politically incorrect, I did laugh.

This past week has been a lot of fun. Last Saturday I saw Dave Bazan at an amazing new venue in Lincoln Park called Lincoln Hall. It’s only been open a few weeks now, and besides having amazing sound, the place is absolutely beautiful. Then Monday I walked over to Park West and got to see Ingrid Michaelson. I haven’t laughed that hard in so long. She is such an amazing singer/songwriter plus super funny! Finally on Tuesday I got tickets to go see Kelly Clarkson. To tell you the truth I was more excited to see her opener Eric Hutchinson. He has killer stage presence and not only just beautiful melodies but sick lyrics to go with it. So great!!

Well I should throw on my costume and head out. I’m a flapper this year! I love it especially since I get to wear bright red lipstick. There is just something I love about bright red lips. I’ll post some pictures soon from all the crazy extravaganzas this week here on myspace and on facebook.

Always have hope

A few weeks ago a good friend called me and asked if I was available to play a few songs at a small party in Woodstock, IL. It was one of only a few weekends I had open, so I said “SURE! So what’s the party for?” He explained that his friend’s daughter, a beautiful 12-year-old girl named Hope Fuller had recently been diagnosed with stage 4 Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a very aggressive brain tumor. He told me that Hope was a talented young singer herself, and that she had been performing with her school choir and her hometown youth chorale. I asked if she had a favorite artist and he immediately replied Taylor Swift. He then explained that the family was going to need some help with medical expenses and a lot of prayers.

The next morning I woke up thinking how difficult it must be to learn you have an illness like this. I decided right then that I would do whatever I could to help raise some money for Hope and her family and I was also asking myself if there might be something I could do to make this young girl feel just a little better???

I picked up my guitar and opened my computer and started listening to a few songs from Taylor Swift’s new album Fearless. I had heard her songs many times on the radio and always thought they were kind of catchy and well written, but I had never sat down and I tried to learn one. I selected “You Belong With Me” and worked on it for most of the afternoon. By the time it was time to head out to the party, I felt pretty good about the guitar parts and the melody, but I was a little worried about remembering all the lyrics, so I printed them off and took them with me just in case.

The party was wonderful. There were a lot of people there and everyone made donations to Hope. It was held in a huge old red barn that sits behind this 100 year-old farmhouse that had been completely restored. The entrance of the barn was decorated with the “Delta” insignia from the movie Animal House, and the inside, I was told, doubles as an indoor motocross practice track. The drums and PA equipment were set up in the large loft area at the far end of the barn and the only way up there was to run up these steep ramps. At the bottom of the one ramp was a mattress standing upright on its end and sitting in front of the mattress was some kind of sled made out of a crate with skies bolted to the bottom. I’ll explain that later.

My friends in the band Friction played their first set which included this killer rocked-up version of The Mama’s and the Papa’s “California Dreaming.” They sounded amazing, and they really got everybody going. Shortly after they finished it was my turn. I played a few songs from my debut CD Are You Listening Now and then I did “You Belong With Me.” Everyone seemed to really enjoy my short set. When I finished, someone came up and asked me if they could by one of my CDs. I said of course, but when I checked my car, I realized that I had only brought four CDs with me and I had already given one to Hope. I sold one to the first person who had asked, but when a few more people started asking me for CDs, I decided to let Hope’s family auction the other two off. The auction was fun people were bidding and the price kept going up and up. In the end the CDs sold for $120.00 and $110.00. Hope’s family was very happy and I was so thrilled to help out in a small way. The party raised almost $1,200.00.

I was told that the main fundraiser for Hope will be held on Saturday, October 10th in Woodstock at a place called ODD FELLOWS at THE WAVERLY. I told Hope’s family that I would love to perform there as well, and they said YES! The show is ALL AGES! If you can come, please do! All proceeds will go directly to Hope’s family. If you can’t make it please try to help in any way you can. The family has asked for everyone to include her in their prayers. Your donations can be made at www.alwayshavehope.org.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and please help me spread the word.

BTW. I believe someone may have some very amusing pictures of me riding the crate-sled down the ramp and smashing into the mattress, but I haven’t seen them yet.

Current mood:  excited
To continue with my obsessive blogging lately...I actually have some killer news for you guys. Even better news if you like yogurt.

I was chosen to be one of the artist included in a rewards program for Gogurt. They only used 23 artists in the entire program and I believe I am the only independent artist included. Even crazier the other musicians involved are...

Aly and AJ
Boys Like Girls
Hannah Montana
David Archuleta
Demi Levato
Honor Society
Jennifer Hudson
Martina McBride
Plain White Tees
Jordin Sparks
Sean Kingston
and many more.

It felt kinda strange to see my name next to all those artist...I have to say I was a little taken back! Plus the site is really cool.

So getting back to the point (I have a tendency to get distracted for those who didn't know that). If you buy GoGurt you can go the website www.gogurt.com and download "All Mine" and "Everything I'll Be" by yours truly when you redeem your code on the GoGurt package.

Plus if your in the mood for fun upbeat tunes you can make your own play list on the site too. I'm jamming out to Aly and Aj covering a great classic "Walking on Sunshine".

Hope you guys get a chance to check it out and get some free music!

So to tell you guys the truth I’m at a loss for words right now. I’ve had a lot of crazy experiences lately but for some reason it’s difficult right now to put them all down. It’s a pretty rare experience to tell you the truth.  So I’m just going to give ya guys a brief update on the crazy live of the SVH.

 ....

Oh side note…I was thinking of going by “the von” but I’m going to leave the ridiculous nick names to the David Hasselhoff… or”the hoff” as he goes by now.

 ....

I’ve embarked on this new adventure of trying to eat healthy and I have to say it’s not very fun. I couldn’t tell you how much I could use a junior bacon cheeseburger right now but I want to start living a healthier life style. This will also include working out but I haven’t gotten that far quite yet.

 ....

I’ve been writing a lot lately as well. I just finished two songs. The first one is called “Holiday” that it a really fun rock tune. I was dancing in the studio when I was recording the vocals!! The second song is called “Fall in” that we are finishing up right now. It’s had a very sweet story to it. I will be debuting a lot of new material in October at the huge show I have coming up. I don’t have all the details yet but it will be one of the biggest shows I’ve ever played.

 ....

Besides the crummy weather we’ve had here in Chicago lately that’s about it from this end. I actually just had a gig cancelled this past Thursday because it was raining. No fun!! I get so excited before I play a show and to have it cancelled frustrates me. But so it goes.

 ....

Talk to you guys soon!!!!

Lollapalooza

 ....

This past week has been a world wind! Between playing 2 shows, going to Lollapalooza, and hanging out with some great friends that were in town for the amazing festival, I am officially exhausted. I’m at home currently in my pjs, eating some mac and cheese taking some well needed R&R. Don’t get me wrong I am not complaining at all for the crazy past week…I had more fun than I’ve had in a very long time!

 ....

Thursday we decided to do a bit of a lollapalooza pre party at Kingston Mines in Lincoln Park. I was lucky to get to hang out with my friend Geoff, who works for Converse, that was in town from Boston, as well as a bunch of his friends. It was a bit of a late night filled with some of Chicago’s greatest Blues! The great Joanna Connor was playing on the small stage! If you haven’t seen her play yet you have to check her out!

 ....

Friday morning I was in the studio recording a new song called “Holiday”.  I can’t wait to show you guys. The song shows how much I have grown as an artist since recording my first record and exemplifies the direction my music is headed in! But as soon as we were done I ran off to Lolla! I unfortunately missed Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears but Ben Folds made up for that. It shocks me how much great music is packed into one weekend. After Ben Folds I saw Fleet Foxes whose harmonies just make me melt. We got to escape the rain for a bit when we jumped over to the 2016 stage to check out Thievery Corporation. Thanks to Geoff we hung out in the Citi cabana for a bit and dried off. After that we head over to check out the end of Andrew Bird and ended the night with my favorite band of the entire weekend, Kings of Leon. Ever though it was so packed we could barely move they were fantastic. To think I had 2 more days left of killer music.

....

Saturday started a bit late due to some unfortunate circumstances involving my car but that is an entirely long and unrelated story. We missed the Arctic Monkeys unfortunately but we did get to check out Lekki Li who really impressed me. She has a killer stage presence that I haven’t seen before. Ben Harper rocked the Playstation stage and to top off a pretty eventful Saturday I went over to the Chicago 2016 stage and experienced the crazy live show of Tool. We ended back into the Citi Cabana so I had a killer view although I was mesmerized by the crazy videos they had.

 ....

Sunday was much less hectic than the last two but nonetheless it was a blast. I was so exhausted we ended up having a pretty easy day. We saw a bit of Dan Deacon who surprised me. I didn’t know much about his music but he really took control of the crowd. Vampire weekend was killer but my all time favorite of the day was Snoop Dog. Half of the crowd was just waiting to see the Killers but I was jumping up and down to all the old hits. We had to leave after Snoop but all in all if was a killer weekend. Sunburn and exhausted I now had to get ready for shows Monday and Tuesday.

 ....

Monday I drove down to Indianapolis to play with Gareth Asher and Miggs. My friend Ernie Halter was supposed to be there as well but he has to fly home to LA for something. The crowd was fun and I was really impressed by the guys. We played the following night in Chicago at Martyr’s. It was great show and a great way to end the craziest 6 days of my life. To make the entire experience full circle we all went out to Kingston Mines that night and I let Gareth and Miggs enjoy some killer blues music.

 ....

I hope you enjoyed my long blog. I didn’t really know a way to abridge such an eventful long weekend. Hopefully I’ll have some more crazy adventures to write about soon.

Oh I had to post these pictures of my best friends cat too. Parker is the goofiest cat I know and when I took these photos he was sleeping under the knives and then he decided to pose a bit for me. Too cute!

Sunday, August 02, 2009

So I have had an extremely busy last couple of months. Between playing a ton of great shows and flying all over, I’ve somehow been able to keep my sanity. In reality though I’m having the time of my life. I played up at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI July 1st and it could not have gone better. I’m proud to announce to everyone I am now sponsored by Sennheiser Pro Audio. I was privileged enough to play on Wednesday on the US Cellular Stage and after Sennheiser asked me to come back the next day to play an acoustic gig on their stage for a press conference and the revealing of their new SOUND TOUR. Check it all out at www.sennheisersoundtour.com. To top off a killer experience, I got the opportunity to see one of my idols perform, No Doubt with the great Gwen Stefani. I remember singing “I’m just a girl” in my bedroom with a hairbrush for a microphone. Oh yeah that’s right…luckily video cameras weren’t as accessible back then.

I have some great news for all of you guys as well. This past Thursday I filmed a music video for my next single “All Mine”. I don’t want to spoil anything but I will say I hope I didn't get any sand in my guitar!! More to come shortly…

XOXO
