Alter-Ego
Self Portrait as Your Porn Star Name

This will be in Feb., 2010, and will be a double exhibit, with 8 Shooters having the same theme the same night.

the idea is to get your porn star name:
1st name: your first pet
2nd name: is either using your mothers maiden name or the 1st street u lived on

now that you have your name (alter ego) you create a self portrait in whatever medium you like.
we are putting a "no penetration" clause in effect. :)

(Think Cindy Sherman, Bill Hayward's collaborative portraits, Miss Aniela)

This exhibit is being chaired by Sara Blair blairsara@yahoo.com and Denise Stewart-Sanabria dstewsan@aol.com

Get Back to Denise so she can get you on the list ASAP if you want to participate!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are also bringing in some outside people for this, also.

 "10"

Sara Blair wants to do this as a fundraiser THIS DEC., so quick feed back to her is priority:

"the plan will be for participants to make 10 of something.... sell them, 50% goes to artist, 50% to a1.
if it isn't 10-it can be 5-the point is to sell.

and donna moore is going to speak to john fairstein about doing a film showing."

5. Interesting New Stuff in Knoxville or Anywhere
 Joy Davis Workshop:
August 16, 1:30 - 4:30 pm
downstairs at the Emporium
$20

Dancer/choreographer/teacher, Joy Davis has just returned from a month's intensive study in the Netherlands with Dutch choreographer and originator of the Countertechnique*, Anouk Van Dijk. "The Countertechnique is the movement system Anouk developed over her 20 year career as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. The method focuses on both mental and physical aspects of dancing and strives to increase an overall awareness of many different levels that operate while dancing. The CT departs from all traditional methods that seek to control movement from the pelvis or 'core centre'. Replacing the static balance of these core centre approaches, CT uses three-dimensional counterdirections inside and outside the body to create a highly dynamic balance, enabling the dancer to execute extreme movements and to find more versatile ways of changing direction whilst moving."

Joy first studied with Anouk during the American Dance Festival at Duke University in 2005. She has continued to incorporate and draw inspiration from this method and has traveled to Amsterdam on three separate occasions to expand her understanding of the CT.

*This is not a Countertechnique workshop.

This workshop is open to any level dancer. Joy will integrate her knowledge of the Countertechnique with elements of both her own style of movement and improvisation. Please wear comfortable dance clothes, socks, and knee pads if so inclined.

“Face It: Contemporary Portraiture” includes paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, and digital artworks that deal with the human form as their primary subject matter.  Often overlooked in a world awash in digital cameras that instantly reproduce a subject’s likeness, portraiture is one of arts oldest traditions.  The artists selected for this exhibition  have found new and interesting ways of relating to their subjects through the process of creating their works.

The exhibition, which was organized by Three Flights Up will be hosted by the UT Downtown Gallery in their exhibition space.

A reception will held at UT Downtown Gallery on First Friday August 7 from 6-9pm.

The UT College of Veterinary Medicine recently unveiled a mural in their small animal receiving and waiting area in memoriam to Channon Christian, late UT student and Farragut HS graduate.  Designed and completed by Bobbie Crews in January, it is an 11' by 18' work on canvas representing the Smoky Mountains with waterfalls, stream, indigenous birds, animals, fish and vegetation.  The mural hangs in the social work area of the clinic and is open to the public.

Memphis Artist Exhibition at Rose Center

(Morristown, TN) Installation Art is an association between assembled objects with place and time. ‘Imprint’, mixed media works by Memphis artist Sara Good will be installed at Rose Center and displayed through the month of July. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, July 2nd from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in the Edith Davis Gallery.

Sara Good has been creating Installation Art for almost two decades and has been the recipient of numerous awards including Best of Sculpture, Arts in the Park Juried Exhibition in Memphis and Best of Show, 45th Spiva=2 0Annual Competition in Joplin, Missouri. She has had numerous exhibitions throughout the central US from Chicago to Louisiana including the Delta Axis Contemporary Arts Center in Chicago, the Burdette Gallery in Meridian, MS and the Turner Art Center Gallery in Shreveport, LA. Many of Sara’s public work, projects and installations, remain enduring parts of local communities such as ‘They Come and They Go’ at the Memphis State University and ‘Road God in Totem Form’ at the Eads Gallery Grounds in Eads, TN.

Rose Center is pleased to bring Sara Good, a high caliber artist, to its 2009 series demonstrating the application of non-conventional materials to the creation of art. Sara’s works expand perception of art to include the space into which the art is installed. ‘Installation’, is a process reflecting the intrinsic tensions and dichotomies which lie within the realm of expression using visual devices that provide opportunity to experience an exhibition. A sculptor such as Sara uses flora, found objects, memories and experience, created assemblages and a range of visual references to profoundly alter the viewer’s perception of art and space.

Knoxville Museum of Art Presents Art from the Ashes, a Community Exhibition and Silent Auction to Benefit Victims of the Recent Coal Ash Spill

June 2, 2009 (Knoxville, TN) – The Knoxville Museum of Arts presents Art from the Ashes in its Community Gallery through June 28, 2009.
The exhibition, which will culminate in a silent=2 0auction, includes a selection of objects donated by concerned artists and other individuals from across the country who want to help the families affected by last December’s coal ash spill in Kingston. The spill dumped 2.6 million cubic yards of the wet gray sludge about 400 acres six feet deep which left over 11 homes damaged and evacuated.
The exhibition organizers hope to raise money for the victims by featuring a variety of works ranging from original paintings and sculptures to photographic reproductions, prints and other items.  The works on display will be auctioned on Sunday, June 28, at 3pm with all proceeds going to the United Mountain Defense, a local environmental advocacy group whose mission includes raising funds to provide medical assistance for residents affected by the ash spill. For more information about UMD, please visit www.unitedmountaindefense.org.

The KMA Community Gallery is open to regional not-for-profit visual arts and cultural organizations.  Thi s outreach gallery is intended to create exhibition opportunities and increased visibility for area arts groups, and call attention to a wide variety of local creative talent.

Project Mission

"The Planet In Our Eyes" (The colour of our skin is different but we all see the same WORLD: united through PEACE!) created by Andra-Alida Baban of Baia Mare, Maramures, Romania for the 2004 Global Art Project exchange.

"What is my opinion about Global Art Project? Well it's the most wonderfull thing I ever did. You can't imagine how exciting is to finally know your match and share your own vision about global peace with that person.About my work, the painting represents a child, the simbol of the purity, which hopes for a united world and for a better one. He is the embodiment of all childrens of the world with all kinds of skin colour and colour of their eyes and hair.

I am one of those children and, like them I wish people would all be united through love and peace. This is the first time I participate in GAP but I'll make sure that it will not be the last time. Thank you for giving me this opportunity!!! With love and peace Andra (from Romania)
The mission of the Global Art Project is to joyously create a culture of peace through art. The Project spreads world peace by promoting tolerance and non-violence. The Global Art Project is an expression of the idea: We Are All One.

Project Description
Anyone can participate!

Participants create a work of art, in any medium, expressing their vision of global peace and goodwill. The art is displayed locally in each participant’s community. Global Art Project then organizes an international exchange by matching participants—group-to-group and individual-to-indi vidual. The exchange occurs April 23-30 biennially, resulting in thousands of people sending messages of Peace around the world at one time—visions of unity simultaneously encircle the Earth. The art is sent as a gift of global friendship and exhibited in the receiving community.
Participants may send documentation of the art created and of the people who came together to create the art to the GAP Art Bank. Global Art Project exhibitions, books, slide presentations, and this website give people an opportunity to experience visions of peace and unity created by individuals from diverse cultures around the world.
Let's All Join Hands is another element of the Global Art Project for Peace. People are invited to send a paper outline of their hand with their name, country, and wish for global peace, love, and friendship on it to the Global Art Project. The hands may be created and sent to GAP at any time. Volunteers in Tucson string the hands together as a visual expression of the thousands of people who join their energy together to create Peace. The paper hands are exhibited as a source of inspiration and a book of paper hands The Handbook for Peace is planned for publication.

How to Participate
First, register by sending your name, address, and donation ($15 US for individuals, $20 US for groups, if possible) to GAP postmarked by February 28, 2010. GAP will match you with a participant.
March 2010: Create a work of art expressing your personal vision of global peace and goodwill. The art may be in any medium -- visual or literary art, audio or videotapes/CDs of performances, etc. -- which can be sent from one group or individual to another. You may document your art and the people who created it to be included in the GAP Art Bank. Label the documentary material with name, address, medium and size. Send it to the GAP address. Materials will not be returned.
April 1-22, 2010: Display/share your work locally in your own community. This could be on the walls at work or school, in a hospital, a public library, gallery, bank, local café or restaurant -- wherever you feel comfortable sharing your vision. You may want to join together with a group of participants to find a place where you can display your work together.
April 23-30, 2010: Exchange your art with the person or group with whom you've been matched. The art you receive will be yours to keep, and likewise, the art you send off will be kept as a gift of global friendship. It would be nice to include a photo of yourself and a personal note.
Finally, as a completion of the Global Art Project for Peace exchange, you may choose to display the art which you've received so that people in your community have an opportunity to experience the diverse visions of global unity from around the world.

NEW!...Global Art Project Angel Corps
Folklife Handbook Now Available Online
NASHVILLE - - The Tennessee Arts Commission’s Folklife Program has announced the availability of the newly-updated and revised Handbook for Tennessee Folk Artists online. The handbook was first published in 1989, with a revised edition published in 1997. Recently the Commission published the third edition, containing updated information targeted toward the state’s talented folk artists. The third edition is now available in print form, but there was also a strong demand to have it placed online. The online version is full-color and is fully interactive, with many links and resources. To access the online version of the Handbook, (PDF)  Click Here.

How it works: If a person or group hasn't heard from thei r GAP exchange partner by the end of June, they could contact us and we'll connect them with a group or individual in the Angel Corps who will send them artwork. People may register to participate in either the exchange, the Angel Corps…or both. Angel Corps participants are angels because they will create and send art, although they know they won't receive anything from the person or group to whom they're sending their art...it's purely an act of love and generosity.
To participate in the Angel Corps
, fill out a separate GAP registration form but write “Angel Corps” on it with a highlighter. We’ll contact you after June to let you know where to send your art. No fee is required to participate in the Angel Corps.

Call to artists: 8 Shooters Studio YART Sale, June 5
Looking for artists to participate and helping artists who have a stockpile of works to get rid of it.  You would bring your goods to 8 Shooters Studio (1202 N. Central Street, Knoxville, TN 37917) on Thursday, June 4 to help set up.  We would also appreciate you being at the show/sale to discuss your art and direct patrons to the studio staff for sales transactions.  The Studio will keep 20% of all sales and issue you a check for the difference the following week.  For information, contact Tovah Greenwood at tovah_love@yahoo.com.
Call to Artists- who might be willing to help me implement a new art curriculum at my agency? I work for Telamon Corporation, a non-profit that operates Migrant and Seasonal Head Start centers for the children of migrant farm workers in rural areas across the state. Their parents pick about 80% of all the produce we consume.

This summer we will be implementing an art c urriculum with the migrant pre-schoolers called "Picturing America". I am looking for an artist who can work with me to plan and conduct a training for our staff in Knoxville on June 24th from 1:00-3:00pm. I am also recruiting artists who would be willing to come out to our Head Start centers a few times this summer to do some art activities with the children. For more information on Picturing America, see the following websites:

Unfortunately, we cannot offer a stipend. This is strictly voluntary, but the artist would be helping some of our nation's most vulnerable children. The centers are located in Bledsoe, Cocke, Greene and Unicoi Counties. The artists can ride with us in the company car, so they wouldn't have to pay for gas.

If anyone is interested please email me at jcrowe@telamon.org or call me at (919) 747-7895.
Thank you,
Jane Crowe

UT Knoxville Hosts Japanese Exhibit, Artists

KNOXVILLE – International learning and art will be center stage when a 320-piece artwork exhibit and a group of Japanese artists arrive at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, this week.

Traditional and contemporary Japanese ceramics, calligraphy and paintings will be on display beginning Friday through July 2 at the Ewing Gallery and the Ewing Gallery Annex, both in the Art + Architecture Building, and the university's

A reception welcoming the artists will be held at the Ewing Gallery, at which the visiting artists will present the university with a sculpture.

The works were created by 300 artists from the Japan International Artists Society (JIAS), an organization which travels the globe exhibiting artwork to increase cultural awareness and understanding.

"The Japan International Artists Society members have traveled far to share with us their works of art, and we are honored to host their visit and share their work with our community."

Twenty-eight of the JIAS artists will visit UT Knoxville. For most of them, this will be the first time their work has been exhibited in the United States. A group of JIAS members last visited Knoxville 20 years ago. Throughout their 25-year history, member exhibitions have been held in Cuba, Spain, China, Canada, France and Russia.

Two engineers are traveling from Japan to construct the artwork in the north courtyard of the Art + Architecture Building.
