THE BRASS BED Save Your Breath (BAR HUM BUG)

People who believe that the music industry moves at a blinding pace should be alerted that The Brass Bed released their Save Your Breath album in 2001. Now, six years hence comes the visual accompaniment, even though it was copyrighted in 2002. Who won the race then? The tortoise or the snail?
In any event, this project is all very artistic and "underground". Filmed mostly using Super 8 film and using some recordings captured on 4 track. Talk about keeping it real. There are some dozen directors who have prepared the 17 videos and the overriding impression is that most of the filmmakers used the opportunity to create work suitable for their film school or video art folio oeuvre.
Because the music of The Brass Bed flickers along in a jazz vein, charting territory in a parallel no-wave way to James Chance, it lends itself to fast-paced, grainy and often non-descript visuals which often use the medium in a volatile way. There is a distinct policy of encouraging the DIY principles and a good avenue for those who may not normally have the financial wherewithal to communicate their ideas to a wider audience. What the audience can expect is a visual montage of Melbourne images circa late 1990's, lots of interiors and very few of what could be termed conventional videos.
The band itself only appear in a couple of the works, so Save Your Breath could be regarded as merely a collection of moving image work with The Brass Bed providing background muzak. The immediacy is captured well and the fertility of work being done by visual artists who endeavour to create images that are to become the visual equivalents of what we hear.
And it just proves how superior Super 8 filming can be to many of the modern video clip techniques.
