Let’s hope they don’t ape Motörhead too much

With a name like the Hells Fire Sinners and a mailing address in Central Ohio, you can probably guess what their latest album, Confessions of the Damned, sounds like.

Take the twangy, rockabilly roots rock favored by the alt-country crowd in this town, and mix liberally with both the cartoonish monster-movie horror of the Misfits and the jagged punk of Social Distortion, omitting the Johnny Cash worship and teenage angst, and you’re pretty much on point.

If this is up your alley, you’re going to enjoy Confessions of the Damned. From the outset, the album is rip-roaring fun, running country and rockabilly traditionalism through the meat grinder in a moonshine-fueled massacre of raging punkabilly, scratching an itch nearly forgotten since A Planet for Texas went AWOL.

If this album is any indication, you can expect the band to begin shedding some of the hillbilly-isms as the louder, faster ethos that now seems to be an undercurrent propels it further and further into the Motörhead end of the devil’s music.

But only so much, let’s hope. Vocalist and primary songwriter Alan Downing’s country-fried voice cracks and breaks like Mr. Haney’s from Green Acres, which is quite endearing, especially when he’s singing about killing zombies. So maybe the Hells Fire Sinners are right where they need to be.

Al & The Black Cats - Ravari Room, Columbus OH 3-27-09

Another great show at the Ravari room, this
time an eclectic triple bill featuring punk-infused bluegrass and
decent psychobilly.  Here’s how it shook out;
Hellsfire Sinners
- were first up and played a great full set of their unusual mixture of
bluegrass, country, punk with a touch of metal thrown in for good
measure.  This is the second time I’ve seen Alan Dude & Co. perform
live, this particular outing going off without the technical issues
from before (thankfully!).  High energy drinkin’ music (as I like to
think of it) was performed flawlessly and included all my favs -
‘Psycho’, ‘99′, ‘Piss on You’, ‘Zombie Killer’ and ‘Ain’t Comin’ Home’
- the later I’d never heard live before, so that was a thrill.  Great
stuff!
Next up were the psychobilly lunatics out of Queens, The Arkhams
-who get bonus points for being named after the fictional city created
by one of my all-time favorite writers, H. P. Lovecraft.  But I doubt
even Lovecraft’s fertile imagination could’ve thought up this
concoction of 60’s surf rock and macabre punk - think Dick Dale meets
The Misfits.  Guitarist Bobcat Arkham was a fretburner possessed,
alongside drummer Seanzi Dirtbag,  second guitarist Johnny Beernuts and
mad scientist on the upright bass, Matt the Knife.  Well crafted songs,
most centering around insanity (which I can dig), included ‘Insane’,
‘Bad Luck”, ‘Next Time You See Me’ and my personal fav, the very catchy
‘Hell Is Where All The Good Records Are’.
Last & loudest, Michigan’s own Al & The Black Cats -
who interestingly enough, perform sans Al these days. No matter, this
is a heavy duty threesome that nicely marry heavy metal with
rockabilly, even performing an excellent cover of Motorhead’s
“Overkill’ as part of their set!  Singer/bassist Eric Soules (The ‘Les
Claypool of Upright Bass’), fierce stringmeister Tony Cozzaglio on
guitar and Hugh Skiffington on drums are guaranteed to enthrall even my
metal loving brethern with their chunky rhythms & full-on stage
intensity.  Seriously, I had intended to bail early but found I
couldn’t leave because of the powerful performance these guys were
serving up - walking on the bar,  flalling around the stage like caged
demons - big fun!
I would definitely recommend any of these acts if they come to your
area as they all put their souls on the stage.  Below is a Youtube
video of Al & The Black Cats ‘The Light Hit Her Eyes’ to give you a
taste.  Check’em out!

Hells Fire Sinners
Confessions of the Damned

I don’t even remember how we stumbled across these guys, but finding the HFS was the equivalent of finding a pristine, vintage beer cooler stuffed with porn DVDs, liquor and cigarettes packed securely with $100 bills.

This band of degenerates hail from Columbus, OH and bring with them a deadly cocktail of almost indescribable mix of hellbilly and honky tonk.  When the first fiery lick of Ninety Nine hits, singer/guitaritst Alan Dude’s unique twang flows into the track after a nitro-fueled jumpstart where drummer Josh Hewitt and bassist Andy Neff join him in crafting this deadly song together.  The suicidal death ride that is Ninety Nine is a pounding prayer to death on the road.

One of the things I love most about the HFS is their ability to shift gears in the middle of the road and reel in the hellbilly and turn it into honky tonk with the strum of a guitar.  A Little Gone A Little Crazy, is toe-tapping self-awareness track paying tribute to drinking & partying and not making excuse to those who look down on you.

The album’s favorite track for me (and everyone else soon enough) is Piss On You.  This honky tonk revival is a punch in the face about being proud of whom you are.  “I use the lord’s name in vain, I ain’t never been a saint, and motherfuckers, neither have you,” Dude exclaims in a southern drawl that encompasses the good ol’ time lifestyle.  This song has become a sing-a-long in my house and a sold out concert in my mind as I recite the ultra funny lyrics driving (too fast) down the road.

Almighty Dollar rings up as an upbeat, boot-tapping and very catchy song about living they way you should not.  “If you don’t like the way I am, step aside and get the fuck out the way,” Dude threatens.  Damn Our Souls cries in next as the albums namesake (of sorts).  This downtrodden, give-up give-in look at life is also a fav of mine.  Dude’s antique twang makes this song sound like an old gospel prayer as much as it does a verse out of the satanic bible.  This is a kick ass song that makes you sing along, yet makes you feel bad for singing along... ..

It’s been a long time since a band’s album has moved me and made it into rotation of my favorite bands.  This is one of those albums.  We loved it so much that we invited them to play the Rockabilly BBQ on June 6th, 2009.

The Thick Of It picks in bringing up the pace once again.  “I’m in the thick of it, I’m in the thick of all this shit,” Dude yells as the rhythm boys hammer down the lid of another kick-ass track about being mixed up in all the bullshit that is life.

The last two tracks sadly come into play as Real Men pays tribute to all the bad-asses we avoid, again with the classic county twang on methamphetamines chased with downers and liquor, while Zombie Killer does the same, only they are undead and less downers.

You HAVE to get this CD!  This band kicks ass like one we have needed for a long time.  Pick up a copy of Confessions of the Damned at www.myspace.com/hfsinners.  AND DO NOT MISS THEM AT THIS YEAR’S BBQ!.. ......

At Comfest this year, while waiting in the beer line (WHERE ELSE WOULD I BE!?), I met a dude named aptly - Alan Dude.  He told me about his band which mixed Bluegrass, Country & Punk (!!) called the Hells Fire Sinners.   Well, since that time I've always meant to catch the boys in concert.  Friday they had a CD release party at the Ravari room, so I checked it out.
  Here was the line-up;

The Narcota - Only second live show ever for these guys but to tell ya' the truth, you really couldn't tell. Good rock n' roll with plenty of sweat & attitude. Singer Shawdalicious (it's what the Myspace says - so I'm puttin' it here) has some serious pipes, reminding me in a bizarre way of Nina Hagen.  Guitarists Denver & Clint jammed out while channeling some serious Angus Young.  Good bar band which will be interesting to see develop as an ensemble.

Next up was country riotgrl Lydia Loveless, who like every other band on the bill was a hybrid of multiple genres - in her case Folk, Modern Country with a smattering of hard-edged rock n' roll attitude. Think Jewel, but pissed off and drinking beers.  Accompanied by only a drummer, Lydia sang & played acoustic guitar but don't be fooled - she rocked it out like a 6 piece.  Almost turned the dance floor into a pit.  Very good stuff.

Following Lydia was the Psychobilly trio known as Vegas 66.  I love good surf & rockabilly, and these guys could serve it up!   Tight and well-honed musically - Jimmy, Jeremy & Rex Vegas filled the front of the stage with dancing maniacs while they took no prisoners with guitar driven tuneage reminiscent of Reverend Horton Heat or the Stray Cats.
I especially liked the vintage gear, it's not everyday you see a 'slap bass' with racing flames down the side or a leopard-skin drumkit - very cool!

In the wee hours of the night, and despite a few technical problems that had plaqued the show all evening,  the Hells Fire Sinners kicked it in [Picture stolen from their Myspace].  As a metalhead, this might not be the band you would expect me to dig but I gotta tell ya' - they have a unique sound all their own; one part mud stompin' shitkicker, one part bluegrass harmony.  Another three piece, they consist of singer/guitarist Alan Dude, upright bassist Frank Shepherd & drummer Josh Hewitt.   Songs included 'Psycho' (probably my current fav), '99′, 'Real Men', 'Thick of It', 'Almighty Dollar' and the classic 'Zombie Killer'.  Hey, what other band dares to play Bluegrass, Punk AND sing about killing zombies!?  NONE, I tell ya'.   Check out the link to hear some of their stuff for yourself.

So at the end of the night, my ears ringing and my eyes bloodshot & tired, I had no regrets about this show.  As these performers tour around the region, I urge you to catch a show if you can.
  You'll not be disappointed

Keeping my eye on these guys.

Liked what I heard last night @ High Five. They've got that country-meets-punk sound. I was reminded just an eenie weenie bit of Two Cow Garage with maybe some Supersuckers or something thrown in.

i though they were pretty good, if a little green. then again, i think the same thing of lucero. definitely had the emphasis on the punk side, which was nice. that band after 'em blew, tho'. only genuinely good and original stuff along those lines i've seen relatively recently is the glossary.
