In English:
Bewilderingly loud and entwining itself around the beats and sound waves of the old school bassline; this is music that always hits the spot, not only because nothing else can take its place but also because the music is so good, that you wouldn't like to lose sight of that fact. This is Trance music of a completely different kind, that works as if Mr raoul K was standing at the very summit of a mountain and from there allows himself to be drawn into a calmness that the world has to offer!

With his sixth 12″ in roughly a year, Mr. Raoul K shows no signs of slowing down his pace or watering down his sound. This Mule Musiq 12″ is a hot one, and instead of coming with two versions of the same cut, it offers two distinct sides to his sound. “Abuja” is one of the most unique cuts in his discography - it’s a compelling, electro take on Afrobeat, cheesy sax and keys just grooving out with the beat and a very Fela-esque vocalist (could be him actually, pardon my ignorance if so). Not the classic Raoul K style but an interesting diversion, for sure. “Wind Of Goree” is crafted in his normal structure, a free-roaming excursion with a flat techno beat and an exotic musical instrument, this time some sort of African xylophone. This cut in particular is what I’d expect to come from a Manuel Gottsching / Petar Dundov dream collaboration. Somehow Mr. Raoul K’s repetitive instrumental music carries an emotional weight I don’t find many other places.

Even if you didn't know that Mr Raoul K had an African background, it'd be pretty easy to guess it by the A-side on his newest 12-inch, his debut for Mule Musiq. "Wind of Goree" mines the sound of the balafon—an African instrument that sounds a little bit like the xylophone—for almost the entirety of its melodic output. The effect is haunting, as K's interest here isn't so much in building a melody as it is in building a mood. As a result, the balafon simmers, a reaction to the synth pulse that simply will not quit. Some commentators have pointed out that it's a perfect bridge from deep house into minimal. Or the other way around. They're exactly right.

"Abuja," on the other hand, is for the deep house heads exclusively. A flute pops in almost immediately, a sax drops by later on and voices arrive to provide weight to the winding bassline. There's a strand of deep house that often veers dangerously close to politeness. And this is very much it. But K's talent lies in the fact that the groove is pretty much undeniable. As the flute reappears near track's end, it's more than likely you're dancing too hard to care.

Seems like every month I am reviewing a new Mr. Raoul K 12″, but I’m not complaining! “Sun Of Gao” is on both sides, the a-side “City Mix” being a little more heart-pumping than “Village Mix” on the flip. The sound is still strictly Raoul K: various African percussion smoothly mixed with some minimal house music beats. “Sun Of Gao” sounds more like a community jam sesh than a carefully-manicured electronic track and has some real nice guitar lines that sweep in and out. There’s also some really cool organic bass that sounds like sheet metal popping in and out of place, as is the MO of Mr. Raoul K to work with at least one unrecognizable sound per 12″ to my American ears. I’m pretty sure he works personally with the musicians he is sampling, and it’s that human relationship that really elevates Sun Of Gao and the rest of his fast-growing catalog beyond electronic dance music into sound sculpted by flesh and blood.

Have to admit I'm more blown away than I thought I wuld be by the new "Sun of Gao" joint by Mr. Raoul K. on local Afro-house wiz DJ Said's recently revived Fatsouls label. It's truly an Afrominimal journey that seems perfectly of the moment. The gently expanding elements never exactly build to a climax (a hallmark of current dance music production) but they flow over you like smiling waves ....
Said will be virtuosically throwing this and other choice cuts from his stable this Friday at Otis. If you missed it, here's what I wrote in my last Super Ego clubs column (with a couple corrections -- hey I was blazin' at the time). This one's not to be missed for everyone who takes an interest in the growing effervescent confluence of traditional and electronic sounds.

My new track "Wind Of Goree" will feature on the next Mule's compilation series I'm Starting to Feel OK out on July 27.
The track will get its own release on Mule Musiq at the end of August.

Endless Flight will be the home to the next entry in Mule's I'm Starting to Feel OK compilation series.

While Mule Musiq has been the port of call for the past two editions, I'm Starting to Feel OK Vol. 3 is coming to Endless Flight. It's unclear exactly why it's been moved over, but no matter: The disc will once again feature a host of tracks from Mule's trio of labels (Mule Musiq, Mule Electronic and Endless Flight) and is set to include exclusive new tunes from the likes of Brendon Moeller, Mark E, Tony Lionni and more, as well as plenty of stuff that's never been released on CD before. As always, the comp was put together by label boss Toshiya Kawasaki, but this time you won't be able to hear each track in all of its glory. Instead, Toshiya has enlisted Mr. Force of Nature himself, Kza, to take the pieces and mix all 18 tracks together.

Tracklist
01. Kuniyuki - All These Things (Theo Parrish Dub Remix)
02. Mark E - Codsall Juniors
03. Cos - Mes/Natural Lifespan
