If I decide to form a new version of Paspalum, I'll create a new MySpace site for the band, but for the time being this site will be terminated once I work out how to do it. I wish the other ex-members of the founding lineup well.

It may well be that Paspalum have decided to continue, with Izzy Foreal being replaced by Jess Arnott on bass. However, as this is Izzy Foreal maintaining this site, I am unable to confirm this information, because I am no longer associated with the other Paspalum members, except Pete Lawson, who often performs with me in my 'Cafe Vibes' duo project. Certainly, a lineup featuring Jess Arnott on bass performed at the Bushfire Fundraiser at Bilambil Sports Club on March 8. 2009. Whether they performed as Paspalum is unknown to me, as they appeared in the publicity under 'and others'. Wouldn't it be exciting and perhaps ironic if there ended up being two versions of Paspalum, as there was for The 69ERS way back in the 1970s, when Brian Bethell, Dave Ovenden and Peter Knox sacked Francis Butler from his own band? Or: perhaps I might actually call my version The Shards! The Adventure Machine grinds on.

With the band inactive since July 2008, Izzy Foreal is curious about the number of hits the Paspalum site has generated over the past few weeks. Are people really interested in what may become of the shards? Izzy has been waiting to see if the other members would continue the idea with a replacement bass player, and perhaps the other members are monitoring the site to see if Izzy has taken up the option to continue. Somebody should certainly pick it up - it's a great idea: melding a variety of musical directions, preferences and influences that could easily be opposing but somehow worked (well ... up to a point. The founding lineup is, after all, defunct). How would we describe what came out of the unlikely melding? Urban Australiana? Bush Skiffle? Soft Rock? The Bastard Child of Bullamakanka? How should it continue, if someone takes up the option? So many questions, so few clues.

Paspalum's debut album 'Sticky Grass Pudding' has just been released (though an official launch won't happen until the band gets back from the Wintermoon Festival). We do, however, have copies in our hot little hands, so if you can make it to any of the rare gigs we're doing before the Festival, come armed with enough extra money to buy a CD (or we'll let your tyres down)!

The Paspoze (not our real name) are performing at the 2008 Wintermoon Festival up near Mackay, North Queensland, in May. The lineup will feature the three core Paspalum members, plus Chris 'The Boss' Fieldo on jamba and assorted percussive things (and sometimes drums, when The Bloke is playing mandolin). Our set will feature everything from the album 'Sticky Grass Pudding' (which should be released by then, for crying out loud) and some other selected songs, depending on which stages we end up on. Daz & Carm  from Gunnadoo Productions are doing the sound and stage at the Festival (it is Daz who is mixing the album tracks at this very moment in time - well, I guess 'in time' is the only place a 'moment' can exist, but I digress). If we can pull a live recording out of the Festival (and there's a good chance), that may become available at a later stage (also in time).

Izzy (bass) and The Bloke (drums) have recored a couple of poppy tunes with Dave ('The Singing Postman') Cavanah at Georgie Leach's studio in Bilambil. These two songs have been mixed by John L. Sayers, who also resides in the Bilambil area. More session are scheduled over the coming weeks to eventuate in The Postman's next album. (Only we, by the way, call him 'The Singing Postman' - that's not his official title).

The heading says it all folks. I was paying $39.95 a month for wireless broadband through Chilli iBurst Internet, and thought the shitty speed, etc, was to do with where I was located. I moved flats in Brisbane, and it never got any better (sometimes the speed was worse than dialup). After numerous emails to Chilli that were ignored, I cancelled the account and have since signed up with BigAir (progress report on that decision pending). I kept getting offers, news updates and bills from Chilli, and no matter how many times I reminded them that I had cancelled my account with them, the shit kept arriving in my inbox. Finally a human being sent a message from the Chilli end, stating that I'd cancelled about one day after the next month's subscription kicked in (something I would dispute strongly if I had enough money to pay solicitors), so I was liable for the final month's payment. I reminded them of the shitty service and their failure to keep their side of the bargain regarding speed, etc, but again the silence decended. Finally I received a bill with the nasty message about bringing in the loan sharks, so I paid the bloody thing - I haven't got the money to fight these bastards in court. All I can do is warn you all against doing business with a company who (after investigation, I discover) are selling more web time than they've actually sub-leased themselves, and to correct that oversight they cut all their subscribers' speeds back without any notification. Be warned.

Izzy is presently trying out a 'Kay' hollow-bodied bass restored by Ian Willis at MONGREL GUITARS. The bass was probably made some time in the early 1960s, and Ian has skilfully brought it back from the dead and returned it to a finely-tuned instrument that Izzy is finding a pleasure to play. Izzy will be putting the Old Girl through her paces over the next couple of weeks , but if the initial weekend's trial is any indication , the Kay and Izzy may be sparring partners for some time to come. Thanks to Ian and Mongrel Guitars for their skill and patience – they have made it their mission to restore 'Kay' guitars and basses : Here's how to contact them –

UPDATE: Everything has virtually been recorded for the album, except for the new possibility I LIKE PINK, and now Izzy has been offered the use of some high-level mixing software, after mucking around with various cheapies and not really getting the results he wants. This means the mixing is now underway with a vengeance, so the album may actually see the light of day instead of just being something they announce at gigs as "forthcoming". An anonymous donor has also injected some finances into getting the final mix mastered professionally, so that gives the band access to possible inclusion on compilation CDs and competition entries such as the Tamworth songwriting awards, as well as the inevitable shot at radio airplay - all of which require mastered tracks in this day and age. We think we've birthed a beauty, so continue to stay tuned!
