I spent two months following Phoenix's "freegan" community and Food Not Bombs through their post-consumer lifestyles of salvaging trash and dumpster diving for meals. You can read all about it here

"Sonny Long Is a Legend in His Own Mind"

Sometimes, as a journalist, I have to do things that I don't particularly like to do -- such as running a nice guy (albeit a blowhard bulls**tter) into the ground. I would like to commend my co-writer, Mike R. Meyer, on his first feature story. He tried his best to give the subject of our story a more flattering report, so if anybody has some venting to do about this one, please direct the vitriol solely at me. Thanks.

Otherwise, feel free to read and laugh.

This policy particularly applies to performers, artists, and other people who use MySpace comments to try and promote themselves and their work. I am all for this, and I don't mind approving comments from music artists that say "Check out my music!" and link to their pages, or include fliers for upcoming shows, etc.

I get a lot of comments for approval, but I don't approve them all. This is not because I don't like the artists or their work. In fact, there have been times when artists I really liked sent comments to me for approval and I had to deny them.

Here are three things that will make me automatically deny comments:

1. If the comment takes forever to even preview because it's got to transfer data from YouTube or Flickr or wherever, I will deny the comment. I don't have all day to sit and wait for data transfers and media to load. If a YouTube clip's embedded in the comment, that's okay -- provided it's not slower than a turtle on heroin.

2. If the comment is greedily long and will take up a ton of space in the comments section on my profile, I will deny it. I know that tours can often be long, and I appreciate the work and testitude it takes to tour, but I do not want all 287 of a band's upcoming tour dates hogging every inch of my comments section. Band should look at the location on my profile -- ARIZONA -- and just post shows in my region, as opposed to their entire, worldwide itinerary.

3. Comments that contain a lot of things that may take a long time to load -- several photos, more than one video, crazy flashing applets, etc. -- will be denied. I already put enough clogging junk on my page myself.

Really, it just comes down to common sense and courtesy, I think. I approve promotional comments all the time, and that's usually because they are reasonable in size and scope. Just keep it simple and straightforward, and MySpace will be a better place.

K? Thanks.

My latest feature, "Nerd of War," is online now. Many thanks to "Nerd of War" Simon Rohrich for letting me follow him around with notepads and tape recorders and document his Dark Age/Digital Age duality, and the cool inventions he's making with Elliptical Mobile Solutions.

Just in time for NBA All-Star weekend in Phoenix, it's my feature story about Phoenix Suns players' tattoos.
