I've uploaded a recording of Dick McBride reading the first chapter of The Astonished I to: myspace.com/dickmcbride
The
author recalls a conversation he had with Jack Kerouac, who had phoned
City Lights to talk to Lawrence Ferlinghetti about publishing Visions
of Cody.
A slightly different version of the first chapter was
originally published in Transit and then The Beat Journals, both
published by Kevin Ring’s Beat Scene Press.

About Dick McBride:
Dick McBride was born in Washington, Indiana in 1928.
After years of travelling around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Nebraska working in radio, Dick hit San Francisco in the early '50's to pursue writing more seriously.
Dick was store manager of City Lights from 1954 until 1969 and was friends and poet-in-arms with Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Kenneth Patchen and Richard Brautigan among others.
He first came to England in 1964 to "bohemianize" Tony Godwin's Better Books in London and returned in 1969 as the director of independent book distributors "McBride Bros. and Broadley".
He now lives at the foot of the Malvern Hills in Herefordshire, where he spends his time writing and occasionally giving readings.
"I'm glad to see you're still going strong. There's hardly any of us left!...Ciao baby."
Lawrence Ferlinghetti
"I have long admired his energy and his stubbornly hopeful vision against all the odds...I am especially taken with "Grass", it's haunting refrain running through what is both an elegy and a rhapsody.
"In general I am gladdened by writing that can be wild like Ginsberg and is never far from ecstasy."
Philip Callow

Organised by the Green Man Festival, it promises to be "2 days of weirdness in the Black Mountains."
The party takes place inside the intimate settings of Baskerville Hall and will run from Sundown to Sunrise each night. Entertainment will come from guest DJs, psych folk cinema and silent films with live music accompaniment. Witches and druids will also be on hand, alongside pagan puppet shows and holistic therapies.
Entry tickets are priced at £60+ for the weekend, with a range of special accommodation offers within Baskerville Hall, from sunken baths to bunk rooms, or fend for yourself in the nearby town of Hay-on-Wye.
You can catch my set on Friday night between 9-10pm.
More details below:
from: www.thegreenmanfestival.co.uk
"The snows have cleared, the rain has eased and the first daffodils are peeping through; it's time to celebrate the coming of Spring. On 23rd and 24th March the Green Man returns to Baskerville Hall, for a Rite of Spring party, with 2 days of wine, witches and song in the Brecon Beacons.
On Friday 23rd, King Arthur Pendragon will perform the opening ceremony and raise the curtain on a feast of music and films, mystics and freaks, as the flower-bedecked Hotel becomes a circle of Equinox appreciation. Far from the madding crowd, the Rite of Spring is a chance to commune with nature and friend, under the welcoming arms of the Black Mountains.
The music starts at 6.00pm on Friday and finishes at 6.00am on Sunday. In the Folkey Dokey bar, over 20 DJs will be performing, with live music in the Cinema to a background of rare and gothic film. In the Hallway, pagan puppetry looks at the roots of the green man, while the Literature Room explores the history of psychoactive mushroom use. The Hotel grounds play host to the twelve members of the Neighbourhood Witch, who invite you to join the seed planting ritual.
When the music stops, take a stroll through the castled Hay-on-Wye, dine in a Country Inn, or follow the pilgrims' trail to the monastic ruins of Llanthony Priory.
The line-up is finalised and looks a lot like this....
Gruff Rhys (SuperFurryAnimals) Youth & Simon Tong (Butterfly Folk Community) Andy Votel & Dom Thomas (B-Music) Fence Collective (inc. King Creosote) Cherrystones (Poptones) The Earlies The Peth (feat. SFA members) Doug Shipton (Battered Ornaments) Luke Insect (Laughing Windows) Jumble Queen (Spinning Jenny) Pete Fowler (Monsterism Island) Justin Spear (Freakzone) John Stapleton (Evil Kitty) Lol Hammond (Drum Club) Geoff (Static Caravan) Jonny Trunk Rob McDowall Jon Hopkins Pete Paphides Sea Records Chris Fowler Jon & Carl Forecast"
