| Official Best of Hull Album Release |
In a unique collaboration between Hull College, Purple Worm Records and local musicians, the Best of Hull Volume One, Official Album to the Freedom Festival 2009, has nominated a local charity as its direct beneficiary.
The first of its kind in the city, the Best of Hull celebrates local music of all genres, both past and present, providing an eclectic body of work of historical significance to Hull's music scene.
The Best of Hull offers not only a rich and varied view of new and emerging talent from Hull but gives a unique chance to uncover a wealth of talent from the past five decades. | |
| Celebrating the work of Hull Heroes such as Ronnie Hilton, The Rats, Spiders from Mars, Jimmy James, Uriah Heep alongside more recent acts like The Housemartins' Ted Key and Hugh Whittaker, Red Guitars, Secret of Life, Fila Brazilia and The Paddingtons.
The album is a first class example of effective citywide teamwork, utilising the skills and knowledge across a broad spectrum of contributors.
Released on the Purple Worm Records label the Best of Hull illustrates firsthand the cultural vision and wealth of talent available within the city. |
| The project, which was started in January 2009 by Foundation Degree Music Students at Hull College, was intended as a reflective album to showcase the Hull music scene over the decades; however, as the project progressed it naturally expanded and became a platform for alternative Hull based talent. |
| The CD artwork was sourced via a regional competition which was won by Hull College photography student Natalie Boothby, whilst Graphic Design on the album was provided via music student and local DJ Mark James. | |
| As a non profit making organisation Purple Worm Records ensures that any money made from the sale of the album is fed directly back into local and independent music and to this extent, many of the well established artists featuring on CD2 The History of Hull generously waved royalties on their tracks. |
| As one of the first 'community minded' UK record label, £1 from the sale of each CD will be donated to the Hull Churches Home From Hospital Service (HCHH); a local charity which provides free low level support to residents of Hull upon discharge from the city's main hospitals.
Jean Templeton, Chief Executive of HCHH commented: 'We are delighted to have been nominated as a beneficiary to the album. All proceeds raised will help us to continue our core service of providing help to those who need it at a time of great distress.' |
| The Best of Hull is available for digital download through all major online stores and www.myspace.com/purplewormrecordsuk and in store at HMV plus all good music shops and boutiques RRP £5. |
Included with the album is the chance to win FREE recording time in the state of the art Purple Worm Records recording studios, to produce a 3 track EP; the winner will then be considered for inclusion on any forthcoming volumes of the Best of Hull.

It is reaching a crucial time in Hull and East Yorkshire's bid to be a host city at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and if we are to be successful in bringing the most high profile event in world sport to this region, we need your support! FIFA will take into consideration the amount of support in the general public and local businesses when deciding which cities will be successful so it is vital that as many businesses as possible give their backing to our bid. There are two simple steps you can take to help make this happen: 1) You can show your support by texting ‘Hull’ to 62018. Texts are charged at standard network rate. 2) Go online and register your support at www.hull2018bid.com . The impact of a successful bid for Hull and England would have a significant, long-lasting impact. The build up to the competition, during, and long after 2018 has ended, Hull will be enjoying the World Cup. The developments required to host the competition will create jobs, continue the improvements been made across the city and promote the region to the wider global audience that follow the World Cup in their millions. There is an active part of Hull and East Yorkshire’s bid that will ensure the region has a legacy that will benefit the community well long after the World Cup has left the region. This will include sports development, business and social aspects. Please Back the Bid and help us bring the World Cup to Hull! With best wishes, Purple Worm Records

Article 'Best of Hull Vol 1' By Michelle Dee
Right now it would seem that Hull is really ready to embrace its rich musical heritage, to celebrate live music and to support the young talents of the future. In a week where three different compilations of Hull based artists have been released (State of the City - Warren Records and Wilberforce Connexion) there's only one, Best of Hull Vol 1. - Purple Worm Records where you find Rock, Pop, Indie, Jazz, Classical, Punk, Electronica, House, Techno, Folk and Soul all on the same playlist. This is the first Hull compilation that truly offers something for every taste and demographic.
Best of Hull Vol 1 is the official compilation released in partnership with the forthcoming Freedom Festival, celebrating the rich and diverse history of live music performers and recording acts in Hull past and present.
Best of Hull Vol 1 is a double CD collection put together by degree students at Hull College studying Music Technology and Production under the watchful eyes of Lecturer in Music, Mik Newton (Head of college based label Purple Worm Records) and Project Manager Steve Cutler. The brief written in January of this year affords the students a unique opportunity to work with Hull artists past and present, to record and engineer the tracks chosen by the artists in the proffesional recording suite within Hull College. As the process continued the students and tutors alike embarked on something of a history lesson as they collated tracks from evry era. With some such as the demo recording from The Rats digital reproduction would prove to be a long and involved process. Due to the recording having been made back in the late sixties on a four-track reel, renowned music engineer Keith Herd from Fairview had to construct a custom built oven in order to bake the precious tape to enable it to be cleaned up for inclusion on the CD.
As Mik Newton qualifies this, “All the artists are riding on the Freedom Vibe, and we intend to make the annual Freedom Festival an integral part of Induction Week for the new intake of students each year. To this end there will be a number of students undertaking Work-based learning at this weekends live music festival, giving them hands on real life music industry experience.
The joined up thinking between tutors, promoters, Ents management, artists and wider educational establishments will help to develop and retain the skills base of the new graduates, provide genuine opportunities for employment, thus encouraging them to stay in the area, bringing real benefits and new forward thinking business to the city.
Past Hull music compilations such as All Hull Let Loose from 1992 and early in 2000 Beat out of Hull and follow up Beat Goes On collection although essential for every Hull music buff they were limited in that they only offered the listener a snapshot of the music popular to that particular era. Best of Hull Vol 1 offers not only a rich and varied of new and emerging talent from Hull but gives a unique chance to uncover a wealth of talent from the past five decades. Celebrating the work of Ronnie Hilton, The Rats, Spiders from Mars , Jimmy James, Uriah Heep alongside more recent acts like Housemartins Ted Key and Hugh Whittaker, Red Guitars, Secret of Life, Fila Brazilia. Mik and Steve deliberately targeted the more commercial artists those artists that have put Hull on the map or helped shape and inform Hull's musical heritage.
There are a few notable omissions The Beautiful South, Fonda 500, Mr. Beasley to name but three but as due to the ongoing nature of the project, these and artists of the future could find themselves on later volumes. It is also important to note that many of the artists on CD2 waved royalties on their tracks to lower costs thus overcoming the usual difficulties faced when compiling tracks for re-release. All profits from the sale of Best of Hull are to go to the young emerging artists in the city thus supporting their future musical ambitions.
This unique collection, hopefully representing a sea change in the establishment's opinion to music performance, is released officially at the Freedom Festival on the 12th September 09 and will be available to all from the Purple Worm Stand.
Best of Hull Vol 1 can be bought at a special discount price at the launch gig at The Lamp off Beverley Road Hull Friday 11th September where you will be able to enjoy performances by City Ghosts, Holy Orders and TopGun (tbc) Buy buying the double disc at the launch event you will receive exclusive wristbands affording you access to all the Purple Worm shows and afterparties being held over the special weekend.
Best of Hull is also available through all major download sites and through HMV Hull Store on Whitefriargate in the city retailing for £8.00.
Having listened to all 26 tracks (19 of them being previously unreleased)I can safely say the Best of Hull series promises to have the most wide cross-over appeal than any other Hull music compilation to date. The release of the new Best of Hull in conjunction with Freedom Festival each and every year could well become a halcyon date in every music fan's diary.
