One Flew East + Alter Ego Mania + Spectacles - Oxford Art Factory (19.11.09)

one-flew-east
Spectacles - Great opener. Just a drummer and a guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist but they were joined later onstage by a guy playing bass, no idea if he was in the actual band or not. The set took a definitively experimental (hooray!) turn when the leads trippy oscillating synth started penetrating the room over the apt drumming- I was completely mesmerised for about 35 seconds - transfixed by this mind boggling sound with drums over the top that actually sounded really original and was totally out of the blue. Cool style.

Alter Ego Mania - I'd heard of these guys a fair bit before, namely from my flatmate who'd (apparently) banged one of them. They had a pretty somber sound. The lead was wearing great shoes.

One Flew East - Perfect closer. Rich (the lead) was a really enigmatic performer; jumpy, rowdy, a really unique voice. The bands sound was cohesive, really tight, and the slight hip-hop influences became immediately apparent when the crowd decided to go about half as nuts as Rich. Great drumming too.

One Flew East - Panic Notes (2009 EP)

If you’re a fan of stadium rock bands such as The Music, Wolfmother or Red Hot Chilli Peppers you may want to give these up-and-comers some well-deserved attention.

One Flew East, having only formed last year, have enjoyed quite a rapid rise in Australia’s music industry. Winning the Jager Uprising 08/09 semi-final and receiving a MusicOz Award nomination, in addition to tackling Sydney’s live music scene at venues which seem to be getting bigger and bigger as word-of-mouth spreads, all this band needs is to make good music and they are well on their way to becoming the next success story.

And is their music good? Yes. It is extremely good.

Their 5 track EP ‘Panic Notes’ is a refreshing reminder that modern rock bands do not need to include hints of electro in their music to become ‘the next big thing.’ This is raw funk rock/stadium rock at its finest from the opening single “Queen” to the closing “Eureka Kings.”

Vocalist Richard Lucano conveys so much passion in his voice that you feel like just listening to this CD has transported you to one of their live gigs. You feel every layer that goes into these tracks as Lucano’s interesting voice reaches through the speakers and grabs your attention by force; as Daniel Griffith provides thunderous riffs that would make any pure rock fan proud; as Nate Chan throws in a bit of funk with bass lines which instantly make you think Red Hot Chilli Peppers; and as Dane Conner attacks the drums with a vengeance.

Throw a little bit of Piano into that mix and you have an effective recipe for a very impressive EP.

Review Score: 8/10

"One Flew East, who are about to release their debut EP ‘Panic Notes’, played a solid set. Playing their brand of funk rock with a touch of electronica and whole heap of soul. Clearly a band who know their craft, expect to see more these guys play around the traps in the coming year."

One Flew East – Panic Notes EP (Free Track Download)

One Flew East
Panic Notes EP

By Michael Carr

If you had the chance to have a listen to One Flew East’s live EP The Molotov Sessions you will be well aware of the increasingly rocking direction they’re taking. New EP shows no signs of the band stopping this fist-pumping trajectory.

It’s nothing that new, it’s not going to change how you look at music, but in terms of pop/rock, I’m backing these guys all the way. They have that quality that makes you want to scream, that sort of sound that would work as well in a stadium as it does in a club.

First track Queen opens up with some funk drenched guitar work but does so with more intensity as the band push you through a call and response between wall of sounds chord pounding and loose limbed syncopation.

Cul de sac also opens with a furiously funky hook, this time reminiscent of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, with it’s relentless slap bass sections and fluid sections of impressive guitar rifferry.

Next track Hopscotch brings the band’s funk influence further into the fore with it’s halted opening and bouncy bassline. By the time it’s hit the chorus though it’s back to hitting all the boxes on the radio friendly rock list, the main difference they do it without sucking balls.

Closer Eureka Kings displays the bands explosive energy and singer/keyboardist Rich Lucano impressive chops channelling shades of Mike Patton and Perry Farrell, and hammering home the tone of the EP as a sort of Jane’s Addiction meets Jack Johnson slab of perfectly paced and swinging pop/rock.

While at first I didn’t like the recording, I think the grit that’s been left in and the absence of anything being over polished really pulls the whole thing together in that you feel the musicians the instruments as opposed to the producer behind the sound desk as is usually the case these days.

Overall this isn’t the most original or professional release I’ve heard this year, but it does have a whole lot of heart and feeling in both the vocals and the playing. Considering it’s still very much early days for the band, I highly recommend following their progress and checking out their vitriolic live show, if only to see some of the most enthusiastic keyboard playing you’re ever likely to see.

Jager Uprising Grand Final

As all of you most likely already know, we've been lucky enough to make the Grand Final of the Jager Uprising competition @ The Annandale Hotel. This happened waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in October 2008, so it's been at the back of our minds for a while now.

To think that it was 10 months ago that I was hiding in a store room at Mt Druitt Westfield (Long story for another time), refreshing my phone's inbox every few minutes to see if we'd made it through to the final...Now there are 'three sleeps to go', and we're set to battle it out alongside 4 phenomenal bands for the Jager Uprising Crown (Read: $10,000 Recording & Distribution Prize).

With an EP recording scheduled for July, we couldn't even begin to tell you how mind blowing that would be. What we can tell you is that the playing order is decided at 7:30pm (First Act on at 8pm), and the winner is announced on the night, once all fingernails have been digested.

This will be our last full band show for a little while, and it's set to be a huge one.

It's all happening this Thurs July 2 @ The Annandale Hotel from 7:30pm.
Would love to catch you there!

Cheers,

Rich (+Dan+Nate+Dane)

Rich from One Flew East
By Michael Carr

Rich From One Flew East

We all remember The Bee Gees. Windblown locks with a golden sheen. Furiously virile shrubs of chest hair erupting aroWe all remember The Bee Gees. Windblown locks with a golden sheen. Furiously virile shrubs of chest hair erupting around gold medallions. Deliciously catchy vocal melodies and layers and layers of strings. They were Gods. They are legends.

Richard Lucano definitely hasn’t forgotten this, which is why the young frontman of Sydney four piece One Flew East enlisted the olive skinned genius that is Barry Gibb, to help the band get match fit.

“We’re being counselled by Barry Gibb,” Rich tells me, pausing for a moment as he finishes his workout on the rowing machine. “He’s a good man Barry is, he knows a lot about competition and we need that. We made the final of the Jager Uprising competition at the Annandale, which is happening on the 2nd of July, so that’s why we got Barry.”

Dripping in sweat Rich moves over to the treadmill. “The Bee Gees had the competitive advantage of their voices so he’s helping us find our own advantage.”

I ask if Barry is around and Rich warns me not to mention his name, fearful of his watching eye. Banishing the thought of the mocha skinned Adonis from my mind, Rich and I begin discussing the band and his work in the Syndey scene.

While One Flew East takes up all his musical energy, Rich also applies his impressive stamina to running Thai Fisherman Pants, a band night that has recently moved to its new home at Hotel Hollywood.

“The Hotel Hollywood is going great, Thai Fisherman Pants just really feels at home there. We had the launch with Decorated Generals. They’re writing some really solid music and their live show is really schmick, like properly produced,” he is gushing to me when a high pitched shout from some hidden room shocks him back on topic.

“Another thing that’s awesome about this new version we’re doing is from Midnight onwards we have this blues jam going and we invite all the bands that play on the night to stay around and have jam,” Rich explains enthusiastically as the treadmill buzzes loudly, increasing the incline.

His phone rings and he leaps off the treadmill to answer it. The conversation doesn’t last long – Rich explodes with quiet fury as his phone proceeds to drop in and out of reception.

“I’m using this phone that’s like 4cm long cos my iPhone’s broken,” he seethes. I ask what happened but I am met with a firm rebuff. “Don’t even go there man, I mean this is probably going to ruin any hope of getting one of our songs on an Apple ad but the best advice I have is to just not get one.

“It’s such a love hate relationship you know, it’s like I love you but you can’t keep throwing these tantrums on me. I think having an iPhone trains you for being a parent. You can’t understand it, it’s always chucking hissy fits, it looks so basic and as much as you love it at the same time it just shits you to no end.”

Once again a high-pitched scream echoes around the room and Rich falls silent, moving back toward the still humming treadmill to finish his workout. Trying to lighten his mood I ask about when the band plan to record next.

“Well we recorded our demos in March with Anthony The, who is just a champion, a great producer. He’s actually Youth Group’s sound tech and he has worked with The Vines and a bunch of other bands on the local scene. The demos were literally just us in a room going gangbusters and playing our arses off. I mean our live show is a large part of what we do, especially seeing as though we didn’t have recordings for so long, and I think we really captured that on the demo.”

“In July we’re going back into the studio to do the job a little bit schmicker, you know, keeping it raw but just making it a little bit more appealing to more ears, you could say.”

An alarm starts going off and Rich tells me it’s time for him to go sing scales in a sensory deprivation tank and that I have to leave or else Barry will get mad.

As he walks me to the door, I ask him if there’s anything else he wants mentioning. “If you’re free on July 2nd come on down to The Annandale and show us some love. Throw your G bangers. The more G bangers onstage when we hit that last note the better we’ll go. However preferably bring a bag of G bangers, nobody wants skid marked undies on stage.”

There’s another high pitched scream and Rich sighs. “Also Barry might come past, you never know.” Be sure to catch the band when they play The Annandale Hotel Jager Uprising Grand Final on July 2nd.

These days I'm stopped in my tracks so often to sign autographs and chat to waves of fans, it's getting harder and harder to walk outside. Thinking of employing a body double or something of the like. Sydney fans seem to be the most outgoing.

Take yesterday, for example.
Cheerfully walking down George St.
The faint smell of urine eventually becomes more vivid.
A fiftysomething year old lady with pieces of hair falling out grabs my arm.

"Do you wanna come down to the boats with me?"
Sorry. I really can't right now. I would if I could.
"Do you wanna to have sex?" (Toothless lady licks her lips seductively while touching herself)

Ok, I'm going to try to avoid being one of those pretentious wanker bloggers who is "post" everything and refuses to be remotely "now" out of a general view that by the time anything is referred to as "now" it is so "then" that it just ain't cool any mo', gangsta.

So far...failing.

But, in all honesty. Has "Amazing" become the adjective of a generation? Have all other adjectives been killed off by some lexical supervirus? I swear to Nick Littlemore, absolutely everything is "Amazing" right now, which may also just mean that everything happens to be superbly good right now...unlikely.

People, citizens, we are in "Amazing" overdrive.

And I'm guilty of this crime.
On multiple counts.
So as of this moment onwards, I'm installing an "Adjefilter" into my brain. It will limit by "Amazing"s to 1 x per day, after which I will receive a warning. Upon verbalisation of the second "Amazing" within 24 hours, an electric shock will be issued. Upon the third, paralysis will ensue for three weeks until vocabulary diversity is restored.

Place your orders now.

Think about it. We sell one of these things to GaGa, and once she's done talking about how amazingly controversial she is and how amazing her outfits are...by the time she gets to how amazing her wig looks on the day, we've offered the world 3 weeks of musical grace.

Go team.
