TUNNEL CANARY 'JIHAD' / 'LIVE AT THE ECCA 1980(WINTERKILL)' LIMITED EDITION 2LP rundownsun No. 44 / No. 49

Available for pre-order now: the limited edition(less than 200 copies!) 2LP version of TUNNEL CANARY's long delayed vinyl debut.

Formed nearly 30 years ago at the height of Vancouver BC's early punk scene, amidst Canadian HARDCORE progenitors like D.O.A. and SUBHUMANS, TUNNEL CANARY emerged with a sound more in common with the then still incubating UK POWER ELECTRONICS scene and a militant attitude/lifestyle more in-line with straight edge hardcore or east-asian asceticism.

Influenced by avant-garde guitarists Fred Frith and Keith Rowe, contempory electronic composers like TUDOR, STOCKHAUSEN, and CAGE, and NO WAVE bands like MARS and DNA, TUNNEL CANARY produced a volatile and often violent mix of pure-noise, synthesizer music, free-improv, and confrontational performance art. Centered around the chaotic guitar antics and synth compositions of guitarist Aleh Kaheen(now: Nathan Holiday) coupled with the accusatory and often absolutely-hysterical caterwauling of vocalist Ebra Ziron, and supported by the tasteful and powerful bass punctuations of David Sheftel, TUNNEL CANARY's unique sound sits somewhere in the spheres of POST-INDUSTRIAL, PROTO-POWER-ELECTRONICS, and NOISE.

This 2LP set represents the definitive TUNNEL CANARY document&183; Culled from material recorded between 1980 and 1983 representing the bands most prolific and powerful period. Included on the first LP is the bands sole released work 'JIHAD'. Edited and re-named "Erdang" and released on the cassette compilation "Stitching Small Tears" in 1981; here 'JIHAD' has been restored to its complete length and original title. Flip of 'JIHAD' is a recording of TUNNEL CANARY's extravagant multi-media live performance of 'BEAUTY SECRETS' from 1983. LP number two is a raucous performance from 1980 recorded at the Emily Carr Center for the Arts.

American Noise Legend, and early TC ally GX JUPITTER LARSEN remembers the TUNNEL CANARY live experience:

"A Tunnel Canary show had layer after layer
of racket fragments bouncing somewhere between the
back of your teeth and your inner ear. They were the
classical complaint against calm, and the archetypal
battle against boredom. They made you realize there
was more to punk than just safety pins and leather.
I remember seeing them open up for a William Burroughs
reading in 1981. They blew the PA in seconds! Nathan I
know doesn't care much for that one, but I remember
Burroughs telling me how he loved it. We all loved it.
Tunnel Canary was a wake-up call for those of us
fortunate enough to catch them live in those early
days. When we heard them we heard the future, and the
future was going to be loud!"

Absolutely no expense has been spared in the manufacturing of this record: expertly mastered by Joshua Stevenson (magneticring, samara lubelski band, caste-exotic archives, etc). Cut twice for quality assurance. Imported black paper poly-lined inner-sleeves. Quality offset printed, double-sided, 2-panel heavy cardstock covers. A HUGE 25.5" x 34" offset printed poster! And a beautiful vinyl-ink screen-print on the b-side of the live LP.

Sunday, August 12, 2007

on friday aug 10th 2007, around 7:40 pm i returned home from work to discover that my home, and the offices of RUNDOWNSUN records, and HOSTILE OFFICE AMBIENCE studios had been broken into. the brazen thief entered my home by force in broad daylight, from a relatively busy street. no one has come forward to say they saw anything.

the police have been informed, prints were lifted, and i have filed a report and a written statement with the VPD. if the perpetrator enters the criminal justice system they can and will be identified by the fingerprints they left behind. although this will not help return any of the stolen property or return my shattered sense of security, it may lead to an extended stay in prison(3 months???) for the possibly young crook, surely only helping them become a better, if not hardened criminal, and more than likely perpetuating their drug habit which in all likelihood lead the person in question to this sort of petty crime in the first place.

bitterness, and cynicism aside, any help with finding, replacing, or the return of any of the stolen items would be greatly appreciated. here's the short list of what is missing:

dvd's (a thru r alphabetically including: both grey gardens documentary's, liquid sky, heat, my summer of love, the road warrior, the matrix 1-3, the darkness, a christmas story, black christmas, ab fab series 1-5, monsters crash the pajama party:spook show spectacular (may have still been wrapped), hell house, badlands, carrie, harold and maud, annie hall, etc...)

behringer mx 802A 8/12 channel mixer (older model, missing rubber feet, 2 stickers with farsi/persian writing on the back)

sony minidisc player/recorder mzr-r50 (older model, silver) with disc inside, and tie clip stereo mic.

apex sp1 set of 3 apex studio condenser mic's with mic-stand clips. in box. long and mcquade price tag.

jewelry (lot's of unique costume jewelry including some egyptian motif pieces, a milk-glass necklace, a silver and jet floral broach, a red and white metal pinwheel broach and a silver and topaz ring, etc... these items have no HARD value, they can not be pawned as pawn shops do not take costume jewelry, the do however have deep sentimental value to my partner larissa)

dark green men's norco mountain bike (i have the serial number to identify)

yellow raleigh bike helmet brand new

line 6 DL4 delay pedal(green) scratched, preset stickers attached.

boss ps2 pitch shifter delay (blue guitar pedal)scratched heavily used.

boss dd6 digital delay (white guitar pedal)

2 metal works md30 vocal mic's

sony tcm 200 dv cassette dictaphone with tape inside

fortunately nothing absolutely pertinent to the operation of rundownsun was taken. so no immediate delays on the upcoming releases should be expected.

unfortunately, much of the equipment stolen is vital to both my set-up as sick buildings, and larissa's set as kellarissa. so expect even further delays with the new sick buildings material, and i'm sure some time before larissa will be able to perform in her usual manner.

thanks

josh

philips n2235, top-loading cassette player/recorder. built in mic/speaker, tone/mix, volume, pitch-control. line/mic in jack, line-out, mix in(?), counter, post fading control(?). recording and playback tested and work, pitch control works, heads have been cleaned to the best of my abilities. i've never tested the post fading, or mix controls, but seems like there might be some potential there for some serious mods.

realistic stereo mixing console. inputs: 3 1/4" mic inputs, 4(2 stereo pair, cera and mag) rca phono inputs, rca tape in, rca aux in. output: stereo rca out main, rca tape out. channels: 3 mic channels with faders and pan pots. 2 switchable stereo phono/tape/aux channels with cue, faders, and cross-fader. mono/stereo switchable master volume fader. headphone out + monitor volume. left/right mechanical VU meters. built in ground for turntables etc. works.

korg ddd-1 drum machine. i don't know too much about this machine and i've hardly used it, but it works! output: 6 individual 1/4" outputs, stereo phones 1/4" output, 2x1/4" (stereo/mono) master output, 1/4" sampled out, 1/4" trig out, minijack metronome out, minijack tape in/out. input: 1/4" audio in, 2x1/4" tap tempo, and s/s foot switch in. midi in/out. 4 expansion ROM cards included: orchestra 1, gate reverb 2, brushing 1, gate reverb 1. i think some of the built-in sounds may have been deleted. mostly used to drum out little patterns using the built in drum triggers.

akai cassette deck. 2x 1/4" mic inputs. stereo rca line in/out. stereo 1/4" headphone out. dolby. type I, chrome, metal tape/bias selector. well used. worked until very recently. capstan still turns, may need belt replacement?

fisher double cassette deck, synchro dubbing, normal/highspeed. sequential 2 tape playing. dolby. type I, chrome, metal bias/tape selector. stereo rca line in/out. works!

ibanez 1/4 Lb.er guitar pick-up. used. works!

traynor 8/201 8 channel mixer. built-in spring reverb! inputs: 8x XLR inputs, 8x 1/4" inputs, 1/4" mon eq in, 1/4" main eq in. output: 2 1/4" out (main, mon). 2x 1/4" (sub1, sub2)out. 1/4" mon out (pre eq). 2x 1/4" effects send/return. 2x 10 band eq's. each channel has: volume fader, pan (sub1/sub2) pot, 3 band eq, faders for monitor level, reverb, and effect (send/return), mic gain pot. everything works, it's a little "scratchy" may need to be cleaned up with some alcohol etc. it's big, it's heavy, it's brown! awesome for feedback! spring reverb sounds awesome!

supermind brainwave synchronizer with users guide. totally weird, and awesome little device from a bygone era. don't know much about it's intended use (besides the obvious "new age" references), but i do know it generates some interesting sounds. synthesis: alpha/beta wave generator = low bass tone, 6 different pitches. built in sound effects = crickets, stream, surf, and rain. stereo minijack audio output. stereo minijack input (bypasses built in sound effects, but not low tone generator). minijack output for led goggles (included and working!). powered by 9v battery or ac/dc power adaptor (not included). i also have numerous cassette programs including 11 "behavioral mindscripts" (attracting prosperity, eliminate procrastination, self confidence, winning personality, stay fit!, effective public speaking, etc), instant languages(sealed! includes work book!): spanish, french, italian, and german. fantastic journey programs for:"near death experience", "aboriginal dreamtime", and the ever popular "cetacean mind link". really works!

The Christa Min "The Devil And Tex Watson" 7" rundownsun No. 5

"Lessee...walking down Robson...hot summer day. Never go near that street usually, but woke up in some dude's penthouse near Hooter's. I woke up, grabbed a shirt off the floor and put it on...and some sunglasses...and a leftover Heneiken from the fridge. Tiptoed out, stepping over the sleeping bodies on the floor. Now I'm outside in the part of town that most needs a firebombing....and the sun is so...fucking...bright! Still stoned...no cash in pocket. Had enough money for a dollar store keyring that reads "Take me to Yr Dealer" with a drawing of an Alien smoking a joint. Bought it and immediately afterwards wished I bought a hot dog instead. Hot dogs. Swamps. Tex Watson. To my right there's an Asian businessman eating a hot dog. Drank the Heinenken down in one long drink. My mind's in the everglades. My mind's on Tex and Squeaky and Susan and Krenwinkel and dunebuggies and Ed Sanders and the Fugs...and that fucker Bugliosi...swamps. Swamps can hold you under. Until you can't breathe. Wouldn't want to fall into one...but I did. So hot! The sun is on it's way out, but not soon enough. Gotta shield...myself. "

Roxanne Jean Polise "Pine Apparition" c20 rundownsun No. 14

primitive, minimal, and brutal. 'pine apparition' is what can only be described as an electrified pre-historic soundscape. shimmering crystalline beauty collides head on with thick organic muck. crisp tones, and pristine electric crackle are obliterated by pulsating ooze and monstrous crunchy burl! it's like listening to geological birthing pains. a master at the top of his game. artwork by RJP printed in black on heavy grey paper. hand numbered 2-panel insert. spray painted high-bias cassette. $6.00 +shipping

black jesus and the cosmic prayer "my mind is a fruit farm" cdr rundownsun No. 19

indefinitely shelved cdr version of this obscure, criminally under-distributed, spacey, neu-cosmiche cassette originally released on blakk wainbow records a few years back. the light has come. ultra-minimal electronic waves lap at polished shores of crystalline drone. a curling fog of ritual noise and distant voices smokes your soul out of your skull, set free to cruise the inner-spaceways. cosmic devotional music. possibly one of the most striking and fully realized albums i have had the pleasure of releasing. edition of 50 copies. screen-printed high quality cdr, packaged in a screen-printed, hand-made digipack-style case with paste-on insert. $10usd + shipping.

BT.HN. "black mirrors and dark planet alignment" one sided LP rundownsun No. 20

over a year in the making, and well worth the wait. BT.HN. (LA BETE HUMAINE) brings you to a place where profane ritual meets barbaric violence! domineering waves of crushing bass and crackling electronics bury slithering spoken rites, and crest in thundering commands. a steady, measured rumble peppered with heavily effected vocals breaks into volatile metal abuse. vocals shift from paced incantation to frantic possession! similar to the abrasive works of TAINT, ATRAX MORGUE and IUGULA-THOR, but underpinned by a raw, ritualistic violence.

2-sided black and white offset-printed cover on heavy paper. one-sided 12" 33rpm vinyl record with silk-screened b-side. housed in a crystal-clear, heavy polyvinyl sleeve. featuring art and layout from the artist. $12.00 usd + postage.

wapstan "of zero and the void" c30 rundownsun No. 24

no howling abyss. no death-silent vacuum. just the ever present anti-presence of 60 cycles. hardly above perception. life between high voltage power lines. you're living it every day. no sounds, just pure, harnessed electricity. from canada's reigning underground drone lord. spray painted high bias tapes. xeroxed and hand inked artwork on recycled paper. numbered edition of 100. $6.00 +shipping

taskmaster "get dead" c30 rundownsun No.29

Flatgrey "xxxxxx" one sided LP rundownsun No. 30

long-awaited vinyl debut from vancouver underground noise legend flatgrey.industrial noise. harsh, industrial noise. pure sound. mechanical, electrical, valve and tube. scrounged, rescued and resurrected. filtered through obsession. menacing roars of bass pushed along grinding mechanics, like millions of rows of pneumatic teeth. heaving, gnashing. compressor hiss, and blast furnace tongue. incendiary atmosphere, superheated, and forced through junked magnets and shredded cones. a nameless exercise.

1-sided gold offset-printing on heavy black paper. one-sided 12" 33rpm vinyl record with silk-screened b-side. housed in a crystal-clear, heavy polyvinyl sleeve.featuring art and layout from the artist. $12.00 usd + postage.

werewolf jerusalem "surrounded by fangs" c26 rundownsun No.31

new material from the legendary richard ramirez. a stripped frame of narrow sounds forced from discrete locales, and oblique devices. organized into sonic terraces; plateaus of hiss and crackle abruptly transition. 2 tracks of dense static and drainpipe howl that exemplify richards meticulous, source-driven investigations of textured sound. edition of 100. offset-printed 2 panel j-card. spray-painted high bias cassette. $6.00usd + shipping

emaciator "habit" c20 rundownsun No. 34

rundownsun is proud to announce yet another master work of jon borges'(pedestrian deposit, black air, knives) minimal and highly finessed noise/power electronics project emaciator. with heavy references to the early '80's european industrial scene, most notably the BROKEN FLAG label, emaciator walks a path quite divergent from borges' previous work. discarding the progressive, heavily edited, harsh-blast approach, in favour of steady throbbing drones, controlled feedback, and sickly vocals. self-described as the antithesis of pedestrian deposit, emaciator's focus is regression, degradation, and waste. human waste... habit, vice. inevitable conclusion. final solution. turn back the hands. silver offset-printing on heavy colour paper. xerox labled, high bias cassette. hand numbered edition of 100. $6.00 +shipping

black leather jesus "wild" c34 rundownsun No. 36

consistently active since 1989 black leather jesus should need no introduction. their debut for rundownsun offers a focused, three-round burst of pure, speaker-shredding distortion. convulsive emissions, and aggressive blasts in an ecstatic/chaotic convergence. explosive. concussive bombast, screeching feedback, and heavy electronics from this truly seminal american noise unit. edition of 100. offset-printed 2 panel j-card. xerox labeled high bias cassette. dipped in rubber with stamped catalog tag. $8.00usd + shipping

eli bornowsky "untitled" c40 rundownsun No. 37

first available recordings of vancouver visual artist eli bornowsky's tape, and electronic compositions. the first time i became aware of eli was when i was participating in The Western Front Gallery's open call for new musical works. i was lucky enough to catch eli in performance with sam mckinlay of THE RITA, and christian nicolay of THE REV. my face was thoroughly melted. i soon after attended a solo performance of eli's at the now defunct Blim gallery in downtown vancouver. i was immediately confronted with something quite different from the collaborative performance. humoristic juxtaposition, kitsch-culture/noise-culture referencing, caustic frequencies, concrete technique, primitive fourtrack manipulations, and effects pedal tweakings all expertly executed in a mesmerizing albeit abrasive 15 minuets. from those experiences and other like them eli was immediately at the top of my list of artists to approach when i started rundownsun. 2 years on and a release has finally materialized. like his visual art eli's sound work "address[es] perception in a formal psychedelia". total rainbow electronics. colour xerox artwork by eli bornowsky. spray-painted high bias cassette. $6.00usd + shipping

comedy "untitled" c30 rundownsun No. 42

30 minutes of personal references, inside jokes, and obscure concepts. extremely limited and only available at LEADERLESS: contemporary cassette culture on now at printed matter NYC. offset-printed 3 panel j-card. spray-painted high-bias cassette.
