Deerheart—No Legitimate Purpose
Produced by: Tom Ciorciari Recorded by: Tom Ciorciari Engineered by: N/A Mixed by: Pete Min and Ed Stasium Mastered by/at: N/A
Deerheart is the nom du rock of Tom Ciorciari, a veteran of 80s Boston pop-rock claccisists, The Pets (along with Muck and the Mires frontman Evan Shore). Given the pedigree, “No Legitimate Purpose” is hooky, crisp, and structured. Now calling suburban New York home, Deerheart’s new release—his third--is a lyrically thoughtful and musically wide-ranging collection of rock and roll styles and themes of love and loss, family, death, suburbia, nostaligia, and sometimes just a good three minute pop gem. Deerheart’s bell-clean tenor sings over arrangements that recall Motown (“Complicated Girl”), Springsteen or Hiatt (“Let’s Drive”), and the British Invasion (“Wasting Time”). Thematically, Deerheart confidently covers a lot of ground. Lyrics such as “I can’t afford to live where I was raised” and songs about marriages breaking apart and mortgage rates prove that this could not have been written by a 20 year old indie rocker looking inward. This is a thoughtful state of the union address--with geetars—for the late 30s and beyond. In the CD era, these 21 high-quality tracks offer a welcome return to the double-record. Think of it as a thoroughly enjoyable Exile on Maple Street for those of us nearing 40 with long and lovely rock and roll memories.

As I'm sure some of you know I've been an regular participant in Steve Prisco's annual (14th this year, I think; having had a few years off in the middle) Elvis Presley Tribute Show. Way back in '93 or so I was knocking around, looking for something little-known to perform, as I'd rather go that way than the Big Hits route (although in recent years I've certainly done my fair share of the iconic Elvis songs). Anyhow, buried in my wife's record collection was one of those 22-track compilations that made very little sense in the way of song selection, and tagged on like an afterthought at the end of side one was this obscure little pop gem. It hails from "Spinout" originally and, much to my chagrin, may well have been featured in the background in "Dirty Dancing". More often than not the choice we've made over the years is to play the songs as originally arranged, but on this track Steve let me have my own way and we played it in the country-rock version you hear here. The recording was done over the last week and I'm pretty sure the harmonies are not those we did way back when (Jon G. would know), but I did the best I could and hope you find a bit of enjoyment in this pleasant little number. And please, come on out to the Elvis Show, Sat. Jan. 24 at Matty T's Roadhouse in Commack!

So, what have I been up to these past months. A quickie gig at Gizzi's Coffee last spring and nothing. Been in "the studio", such as it is, putting together what I hope will be a much-adored full-length follow-up to "Groovy World". Calling it "No Legitimate Purpose". Two cd's (wot?!?) Yes, that's right. Double cd. 21 tracks. Is he out of his mind? Is he that full of himself? Who does he think he is? Yes. Probably. And, just a guy with a bunch of songs that need to get out. Hoping there's enough of a mix of styles to keep it interesting. Lotta soul searching went into the decision and hopefully I've made the right choice. Punk (circa 1977), Motown r&b, folk, power pop, a touch o' ska, plain ol' rock'n roll, a 50's doo-woppy kind of piano thumper (sans the actual "doo-wops"), a backwards guitar solo and an obscure cover of a bluesy little pop number from 1933 should provide a little something for everyone. Still finishing mixes and artwork, not to mention the digital booklet (more to come on this as we near release)! Look for a late summer/early fall release, and new tracks posted 'round the same time. 'Til then, enjoy what's left of yer summer and kiss someone you love!

Hey all!
Just a heads up. I will be releasing a 6-song Ep in late June (I'm shooting for a 6/19 date). Expect more upbeat tunes than those on the somewhat more introspective "Groovy World". Touches of r&b, Teenage Fanclubesque power pop and rockabilly abound. Titles include "Summer Streets", "Shaken", "Kingsland Avenue" and "Do You Feel Old?" I also expect to be gigging more over the next few months - Long Island, NYC and a couple of festivals (all dates and location TBA). I'll be posting two of the tracks on the page here - don't ask me which just yet - sometime in the next week or two. Until then, "You've got a lucky face!"
Tom

Hey guys,
As you probably know released the full-length cd on 2/27. Lotta hits on the site and a couple of purchases - so thanks to everybody who listened or sent a congrats and especially forked out the couple o'bucks! GW should be showing up on iTunes sometime next week, as well as some other on-line music sites, so keep an eye out! We'll be getting the disc out to some radio stations and, hopefully, some radio play will get a little word of mouth going. It looks like we'll be doing some acoustic gigs, though there is nothing set in stone at this moment. Also, I'm "back in the studio", such as it is. Look for an EP come May/June. Three or so new tunes and a pair of outtakes from the GW sessions. Once again. Thanks for all the interest and support. Hopefully we'll be out there soon bringing it to you live!

Okay, so why Deerheart? you ask. Why the need to hide behind some monolithic, seemingly arbitrary one-word quasi-80's hair metal band moniker? First Bwana, now this? Whassup with that? you wonder. And rightfully so.
First off, I like the idea of the quasi-annonymity (and apparently I like using the word quasi!) of putting a band name to the music. Inspired by the likes of F.N. Cornog's East River Pipe, Iron & Wine, Badly Drawn Boy and Conor Oberst's Bright Eyes I thought it might be cool to record the music on my own with minimal collaboration, thereby getting the ideas bouncing around in my head out in as pure and indiluted a manner as possible. That way if you like the music you'll track me down and say, "Hey, Tom, love the new stuff! Great!". If, on the other hand, what you hear doesn't do it for you, or, worse, causes cringes and foul language, you'll simply groan, "Ah, that Deerheart band sucks" and hopefully leave it at that.
Second, the name Deerheart itself is a translation of my last name. So there!
And last, you try pronouncing Ciorciari! Go on. See?
It's no big deal, really. So, listen and enjoy. And, as my old pal Mike is wont to say: "Don't knock the pop!"

Ah, yes, one weekend in April 1984. It hadn't really warmed up yet and we kinda froze standing around that elementary school in nothing but t-shirts. The kid who played Charlie must have smoked me out of three packs cigarettes over those two days. On the other hand I look like I'm 6'1" whenever he stands next to me, so that's the trade-off, I suppose. The radiator on my car went just as I pulled into Mike's driveway and I had to drive from Jericho back to Greenlawn on about a half pint of radiotor fluid. My mechanic was none too pleased with me. Director Greg Gutbezhal's (sic) then-girlfriend was quoted at some Alphabet City house party that we (The House Pets) played as saying, "Greg doesn't watch movies, he makes them." All the young bohemians! I remember looping my voice-over dialogue draped in a black cloth in Mike's NYU dorm room by Francis (his last name wasn't really Riboflavin, was it?) Screened at NYU sometime just prior to our final gig at our beloved haunt, The Dive.
