Just wanted to let Nerelisin fans know about 2 upcoming shows that feature 2/3 of Nerelisin. Eliot and Sean are playing with Kervan, a 5-piece group specializing in Istanbul music of many varieties, from Istanbul folk songs, to sarki, to light classical instrumental pieces.

Fronting Kervan is Haluk Kecelioglu, on vocals and violin, and in addition to Eliot's 'ud playing and singing and Sean's percussing Kervan features Ahmet Cagri on kanun (and occasional vocals) and Sam "Blood Eagle" on percussion (Sam normally is seen to the public through his excellent metal band Saros but also has a passion for Turkish and Arabic percussion).

We played a Turkish party on Treasure Island in April and rocked the house - I'm not talking metaphorically, the floor nearly collapsed in Ahmet's apartment building! Now THAT's a party! We're bringing our dance-inspiring enthusiasm to San Francisco and Berkeley with 2 upcoming shows and would love to see you there - it'll be your last chance to see Kervan before the fall, as most of Kervan is Turkey-bound for the summer.

Tonight, we played our best gig to date at Jazz-Play Studio, the funky space owned by Donovan Mixon, a stellar jazz guitarist who lives and teaches in Beyoglu. We had special guests Hedi Güven, Calvin Lai, and Joseph with us, the energy was very good, and the sound was better than is typical for Istanbul venues. Janet danced a bit of Roman oyun havasi with us, and Yeliz and Ladi went at it with all manners of analog, digital, and video cameras.

It was actually a listening concert - I hope those who came to listen were able to, perhaps for the first time, hear what it is we do, what we can do, and well, probably, what we also can't do, but anyways...

This Thursday is our last gig at Victoria Lokantasi, our "birthplace," and regular gig since fall (since fall 2005 for Eliot). You better come on down, if you are in Istanbul, since otherwise you'll have to fly all the way to California to hear our next performances!

+++++++++

We just played a "singles party" at Victoria - it was interesting seeing how Turks conceive of a singles party. Besides our uptempo dance music (a bit more uptempo than usual), Elvis Presley filled the break times. I guess the twist = singles, at least in Istanbul...

Anyway, our main focus is on that concert coming up on the 5th of May at Jazz-Play studio. It's going to be our biggest concert to date, and we've confirmed that our friend Tanya Evanson will be reading her own Istanbul-inspired poetry with musical accompaniment - two other guest artists to be announced!

+++++++
Herhalde "the twist" = bekarlik, zaaten Türkiye'de öyle...

Last night, had one of our most fun gigs to date at Viktoria Lokantasi, the Taksim cistern/basement venue we've been playing at since the fall. We always enjoy our Thursdays there, but this night there was just that special singing and dancing energy - including one guy who had made a perfect fusion of central Anatolian halay with Saturday Night Fever. The crowd went wild.

If you missed our Milliyet interview, it's online now... apparently all of Turkey really does read Milliyet, as we got calls from friends in the Karadeniz and Izmir!

So, we became famous today in Turkey. Don't worry, it won't last more than a week. But a feature story on us appeared in the April 1 edition of Milliyet, the nation's largest newspaper (check our pics for a small and unreadable image - will try to get the text in a readable form up soon). For the most part, accurate - they got our teachers and influences correct (though 2 musicians we hoped would get mentioned - Serkan çagri and Sadrettin özçimi were cut by the editors, it seems), though inadvertantly Samuel rocketed to long-time professional musician fame (apparently he's been a pro musician for 17 years, an amazing feat, but not quite true).

Did anyone see us on Haber24 or on Star TV? We ask, since we didn't... but apparently clips of our performances of "Esmerim Biçim Biçim" did air a few times this week.

Anyway, back to the more common and mundane work we typically do - trying to get a few new tunes together for our shows next week!

+++++++

We're finally getting the time together to do a bit of promotional work and all the non-musical stuff that goes into a band. We're going to be in Time Out Istanbul magazine in April, and had some fun today doing pictures with their photographer and with our #1 groupie Ladi Dellaira, now a budding photographer. Then we shot a few songs for Haber24, a new private TV channel ("Esmerim Biçim Biçim" and "Anwar"). Just enough time between commitments to hone our rendition of Sezen Aksu's "Rakkas," a truly rocking piece that we've been wanting to play at our Saturday U-Turn gigs.

It's a crazy time - trying to handle the large number of gigs and practices here, trying to schedule an album recording, AND plan our summer and fall tours!

Kisira bakmayin, arkaslarimiz]
