So I got the idea for this theme when I had an exchange with a friend on Twitter. Having been involved with or been witness to many of the same incidents as my friend, I decided to share some stories about various artists who I've had some less than favorable experiences with over the past 18 or so years in radio. And no, I won't hold back as far as naming names. LOL.
Here we go with story number one.
So there used to be this club in downtown Santa Cruz. It was called Palookaville and it had a really good run from 1994 to mid 2000 or so. When they opened up, they had the vision to be an alternative to the most popular club for live music in the area, The Catalyst.
Now Palookaville had little bit of a slow start but about a year or so in, they really started rolling. They were booking really huge acts from many different genre's. Something that really set them apart from the Catalyst though was their willingness to book regular Hip Hop shows, both local and national.
Simultaneously during that time, I was dj'ing on two different stations. I was co-hosting the Wyse Up Show on KZSC in Santa Cruz with my man Jason D. And I was hosting my own show across the bay in Salinas on KHDC. In addition, I was spinning live A LOT at parties and events. At the risk of sounding egotistical, I really was holdin' it down for Hip Hop in Santa Cruz & the Monterey Bay.
So it was only natural that I basically became the automatic dj whenever Palookaville had a Hip Hop show. I shared the stage with everyone from Tha Alkaholiks to Dilated Peoples to Xzibit to Run DMC to Sugarhill Gang to The Roots to Goodie Mob to Salt N Pepa to Digital Underground to KRS One to Common to Camp Lo to De La Soul and on & on & on. I really was livin' the life.
So anyway, while most of them were friendly, accessible, etc. there were a few that were just assholes or, in some cases, bitches.
Now there is one story out of the many that really jumps out as being the one where I got the most heated. And it goes like this.
I was booked to be the house dj for the night. The headlining act was Foxy Brown. Now she had just released her second album and was touring to promote it. A year and ahalf earlier, when her first album was out and the local commercial station was stuck on stupid as far as playing her music despite her single "Get You Home" doing well on video channels, I was the one who really pushed the stronger tracks from the album in the mix every week.
So when I got the call to spin at the club on the night she was coming through, I thought it would be a great chance to cash in on my support by getting some "radio drops" and a pic for the archives. I should have seen the writing on the wall though.
As I got to the club around 5pm for sound check, there was a crisis happening. Apparently transportation to and from the hotel for Foxy Brown was never set up and they needed a way to get her and her 3 member crew to the club. Being the good guy I am, I volunteered to go pick her up. At the time, I had a 1994 Chevy Blazer with blacked out windows. Granted it wasn't a huge Suburban or Expedition (This was pre Escalade) but it was more than good enough for her 3 minute ride from the hotel.
When I got to the hotel, she took one step out of her room, saw the car, walked back into her room, and refused to leave until the club rented either a full size van or limo to take her to the club. Uh, okay. The club scrambled and found a van.
Fast forward 4 hours later. Proving that her drawing her power wasn't near what it was thought to be, the club is, maybe, a quarter full. I'm on stage spinning and it's time for her to come on.
I exit the stage and she does her 20 - 25 minute set. She comes off stage and falls into a couch in the backstage area looking, shall we say, "not right".
I quickly run back on stage and throw on a record. I make sure it's a long one so I can handle some business with her backstage. I grab her album, my recorder, and camera.
Backstage, I step up and ask her if she can record a quick drop for my radio show. She responds by telling me that she can't do that without permission from her label because it might piss off other stations in the market. Now remember, I'm the only one in the market at that time who's playing her shit.
I let that slide and ask if I can get a picture with her then. She tells me that she's not camera ready so no pictures. So basically she's saying she was ready ready to go on stage, regardless of the crowd size, and perform in front of the public but she can't take a picture.
This was where I lost it. I was heated beyond belief at her disrespect of my support and let loose. I made it clear to her that no one else was playing her shit in the market and, of the hundreds of other artists who I dealt with regarding drops & pics, she was the only one who came up this bullshit reasoning. Basically she wasn't worried about pissing off the sole supporter in the market as long as she didn't piss off the dj's who weren't playing her records. I liken this to building a house without a cement foundation.
Anyway, I stormed out of the room back to the stage and, as I did so, passed her manager. He only saw the storm that was happening and had no idea how it started. He followed me back on stage and tried to find out what happened. I ran down the entire scenario and made it clear that as a result of her disrespect, she had just lost the only support she had in the market.
The manager, obviously seeing the damage that was happening, tried to go and smooth things out with her backstage. While I give him credit for trying to calm the situation, he sort of threw gas on the fire. When I walked backstage, He had taken my record with him. When he came back about 5 minutes later, he told me all she was willing to do was sign it. He handed me the album with her scribbled signature on it.
I know you're probably saying to yourself, what is so important about radio drops and pics? Well since college dj's don't get paid yet put in 10x more work on our shows than most commercial dj's do, getting drops to use on our shows and pics for our archives means a whole lot. It's what keeps us supportive of artists long after they have fallen off the commercial radar. College dj's are the ones who start thousands of careers for artists and, numerous times, are the only ones who ever support some artists. So taking 2 minutes to record a drop or 10 seconds to take a picture is building a cement foundation to a career.
But here she is disrespecting a dj showing her support. And that right there is the reason I've never played any of her records since 1998 when this happened.
She's released a few albums over the years. They've sold maybe 4 copies. She's been in trouble with the law a few times. And radio basically ignores her. Obviously I'm not the only one she ever shit on.
That's my Foxy Brown story.
Coming soon, stories about KRS One, Salt N Pepa, Phesto from Souls Of Mischief, and more. Stay Tuned.

"I got so much trouble on my mind. Refuse to lose". Chuck D
Well it only happens once a year my friends. No, not my birthday (although that is coming up soon). I'm talking about the annual VH1 "Hip Hop Honors" show. This year was the 6th edition and I have to say, despite some high points, there were a lot of low points.
So let me break it down from start to finish.
The show began with a really stupid skit where Tracy Morgan was dressed as a preacher and backed by a choir. He started running his mouth about Def Jam history. This was really boring. since he was already in costume, he should have re-enacted the Arsenio Hall scene from Coming To America instead. If VH1 was serious about honoring Def Jam, they have started the show where it all began & had T La Rock come out and do, at very least, a verse from "It's Yours". But instead they give us Reverend Morgan. Boring. And why was Ed Lover dj'ing instead of Dr. Dre? Hmmmm.
Then came a vignette of LL Cool J telling the story of how he first got signed. I've heard this story a bunch of times but the way he told it here, with the impersonations and such, was really funny.
Next up was The Roots joined by Jazzy Jeff and Eminem paying tribute to LL. This was dope. Jazzy Jeff is so damn smooth on the wheels. And you can really feel the love Em has for LL's early work. This was a real highlight of the show.
Every time they flashed to Rick Rubin all I could keep thinking was Santa & Buddha had a kid. Damn. The Rick Rubin who was on the show tonight must have eaten the Rick Rubin who was in Krush Groove.
All I could do was say "why?" when I saw Jimmy Fallon there. But okay, whatever.
Public Enemy hit the stage and sounded great but, and no dis to Jazzy Jeff, Public Enemy without Terminator X just isn't Public Enemy. And was that Boots Riley from The Coup on stage with them? And why did PE only do one song? "Welcome To The Terrordome" would have been nice.
I have a really funny story I may blog sometime about Kevin Liles and his visit to Santa Cruz back in 94/95. But for now, let's move on.
Scarface & Ludacris were next to spotlight Def Jam South. Scarface was solid but his stage presence was nowhere near Ludacris. That dude just has a really strong energy level.
The Tracy Morgan / Scoop Giles skits sucked big time. He really must have pictures of VH1 execs with farm animals in order to keep hosting this show.
The Beastie Boy tribute was next. The lead dude from Gym Class Heroes had a dope shirt on paying respect to DJ AM (R.I.P.) and Roc Raida (R.I.P.) but having tattoo's all the way up your neck looks super stupid. KRS-One's freestyle was dope. This was also the first time of the night that I asked myself "why do I not know who this Wale' guy is".
Lyor Cohen's story about meeting Warren G was boring.
Hearing Trey Songz makes me miss Nate Dogg, who actually always made me miss Mixmaster Spade (R.I.P.). Since Trey Songz appears to be a modern version of Nate Dogg, that just means for two years he'll sound good on everyone else's tracks. Then he'll make an album of his own, sell maybe 33,000, and then go into obscurity. Cool.
So Clinton Sparks shouts out DJ AM and says nothing about Roc Raida (R.I.P.)? That right there speaks volumes to me about this dude.
Redman & Method Man should have done "How High" instead of what they did. It would have been funny if the IRS would have come out mid-song and cuff up Meth. LOL. Big respect to DJ Scratch for shouting out Roc Raida (R.I.P.). Whoever was mixing the sound for the Mary J. Blige / Method Man performance should be fired. It sounded horrible. Maybe that's was the energy level didn't work for me. They just lacked the chemistry of the original record. But nonetheless, I'm a huge Mary J. Blige fan.
Out of nowhere, next came Onyx. This was interesting to me. First, I'm glad they shouted out Jam Master Jay (R.I.P.). But didn't they sign to Def Jam after they had already had all their hits and the career was basically over? I mean "Slam" & "Throw Your Guns" were on R.A.L., not Def Jam. But okay.
I really liked Chris Lighty's vignette. Very sincere in his words.
Eve walked on stage and one thing was clear. She really should have implants by now.
Ashanti & Ja Rule were next up. This performance really had no chemistry to me. My tv started to form ice when they were on. Ashanti's body is bangin' but damn girl, what was up with the hair do. Seriously, it looked like a dried out Jheri Curl, half Mullet, half Mohawk with lines shaved in the sides. There really was a lot going on there. LMAO.
As they ran another Lyor Cohen vignette, a light bulb went off above my head and I came to the realization that while he may be and incredible behind the scenes genius, Lyor is a really boring to listen to. But it was hilarious when he put Death Row & Bad Boy on blast. That was hot.
Now earlier I mentioned that VH1 didn't bring out T La Rock. So when they brought out Oran Juice Jones, I said to myself "what the f*ck". But it was funny hearing him do the rap from the end of "The Rain". Silly rabbit. Hey! Don't touch that coat. Hahahahaha.
So when I caught my breath from laughing at Oran, I saw that they brought out Kimbo Slice's fat, out of shape brother. Oh I'm sorry. That was Rick Ross. This is about the time I dropped the kids off at the pool.
I got back just in time to see some block head hit the stage to hype the crowd for "Mr. I'll steal your car at the airport and pretend to be a D.E.A. agent" DMX. The dog lover sounded good but in the back of my mind I was thinking how cool it would be to see him beat the shit out of dog killer Michael Vick. Maybe the block head who was acting as his hype man is actually his probation officer or bail bondsman.
As the show was close to ending, I thought about some really glaring omissions from the performance list. Where was 3rd Bass? Where was Original Concept? Where was Jay Z? Where was LL Cool J? Where was Boss? Hmmmm.
Now it was time for the grand finale'. I had deja vu of my junior year of high school when I saw Kid Rock sporting the LL Cool J Troop jacket. That was dope. Wait, could it be? Yes!!!! EPMD is in the house. And just when it couldn't get any better, it did. Sort of. Out came Foxy Brown with boob's a blazing. Good lord those ting were huge. And I am not complaining about that. But what I am complaining about is seeing Fabolous out there with her. Again, I was asking myself "why?". And can anyone tell me what song that was that Ghostface was doing? Totally not his best track. Then Wale' came back out to do Kanye West's "Touch The Sky". Kanye must have been somewhere else throwing a tantrum and couldn't make the show. Not that anybody missed him anyway.
Then Russell Simmons came out and did his "Goodnight & God bless" line and the show was over. That was very predictable. But okay.
So that was it for this years Hip Hop Honors. Clearly, VH1 was trying to create a sort "Motown 25" type show but it didn't work. This was not as entertaining as past shows. Hopefully they bounce back next year.
And with that, I'm out. Thanks for reading. Feel free to comment. Peace.

So today I was out running errands. While I'm out, a friend of mine sends me a text.
It says "hey if u can, call me real quick. Just wanted to chat real quick".
So, like the great friend I am, I call her back.
She answers the phone, give's me a 45 second update of what she's doing, and then say's she can't really talk at the moment because she's in the middle of a project and that she'd call me back. (I'm paraphrasing some of that just to not breach a confidence).
But anyway, I just don't get why I got a text saying to call to chat if the friend couldn't talk or was busy.
Don't get it twisted, I'm loyal to this friend to my very last breath but sometimes you make me crazy!!!
Oh, and in case you're wondering, she never called me back. LMAO

LOS ANGELES - Hundreds celebrated in the streets outside Staples Center after the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA title
win Sunday night, with some revelers damaging police cruisers, throwing
rocks and bottles at officers and setting bonfires in the street,
authorities said.
About 25 people were arrested,
most part of a rowdy crowd that split off on to surrounding streets
after police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, officer Karen Rayner said.
Several
police cruisers were damaged and reinforcement officers were called in
from throughout the city to help disperse the crowd, Rayner said.
Aerial television footage showed people jumping on a police car,
rocking vehicles attempting to pass through the crowd, setting small
trees on fire and throwing fireworks and flares set up by police. No
injuries were reported.
A gas station was looted and several cars, buses and a news van were vandalized, police said. Chief William Bratton commended officers for showing restraint despite "a lot of provocation from a number of knuckleheads," he told KTTV-TV.
"It's not easy to stand there when cowards in the middle of the crowd are throwing rocks and bottles at them," Bratton said.
Police
department strike teams pushed people from the immediate area around
the Staples Center into surrounding neighborhoods, breaking the crowds
into progressively smaller clusters, police spokeswoman Mary Grady said.
The
department declared a citywide tactical alert, meaning all officers on
duty were to remain on the job until the crowds dispersed, she said.
Rayner said the arrests were for disturbing the peace, arson, outstanding warrants and other crimes.
Across the country in Florida, the Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99-86 in Game 5 of the NBA finals to win their 15th championship.
The
game was not shown at the Staples Center as it had been in previous
years, but revelers from surrounding bars and restaurants and nearby
neighborhoods descended on the area around the Lakers' home for a
post-game celebration.
Ben Weiser, 21, donned a Lakers jersey and came downtown from North Hollywood with two friends to be among other fans. "I watched the last game at home but tonight I wanted to be where the action is," Weiser said.
Television reports also showed small crowds of people parading through the streets of East Los Angeles,
where excitement over the Lakers' Game 4 win Thursday night spilled
into the streets, with rowdy fans swarming vehicles trying to pass
through the area.
Fans there filled the streets
again Sunday night, but large numbers of sheriff's deputies quickly
dispersed the crowd without incident.
Bratton
said that despite the problems the night went "pretty well" compared to
expectations following the more widespread violence and vandalism of
previous championship celebrations.
In 2000, after the Lakers won their first NBA title in 12 years, fans rioted outside Staples Center, burning police cars and leaving more than 70 vehicles damaged, many at nearby auto dealerships. At least a dozen were injured.
Before the game, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said if the Lakers win they should have a victory parade in Los Angeles, despite the city's budget woes.
Villaraigosa said he would work with the private sector to help fund the celebration, which was expected to occur on Wednesday.

I'm a firm believer in "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". And while I detest any kind of violence towards a woman by a man, I can no longer have any compassion for Rihanna. What happened to her was horrible and you'd think that it would be a turning point in her life.
But no.
It's been confirmed that she has shacked back up with the piece of shit Chris Brown. What the fuck is she thinking? I guess Rihanna must mean retard in Barbados. As I said, I've lost all compassion for her situation. If she get's her ass kicked again by him, she has no one to blame but herself.
Let these two shitheads go off and make more shit music. Losers.

You know, I pretty much accept anyone's friend request here on myspace since I figure it's all about building a large network so that when the time comes to get the word out about something, I'll be able to reach a lot of people.
Now with that being said, my policy of accepting everyone also leads to frustration with the way people contact me.
What you are about to read is a prime example of my point that some people are just dumb. This was a comment that was posted for my approval.
"Ah yo wats poppin witcha i aint tawk 2 you in uh min but chayea got new music up doe yadig check it out wenever you get a chance doe tell me wat you think".
That was not edited in any way and was copied verbatim. I'm not going to reveal the identity of the poster but I will say that was quite the dumb post.
Near as I can tell, this guy is asking what's new with me because he hasn't spoke with me in some time. That's funny because I have NEVER talked to this guy. And I guess he has a new song he want me to listen to.
I'd hope that his music is better than his communication ability but I'm 99.9% sure it's not.
C'mon people, if you're gonna post a comment or send me a message, write in English.
The lesson today is that the lazier you write, that doesn't make you cooler. It makes you stupider.

I get bombarded with messages & friend requests everyday. Don't get me wrong, having a network of over 60,000 people is great and definitely needed to promote whatever. But every now and then people show just how stupid they can be. Just got a message from some kid and this is what it said. The subject line read "yow". And the body of the message said "check out the music". Now, unless your name is Larry Blackmon from the group Cameo, you should not be using the non-existent word "yow". And tell me buddy, what music is it that I should be checking out? Your music? Your 3rd cousin's music? Maybe your neighbors sister in law's god son has a demo for me. I know everybody is trying to hustle and get famous but for Christ's sake people, learn how to present yourself Same goes for all you high school drop outs that send me friend requests / messages that start with "it's ya boi".
