It was 20 years ago today that Jaco Pastorius was tragically taken away from us. Even though he only lived 35 years  he still  left us with so many gifts. His music..his playing..they will live on forever. He accomplished the ultimate goal of every musician. He influences, he inspires, and  he has changed peoples lives. For these things he will always be celebrated. But September  21st will always be a sad day for most  people who knew or even  heard of Jaco Pastorius. It is the day we all lost the best bass player that this planet will ever know. More importantly, we lost a son. We lost a brother. We lost a father of four children. We lost a friend....We love you and miss you Jaco!!

JAZZ LEGEND JOE ZAWINUL DIES AT 75

Keyboardist/composer/bandleader Joe Zawinul, who rose to fame as one of the creators of jazz fusion, died on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, of Merkel cell carcinoma. He was 75. Zawinul had been hospitalized since last month.

Zawinul won widespread acclaim for his keyboard work on chart-topping Miles Davis albums such as In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew, and is credited with bringing the electric piano and synthesizer into the jazz mainstream.

In 1970, Zawinul founded the band Weather Report and produced a series of albums including Heavy Weather, Black Market and I Sing the Body Electric. After Weather Report's breakup, he founded the Zawinul Syndicate in 1987. This past spring, he toured Europe to mark the 20th anniversary of the Zawinul Syndicate.

Zawinul's last album, Brown Street, was released by Heads Up International on February 27, 2007. The two-disc set captured Zawinul, a few of his longtime friends and collaborators, and the 15-piece WDR Big Band in an electrifying live performance. Recorded in October 2005 at Zawinul's own Birdland Club in Vienna, Brown Street showcased Zawinul, Syndicate drummer Nathaniel Townsley, Weather Report and Syndicate bassist Victor Bailey and Weather Report drummer/percussionist Alex Acuna in expanded, orchestral renditions of some of the finest Zawinul compositions from the highly influential Weather Report oeuvre.

"Joe Zawinul was a true jazz pioneer," says Dave Love, President of Heads Up. "He was an artist who was always looking forward. He was respected for his innovative style, and the jazz fusion community will be indebted to him forever for his contributions."

Merkel cell carcinoma, also called neuroendocrine cancer of the skin, is a rare disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found on or just beneath the skin and in hair follicles. Merkel cell carcinoma usually appears as firm, painless, shiny lumps of skin. These lumps or tumors can be red, pink, or blue in color and vary in size from less than a quarter of an inch to more than two inches. Merkel cell carcinoma is usually found on the sun-exposed areas of the head, neck, arms, and legs.

Zawinul's wife, Maxine, had died earlier this year. He is survived by his sons Eric, Ivan and Anthony.

JAZZ KEYBOARD LEGEND DIES AT 75

VIENNA (Reuters) - Keyboardist Joe Zawinul, who played with Miles Davis and helped shape jazz fusion with his band Weather Report, died in his native city of Vienna on Tuesday, aged 75.

Zawinul, voted best keyboarder 30 times by music magazine Down Beat's critics' poll, including this year, had sought medical attention last month after a tour. He died of a rare form of skin cancer, local news agency APA reported.

"Joe Zawinul was born on July 7, 1932 in earth time, and on September 11, 2007 in eternal time. He lives on," APA quoted his son Erich as saying.

Growing up in Vienna's poor Erdberg district during Nazi rule, Zawinul first showed his talent by playing the accordion with his family. He later won a free place in the Vienna Conservatory. As a young man his friends were the late former Austrian President Thomas Klestil and pianist Friedrich Gulda.

In 1959, Zawinul won a piano scholarship at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where many careers in contemporary music began, before joining the bands of U.S. jazz stars Dinah Washington and later Cannonball Adderly.

Miles Davis first approached the budding pianist in New York's Birdland jazz club, wanting to hire him, Zawinul once told an interviewer. Zawinul turned him down but said that when the time was right, they would make history together.

And when the time was right, they did. Ten years later, Zawinul wrote "In a Silent Way," the title cut for Davis' 1969 album regarded as one of the trumpeter's first forays into jazz fusion, a genre drawing on rock, R&B and other styles.

He played on and composed for Davis' "Bitches Brew" album in 1970, a chart-topping record considered revolutionary for the day and marking his crossover to a rock and pop audience.

Zawinul started Weather Report in 1970 with saxophonist Wayne Shorter. The band did much to bring electric piano, synthesizers, and African and Middle Eastern rhythms to mainstream audiences in a jazz setting.

Before its breakup in 1985, Weather Report released 17 albums. Its most famous song, "Birdland," published on the "Heavy Weather" album in 1977, won separate Grammy awards in three decades -- for the original version as well as for covers by Quincy Jones and Manhattan Transfer.

Following the break-up of Weather Report, Zawinul had fronted the Zawinul Syndicate for the past 20 years. After the group's tour this summer, he sought medical attention and was admitted to the Wilhelmina Clinic in his native city last month.

In 1963, Zawinul married Maxine, the first African-American Playboy bunny, whom he met in the Birdland club too. They mainly lived in Malibu, California. The couple had three children.

He also spent a lot of time in Vienna and started his own club there, also called Birdland. He had planned to give a concert in Vienna's concert hall on September 29.

Vienna Mayor Michael Haeupl said the musician would be buried in a grave of honor in Vienna.

From the Official Site

We are proud to announce that Sony's Legacy label has released the official career-spanning anthology of our father's music titled "The Essential Jaco Pastorius." This 2-CD, 27 track, set spans the entire spectrum of his professional recording career and will be the definitive one-stop compilation of his life's work. Included are the classic recordings from Jaco's solo debut album on Epic, as well as his essential work and collaborations with Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Michel Colombier and classics from his "Word Of Mouth" album on Warner Bros. The Essential Jaco Pastorius also brings a 16-page booklet with extensive liner notes and CD overview including several rare photos. The booklet also features a heartfelt forward written by Carlos Santana, with Sting and Flea making meaningful contributions as well. This NEW "Essential" release by Legacy provides the ideal opportunity for new generations to be able to experience the wide variety of styles and depth of emotion that define Jaco's genius both as a musician and a composer.

"TRIO OF DOOM" / Legacy Records

June 26th was also the release date of "Trio Of Doom," on Legacy records.
These live and studio recordings feature Jaco with John McLaughlin and Tony Williams performing their "Havana Jam" repertoire. Widely perceived as being a debacle, the true nature of this legendary controversial performance in Havana Cuba in 1979 has remained somewhat of a mystery for some 28 years. That is until now!

The complete "Trio Of Doom" recordings are currently available for everybody to finally hear exactly what went down.

JACOPHILES-

I think all of us have asked the question: How did John Francis III become Jaco??? Did he just spring forth fully formed from the head of Zeus, or was there a process? What was going on BEFORE the release of his startling debut solo album, JACO PASTORIUS, aka the shot heard 'round the world for all bassists for forever and all eternity.

Friends- the master's path is now revealed in a just released MUST HAVE cd entitled, Jaco Pastorius: The Early Years Recordings. His first bands, recordings, compositions- including one newly discovered and NEVER BEFORE HEARD entitled "Ballye de Nina"! From the press release:

"This exclusive early years collection represents a work of historical significance that provides a seamless account of Jaco's development from his very beginnings as a musician all the way up to the release of his revolutionary solo debut album. Bobbing explains, "These were Jaco's "Garden of Eden" years in Florida when he was healthy, happy, making music and enjoying life, and you can hear that positive attitude throughout these recordings."

This rare collection takes you all the way back to the beginning when Jaco was developing his sound, his chops, his style, and his writing skills... back to when he was brazenly ignoring all the rules and well on his way to re-defining the role of the electric bass.

This historical release contains Jaco Pastorius' essential early years recordings. Hear his signature style develop in a succession of R&B bands, jazz groups and recording sessions. This exclusive collection of music is the prequel to Jaco's solo debut."

You dig?!

OK- There is obviously a lot of dissension among Jaco fans on this "controversial" topic. On the "pro" side the argument is that it will gain more exposure for our boy. On the "con" side, the anti-Ching are saying (among other things) that no one's gonna find out about Jaco through this song because Chingy fans could care less about where the song originally came from anyway.

Well, whether you are for or against, the fact of the matter is that "Pullin' Me Back" is now officially a TOP 40 song (we're talking Kasey Kasem dudes), so if we want ensure that the ignorant are enlighted as to where the "meat and potatoes" of this song, AND the SWV song, REALLY originated, I think it's gonna have to be up to us to get the word out.

Jaco fans- let us unite into a mighty army and turn this into a golden opportunity. Let the masses know that the reason they are loving the song is because IT IS THE MELODY TO PORTRAIT OF TRACY!!! Let's lead them to the original and it's originator- the "real deal".

Here are some ideas...

Leave messages on Chingy's various website boards and blogs:

Chingy on Myspace
Chingy.com

Vote for "Pullin' Me Back" on TRL and post on MTV's messageboards:

These are just some "mainstream" ideas off the top of my head, but of course there are many more things we could do, and let's not forget the local or grassroots level- tell a friend! I humbly invite any and all ideas.

And so I leave you with the immortal words of Rodney King- "Can't we all just get along???".

=============================

UPDATE:

Just went looking for some "official" info in regards to the song on JacoPastorius.com. Here is what I found posted by Mary Pastorius:

"Been receiving LOTS of concerned inquiries about this, so to answer your questions/allay your fears: No, you are NOT hallucinating. Chingy IS rapping over "Portrait of Tracy". Yes, we are aware of it. Yes, he went through the proper channels for permission to use the song. Haven't heard it yet? Check it: http://myspace.com/chingy "

------------------------------------------

So, clearly, Chingy has NOT ripped Jaco off. As I said, that's not the issue. The point is that it would be nice if the listening public were made aware of where the original composition came from. Let's not make the fans of the song our enemies because they are most likely unaware that they are actually fortunate to be listening to a melody written by the late great Jaco Pastorius. We don't want to create a backlash. If what we are trying to do is spread the word, remember, you catch more bees with honey.

UPDATE- 23 August 2006

This is a review posted on contactmusic.com. Tell me if you notice anything missing from this story:

Chingy - Pullin' Me Back featuring Tyrese - Single Review

Chingy returns with a killer, smoothed out, radio friendly rap track called "Pullin' Me Back". Produced by Jermaine Dupri and sampling "Rain" this track should set radio alight in America thus turning it into a world-wide monster from the man that brought us "Right Thurr".

With the accessibilty of this, of this smoothed out potentiential monster, this track could easily do the kind of damage for Chingy that "I Need Love" did for LL Cool J. It is smooth, smouldering and sexy. The track is helped by a solid vocal guest performance from Tyrese. If this isn't hammered on American radio and does not become a monster worldwide hit there really is no justice, because Chingy has delivered the perfect hit record.

Have you heard this yet? In his new single "Pullin Me Back" Chingy is rapping over the lead melody line of "Portrait of Tracy"!

Check it out-

CHINGY - "Pullin Me Back"

----------------------------------------------------------

Portrait of Tracy on Wikipedia

"Portrait of Tracy" is a composition by legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius. It appears on his landmark self-titled debut album, and it widely recorded as a tribute by bassists such as Joe Ferry, Marcus Miller, Brian Bromberg, and others. It is considered a bass guitar standard, and is often used as a benchmark for a bassist's abilities.

The song is played with almost exclusively with natural harmonics, giving it a dreamy, unfamiliar tone for the bass.

The song has been sampled on a few songs, most notably, SWV's Rain, and Chingy and Tyrese's Pulling Me Back.

Jaco's longtime percussionist and friend, Don Alias died Mar 28th 2006. Needless to say the music world has suffered yet another great blow. Here is part of what Jaco's daughter Mary had to say about Don's passing on the jacopastorius.com messageboard :

"i think it goes without saying the deep level of respect and admiration my father had for don considering he was featured on all of his solo recordings - sh*t, don's conga is the FIRST thing you hear on JACO PASTORIUS... what does that tell you!

i am deeply saddened by this news... this really sucks. "

Well now Jaco and Don can jam out on Donna Lee for all eternity... GOD BLESS AND RIP!
