Bicycle Records Releases

BR 002 June Madrona, The Bitter Waves CDR $6
Originally a Ross Cowman solo album. This is a cleaned-up reissue of that album with some fresh recordings of the old songs. Joe Cappocia and Kendl Winter of The Blackberry Bushes sing on one track Margaret Butler sings and plays cello, Jamie Stillman plays vibraphone.

BR 003 Eli Moore, Consuming Fire EP CDR $6
Eli Moore..s solo release, ..Consuming Fire.., weaves folk and pop traditions into spacious compositions featuring layers of guitar, piano, and Eli..s soft voice. A soundtrack for the unspoken desires of everyday life.

BR 004 June Madrona, A Long and Ugly Road CDR $6
This is the first official June Madrona album. Back then June Madrona was me (Ross) and Sarah. We recorded it in two sessions in my Yurt next to chickens and a fountain. You can also hear a train and a stellar jay if you listen closely.

BR 005 Yes Please, Oo La La EP CDR $6
Lily recorded this on a borrowed 8-track in her basement bedroom. She pretty much blew us all away.

BR 006 The Winning Lasses, S/T EP $6
Winning Lasses shows are characterized by rooms full of attentive people. So silent you can hear the breathing. The Winning Lasses.. first album, a five song EP exhibits the quiet and simple songwriting that marks most all of their work.

BR 007 Robin Cutler, No More Danger CD $10
Beautiful folk ballads steeped in all the heartache and yearning of the Northwest winters. Whether in collaboration with fellow Olympia musicians Eli Moore, Adam Olsner and Dan Swier, or all by herself, ..No More Danger.. showcases an artist clearly in command of her craft as a songwriter and a guitarist.

BR 008 June Madrona, The Winged Life CD $10
..On my favorite June Madrona song, they sing, ..Last night I dreamt that Portland filled up with gardens/and people on bicycles passing me by/and streets lined with fruit trees... June Madrona is Olympia..s Ross Cowman, Onyx Dixon, and Christopher Schile turning guitar, voice, harp, and cello into careful, stately folk. It..s nice. Like summer in Portland... -Portland Mercury
This album comes in a silk screened cover with a 16-page booklet of lyrics, drawings, and photos.

BR 009 The Wax Fire, Blueprints CDR $15
..Fronted by a singing girl with a cello, they built a lush and beautiful wall of melancholy sound, much like, oh I don..t know, Godspeed You Black Emperor, if fronted by Milla Jovovich.. ..Kai Smart
This album comes packaged in a hand-sewn cloth case and bag.

Spring 2007

BR 010 The Wax Fire, The New Courier CD $10
(scheduled for release may ..06)
I used to heckle the wax fire whenever they played. They were just too good, and their singer, Jen Grady, always seemed so poised and in control. Finally, after 4 years I heard Jen let loose on the climax of ..Annebeleigh.. It blew my mind. Michael who hosts ..Cool as Folk.. at the college radio station in Davis put it best, ..I figured out the wax fire..s secret. They..re really a metal band...

BR 011 June Madrona, Dreams of a Failing Machine CD $10
(scheduled for release june ..06)
Songs about dreams and the relationships between animals and machines.

Bicycle Distribution

Antsy Pants CD $6
Kimya Dawson and a bunch of young French kids singing songs about vampires and daring big-wheel stunts.

Captain Chaos, The Scientist and the Duke CD $6
Chris Clavin runs plan-it-x records out of a bus parked by Ross' house in Olympia. His songs are just as much stories as they are songs, and he sings them with passion and honesty.

Captain Chaos, This is a Cake CD $6
The second of 4 planned CC releases. For this second act, our heart-broken troubadour locks himself in his room for a weekend of recording and writing non-stop. Most of these songs were written and recorded in 1 or 2 takes without editing. The result is a raw and confessional collection of songs.

Craig Salt Peters, Whooping Crane Dance CD $10
Craig Peters of Arcata writes poppy sing-alongs full of optimism and romance.

Crazy For Jane, Desperate Serenade CD $10
Crazy for Jane is a brother and sister duo. They sing about geographic dilemmas, some drama, shipwreck, rescue missions, and Jane. Their music is "a desperate serenade underneath your window".

Erin Toby, Self Titled CD $6
You might know her from Mt. Gigantic or Abe Froman but her solo stuff is really different. In her own words, "You grow up listening to noisy bands and playing in noisy bands, and eventually you realize that there are some things you want to say that people need to understand right away without much strain. What do you do? You play guitar quieter and by yourself. Sing clearly. Show a slideshow. Put it all out there, man. Don't mess around."

The Finches, 6 Songs EP CD $10
The Finches are Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs and Aaron Morgan from San Francisco. I fell in love with these songs instantly. In "The House with Two Front Doors" Carolyn reveals the synchronistic life she shares with the stranger who shares her building. In "Daniel's Song" she tries to convince her brother to let her give him a ride. These simple stories are telling observations of human nature.

Joe Cappocia, Wake Up Rainy Morning and Other Songs EP CDR $6
Joe of The Pasties shows off his "more folk, less punk" side in this collection of 5 songs.

Kickball, S/T CDR $6
Kickball's first album is packed with all of the hits they never play anymore. Well, almost. "Goodbye First Girlfriend" isn't on this album. But "Cheetah" and "City of Love" should be enough to bring you back to the living room sing-along days of early Kickball.

Kickball, Huckleberry Eater CD $10
In their second album, Kickball starts to let loose a bit. While still a showcase of Jacob's songwriting, you can hear the moments when the band starts to break out and explore.

Kickball, ABCDEFGHIJKickball CD $10
Apparently "Little Things" is a dance hit in Barcelona. I believe it. Recorded at Bicycle Studios, Kickball's 3rd release is full of rip, energy, and tight arrangements of bass guitar, guitar, drums, and Jacob's voice.

LAKE, S/T CDR $10
Karl Blau and Lake spent a week recording in Anacortes just as this dynamic project was getting off the ground. LAKE takes a large ensemble of multi-instrumental songwriters and makes it all work somehow. If I gave this band a label it would be post-classic rock.

LAKE, Tape EP CA $6 (cassette tape)
Choral vocal harmonies, layered percussion and ambient electronic loops expand the aural palette of LAKE in their second release. This cassette release was recorded on a 8 track at Chez Puget in Olympia and represents a giant step forward for Lake both in songwriting and in arranging.

Madeline, Kissing and Dancing CD $6
Madeline's first album, recorded when she was like 17 or 18. The singing Chris from plan-it-x records had this to say: "This is a re-press of "Kissing and Dancing", but it's a lot more than just a re-press. This CD has all new full color art designed by Nate Powell of Walkie Talkie and Soophie Nun Squad. Besides really cool new art it also has 2 new songs on it that we recorded in my house... Madeline is awesome, that's all I can say. A voice to rival any country songwriter goddess, and great songs too."

Onyx of Olympia, Homespun Astrology EP CDR $6
Onyx also plays in June Madrona, and if you've seen them play live then you've probably already heard Onyx's solo material. This music is carried by her voice, sometimes all on its own, and her songs are full of wisdom and fairy magic.

Palisades, S/T EP CDR $6
Eli Moore of LAKE, and Josh Wood form the songwriting core of Palisades. Here is a review: "The production on the record lends itself to Palisades.. musical style perfectly- making the songs sound thick and soft as a bed pillow without losing definition to any of the parts. All in all the lyrics are like something taken from torn out pages of a diary, and when combined with neatly orchestrated surreal pop the result is one dreamy record. Put this one under your pillow." -Whats Up!

Palisades, Underground Houses CDR $6
Palisades' second release, with Bicycle's own Bob Schwenkler taking up the bass duties. Owl Baby has to be one of my all time favorite Eli Moore songs. Every inch of these recordings has been layered and scrutinized. The result? Pop heaven.

Ruth Allison, Whats Left CDR $10
Ruth just moved to Olympia from Anacortes, WA. Her songs make me think of those messages from the dream-world you can almost remember when you get up in the morning. This album is full of breath and atmosphere which we at Bicycle like very much.

Son, Cassette CD $6
Chris Schiel of June Madrona recorded this in his bathroom with a hand-held cassette recorder. Amazing. I really hope Chris doesn't have to pay the repair bill for that cello.

Your Heart Breaks CD $6
The latest full-length from Your Heart Breaks. Produced by the best producer in the world, Karl Blau. Recorded at Dub Narcotic Studios in January, 2006. There are more than 30 awesome musicians on this thing. It kicks ass. It's 5 bucks. You will love it.

Bike records has decided to start a distro in addition to the record label. This means we get to ask all the rad musicians we met on the road to let us sell their albums for them through our website and mailorder catalogue. It also means that soon you will be able to browse through an amazing selection of music you might never hear otherwise.
