Today there are more ways than ever to get involved in Fair Trade advocacy in your community.  The Fair Trade Towns campaign encourages committed community members to increase the awareness and availability of Fair Trade products where they live.  Student groups have been successfully lobbying for years to make their school cafes and cafeterias go Fair Trade Certified™.  Faith-based groups have been organizing around interfaith councils, coffee-buying programs, and faith-based humanitarian agencies to support and promote the Fair Trade movement.  Don't know how to get started?  Order our event kit and invite some friends over to learn more about Fair Trade and talk about how you can impact your block, your town, your country and the world!

Mother's Day and flowers go hand in hand.  But when you send your mother this symbol of your love, what message are you sending to mothers in poor, flower-growing countries around the world?

In many flower farms in countries like Ecuador, pregnant women work long hours and are often exposed to harsh, dangerous chemicals. Many are afraid to let their company know they are pregnant for fear they will lose their job.  And when they have the baby, they have little to no assurance that a job will be waiting for them when they come back.

That's at many farms.  But not all of them.

A better world is blooming.  Fair Trade Certified flowers ensure that women/mothers are treated with the respect they deserve.  They are required to have breaks so they can rest.  They are forbidden from working with chemicals.  And when they have their baby, they not only get a maternity leave, but they also get their job back - with reduced hours so they can spend time with their newborn.

The rest of the flower farms in the world need to come in to line.  But it will only happen if consumers here in the United States do something about it.

This Mother's Day, make your flowers Fair Trade Certified.   Help us
spread the word by passing this video on to others who might be purchasing flowers for their mother or spouse this year.

The second Saturday of May is known around the globe as World Fair Trade Day, when dozens of countries celebrate the power of Fair Trade to help consumers and producers live in right relationships. This year, communities across North America will join together to enjoy a Fair Trade Coffee Break on Saturday, May 10 at 3:00 p.m, Eastern Standard Time. The Guinness Book of World Records reports that the current record for the World's Largest Coffee Break consisted of 3,000 people enjoying the same break. Fair Traders intend to break this record with Fair Trade flair!

World Fair Trade Day's main message is one of solidarity through Fair Trade. By joining together across distances and time zones to enjoy a cup of hot or iced Fair Trade coffee, we can live this message together.

To find more ideas or to plan your participation in the May 10 coffee break, visit the Fair Trade Resource Network, which is coordinating events in partnership with the Fair Trade Towns Initiative.

So you buy Fair Trade products, but you want to do more to educate members of your community about Fair Trade?  The Fair Trade Resource Network is planning their World Fair Trade Day coming up on May 10th, the day before Mother's Day!  Get in touch with us today and we'll help you get active in your community as a part of nationwide Fair Trade campaigns this Spring.  Read more about the actions that you can become involved in below!

Of course, more info about these exciting events to come in the next couple months!

Bring Fair Trade Flowers to Your Local Café, Grocery Coop or Fair Trade Retailer!

Thanks to FTD, Fair Trade Flowers aren't just for florists anymore.  Do you have a fair trade coffee house, grocery coop or other retail ally that would like to stock fair trade flowers but can't commit to a large order?  TransFair USA and FTD are partnering on an exciting promotion that could be the answer for all our allies in this position.

Can your local retailer commit to a weekly order of 27 bouquets?  If so, TransFair USA and FTD will supply a beautiful Fair Trade flowers display rack and all of the educational materials you can handle, free of charge.  We are currently piloting this program in the hopes of expanding it nationwide very soon.  With your help, we can make this option a reality for small businesses across the country.

We will need to identify at least a dozen local partners no later than March 22nd to make this program a success.  FTD representatives will even fly out to train you and your shops staff!  To learn more contact Jamie Guzzi, 510-663-5260 x.309  or email jguzzi@transfairusa.org.

Bring Fair Trade Flowers to Your Congregation!

Communities of faith and their members are some of the most dedicated buyers of flowers around.  They also happen to be some of our stalwart allies.  Has your congregation been working to promote fair trade among its members for years?  Have you already hosted your one millionth coffee hour and looking for a new campaign to take your groups commitment to the next level?

We need your support!  We are just beginning to look into the possibility of bringing fair trade flowers to all of our allied faith groups.  Let us know where your group gets its flowers, what kind they use and how often.  We can help you reach out to that florist and get them to help you all make the switch!

Interested in hosting a Fair Trade flowers and faith event?  We are offering small grants for World Fair Trade Day and Mother's Day with a special emphasis on those of you working to reach out to communities of faith.  Want to get a bulk order of Fair Trade Flowers at a discount rate?  Need Materials?  We can help!

For more information on our World Fair Trade Day grants program contact Jamie Guzzi, Consumer Outreach Coordinator, 510-844-1640 or email jguzzi@transfairusa.org.  To order our sweet Mother's Day themed materials, along with all our other resources you've come to know and love, please visit:

We at TransFair USA had the honor today of being visited by His Excellency the Vice President of Uganda Dr. Gilbert Bukenya.  Dr. Bukenya talked a bit about the challenges and opportunities present in the Ugandan economy, and finished his presentation by saying "Fair Trade is the solution to the poverty of Sub-Saharan Africa."  It was truly a moving and motivating conclusion.  When someone like Dr. Bukenya says that we need Fair Trade, we should listen!

We presented him with a pound of Mirembe Kawomera (Delicious Peace) coffee as a token of the connection between the Fair Trade movement in the US and the people of Uganda.  Of course, the irony of coming to America to be given Ugandan coffee wasn't lost on him, but Dr. Bukenya said that he would bring the coffee with him on the rest of his tour of the US to show that, in Uganda, there is some good coffee!
