HAVEN - Stomp & Swirl; December 1

Haven was a fun time this week, despite being a somewhat slow night (of course, a "slow night" for Haven is still one that would fill some other club-nights.) The Stomp & Swirl theme set the tone for my sets. For my first set I stayed "swirl-ish" and then got stompy for most of my second set... but never went above 122 BPM. I improved my technique some from a couple weeks ago and my song selection seemed to be appreciated. Near the end of my first set I found myself really struggling to pick my next song and picked a couple of tracks last second that I would've rather chosen differently. But they worked out well enough, I suppose. Still much to work on but I'm pretty happy with where I'm heading.

I'll be back to Haven for Noel Noir AND for the Tuesday after. I've updated my schedule posted here.

Here are my sets from Haven - Stomp & Swirl:

HELL; November 4

I'm always thrilled to hear feedback from Club Hell's Fetish Night crowd. They really enjoy the mix and the differing style of music between DJ Dank Coma and myself. It's a lot of fun! It's also funny because no one I know seems to know I'm even spinning there until I'm done. Once they find out they are always complimentary so I don't mind being somewhat anonymous knowing that they really are enjoying it.
We were working on two different cd players (a Pioneer vs. a Numark) and I'm finally getting a real sense of the difference of utility between the two brands. My own decks are Numark so I have enough familiarity with the brand to function with them adequately, but I'm finding Pioneer to be superior in a lot of ways. Though I could see how some of Pioneer's intuitive utility could make me a lazier DJ. Maybe it's me, but I like to feel like I'm working when I spin. It just feels more rewarding when you do something well and you were working for it. Makes it more fun for me anyway.

I'm told I'll be back at Club Hell's Fetish Night in December, but I don't have a date yet. I'll post when I do.

Here is my set from Fetish Night at Club Hell:

9-11 set

HAVEN - Exotic Erotic Ball; November 17

I had a lot of fun at Haven's Exotic Erotic Ball and Bella Vendetta liked my pants! (non sequitur much?) It was the first time in a while I've worn vinyl, mostly because I avoid it during warmer seasons.

This was another of those nights where I had great song selection but had varying degrees of successful execution. It may be that few, if any, noticed. I noticed though and have to improve, even if the best of us have bad transitions now and again. There are elements I need to be better aware of for better blends and mixes; stuff like if a song ends cold or fades, etc... part of the problem is I don't "know by heart" every song I have in my library that I might pick to play, so sometimes that lack of familiarity can hinder my performance. Although sometimes that unfamiliarity can also end up conjuring something inspired.
Eh, DJing is so much less a "science" than, say "science" is, so it's not like there is a foolproof equation to get it right.
Overall I did well... I ran a few songs long on my second set so Damian Plague could host the contest and I managed to keep things up and moving despite my personal critiques.
Mothra loaned me a track I wanted to play but was missing from my library for some reason that night (thank you sir!)
We all managed to play Nine Inch Nails at least once per hour (which I found kind of amusing since 3 tracks played came from Pretty Hate Machine.)
I managed to dance a little bit here and there too. Physically I'm doing ok, but still feeling sensitive about my knee, so it may be a while after the next surgery before I can throw myself into a night-long dance experience again. I look forward to that day.

I return to HAVEN on December 1 for STOMP & SWIRL. DJs Azrael, Znuh, and myself will be dropping slow and body-moving beats!

I should be able to post a full run-down of my December DJ dates on December 1; just waiting on a few details myself. :)

[31 Oct 2009 | Saturday]
Halloweek was a lot of fun and super busy!
I had 3 bookings and contained my annual festivities to those nights because I didn't want to stress about having more than one costume.
For costuming GZ & I were the Wonder Twins, Zan & Jayna. I took much perverse pleasure in telling people that my girlfriend was my sister! Oh the fun reactions! And we got attacked by a couple of Black Lanterns at Haven (I'm still looking for a picture of that!)
We would have also done The Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend... but we were running too far behind to finish those costumes in time and as it turned out we ran into a Dr. Mrs. The Monarch and a henchman @ Haven & The Monarch in prison-wear at the private party I spun; so maybe we'll get those costumes finished in time for next year.

My sets went well and I got to play some fun stuff and work with great people. My personal highlight included getting to spin with Purple again for both a public (D.I.) and a private (no playlist) party! She is super-swell and we work pretty well together!

I have a few pictures of our costuming here.

Had some trouble with the equipment and I couldn't bring my rig because I couldn't guarantee I'd be there early enough due to a private party I was committed to spin. So it was a night to focus on song selection more than technique.

[20 Oct 2009 | Tuesday]
I had the initial surgery on my knee last Wednesday. The timing was excellent in terms of my schedule for any events I spin and I'm certain I'll be 95-99% by Halloweek.

The recovery time was supposed to be only a few days and has been moving along as expected. I can walk again without crutches or cane but still need support with stairs and can do about 75-80% of any of the work-outs I do with GZ at home or at the gym. I haven't actually tried to do any of our gym work-outs yet. I wanted to wait until I'd gone to physical therapy at least once to get an evaluation on where I stand.

The remarkable thing is that I've had no pain and the Vicodin they prescribed won't be necessary. I'll keep it in case I encounter something unusual later, but I prefer not to use pain medications if I don't have to.

The surgery confirmed that I have portions of my cartilage that are worn all the way to the bone. This indicates that I am a candidate for the ACI procedure which can replace what I've lost with new cartilage. The doctor cleaned the area up and has taken some of the tissue to begin harvesting new cells. They grow the cells for about two weeks and then freeze them while he does the insurance dance that will ensure we get this covered. Once coverage is confirmed (and I'm optimistic about this because the doctor seems to speak of it in a way that makes it evident he knows the hoops through which he'll have to jump for the insurance company) they will thaw the cells out to grow more for another month before implantation.
I'm really hoping we can accomplish this before the end of the year but until the insurance dance is done we can't really schedule it.

I could not really go through this without the support and care of my Lady GZ and am grateful every day for her! I know what's coming will make me less able to contribute to our house duties for a while, especially during the winter when I would be the one to shovel snow, but she offers me nothing but support, encouragement, and love. I still have no idea how I got this lucky.

So in the meantime we've got costumes to complete for next week and we're running out of time. Some of the material we've had to order for our Venture Brothers characters have not come in still and we're uncertain if any of it is even coming. :(
Our Super Friends character costumes are pretty close to complete though, so we'll at least have that.
Of course, we've gone with a modernization of those characters, but they should be easy to recognize for any 70's era Super Friends fans. hee hee

p.s. Tomorrow I'll post my play lists from Plague and Jaded earlier this month.

[02 Oct 2009 | Friday]
So here's what I'm up to this month; if you'd care to join me at any of these events, please do.
:)
I return to spin at Plague and Jaded during the first half of the month.
Then, during what I've come to refer to as my "Halloweek," I'll celebrate Halloween parties spinning at Haven and Dark Intentions (at a new location for this event.)
Plus I'll be spinning for two private parties: one on the same night as Jaded, the other on Halloween out in Pioneer Valley.
Since they're "private" they won't be listed below; I'm just excited to have so much to do, I wanted to share!

(Personal note: Part One of my knee surgeries will happen mid-month but should not affect my schedule because it is supposed to be just a three day recovery; fingers crossed!)

[30 Sep 2009 | Wednesday]
I'm place-marking this journal entry of my playlist at Haven for the actual date it occurred because of the back to back posting I have to do over the next couple days and because I prefer the separation of one entry per date.

Haven's Time Machine, Flashback to Classic Dark Alt. & 80's was a good time, if a bit underpopulated from its norm.
Since the focus was '80's, I really tried to keep everything I played as familiar as possible after the first 20 minutes because, as my lady GZ points out, the 18-25 demo wasn't really around or over-exposed to the goth music of that time. Crossover hits and recurrents that scene DJs mix into everything we already spin, sure. And what else are 80's radio stations good for? I also avoided anything I played at Goth 101, since my larger set then focused on the 80's as well.

I discovered a few gaps I need to fill in my library. I did a couple of technical things I was proud of. And I only went out of format for one song that was a request, but still has a bit of that dark 80's feel about it so don't expect an apology. 8P

I'm about to post my full schedule at the top of the month, but I will be back to Haven on October 27. Full details in said post. :)

Here are my sets from Haven's Time Machine:

9:00-10:00p set:

JADED; September 12, 2009

JADED in Lowell rocked! The dance floor (such that it is for its size) was full 99% of the time, Dirge kept me dancing through most of his first set (which is the most I've danced anywhere in a while,) and all the models and go-go dancers were super swwwwelegant! I finally met Miss Debauchery & I found out that one of the designers, Ben Gould, can help me with an improvement I've been wanting to make to my Nightcrawler costume (specifically the tail!)
Dirge & I wrapped up the night with a short tag set, though it's too bad we didn't have more time for that because we were meshing really well!

Sarula has really put together an outstanding event and I'm ever so thankful she included me in its inception!

She's having me back out to spin Jaded with LasciViouS next month on Saturday, October 10!
(If I've already given you a discount card for it and you didn't go this time, it's still good any time I spin, despite the date I may have written in. I have more for anyone who wants one, just let me know. 8D )

HAVEN; September 15, 2009

It was HAVEN's Back To School party last night so as we taught our course in "GOTH 101" I got a chance to start at 9:45p since Azrael wanted to be able to go deep historical goth in the first hour. The idea behind Goth 101 is that as DJs/Teachers for the night, Znuh, Azrael, & I are supposed to take everyone on a journey from the roots to the present state of what we commonly accept as music for the goth/industrial scene. So my follow-up set to Azrael locked into mostly post-punk and 80's era, and I ended up playing at least 4 commonly known tracks that I've never had the occasion or opportunity to use previously in a club. Those went over so well!

My later set after the costume contest got cut shorter than usual due to some confusion in scheduling but I stuck to some "recurrents" (as one might refer to them in radio terms) and feel really glad about the response. As usual, I totally over-prepared, but that's better(Shock to suddenly realize we did Goth 101 without playing any Depeche Mode or New Order! There is just too much music, hahaha)

I was already feeling very in tune and energized before a lot of highly emotional energy drove my focus even tighter. The downside of that is I'm utterly exhausted and managed to pick up a light cold. The up-side is that I was able to direct that energy into something productive throughout the experience! It's good to be able to use high emotions to charge a set... but all said and done, I'd rather do the same relaxed.
Obviously, I'm not going into any detail about the specifics, but I will say it was a learning experience that afterward I fell better about going through and coming out the otherside with better understanding and some personal growth.

I have a rather unique situation going for me at Haven and being a part of what happens there for the past year+ has been a truly rewarding experience that I'm ever so grateful to those who have made it possible.

I return to Haven on Tuesday, September 29 for "TIME MACHINE: Flashback to to Classic Dark Alt. & 80's!"
I'll be spinning with DJs Azrael & Damian Plague!

Here are my sets from Haven's Goth 101 party:

Lots to do, I'll be brief.

This month, Dirge and I return to the decks at Jaded for the first time since we did when the event debuted. It's bound to be a great time (I'm looking forward to it at least!) If you are coming, get hold of he or I for coupons off admission! (I'm going to be at Haven tonight so for any of that crowd who might want some, just ask.)
:)
I'll also spin at Haven twice this month. There will be a particular focus on old-school goth/industrial for both my visits. First as a tour through the entire time-line of goth/industrial for those returning to school, and then as flashback to the eighties!
